[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1a97f81d0b74e16f26e4081cdd9718ce.png]]''My Love Story!!'' (''Ore Monogatari!!'') is a manga written by Kazune Kawahara (''Manga/HighSchoolDebut'''s author) and drawn by Aruko. The manga ran in ''Bessatsu Margaret'' from 2011 to 2016.

The story follows giant high school freshman Takeo Goda. Takeo is a very kind person who uses his amazing physical abilities to help people, but he's never had any luck with girls because they think he's [[FaceOfAThug ugly or intimidating]]. Every girl Takeo falls for seems to be attracted instead to his good-looking best friend Makoto Sunakawa, who always turns them down. One day, Takeo rescues a girl named Rinko Yamato from a molester on the train, falling in love with her at first sight in the process. Afterwards she offers him her home-made sweets and starts hanging out with him and Suna. Takeo assumes that Yamato is just grateful that he helped her and that she's interested in Suna, but what he doesn't realize is that Yamato is actually in love with him! Could this be the beginning of Takeo's first romance?

Creator/VizMedia released the series in the US and an anime adaptation produced by Creator/{{Madhouse}} was part of the spring 2015 anime line-up. Later in the same year, a live-action adaptation was also made.

----
!!This series contains examples of:

* AdaptationDistillation: The anime adapts part of the Manga (roughly chapters 1 to 35), cutting, rearranging, and occasionally [[AdaptationExpansion expanding]] upon content in those chapters.
* AdaptationalAttractiveness: The live action version of Takeo is downright attractive at times despite still keeping his exaggerated expressions.
* ACupAngst: In episode 15, when referring to Saijou to her friends, Yamato mentions that she has "a nice chest", prompting her friends to question why that's what she noticed about the other girl.
* ADayInTheLimelight:
** Episode 14 focuses heavily on Ai, and thanks to Hayato's scheming, gives her a few hours alone with Takeo at the amusement park.
** Episode 19 is this for Takeo's parents, as Yuriko prepares to give birth to her second child and Yutaka tells Takeo how he fell in love with her.
* AnAesop: When some boys in the class begin talking about only wanting to go to the beach to ogle the girls in swimsuits, Takeo loudly tells them to just not come since the girls are wearing swimsuits ''to swim'' not because they want people to stare at them creepily. When one of the boys tries to insinuate Takeo obviously is going to ogle his girlfriend when she's in a swimsuit Takeo shuts that down too, pointing out that Yamato will be wearing a swimsuit to ''swim'' so of course he's not going to perv on her for it.
** ironically it then cuts to the girls buying swimsuits with Yamato specifically aiming to wear one that'll arouse Takeo.
* AffectionateParody: The series ''definitely'' has fun with many romance manga tropes.
* AmazinglyEmbarrassingParents: In episode 12, when Takeo's parents discover that Yamato is his girlfriend, they clumsily attempt to dote on her while she's with him trying to study.
* AmusingInjuries: Takeo's skin darkens and his hair is perm-charred after he escapes from a burning building in episode 4. He even gives Yamato a CooldownHug ''while actively on fire''. Made a little more hilarious because most of his suit burned off, leaving him with only the front of his shirt, his tie, and the top part of his pants (with a hole around most of his butt). And he still looks this way after arriving home, and presumably bathing.
* AnguishedDeclarationOfLove: In episode 3, when Suna realizes that Takeo is so ObliviousToLove that he will not believe that Yamato is in love with him unless he hears it directly from her, he tells Takeo to hide under the bed while he talks to Yamato. While she's crying about how Takeo hasn't responded to her feelings, Suna asks her if she loves Takeo, and when she answers yes, he makes her repeat it to him several times. Takeo then comes out from under Suna's bed--finally realizing she likes him, not Suna--and they proceed to properly confess their love to each other.
* ApologizesALot: Yamato's entire family, save for her sister, Noriko
* AssholeVictim: The man molesting Yamato on the train. First he tries to weasel out of it by [[WoundedGazelleGambit claiming innocence]] when at the police station, then just up and confirms it all for the joy of claiming Yamato enjoyed it. Takeo gets so pissed he punches him halfway through a wall without even thinking.
* AttractivenessIsolation: Suna deals with this from time to time - some people avoid him in part because he appears so aloof and attractive. Part of why he's such good friends with Takeo is that Takeo is never put off by this.
* BeachEpisode: Episode 11 has Takeo and Yamato go to the beach with Suna and their other friends.
* BigDamnHeroes:
** Takeo does this for Yamato, saving her from a molester, and later a falling girder.
** Takeo again saves two of Yamato's friends in a burning restaurant. This immediately changes their opinion of him after he does that.
** He does it AGAIN for a complete stranger when her son falls off of a bridge into a river and nearly drowns. Takeo saving somebody and then Suna getting the credit for it is a bit of a RunningGag.
* BigEater: Takeo can scarf down quite a bit of food, though it's not too surprising considering how big he is.
* BigFun: According to Suna, Takeo is just too fun to have around, attracting people of all types. The guy's basically a living, breathing landmark, filled to the brim with positiveness, boundless energy and kindness. Takeo is not fat, though; he's gigantic in every sense of the matter, especially his heart.
* TheBigGuy: Takeo's build is not just for show - he's participated in judo for at least a decade, and he's an excellent runner for both speed and stamina on top of that. He starts off by catching a falling girder before it lands on an unaware Suna and Yamato, and goes from there.
* BittersweetEnding: The ending for the Red Ogre play. The Blue Ogre plays the bad guy so that his friend the Red Ogre can "beat him up" and save the villagers, thus causing them to like him. While this works, the Red Ogre wonders why his friend doesn't visit anymore, and goes to his house. He finds a note that the Blue Ogre left stating he was going on a journey, and didn't want to be seen around the Red Ogre, lest the villagers suddenly mistrust him again.
* BlamingTheVictim: Kicking off the entire series, a man who was caught groping Yamato on the train tries to defend himself by saying she was "asking for it". [[{{Understatement}} Takeo disagrees.]] [[MegatonPunch Strongly.]]
* BlueWithShock: Ai does this a few times whenever Hayato is around in episode 13.
* {{Bookworm}}: Suna and Yukika are voracious readers. As a matter of fact, this is how Suna spends most of his free time at home. This is also one of the aspects that Suna fondly remembers the most about Yukika, who has accompanied him and Takeo from kindergarten all the way to high school, even with the distance she's kept.
* BookDumb: Takeo is implied to be one, with Suna telling him from time to time to study.
* BookEnds:
** The beginning of the anime introduces the story of the Red and Blue Ogre. The final picture at the end of episode 24 shows the two ogres again.
