* RapMetal: They are often called this, just because of who the lead singer is, but they really aren't. Some of their songs ("Invincible Gangsta", "Talk Shit, Get Shot", and "My Way" for example) do feature rapping, but most of them don't. Ice opts more for thrash-style chanting most of the time.

Their lyrics and image are pure hip-hop in style, though.

Unique for a band fronted by a rapper, the vast majority of Body Count's songs don't actually feature Ice-T rapping. He raps in a few songs, but usually is heard using vocal styles he never uses otherwise, mainly shouted vocals typical of hardcore, chanting commonly used in thrash, and even occasional clean singing. In other words, he has proven among many metal fans to be a pretty competent vocalist in the genre.

The song "Cop Killer" was the subject of much controversy. Although Sire Records' parent company, WarnerBros. Records, defended the single, Ice-T chose to remove the track from the album because he felt that the controversy had eclipsed the music itself. The group left Sire the following year.
