It's not a courtesy as when the guards arrive to drag him off, they tell him there's [[HypocriticalHumor no smoking in the incineration chamber]] and order him to hand over his stash. He jabs the lit cigarette into the guard and tries to escape instead.

They never taught me ''that'' in the Obsidian Order."

** Naturally, ''Series/KikaiSentaiZenkaiger'', in its shot-for-shot parody of the infamous ''Jetman'' ending, caps it off by having the MonsterOfTheWeek in it's standard size form playing Gai's role do this with a rose instead of a real cigarette, with the exact same pose the real Gai did when he died. * In the 1982 Australian/Taiwanese movie ''Folder/AttackForceZ'', a member of a UsefulNotes/WorldWarII commando force is wounded while landing on a Japanese-occupied island. After exchanging overly casual banter and a cigarette the commander shoots him, so he won't be captured and give away the mission under torture.