** The beginning of the first chapter shows Takeo's graduation from junior high. The final chapter shows Takeo's graduation from high school, with the panels drawn almost the same way. [[spoiler: Both are also followed by a scene of Takeo rushing to see the girl he likes at the time and ends up seeing her with Suna, but in the latter scene both Yamato and Suna are waiting for him, and at this point Yamato and Takeo are already committed to marry once they get older]].
* BridalCarry: Takeo does this twice in the manga:
** Once when [[spoiler: his mother goes into labor]] and the only other wheelchair is being used for someone else
** Later when Yamato twists her ankle slightly as they're walking home together
* BrosBeforeHoes:
** Most girls that Takeo is interested in keep going after his {{Bishonen}} best friend Suna, who is completely uninterested. However, Takeo is far too nice a guy to hold it against him. [[spoiler:Turns out that Suna has been turning them down partly because most of them had been badmouthing Takeo behind his back. Suna also pushes Takeo and Yamato into confessing to each other.]] Suna is a total bro.
** It goes both ways as, when [[spoiler:Suna's father is hospitalized]], Takeo stays by his side to support him, even though it meant abandoning taking Yamato out on her birthday; a date Suna helped plan and had insisted Takeo go on instead of worrying about him (though he later admits he isn't surprised when Takeo shows up anyway).
* ButForMeItWasTuesday:
** Takeo and Yamato are initially worried they had the wrong day when they throw Suna a SurpriseParty in episode 13. However, Suna verifies it was correct and today was his birthday, but he hadn't given it much thought.
** In episode 14, when Ai asks Takeo about what he said about her resembling a flower when they were younger, he says he doesn't recall that event. But then he essentially recreates that incident by spotting the same flower at the amusement park, and telling her that she resembles that flower.
* ButNowIMustGo: Ai leaves shortly after helping Yamato and Takeo clear up some misunderstandings they had with each other. When Suna says she should stay a little longer, she says this is for the best, [[spoiler:as she doesn't want Takeo to see her crying after finding out he's dating Yamato.]]
* CannotSpitItOut:
** Yamato in particular finds herself frequently unable to say just what's on her mind, and she quickly gets mortified over the prospect. Takeo was initially this way as well, as he thought Yamato liked Suna. Suna had to trick them both to get them to finally confess to each other.
** This happens a couple more times from Yamato. She constantly fears expressing her desires in fear that Takeo will think different of her and reject her, even when the issue is as simple as [[spoiler:wanting to hold hands]]. The fact that Takeo is dense skyrockets the drama, since he breaks his head trying to figure it out and Yamato is slowly dying unable to speak.
* CassandraTruth:
** In episode 3, Suna tells Takeo that Yamato likes him. Takeo, understandably being ObliviousToLove, refuses to believe it, even after his friend tells him everything Yamato asked about him during their first date. It takes Yamato repeatedly saying that she likes him for Takeo to finally believe it.
** During episode 5, Ai, Suna's older sister, returns home from college, and doesn't believe him when he says that Takeo has a girlfriend.
* CasualDangerDialogue:
** In episode 4, Takeo manages to escape from a burning building after Suna calls him and tells him that Yamato is crying, and that he'd be lonely without his friend. Takeo suddenly gets a HeroicSecondWind, and bursts through the windows from an upper level floor. After he hits the ground, his clothing is on fire, and Suna is the only one trying to put it out while the others mostly just stand around commenting on how cool Takeo is.
** In episode 6, Suna and Ai spot Takeo rescuing a cat from a tree. He talks to the two while it's clawing his face, and seems oblivious to the scratches the cat is doing.
** In episode 10, Takeo and Yamato accidentally fall down a cliff after a bird mistakes the pin on her sweater for food. Takeo ends up running down the cliff and then lands rather hard on the ground. When Yamato asks if he's okay, he says he's fine.
** In episode 17, Kurihara climbs a large Christmas tree in order to get the star that urban legend says would cause whoever they ask out to say yes. He's not too worried about all the cuts he's gotten from the pine needles, and later when he grabs the star, he doesn't bother to think about maintaining his grip, and falls off the tree. Fortunately Takeo breaks his fall.
* ChasteHero: Takeo is so used to girls taking interest in Suna than him that he is completely oblivious to Yamato's affections for him at first. It takes Suna [[spoiler: forcing them to confess their feelings for one another for Takeo to realize that it's him Yamato likes, not Suna.]] Takeo's hesitation when it comes to progressing their relationship's intimacy is often a source of frustration to Yamato, as is Takeo's obliviousness when she tries to take the initiative.
** When he eventually breaks out of this, it's a cause of significant distress, since he's afraid of somehow hurting Yamato because of it.
* ChekhovsGun: Early in the series, Takeo's mom Yuriko mentions that she carried another pregnant woman into the OR when she was in labor herself. [[spoiler:When Yuriko's about to give birth to her second child in episode 19, Takeo carries her around the hospital.]]
* TheChikan: Yamato's first appearance is being rescued from one by Takeo.
* ChildhoodFriends: Takeo and Suna have known each other for at least a decade, having started out in kindergarten together.
* ChristmasEpisode: Episode 17 has Takeo and Yamato, along with Suna, spend Christmas Eve together with their classmates at a karaoke bar.
* CliffHanger:
** Episode 13 ends on one, right before Takeo and the others head to the amusement park. [[spoiler:Hayato, a guy attending the same college as Ai, tells her he'll get her some time alone with Takeo so she can tell him how she feels, and subsequently move on with her life.]]
** At the end of episode 23, Takeo runs through the rain in order to get an umbrella to Yamato so she wouldn't get drenched after leaving her part time job. Unfortunately he sees her in the back seat of a baker who works with her, and straight up told Takeo that he's not a good fit for Yamato. The car passes by Takeo on his way there, and he sees Yamato laughing and chatting with the guy.
* ClingyJealousGirl:
** Ai, Suna's older sister, does not take it well when he tells her that Takeo has a girlfriend in episode 5. She even goes so far as to track them down with GPS at the park.
** Yamato is so head over heels for Takeo that she finds it bewildering that Takeo isn't more popular with girls. She gets very nervous and competitive when she gets so much as an inkling (real or not) that other girls may be interested in him, such as Saijou in episode 15.
* ClosetShuffle: Suna has Takeo hide under his bed in episode 3 after his mother tells them Yamato came over. Because Takeo is so big however, the legs on his bed are slightly off the ground, which Yamato fails to notice.
* ClothingDamage: Takeo's suit burns off in episode 4 after he escapes a burning building.
* ColorFailure:
** The boys in Takeo's class do this in episode 4 after he asks if any of them have a girlfriend.
** Yamato's female friends also do this from time to time during the singles meet a short while later.
** Yamato suffers a brief one in episode 17 when Nanako says she's already had her FirstKiss with Kurihara, despite dating him for only a short while. Meanwhile she has yet to kiss Takeo.
