* The town of Marietta, Ohio is known as the first settlement founded by American pioneers outside the original 13 states, founded in 1788. Some settlements already existed in Kentucky and Tennessee by then, but they were parts of Virginia and North Carolina at that time, so they don't count. Vermont, Maine and West Virginia had yet to break off of their original states too, but they're east of the Appalachians (or, in the case of West Virginia, ''in'' the Appalachians) and so don't count either. Even then, the Northwest Territory was still inhabited by Native Americans, English fur traders who retained their citizenship after American independence, and settlers from the former New France, so Marietta can only be the first pioneer city if one discounts everything else.

Another Overly Narrow Superlative is such a big deal that it rather cancels the over-narrowness, though. ENIAC was the first computer known to be [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turing_complete Turing Complete]] ''during its operational life''. (The Z3 ''was'' Turing Complete, but this was only demonstrated in 1998, using programming techniques not available in its time. The Mark I (appeared after the Z3 and before the ENIAC) was also Turing Complete, proven in 1998. The Zuse Z4 from 1945 was not Turing Complete right from the start -- the conditional jump instruction was added after 1945 (possibly in 1950). Coincidentally, the ENIAC also lacked a conditional jump instruction at first and was not Turing Complete, until it was "hacked" to allow for some sort of conditional execution.[[note]]Back in these days, few people cared about whether a computer was Turing Complete or not. Usually, the problems the computers had to solve did not require Turing Completeness.[[/note]]
