If a female character's voice is noticeably lower than those of other women in the work, it's a sure sign that she either is a lot more dangerous or more masculine than the other girls. As such, contralto voices are usually reserved for tough Action Girls, Tomboys, Lad-ettes, Ladies of War, Bifauxnen, Femme Fatales, and even young boys.

Some female characters, in the meantime, may go from a higher-pitched voice to a menacing contralto when they're about to kick someone's ass, or during changes of their persona when the character gets serious. A common reason for a change in persona is for the character to tap into some mystical power. Being taken over by her SuperPoweredEvilSide could be another reason for this since EvilSoundsDeep. Or maybe she just gets in the zone during LetsGetDangerous moments and the deep voice is reflecting that.

Compare BaritoneOfStrength. Contrast ChildLikeVoice, where men and women alike have very high, cutesy voices. May overlap with AltoVillainess and EvilSoundsDeep. May also have a TomboyishVoice.
----
!!Examples:

* Literature/AccelWorld: The anime has Yuniko (AKA Scarlet Rain) put up an act with high pitched voice to seem cute so she can get closer to Haruyuki, but when she drops that facade her normal speaking tone is much more deep, gruff, and angry to emphasize her LittleMissBadass and CuteAndPsycho character traits.
* Revy, Roberta and Balalaika of Manga/BlackLagoon, the three scariest and most badass women in the entire series, all speak with a contralto.
* Miu of Manga/BlendS already is the female character with the deepest and most mature voice, but her voice gets even deeper when her imagination gets really wild and somewhat unsettling.
* Anime/BurstAngel: Jo is a tough ActionGirl, and a accomplished GunSlinger mecha pilot, and have the deep voice to match.
* In Anime/Charlotte, Yusa's HotBlooded Tomboy sister Misa speaks with a noticeably lower voice than she does. She doesn't get to act on it terribly often, but Misa is also quite willing to jump to more violent solutions if she finds it necessary (she throws threats around with her fire powers occasionally).
* Most members of the eponymous AmazonBrigade in Manga/Claymore have low, contralto voices, even though women with higher registers ought not be trifled with either.
* Anime/CodeGeass: Among the Brittanian Princesses shown, Cornelia has the deepest voice. She also is the one who fights in a mecha suit and conquers nations among them.
* Manga/ElfenLied: Whenever the protagonist is in her Nyu persona, she is like an innocent young girl. When she switches to her Lucy persona, she has a much lower voice to match her dangerous and threatening nature.
* Manga/FairyTail: Erza Scarlet has this. She may be as eccentric as everyone else in the titular guild, but when she gets serious, everyone falls into line, or else. This includes powerhouses like Natsu and Gray.
* Manga/FullmetalAlchemist:
** While Envy is technically genderless, both of their voice actors are female, and use a remarkably low-pitched and guttural growl that's fairly low even for a male.
** Lust is the only clearly female Homunculi, and has an extremely low and seductive voice to match.
* Manga/FutureDiarys Uryuu Minene has a very low voice range among the females, Japanese or English dub. Inverted with Japanese!Yandere Yuno.
* Franchise/GhostInTheShell: Major Motoko Kusanagi is typically voiced as a contralto and is hands-down the biggest, baddest ass-kicker (cyber or real world) in Section 9.
* Literature/HighSchoolDXD:
** Xenovia's normal voice, which is deeper than any other female in the series and fitting for her role as the Big Girl of the main cast. Made even more evident when she practiced "how to be a normal teenage girl":
-->Xenovia: (voice several pitches higher than her usual coarse-and-masculine voice) Let's get along, 'kay, Issei-kun!\\
Issei: That cutesey voice does NOT suit you!\\
Xenovia: (switches straight back to her normal-unfeminine voice) I know, I tried to copy Irina, and it was SO difficult.
** In the dub, however, Xenovia doesn't even TRY to sound like a normal teenage girl in that scene:
--> Xenovia: (barely any different in inflection/volume) It looks like we get to work together, Issei.\\
Issei: Don't try to sound cute while making that face!\\
Xenovia: My goal was to mimic Irina, but Understatement I guess I just didn't quite get it right.
* VisualNovel/HigurashiWhenTheyCry: Whenever Rika lets her true mental age break through her cutesy facade, she gets this. It's played for mystery and fear.
* Anime/KillLaKill:
** EvilMatriarch Ragyo Kiryuin and her daughter, Satsuki Kiryuin have noticeably prominent deep voices compared to the rest of the women in the cast. This is especially evident when they exercise their authority over others, although they have their share of action as well.
** Ryuko Matoi has a very noticeable growl in her voice and is the only good ActionGirl in the series. [[spoiler:At least until episode 17, when Satsuki and the EliteFour turn out to be GoodAllAlong.]]
** Inverted with Nui Harime, who has a high pitched and cute sounding voice, which ends up being played for danger, and fear instead by contrasting Satsuki (some have even described her voice as "sickly sweet"). She's also highly competent in battle despite not having ClothesMakeTheSuperman applied to her like other characters. [[spoiler: Though being a Life-Fiber Construct, she doesn't need special clothing...]]
* Manga/KillMeBaby: Sonya has a far deeper voice than anyone else in the show. She’s a trained assassin.