* ComedicWorkSeriousScene: This romantic comedy about a HugeGuyTinyGirl pairing has its serious moments.
** Episode 4, Takeo and Yamato overhear the latter's friends badmouthing the former. Yamato runs off in tears. Later, a fire breaks out, and Takeo heroically saves the girls who had insulted him.
** Suna's father has to have surgery. Takeo tells Yamato, leaving her alone on her birthday so he can sit with his friend. They find Yamato in the lobby, making origami cranes as part of an old superstition about granting a wish, which Suna graciously accepts.
* CoolBigSis: Ai attempted to act this way towards Suna and Takeo when they were younger.
* CourtlyLove: It's clear that Takeo will do anything for Yamato, and tells her that he won't lay a finger on her until they're older. [[spoiler: He doesn't even allow himself to hold hands with her, until Yamato voices her desire to.]]
* CovertPervert: Ultimately a subversion, but Yamato can accidentally come off as this. She frets about not being as "pure" as Takeo thinks she is [[spoiler:because she ''really'' wants to be able to hold hands with him]], and she considers multiple very risque swimsuits when shopping for a trip to the beach. In the latter case, she ''is'' trying to pick something provocative to get Takeo's heart racing, like he so often does to her, but is overcompensating because she feels like she has the body of a little kid next to him. A straight example occurs when Yamato and Takeo are stuck overnight in the mountains and she makes a ''far'' bigger deal of it than Takeo does. Her friends also make certain assumptions when they suspect she and Takeo are "spending the night together".
* CrazyPrepared: Takeo intended to bring a lot of items to the beach, such as cooking pans. Suna says it's overkill, but Takeo says he wants to be ready for anything.
* CreditsRunningSequence: In a slight variance on the trope, Takeo does a walking version in the ending.
* CrossOver:
** In honor of ''Bessatsu Margaret'''s 50th anniversary in 2012, Aruko and Kazune Kawahara collaborated with Io Sakisaka and created a CrossOver with ''Manga/BlueSpringRide'', titled "''Ore Ride!''", where the two male protagonists have a FreakyFridayFlip with each other.
** ''Ore Monogatari'' also had a crossover with ''Manga/{{Nisekoi}}'', for a ''Weekly Shonen Jump'' x ''Bessatsu Margaret'' collaboration titled "''Ore Koi!''"
* CrushBlush: Takeo and Yamato are very prone to this when interacting with one another. They both get pretty big ones once they see each other in swimsuits during the BeachEpisode, [[CantActPervertedTowardALoveInterest though Takeo has to mentally backtrack so that he can at least function around her]]. Yamato doesn't, so HilarityEnsues.
* TheCutie: Yamato is quite a cute girl.
* DeathGlare: Takeo does this a few times at seemingly suspicious men in the first episode at the elementary school after hearing that a pedophile may be in the area. Unfortunately this gets a cop involved, who ends up scolding the lad. He later does it again in episode 11 to keep his friends from gawking at Yamato's friends too much.
* DeclarationOfProtection: Takeo's father tells a story of giving his mother such a declaration. Though immediately afterward he tells Takeo that she's such a strong person he never got to be able to actually protect her.
* DistractedByTheSexy: Takeo several times in episode 11. He nearly falls over after seeing Yamato in a swimsuit, until Suna helps calm him down and tells him to think of it as clothing you wear while swimming.
* TheDitz: Takeo, particularly about emotions. While he can tell very vague generalities (like someone being happy or upset in general), he cannot for the life of him get a read on the specifics. One non-romantic example: Takeo participated in judo for years, even going to nationals, but isn't on the high school judo team because ''he forgot to sign up''.
* DoubleStandardAbuseFemaleOnMale: While Ai's treatment of Hayato is entirely deserved for the most part, given he's basically stalking and harassing her, the "threaten-with-a-fork" bit probably wouldn't be played for laughs had the genders be reversed. It helps that for their part, Takeo and the others weren't paying attention to them at that point, and generally don't seem to have a clue what's going on, simply commenting on some tension between them.
* DramaPanes: In episode 4 Suna and Yamato are staring up at the third floor window of a restaurant they'd been at, which had caught fire. Takeo is still in the restaurant, and the flames are getting worse. Cue a SuperWindowJump from Takeo, who lands safely, and embraces Yamato, even though he's literally on fire. Thankfully, Takeo is MadeOfIron, so he's unharmed.
* EntertaininglyWrong:
** Most of the girls that Takeo likes end up falling for Suna, though he unequivocally rejects every single one of them. Takeo thinks that he does it because he just has the liberty to do so, but it's actually because he doesn't like that [[spoiler:they talk smack about Takeo behind his back]].
** It's also said that those girls only know Takeo superficially, but those that go beyond (like Yamato's friends) learn to recognize Takeo as a stalwart, manly individual who is attractive in his own way.
* EpicFail:
** In episode 18, Yamato works up her courage to give Takeo their FirstKiss. Unfortunately, he was so lost in thought at the moment thinking back to how he would never forget this birthday, that he didn't even notice she kissed him. Takeo only realizes it after describing to Makoto that a "small, soft bug" landed on his lips while he was making a wish. Even then, Makoto still has to point it out to him that it was a kiss. [[spoiler:Fortunately they re-do it properly shortly afterwards when he runs to her house.]]
** Suna getting a LoveConfession from [[spoiler:Yukika.]] Unfortunately right after she does it, she runs off before he can reply, prompting Takeo to chase after her as he was attempting to help her and was just as shocked by the sudden confession as she was.
* EvolvingCredits: Starting with the fifth episode, a little doll of Yamato joins Takeo at the end of the opening song. Episode seven introduces a Suna doll to go with them.
* ExpressiveShirt: Takeo's shirt keeps changing slogans based on what's happening in a given scene throughout chapter 6. For instance it starts as "Promise" then changes to "Bowling" when he and Yamato go to a bowling alley on their date. It also changes a lot in episode 23, often changing within seconds after Takeo hears about new information.
* {{Expy}}: Suna is very close to being a GenderFlipped version of Mami from Kawahara's previous manga, ''Manga/HighSchoolDebut''. Both are attractive, utterly devoted to the viewpoint character, and more interested in being a RomanticWingman than pursuing romance themselves. Both also have a similar mellow personality and share mild exasperation with how clueless their best friend and confidant can be.
* FacePlant: Yamato trips in episode 6 and does this. She then immediately gets back up and runs off as if nothing happened.
* FamilialChiding: Yuriko Gouda starts chiding her husband, her son Takeo, and her son's best friend Suna when they all start being overly concerned about her during her pregnancy, such as when Suna offers to help carry her groceries.
--> '''Yuriko:''' Oh, not you too!
