There's evidence that goes back quite a ways, but it has only come to light in the last few decades, with the Catholic church losing much of the power they once wielded over Western civilization and forensics and the internet making it easier to gather evidence and document sex crimes.

In fact, there is speculation that cases of Pedophilia in Protestant Churches may outnumber those in the Catholic Church (it's speculated that the reason Catholic priests are more likely to get prosecuted is that the Church tends to be better at record-keeping.