* Manga/LuckyStar: Akira Kogami pretends to be a cheerful girl with a high-pitched voice for the camera, but as soon as something angers her, she reverts to her borderline psychotic, abusive real self with a husky contralto. This is implied to be the result of several years of smoking, due to the crushing pressure and anxiety of being a child star; at one point she throws a used ashtray at Shiraishi's head.
* Franchise/LyricalNanoha:
** Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanoha: Presea Testarossa had already a low voice even before she became crazy and evil.
** Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs: The LadyOfWar Signum (voiced by Creator/KaoriShimizu) has a very low and powerful voice for such a slender woman and is unarguably the best fighter in that season and in many later Franchise/LyricalNanoha installments. TheAbridgedSeries even calls her "the manliest character on this show" (and that despite her very feminine forms) and exaggerates her voice to an outright male baritone.
** Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers: Uno, Tre, Otto and Nove have also low voices, especially Tre, who is acknowledged the best fighter among her sisters and goes toe-to-toe with Fate herself. Cinque's voice is also semi-low, and very at odds with her physical appearance.
* Ozen the Immovable in Manga/MadeInAbyss not only has a really low voice to begin with, she makes it even lower when being threatening.
* Literature/TheMisfitOfDemonKingAcademy: Emilia Lud(o)well has the lowest voice out of the female cast, possessing a deep, sophisticated tone that showcases her prideful and snobbish nature, and turns especially unhinged when she attacks Izabella and Anos's fanclub. Her reincarnated form, being younger, averts this and has a way high pitched voiced.
* Rachnera in Manga/MonsterMusume has the deepest voice of all the girls. She is the most monstrous of Kimihito's roommates, being a gigantic spider, and delights in tormenting others and tying them up in her webs bondage style.
* Temari from Manga/Naruto is one of the few Action Girls with a competent record voiced by Creator/RomiPark.
* Setsuna Sakurazaki in Manga/NegimaMagisterNegiMagi has a very low and powerful voice for such a slender and petite woman and is unarguably among the best fighters in the series. This also extends to the fact that Bifauxnen she can pass for a male.
* The 16th Pokemon movie, Anime/PokemonGenesectAndTheLegendAwakened, features a female-voiced Mewtwo, whose serious, commanding voice harks back to her counterpart from the first movie and its sequel.
* VideoGame/PriPara:
** Shion has the deepest voice out of the six main characters, fitting for her HotBlooded TheAce status.
** Love Tochiotome has a low voice and is physically strong and a passionate tennis player.
* Kyoko Sakura from Franchise/PuellaMagiMadokaMagica has quite a low voice. The third Drama CD, Farewell Story, revealed that her voice used to be much higher, until [[spoiler:her father went crazy upon learning the truth about the increased attendance of his church being a result of his daughter's mahou shoujo powers and went PaterFamilicide upon everyone in the family, killing everyone except Kyoko (who was the only survivor because of said mahou shoujo powers).]]
** Homura also speaks in a fairly low and stoic voice. .
* Anime/QueenEmeraldas, the DistaffCounterpart of Anime/CaptainHarlock and probably the second most badass being in the Anime/Leijiverse, also had the lowest-pitched voice among notable female characters in every one of her many incarnations.
* While Moka Akashiya of Manga/RosarioPlusVampire fame is normally a GenkiGirl who talks in a higher pitched voice, when her rosary is removed and Inner Moka is let loose, her deeper, more guttural tone is just one indication that the S-class monster is released and someone is about to "learn their place".
* Manga/SailorMoon has Sailor Uranus, a Sailor Senshi who battles in a more brutal fashion. In her civilian identity of Haruka Tenoh, she was often mistaken for a boy due to both this and how she would dress.
* In the anime adaptation of Manga/TalentlessNana, Nana speaks in a sweet, chipper, and youthful tone when speaking to others.
* When in serious mode, Anime/TenchiMuyo's Mihoshi's Creator/YukoMizutani voice goes from sounding like WesternAnimation/MinnieMouse to raspy and hulking.
* Manga/TokyoGhoul primarily inverts this, in a very subtle way. While ActionGirl Touka tends to use a rougher, lower voice, most of the truly dangerous women in the series have high-pitched and girlish voices. [[spoiler: As part of her role as the FakeCutie, Roma speaks in a high-pitched and squeaky voice while BigBad Eto speaks in a girlish, playful voice that adds to her childlike disguise]].
* Franchise/YuGiOh:
** Mai is the CoolBigSis archetype with a deeper voice to reflect this. Her dueling skills are respectable enough to help her qualify for the finals in tournaments.
** Aki Izayoi from Anime/YuGiOh5Ds has a rather deep voice for a Yu-Gi-Oh! heroine. She is also a DarkActionGirl and a psychotic psychic in the first two seasons, and even as a child, her voice was noticeably low, especially when she discovered her psychic power. However, since the third season, when has become a genuine ActionGirl, her voice doesn't drop lower like in the previous seasons when she is about to kick ass.
** Carly's voice becomes much lower after becoming an AxCrazy Dark Signer.
** Misty, who is also a Dark Signer, has a low and mature voice even in her normal appearance. However, she is not really AxCrazy, but her calm, low voice reflects her TranquilFury character.
** Both Carly and Misty get even lower voices and VoiceOfTheLegion when the Earthbound Immortals take control of them, which happens when they try to redeem themselves.
** Sherry [=LeBlanc=] is a BikerBadass and a very skilled duelist who can rival even Yusei. .