--> '''Suna:''' ''(giving one of his rare smiles)'' Well, at least I'm not as bad as Takeo.
* FirstNameBasis:
** Becomes a plot-point in episode 23. Suna asks Takeo about that, calling Yamato by her first name. But Takeo is very nervous about it. He tests it out, calling Suna by his first name, "Makoto", causing the latter to suffer a ColorFailure, seeing as it's an entirely different situation, and likely because he was a little embarrassed as well. Unfortunately one of the male bakers at Yamato's part time job calls her by her first name, causing a lot of unease in Takeo.
** When Nanako and Kurihara start dating, Kurihara drops the "-chan" honorific and Nanako begins calling him "Osamu."
* FlashStep:
** Yamato does this in episode 11 when attempting to approach Takeo during lunch. As he turns around, she gets nervous, and immediately appears several meters away behind a wooden column.
** Takeo does this in episode 14 at the amusement park.
* ForcefulKiss: Done to Suna in episode 6 [[spoiler:by Takeo, who wanted practice in kissing.]]
** [[spoiler: Oda gives one to Ai]] after yet another AnguishedDeclarationOfLove. Notable in that it's portrayed in a very bad light and earns him a full force punch from ''[[BewareTheNiceOnes Takeo]]'' because it makes her cry.
* ForgottenFirstMeeting: A side story in volume 4 of the manga has Takeo meeting another child in a cave he had wandered into. Between the darkness, the other child's very short hair, and scary stories he'd been told about the cave, Takeo thought it was the ghost of a little boy who'd been lost. While he thought he helped the ghost move on by leading him out, we later see the child among family being called "Rinko."
* FreezeFrameBonus: In episode 3, when Yamato comes over to Suna's house, he has Takeo hide under his bed. Two brief cuts of one of the bed legs is shown. If you pause it, you can see that the legs are raised slightly off the ground, though Yamato doesn't notice this when she sits on the bed.
* FreudianSlip: A FlashBack seen in episode 14 shows that Hayato first learned about Takeo when Ai mentioned his name while under hypnosis, and crying when she says that he already has a girlfriend.
* FriendToAllChildren: Not surprisingly, kids quickly take to Takeo after they get over the shock at his sheer size. It helps that he enjoys playing games with them.
** Suna encroaches in this territory too, especially with how well he gets along with Maki, even offering to babysit and play with her multiple times.
* FriendToAllLivingThings: Despite being usually the province of beautiful maidens, Takeo is able to attract all manner of wildlife to flock to him without even trying when he's in the wilderness.
* FriendshipMoment: A neverending string of them between Takeo and Suna.
* GentleGiant: Takeo looks intimidating, but he's a pretty sweet guy. In a FlashBack, even when losing repeatedly against Suna in video games, though understandably upset, he never gets angry at Suna.
* GetAHoldOfYourselfMan: Takeo asks Suna to hit him if he ever starts to severely misstep in his relationship with Yamato. Eventually, [[spoiler: after Takeo breaks up with Yamato because he thinks he's hurting her with their LongDistanceRelationship,]] Suna follows through with his promise.
* GivingUpTheGhost: A slightly variation of this occurs in episode 10 when Yamato finds out she'll have to spend the night out in the woods with Takeo after they get lost. Multiple spirits pop out of her and enter {{Squee}}-mode. At one point she even grabs them and pulls them back in.
* {{Gonk}}: Takeo is practically the poster child for the type - huge lips, flat-top haircut, stark facial features, harsh eyes, bushy eyebrows, large nose... the announcement of the manga's launch in ''Bessatsu Margaret'' was even "Ugly guys are in!" due to his looks. Not surprisingly, Takeo's parents are no lookers, either - that apple didn't fall far from the tree.
* GratuitousEnglish:
** The birthday song sung to Yamato in episode 9.
** She sings it to Takeo in episode 18 in English as well.
* HappilyMarried: Suna's and Takeo's parents seem to be this way.
** As do Yamato's
* HeavySleeper: Takeo sleeps through the night in the woods during episode 10, despite having been bitten by a lot of mosquitos.
* HelpingAnotherSaveFace: When attempting to set up Rinko and Suna as a couple (not knowing Rinko loved him) Takeo tells her about all the times Suna helped him, such as when Takeo had accidentally peed himself, and Suna laughed, but Suna also grabbed a bucket of water and doused the both of them so that no one would know.
* HeroicBSOD:
** Kurihara suffers one after Nanako gets fed up with his antics in episode 17.
** Yamato goes through one at the end of episode 17 after finding out Nanako already had her FirstKiss with Kurihara, despite having only dated for a short time. Meanwhile, she has yet to do the deed with Takeo.
** Takeo goes through one when he believes Yamato will fall for Ichinose.
*** Takeo goes through a {{downplayed}} one again after [[spoiler: Yamato moves to Spain with her family]]
* HeroicSecondWind:
** When Takeo catches the falling girder in episode 2, Suna goes to cover Yamato. He seems to slowly lose his strength as he imagines the two together, and seems content with it. But once he sees his friend, and then Yamato, attempting to help him hold up the girder, he suddenly develops a surge of power, and manages to lift and toss the girder completely by himself.
** In episode 4, after he saves Yamato's second friend stuck inside the burning building, the weight of the rubble begins to overwhelm him. Like with the girder, Takeo seems content with dying. But once Suna calls him, and he hears Yamato crying for him outside, along with Suna saying he would be lonely without his friend, Takeo suddenly gets renewed strength and manages to escape by jumping through the windows.
** Kurihara has one near the end of episode 17 after he blows repeated opportunities to ask out Nanako. He then decides to go for the star on top of the giant Christmas tree which urban legend says will make whoever they ask out say yes. Though Yamato manages to call Nanako back, Kurihara's own words at why he likes her helps her to see that he's not such a bad guy after all.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: Takeo and Suna. They're not that similar at a glance, but they're totally inseparable.
* HighPressureEmotion:
** Yamato does this quite often around Takeo.
** He does it occasionally as well. At the end of episode 18, he does it so much that Makoto is forced to open his window as his room was getting a little hot.
* HoldingInLaughter: Takeo is the only person who has ever succeeded in making his friend Suna laugh. Once in awhile Suna while ''try'' to hide it.
** In the first episode we get a downplayed example when Takeo tries to be a neighborhood watch unto himself after hearing a creep was stalking grade school kids. Instead he gets MistakenForPedophile by the cops and told to move on. His best friend, Suna, tries to hold in laughter for all of a second before just giving in and laughing loudly.
** When trying to plan activities for Yamato's birthday with Takeo, the locations that they plan on remind Suna of amusing stories from their youth, and he recalls them while trying to contain his laughter, as he's trying to be serious about the planning. He's not particularly successful, and Takeo notes with a mix of embarrassment and irritation that Suna remembers a lot of things.
