* WhoWearsShortShorts: Takeo does at his part time job at the Machos cafe, where all the men are big, muscular and wear tank tops with short pants.

** ironically it then cuts to the girls buying swimsuits with Rinko specifically aiming to wear one that'll arouse Takeo.

* BlamingTheVictim: kicking off the entire series, a man who was caught groping Rinko on the train tries to defend himself by saying she was "asking for it". [[{{Understatement}} Takeo disagrees.]] [[MegatonPunch Strongly.]]

* ChristmasEpisode: Episode 17 has Takeo and Rinko, along with Suna, spend Christmas Eve together with their classmates at a karaoke bar.

** Rinko suffers a brief one in episode 17 when Nanako says she's already had her FirstKiss with Kurihara, despite dating him for only a short while. Meanwhile she has yet to kiss Takeo.

* DramaPanes: In episode 4 Suna and Rinko are staring up at the third floor window of a restaurant they'd been at, which had caught fire. Takeo is still in the restaurant, and the flames are getting worse. Cue a SuperWindowJump from Takeo, who lands safely, and embraces Rinko, even though he's literally on fire. Thankfully, Takeo is MadeOfIron, so he's unharmed.

** In episode 18, Rinko works up her courage to give Takeo their FirstKiss. Unfortunately, he was so lost in thought at the moment thinking back to how he would never forget this birthday, that he didn't even notice she kissed him. Takeo only realizes it after describing to Makoto that a "small, soft bug" landed on his lips while he was making a wish. Even then, Makoto still has to point it out to him that it was a kiss. [[spoiler:Fortunately they re-do it properly shortly afterwards when he runs to her house.]]

** Rinko goes through one at the end of episode 17 after finding out Nanako already had her FirstKiss with Kurihara, despite having only dated for a short time. Meanwhile, she has yet to do the deed with Takeo.

** Kurihara has one near the end of episode 17 after he blows repeated opportunities to ask out Nanako. He then decides to go for the star on top of the giant Christmas tree which urban legend says will make whoever they ask out say yes. Though Rinko manages to call Nanako back, Kurihara's own words at why he likes her helps her to see that he's not such a bad guy after all.

* IndirectKiss: Done in episode 17, after Rinko is unable to eat a piece of food that was too spicy for her. Takeo then eats it without a second thought so as not to waste it. He then realizes this trope after it's already in his mouth.

* LionKingLift: Takeo's mother recounts how when Takeo was born, he was held up for everyone to see a la Simba. Rinko then asks if it was a reference to ''WesternAnimation/TheLionKing1994'', only for Mrs. Gouda to not understand the reference.

* LoveBubbles: A veritable Vesuvius of pastel bubbles and sparkles erupts when Takeo first sees Rinko. And then again when she visits his house to thank him. And then again when... look, this happens ''a lot'', and it's ''adorable''.

** Kurihara and Nanako, friends of Takeo and Rinko respectively, enter one in episode 17 after he manages to give her a LoveConfession.

** Takeo and Rinko do this for Kurihara and Nanako in episode 17. However, it initially doesn't go very well, largely because Kurihara acts very immature around her.

** At the end of episode 18, Takeo thanks Makoto for his help in that episode regarding the "small bug" that landed on his lips during his birthday with Rinko.

** Takeo and Rinko initially. Both liked each other, but Takeo assumed that Rinko was actually interested in Suna, while Rinko was suffering from CannotSpitItOut. Fortunately Suna fixes the problem for them in episode 3.
** Kurihara and Nanako. Both ask Takeo and Rinko respectively about the other person in episode 17. Though Takeo and Rinko attempt to do their best at being a ShipperOnDeck, it doesn't go so well largely due to Kurihara acting very buffoonish and immature.

** In episode 17, Nanako, one of Rinko's friends, gets mad at her and Takeo's attempts to get her closer to Kurihara. The latter meanwhile repeatedly blows his chances with her by saying ridiculous things to her throughout the group outing, causing Nanako to leave in frustration.

Takeo is a very kind person who uses his amazing physical abilities to help people, but he's never had any luck with girls because they think he's [[FaceOfAThug ugly or intimidating]]. Every girl Takeo falls for seems to be attracted instead to his good-looking best friend Makoto Sunakawa, who always turns them down. One day, Takeo rescues a girl named Rinko Yamato from a molester on the train, falling in love with her at first sight in the process. Afterwards she offers him her home-made sweets and starts hanging out with him and Suna. Takeo assumes that Yamato is just grateful that he helped her and that she's interested in Suna, but what he doesn't realize is that Yamato is actually in love with him! Could this be the beginning of Takeo's first romance?

* RealityEnsues: Taeko punching someone in front of the police causes him to get in trouble himself.

* CastingGag: It isn't the first time that Kazuyo Aoki has been a "Mama Gouda", since she was once [[Manga/{{Doraemon}} Takeshi Gouda]]'s mom!

** He does it AGAIN for a complete stranger when her son falls off of a bridge into a river and nearly drowns. Takeo saving somebody and the Suna getting the credit for it is a bit of a RunningGag.

* AnguishedDeclarationOfLove: In episode 3, when Suna realizes that Takeo is so ObliviousToLove that he will not believe that Yamato is in love with him unless he hears it directly from her, he tells Takeo to hide under the bed while he talks to Yamato. While she's crying about how Takeo hasn't responded to her feelings, Suna asks her if she loves him, and when she answers yes, he makes her repeat it to him several times. Takeo then rises from under Suna's bed, finally realizing she likes him, not Suna, and they proceed to properly confess their love to each other.

** Suna by extension is one as well. He, often coldly rejects one LoveConfession after another from various girls, but does it because, in addition to not feeling the same, said girls tended to badmouth Takeo behind his back. He also provides Takeo with a lot of advice on dating.

** Yamato, have of an OddCouple pairing, goes to the [[Manga/LovelyComplex Koizumi]] Girls' Academy.

** Intensified by the fact that Yamato is perhaps the shortest recurring female character in the cast, aside from Maki.

* YourCheatingHeart: Ai initially assumes this was something Yamato was doing behind Takeo's back, and confronts her about it. [[spoiler:But it turns out Yamato just wanted to hold hands with Takeo, about the extent of her "impure" thoughts she claimed to be harboring, and worried Takeo wouldn't like her anymore. But Ai reassures her that he wouldn't do that.]]

* {{Adorkable}}: Much humor is derived from Takeo's awkwardness or responses to situations. Yamato often acts like this when she's around Takeo, as he is capable of leaving her flustered very easily. This often makes scenes of the two together both adorable and amusing.

** In honor of ''Bessatsu Margaret'''s 50th anniversary in 2012, Aruko and Kazune Kawahara collaborated with Io Sakisaka and created a CrossOver with ''Manga/AoHaruRide'', titled "''Ore Ride!''", where the two male protagonists have a FreakyFridayFlip with each other.

** Most girls that Takeo is interested in keep going after his {{Bishonen}} best friend Suna, who is completely disinterested. However, Takeo is far too nice a guy to hold it against him. [[spoiler:Turns out that Suna has been turning them down partly because most of them had been badmouthing Takeo behind his back. Suna also pushes Takeo and Yamato into confessing to each other.]] Suna is a total bro.

* AdaptationDistillation: The anime adapts part of the Manga (roughly chapters 1 to 27, so about half), cutting, rearranging, and occasionally [[AdaptationExpansion expanding]] upon content in those chapters.