* ComicBook/XFactor2006: Hela's voice is described as low and throaty by Jamie.

* Fanfic/BaitAndSwitchSTO: When not the viewpoint character, Captain Kanril Eleya is usually described as having a rough contralto voice (the author always casts her as Creator/JenniferHale). She's a Ladette who trained in the Bajoran Militia and is as deadly with small arms and knives as with a battleship's phaser bank.
* Fanfic/TheGoodHunter: Ursula, Captain of the 4th Company is a BloodKnight who speaks in a silky contralto.
* Since she was a king prior to the story, it should be no surprise that Arturia Pendragon has one in Fanfic/AKnightsTaleAsInquisitor. Her voice, as heard by other characters, is strongly firm and sovereign, being naturally full of authority due to many years of ruling.
* Fanfic/PokemonResetBloodlines: Belladonna Tyrian is noted to speak with a rather deep voice, and fits the "danger" part to a T, given that she's absolutely ruthless towards those who hurt her loved ones.

* WesternAnimation/AtlantisTheLostEmpire: Helga Sinclair, the lieutenant of the expedition to Atlantis, has a deep, sultry voice, and is certainly not afraid to get her hands dirty.
* WesternAnimation/Encanto: Luisa, the Madrigal granddaughter blessed with SuperStrength and muscle to match, has a deep, throaty voice--noticeably lower than the voices of all the other female characters in the film.
* Megara from WesternAnimation/Hercules has a sultry, husky voice, atypical of both Creator/Disney female Love Interests in general and female characters in the movie. She's also working for Hades (albeit unwillingly), and at one point tries to seduce Herc into revealing his weaknesses, though she just ends up falling for him instead.
* In WesternAnimation/TheJungleBook2, Shanti sometimes has a slightly deeper voice than before, atypical of Disney female Love Interests in general, mostly being a soprano.
* Played straight by Adagio Dazzle and Aria Blaze, the villains of WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyEquestriaGirlsRainbowRocks, but averted by Sonata Dusk, who has an airheaded ValleyGirl-type voice.
* The antagonist of WesternAnimation/RugratsGoWild is a baby-eating leopard named Siri. She is voiced by Music/Pretenders front woman Chrissie Hynde, who is known for her distinct contralto range. Siri even gets a VillainSong, "Big Bad Cat", performed in that low voice.
* The tough-as-nails SpaceMarine Sergeant Calhoun from WesternAnimation/WreckItRalph has the lowest female voice (she is voiced by Creator/JaneLynch) and is by far the most overtly badass character in the movie.