** Takeo asks Suna to help him train for a practice exam for Murisaki, the school Yamato plans on attending. Suna barely holds it together as he quizzes Takeo on vocabulary words and instead of giving definitions, Takeo acts them out. Then comes the punchline for the whole episode; Murisaki is an All-Girl's University, and Suna knew it all along. When Takeo discovers this, Suna drops any pretext of trying to hide his laughter.
* HopelessSuitor:
** Takeo before meeting Yamato. Every single girl he liked prior showed no obvious interest in him. However, their trash talking about Takeo behind his back prompts Suna to use this on them as well, coldly rejecting every single one of them when they gave him a LoveConfession.
** Ai, who had a crush on Takeo, but never made any moves on him before Yamato entered his life. It's also probable that Takeo would have rejected had she of confessed to him, probably seeing her more like an older sister than a potential lover.
** Saijou begins to notice Takeo after he helps her prepare for a sports festival. However, she is quick to realize she hasn't got a chance when she learns Takeo already has Yamato. She ''tries'' to keep the relationship platonic, but can't keep it up for long. She eventually confesses and Takeo is forced to break her heart.
** Yukika towards Suna. Though she gets along with Takeo and Yamato, she's very shy around Suna, and isn't able to say much. His feelings towards her seems mostly neutral, in that while he doesn't automatically reject her like he's done towards every other girl, he also doesn't seem romantically interested in her either. She just happens to be an acquaintance of his from a long time ago, though unlike all other girls that approach him, he's friendly with her and is at the very least willing to give her the benefit of the doubt.
* HotBlooded: Takeo - his emotions frequently flare up, although most of the time he tries his best to just be passionate and not have his emotions overtake him. The one time he doesn't even try to restrain himself is with the groper saying all those nasty things, but really, who could blame him?
* HotBloodedSideburns: Normally, Takeo's sideburns are closely trimmed, but when a wild boar started to act aggressive near Yamato, Takeo's sideburns flared out impressively as he performed a judo throw on the boar.
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: Takeo and Yamato, with the former being two meters tall and her barely reaching his chest.
** Intensified by the fact that Yamato is perhaps the shortest recurring female character in the cast, aside from Maki, who is a baby.
* ICantBelieveAGuyLikeYouWouldNoticeMe:
** Gender-Flipped. The reason Takeo is so oblivious to love is due to having all the girls he liked preferring Suna over him. So, he thinks the same of Yamato when it's otherwise clear she wants to be with Takeo.
** Yukika is surprised at the notion that Suna remembers her in the first place, and he's wholly aware that they've gone through their school years together with Takeo.
* IdiosyncraticEpisodeNaming: The anime's episode titles follow a "My <something>" pattern, with a few exceptions.
* IndirectKiss: Done in episode 17, after Yamato is unable to eat a piece of food that was too spicy for her. Takeo then eats it without a second thought so as not to waste it. He then realizes this trope after it's already in his mouth.
* InsaneTrollLogic: Takeo uses this in episode 6 when he asks Suna for a favor. [[spoiler:He wants to practice kissing, but doesn't want a pillow which has no reaction, nor another girl, which he considers cheating on Yamato. He then pulls some plastic wrap out, and presses it against Suna's face while trapping the latter by a wall.]]
* InsecureLoveInterest:
** Despite Takeo's constant reassurances, Yamato sometimes feels like he might leave her for another girl, such as in episode 15. Her friends telling her that some women like guys who are already dating another women, and will pursue them even more aggressively doesn't help much.
** Takeo gets a turn at this in episode 23, when Yamato gets a part time job at a bakery. One of the bakers who falls for her even bluntly tells Takeo they should break up because he'd be a better fit for her than him. The fact that the baker claims to have a stronger connection to her due to their interest in baked goods stuns Takeo, preventing him from doing more than just nod and listen to the guy.
* ItsAllMyFault: Suna says this to Takeo in episode 9 during the surgery for [[spoiler:his father.]] He blames himself for spending time at a bookstore before heading home, only to find out [[spoiler:his father was lying unconscious on the floor for some time when he arrived home. Since his sister and mother were overseas at the time, he felt responsible for not being there sooner.]] Takeo tells him not to beat himself up too much, nor feel responsible for what happened. Particularly as his family doesn't view it that way, nor does he. Suna sheds some ManlyTears as Takeo attempts to comfort him as best as he can.
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy:
** Takeo towards Suna and Yamato. She keeps doing nice things for him, but he assumes it's actually for Suna, so ends up trying to play TheMatchmaker.
** Suna's sister Ai has a long-time crush on [[spoiler:Takeo but decided not to confess to him after learning about his relationship with Yamato so as not to interfere with them, and more importantly, to preserve her CoolBigSis persona in front of Takeo.]]
* JailBaitWait: Ai planned to do this with Takeo. She is a few years older than he and Suna are, and was hoping he wouldn't be dating anyone by the time he started college so she could move in on him. Unfortunately he runs into and falls in love with Yamato first.
* LastNameBasis: Suna and Yamato are on a Last Name Basis with one another. Takeo refers to Yamato by her last name, even as she calls him Takeo. Suna's nickname is a shortening of his surname, Sunakawa.
* LaymansTerms: The surgeon tells Suna about the surgery and the condition [[spoiler:of his father]]. Takeo however, doesn't understand what he's saying, so he just grabs the poor surgeon and shakes him violently, asking if the patient was okay or not. The surgeon says yes, then wanders off a short distance before throwing up due to the dizziness from Takeo's shaking.
* LightningBruiser: Takeo is not only strong as befitting of his stature, but also incredibly fast. So much so that he catches up to Yamato, who was heading towards his apartment after talking to Ai and Suna despite being farther away at the time.
* LionKingLift: Takeo's mother recounts how when Takeo was born, he was held up for everyone to see a la Simba. Yamato then asks if it was a reference to ''WesternAnimation/TheLionKing1994'', only for Mrs. Gouda to not understand the reference.
* LoveAtFirstSight:
** Played straight with Yamato. She seems to take a liking to Takeo after he saves her from a molester on the train.
** Zigzagged with Takeo. He does fall in love with Yamato when he first catches a glimpse of her. But he assumes that she's actually interested in Suna, so keeps trying to fight back his emotions. Suna has a hard time convincing Takeo that Yamato actually likes him and has to really beat it into his friend's head to get the point across.
* LoveBubbles: A veritable Vesuvius of pastel bubbles and sparkles erupts when Takeo first sees Yamato. And then again when she visits his house to thank him. And then again when... look, this happens ''a lot'', and it's ''adorable''.
* LoveConfession:
** Suna has received many from girls, but has always rejected them. This greatly confuses Takeo, seeing how popular he is with the girls.
