Critics were beginning to sour. ''Magazine/RollingStone'' only gave ''…But Seriously'' 2 out of 5 stars. In particular, some people felt "Another Day in Paradise" was tone-deaf by default coming from someone they regarded as privileged; some went so far as to claim Phil was profiteering off the issue of homelessness. To this day, he still gets heat for the song in some circles.

But that song, and the album as a whole, won the hearts of fans and his peers. At least in the short term.

Phil was nominated for the Grammy Awards Triple Crown in 1991, winning Record of the Year for "Another Day in Paradise", and being nominated for Song of the Year, while the album was nominated for Album of the Year. The album also won two American Music Awards.

For that film, he recorded two songs: "Two Hearts", and "A Groovy Kind of Love".

Both were #1 in the United States. The latter also hit #1 in the United Kingdom.

His less political songs from this album would dabble in soul and gospel influence.