** Yamato does one for him in episode 3. Suna has to point it out repeatedly to Takeo, who is ObliviousToLove, and even has her say that she likes Takeo repeatedly. Only after this does Takeo then realize the truth, and he gives her one as well.
** Saijou gives one to Takeo in episode 16, despite knowing that he was already dating Yamato. But she does it because Suna mentioned how unhappy she looked any time she was around Takeo, and wanted to move past it. Fortunately Takeo says he still wants to be friends with her, and would support her when she finds another guy she likes.
** Suna gets one in episode 21 [[spoiler:by Yukika Amami]]. Made surprising by the fact that Takeo was helping her to break the ice with him, but after Suna remembered her, she blurts it out.
* LoveEpiphany: When Suna asks his sister why she fell in love with Takeo, Ai tells him about how when they were younger. Her classmates often made fun of her because she was tall and skinny, like a statue in front of their school. But Takeo told her she reminds him of a pretty flower as they pass by a floral shop.
* LoveInformant: Takeo and Yamato like each other, but Takeo thinks she likes Suna, his best friend, instead. After a date gone wrong because of it, Suna just straight up tells Takeo that he's the one Yamato likes. When Takeo still didn't believe him, Suna tricks Yamato herself into confessing her love.
* ManlyTears: Suna at the hospital during episode 9 after Takeo tells him to stop blaming himself so much for what happened [[spoiler:to his father collapsing at home and needing surgery to fix his heart.]]
* MistakenForFlirting: In the final two episodes of the anime, pastry chef Ichinose mistakes Rinko Yamato's interest in his pastry skills as flirtation, and when he learns she's going out with Takeo, he vows to win her over to him. [[HopelessSuitor He never stood a chance]]. Rinko only has eyes for Takeo.
* MistakenForGay: Takeo initially assumes Suna is this when the latter keeps seemingly dodging all his friend's questions about girls.
* MomentKiller:
** Two of Takeo's friends do this to him in episode 11 when he was about to share a kiss with Yamato while watching a sunset at the beach.
** Done to Ai and Takeo in episode 14 by an overhead announcement about the parade starting shortly. [[spoiler:She was about to give him a LoveConfession, but then reconsiders it after they're interrupted.]]
** Yamato and Takeo are nearly about to kiss in episode 14... until they spot Suna standing behind them, though he claims he was just there to watch the parade.
** Suna does this repeatedly for Takeo to stop Saijou's attempts at spending time alone with him in episodes 15 and 16. She has a disgusted look on her face everytime he does it as a result.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: In episode 14, Hayato seems to have second thoughts about his plan to have Ai confess to Takeo after realizing that Yamato is a nice girl, along with Ai not wanting to ruin their relationship even if it secretly hurts her inside.
** Takeo has a moment like this in episode 18 after realizing that [[spoiler:no, that was not a bug on his lips, that was Yamato giving him a kiss while his eyes were closed.]] He realizes how much his misunderstanding must have hurt Yamato, and runs to her house to make it up to her.
* NakedPeopleAreFunny: After rescuing two of Yamato's friends from a fire that caught at the place where they were at a mixer, most of Takeo's clothes were damaged by fire and falling debris. He walks away, confident in having done a good job - and his butt hanging out.
* NiceGuy:
** Takeo, bordering on TheMessiah. He stops men from groping girls on trains, he jumps into rivers to save children, he admonishes his male friends for wanting to eye up Yamato's friends while they're at the beach. He's the perfect gentleman.
** Suna by extension is one as well. He often coldly rejects one LoveConfession after another from various girls, but does it because, in addition to not feeling the same, said girls tended to badmouth Takeo behind his back. He also provides Takeo with a lot of advice on dating.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Takeo prevents Yamato from stepping on a sand castle two kids were building in episode 11. However, shortly afterwards she runs off, and he accidentally ends up walking into it instead. He then spends some time helping them rebuild it, until Suna takes over.
* NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished: Takeo, and viewers, no doubt felt great about him punching out the molester feeling up Yamato on the train. Unfortunately, justified or not, he does it in front of a policeman, and ends up getting suspended from school. And his attempt to scare away a potential pedophile from a grade school ends up getting the police called on him due to his scary appearance making people nearby uneasy.
* NonStandardCharacterDesign: Naturally, Takeo and both of his parents are this, considering that they're big, burly characters with shades of {{Gonk}} in a shojo romance series. Takeo's father in particular takes the cake, though, with a design that's highly reminiscent of 1970's and 1980's seinen characters. Appearance-wise, he wouldn't look out of place dealing with ''Manga/{{Golgo 13}}''.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: Takeo does this towards Yamato during their first meeting at the park. He also has a tendency to do this towards Suna from time to time as well. TheStinger at the end of episode 3 reveals that Suna finds this habit of Takeo funny, such as when he's pressed against the camera by his family's front door.
* NotWhatItLooksLike: In episode 15, Yamato meets Saijou, a female classmate of Takeo's. When she gives a towel to Takeo as thanks for helping her in the relay race, Yamato doesn't seem very happy by it. She also seems unhappy when he's giving Saijou a piggyback ride home due to spraining her ankle.
* ObliviousToLove: Yamato has a very obvious crush on Takeo at the start, however, he believes that she likes his best friend. He tries to pair the two together (despite Suna being [[ChasteHero uninterested]] in any girl who has ever liked him). All other girls have ignored him due to his {{gonk}} looks so he doesn't believe Yamato could like him. This lasts less than four episodes because Suna gets sick of [[WillTheyOrWontThey their]] [[CanNotSpitItOut pussyfooting]] [[PoorCommunicationKills around]] and gets them to notice each others feelings. They spend the rest of the series being the OfficialCouple.
* OddCouple:
** Takeo and Yamato. He's huge to begin with, so she looks smaller already. He looks like a gorilla or a bear, while she's cute as a button. Everything about them seems completely incompatible, but they're crazy about each other.
** [[CoolKidAndLoserFriendship The non-romantic example]] would be Takeo and Suna. Takeo is huge, boisterous, squarely built and looks intimidating. Suna is average height, thin, good looking, taciturn, the typical {{Bishonen}} high schooler. Turns out they actually have a lot more in common than you'd think, particularly a very strong loyalty to their friendship. Outsiders are often puzzled by the fact that the two guys are friends.
* OhCrap: Suna has this look in the second half of episode 6 after Takeo asks him for a favor. [[spoiler:He wants to practice kissing, which Suna is understandably against, and is forced into it.]]
* OneDialogueTwoConversations: Yamato telling her friends about the night she spent with Takeo in the woods after they got lost. She is telling the truth, such as spending time outside and that it was her "first time" alone with him for that long. But to her friends, they assume she was talking about sex.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: Takeo accidentally does this a few times at the beach, and ends up becoming the center of attention a few times while playing with his friends.
* PhraseCatcher: Takeo and his father both open any conversation with Takeo's mother with "Is your body all right?" after she becomes pregnant with her second child.
* PintSizedPowerhouse: Yamato is actually stronger than she looks, due to being an avid baker (which takes more strength than you'd think) that eschews electrical appliances. For example, the girder that Takeo catches in chapter 1? Yamato pushes it off of his shoulders to make sure he doesn't collapse under it.
* PleaseDontLeaveMe: Suna calls Takeo in episode 4 while the latter was trapped under some debris in a burning building. He tells his friend Yamato is crying over him, and she can be heard crying and screaming for him while her friends try to prevent her from running in. Suna then also says he'd be lonely without his friend. Takeo suddenly gets a HeroicSecondWind and bursts through the windows to escape the fire.
* PottyFailure: Takeo tells Yamato a story from when he was in first grade. He used to hold it in a lot, but one day he peed his pants. His friend Suna splashed a bucket of water on him so everyone would think he just got water on his shorts.
* PregnantBadass: Takeo's mom. She caught and carried another pregnant woman in the hospital ''while in labor'' with Takeo. She does it again before going into labor with Maki, catching an anemic pregnant woman who fainted during a walk.
* PunchedAcrossTheRoom: Takeo does this to the pervert who molested Yamato on the train.
* QueerPeopleAreFunny: Played with in a pretty non-offensive way. Takeo gets a job at a macho-gay cafe without realizing anything is different about the place, that his uniform is a bit revealing, or that the all-male customers are swooning over him. However, the guests at the cafe act completely normally and are not played for comedy. The comedy comes from Takeo's usual obliviousness and his "sexy" uniform.
* RedOniBlueOni: Takeo is the red, Suna is the blue. Takeo even retells the story to Yamato while noting that he and Suna played those respective roles when doing the story as a play in elementary school.
* RelationshipSabotage:
** Ai attempts to do this subtly in episode 5, suggesting that Yamato has some kind of secret she won't share with Takeo. She then wonders if said secret is that Yamato was cheating on him behind his back.
** Hinted at unintentionally in episode 13, when Hayato tells Ai he'll make it so that she has some time alone with Takeo so she can tell him how she really feels, as she hasn't quite gotten over him yet. [[spoiler:Unfortunately there is an urban legend that couples going to the park together have a tendency to break up shortly afterwards...]]
* RelationshipUpgrade:
** Takeo and Yamato go through one in episode 3, after a lot of misunderstandings are cleared up.
** Kurihara and Nanako, friends of Takeo and Yamato respectively, enter one in episode 17 after he manages to give her a LoveConfession.
* RescueRomance: Yamato is completely smitten with Takeo after he saves her from a man molesting her on the train.
* RightBehindMe: Takeo overhears Suna's confession that [[spoiler: he's getting lonely ever since Takeo decided to "bother" Suna less with questions/asking for advice]].
* RomanticWingman: Suna acts as this to Takeo, helping him get with Yamato.
* RunningGag:
** Nearly every time Takeo does something to help or save somebody they immediately start thanking Suna for the help.
** Takeo and Yamato repeatedly try to take each other's hand to very mixed results. They are about as uncoordinated as one another, and it takes them several tries to get it right once they stop being flustered and shy.
** Takeo messing up or completely destroying his clothes whenever he helps someone, earning the ire of his mom. This is invoked in-universe as a life-long problem with him.
* ShareTheMalePain: In TheStinger for episode 3, a young Takeo and Suna go to the park to play. Takeo climbs some monkey bars, then slips off. He unfortunately suffers a GroinAttack, which causes Suna to wince a little. Hilariously, Takeo gets right back up and doesn't seem to be in pain at all.
* ShipperOnDeck:
** Takeo attempts this with Suna and Yamato after seemingly picking up hints that his friend might actually have some interest in a girl for a change. But then Yamato confuses him with stuff she does, such as baking him sweets and wanting to meet him alone without Suna.
** Takeo and Yamato do this for Kurihara and Nanako in episode 17. However, it initially doesn't go very well, largely because Kurihara acts very immature around her.
** Takeo's parents approve of Yamato very much. When she comes to visit on Takeo's birthday, his mother makes it an explicit point of telling them that they would be out for approximately five hours and that Yamato could make herself at home. Yamato usually picks up on the intent faster than Takeo, if he does at all.
* ShoutOut:
** Part of the opening parodies ''Film/KingKong''.
** When trying to find out what type of girl Suna likes, Takeo asks him which members of Music/{{AKB48}} he finds hot. Then he asks if Suna likes [[Anime/MobileSuitGundam Sayla or Fraw Bow]].
** After his baby sister Maki is born, Takeo compares her spiky hair to a [[Franchise/DragonBall Saiyan's]].
** Yamato, half of an OddCouple pairing, goes to the [[Manga/LovelyComplex Koizumi]] Girls' Academy.
* SickeninglySweethearts:
** Takeo and Yamato can get like this from time to time, often prompting Suna to make a snarky comment or declare that it's time for him to
** Nanako mentions that not everyone is as lovey-dovey and head-over-heels in love as they are, however, when she starts dating Kurihara, they act ''even more'' lovey-dovey.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: Both Yamato and Ai falls for Takeo because of his kindness.
* SleepCute: Both Takeo and Yamato get to see the other sleeping in episode 10. Yamato even sneaks a kiss on the cheek to him while he's sleeping.
* SlumberPartyPloy: Invoked by Yamato's friends when they learn from Yamato's mother that she hadn't come home that night from her date with Takeo and make the obvious assumptions. They're correct in assuming they spent the night together, but aren't aware that Yamato and Takeo were legitimately stuck in the mountains until they ask Yamato for details.
* SmashingWatermelons: Done in episode 11 at the beach. Unfortunately Yamato nearly gets hit when she steps in front of the watermelon to gaze at Takeo. Fortunately they manage to stop him in time.
* {{Squee}}: Yamato does this on a regular basis when around Takeo, especially in episode 10 after they have to spend a night out in the wilderness. Her friends do this as well when they assume the two were doing naughty things night together.
* StealthHiBye: Suna at the end of episode 14 after he accidentally does a MomentKiller on Takeo and Yamato.
* TheStinger:
** Episode 3 reveals a little more about why Suna hangs out with Takeo, and finds his friend's NoSenseOfPersonalSpace habit to be a bit funny.
** At the end of episode 18, Takeo thanks Makoto for his help in that episode regarding the "small bug" that landed on his lips during his birthday with Yamato.
* TheStoic: Suna keeps his emotions closely guarded, even to his closest friend, Takeo. He generally makes it clear from his actions how deep they run (such as quietly waiting for his father all day at the hospital when his father needs heart surgery); he just doesn't express it through his words or his face.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Both of Takeo's parents are tall and powerfully built, and he clearly gets his features from both parents. His face more closely resembles his father, though it appears his prodigious strength from his mother. He also has a blend of his parents' personalities, with his father's simplicity and his mother's altruism.
* SupremeChef: Though she seems to only bake sweets, Yamato is good at it.
* SurpriseParty: At the beginning of episode 13, both Takeo and Yamato seem a bit too eager in having Suna join them in various activities such as watching a movie and mountain hiking. They then throw him a surprise party while on the mountainside.
* SustainedMisunderstanding: Takeo keeps interpreting many of Yamato's actions as her being interested in Suna, such as baking various sweets, with his friend acting like he always does towards all the girls. As a result, he believes she's interested in Suna, and tries to act as TheMatchmaker.
* TakenForGranite: Makoto in episode 18 when he's asked if he's kissed anyone before. He then recalls the incident from episode 6, [[spoiler:when Takeo forced him to do a "practice kiss" by puckering up and putting a sheet of plastic wrap in front of his face.]] Makoto is simply quiet and doesn't respond, and his sister says that he's never kissed anyone.
* TemptingFate: In episode 13, Yamato sounds excited about going to the MM amusement park, but then declines it when Takeo suggests they go together. They later discuss it with Ai and Suna, and Yamato mentions an urban legend that couples who go there together end up breaking up, and didn't want to take that risk. Hayato, a classmate of Ai's, suggests they all go together so that said curse wouldn't afflict them. [[spoiler:However, by the end of the episode, he tells Ai he'll give her some time alone with Takeo so she can tell him how she really feels about him, thereby unintentionally causing said urban legend to become a potential SelfFulfillingProphecy.]]
* TenderTears: Yamato does this from time to time.
* ThroughHisStomach: Yamato uses this as a way to get closer to Takeo.
* TrainingFromHell: PlayedForLaughs in episode 15, when Takeo chases after Saijou to return a handkerchief she dropped. However, from her point of view, he looked like an angry bear chasing after her, causing her to suddenly sprint much faster than normal. They then train this way for several scenes, with him running behind her and "chasing" her.
* TrueCompanions: Takeo and Suna are always there for each other, through thick and thin. Suna [[spoiler: convinces Takeo to confess his feelings for Yamato]], and Takeo is just as supportive, [[spoiler: choosing to be there for Suna when his dad is having a serious operation instead of spending the day with Yamato]].
* TwiceShy:
** Takeo and Yamato initially. Both liked each other, but Takeo assumed that Yamato was actually interested in Suna, while Yamato was suffering from CannotSpitItOut. Fortunately Suna fixes the problem for them in episode 3.
** Kurihara and Nanako. Both ask Takeo and Yamato respectively about the other person in episode 17. Though Takeo and Yamato attempt to do their best at being a ShipperOnDeck, it doesn't go so well largely due to Kurihara acting very buffoonish and immature.
* ATwinkleInTheSky: A boar suffers this fate in episode 10 after it charges at Yamato and Takeo. He grabs the beast, then tosses it high into the air.
* UniversalGroupReaction:
** After Takeo rescues two of Yamato's friends from a burning building, and then escapes by leaping from a third story window and landing [[MadeOfIron completely unharmed]], the girls, who had previously been mocking Takeo's appearance, find themselves swooning for him, and then find themselves all quickly and unanimously denying that idea.
** When the girls go shopping for swimsuits, Yamato flashes a few [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness rather out-of-character and risque bathing suits]] as potential ideas, and the others are all unanimously drawn as simplified outlines, and asking her if she's serious.
* UnspokenRetort: While Suna has no issue with actually snarking at Takeo, there are times where much of what he's thinking is shown as thought bubbles rather than spoken aloud, such as thinking "You're too close" on a few occasions.
* WhatDoesSheSeeInHim:
** Yamato's friends were initially shocked when they first saw Takeo and wondered how she could fall for someone that isn't conventionally attractive and can be somewhat intimidating at first glance. Their opinions changed quickly after witnessing his heroic feats first-hand though.
** Ai is this way as well initially, wondering why any girl aside from her would be interested in Takeo.
* WhatTheHellHero: Mostly PlayedForLaughs and used by both Suna and Takeo on each other in episode 3:
** When spending some time alone with Yamato, Takeo starts trying to recommend his friend to her again. She cries, then runs off, causing him to think Suna did something mean to her.
** Suna, getting a little tired of Takeo's ObliviousToLove mentality, spills the beans on who Yamato really likes. Despite all the evidence clearly pointing to him, Takeo still thinks Yamato likes Suna. [[spoiler:Fortunately for Suna, Yamato comes over and essentially gives a LoveConfession to Takeo, who finally realizes it after hearing her say it directly.]]
** In episode 17, Nanako, one of Yamato's friends, gets mad at her and Takeo's attempts to get her closer to Kurihara. The latter meanwhile repeatedly blows his chances with her by saying ridiculous things to her throughout the group outing, causing Nanako to leave in frustration.
* WhenSheSmiles: Inverted variation with Suna. Girls gossip amongst themselves that he must only laugh around a girl he really likes. But he always laughs at Takeo's actions, such as being scolded by the police for his menacing presence at an elementary school to thwart a supposed pedophile in the area. Takeo even [[LampshadeHanging lampshades]] this in the first episode, telling girls this is what he looks like when laughing.
* WoundedGazelleGambit: The molester attempts to tell the cop that Takeo nearly broke his arm for no reason. But then his story starts to fall apart, with Yamato confirms to the policeman that the man was a molester, and that Takeo saved her.
* {{Yandere}}: Yamato has [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/koa2bge.jpg that look]] briefly in episode 15 shortly after Saijou gives Takeo a towel to thank him for his help in the relay race. And probably wanted to give him a LoveConfession there had he not of been meeting up with Yamato at that time. Said look is still in her face even after Yamato gives him the cellphone strap.
* YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre:
** Ai does this towards Yamato after the latter reveals the "dirty secrets" she had about Takeo, such as [[spoiler:wanting to hold hands with him after he said he wouldn't lay a finger on her until they were older.]] Considering the former also has feelings for Takeo, it took a lot of effort on her part to do this, [[spoiler:though she does break down and cry shortly after Yamato leaves to see Takeo.]]
** Takeo does this to Kurihara in episode 17 after Nanako gets angry and leaves the karaoke bar.
** Takeo is considerably less obnoxious than what people think, making them realize with time that the guy's a sweetheart. A great hurdle for Takeo is to finally realize that he is indeed a person worthy of love and care, and not just an excuse for girls to get close to Suna through him.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: Takeo is frequently mistaken by passerby to be a strapping adult involved in some variety of strenuous career (like Olympic deadlifter). He's only 16.