* In Film/TheDarkKnightRises, Selina Kyle initially plays the part of a flustered maid to Alfred, the other servants, and Bruce Wayne. It's only after Wayne almost instantly figures out that she's there for more than just work that her voice drops a bit.
-->Catwoman: Oops.
* In Film/TheForceAwakens, Rey has this trait, and can certainly take care of herself in a rather dangerous galaxy.
* Film/FrightNight. voice is much much deeper (and openly seductive) than her normal squeaky teen voice.
-->: What's the matter, Charley? Don't you want me anymore?
* In Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy2014 and later Franchise/MarvelCinematicUniverse movies, Nebula has a very low, growly voice, and speaks in an almost constantly threatening tone. Creator/KarenGillan said the voice is "an impression of Creator/MarilynMonroe and Creator/ClintEastwood", with the former being what director Creator/JamesGunn asked her to do.
* Gogo Yubari's introduction in Film/KillBill has her wearing a stereotypical Japanese schoolgirl uniform and speaking in a stereotypical high-pitched voice. Then Creator/ChiakiKuriyama drops the smile, drops the business end of a spiked meteor hammer to the floor, and drops her voice an octave or two. Beatrix Kiddo knows she has a real fight on her hands.
* In Film/TheLeagueOfExtraordinaryGentlemen, Mina Harker's normal voice isn't exactly high-pitched (she even does an Alan Quartermaine impersonation at one point), but it really dips down when she says, "Save your bullets, these men are mine!" right before turning vampirey and attacking the mooks going after them.
* Film/ReturnToOz: The villainess Mombi is deep-voiced, especially when she drawls "Dorothy Gale!!!!".

* In Literature/TheBelgariad, Polgara the Sorceress is described as having a deep, rich voice to go with her legendary reputation as three-thousand-year-old guardian of the Rivan Kings and, by extension, the Western lands.
* Inquisitor Amberley Vail, from the Literature/CiaphasCain series, has a rich contralto singing voice and is just as good at causing death and destruction as Cain is.
* Literature/1995 by Creator/MarthaWells: Elen has a deep voice for a woman and is a well-connected, high-class MagicKnight.
* Literature/TheHanSoloTrilogy: Bria is described as having a surprisingly low tone to her voice, sounding husky when singing once. She ends up being a crack Rebel commando and spy (she's undercover as a lounge singer when she sings).
* In Literature/HarryPotterAndTheOrderOfThePhoenix Amelia Bones' voice is described as "booming" and in between Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince she gave Death Eaters a hard time and .
* Darwi Odrade from Literature/HereticsOfDune is described as having a "soft contralto" voice. She is a Bene Gesserit, so the badass part goes without saying.
* Descriptions of Admiral Michelle "Mike" Henke in the Honorverse frequently include her 'husky' contralto voice. While she is neither a FemmeFatale nor a classic ActionGirl, she is an extremely dangerous commander with a devious mind, and a full-fledged FourStarBadass (and member of the royal family) to boot.
* Galadriel from Literature/TheLordOfTheRings, a character often described by lesser mortals as incomprehensible and dangerous (which isn't surprising considering she hails from an age when her kin were the main source of trouble in the Middle Earth), speaks in a deep contralto in the book. In the movie she's played by actress Creator/CateBlanchett, who isn't exactly squeaky-voiced either.
* Literature/HowARealistHeroRebuiltTheKingdom: Amidonian General Margarita Wonder, taken prisoner by Souma's forces following the Battle of Van, asks to sing on one of his variety shows when she hears he'll be recording one from the occupied Castle Van. She proceeds to dazzle with a "husky" rendition of Amidonia's national anthem, and then defiantly tells him to take her head for it as she expected (he declines, citing his belief in freedom of expression). She goes on to be host on an Series/AmericanIdol-like talent show.

* Yo-Yo Rodriguez on Series/AgentsOfSHIELD is a HotBlooded, ass-kicking badass with SuperSpeed, and she has the deepest voice of all the female cast.
* Downplayed in Series/BetterCallSaul. Creator/RheaSeehorn is notable for her very deep voice, easily trumping most of the male cast. However, she is not physically strong or trained in combat, rather having a strong personality.
* Bernadette from Series/TheBigBangTheory usually has an adorably squeaky voice... until she gets pissed off. Then her voice drops low and the other characters know she means business.
* Rosa Diaz on Series/BrooklynNineNine, resident BadassBiker. Her actress, Creator/StephanieBeatriz, actively pitches her voice lower, and the few times that Rosa has spoken closer to Beatriz's normal register tend to OOCIsSeriousBusiness terrify her fellow detectives.
* Series/CobraKai: Tory is by far the most aggressive, skilled, and intimidating of the female fighters in the series, and has a proportionally deeper voice.
* Shirley from Series/Community normally speaks in a high-pitched voice to try and show she's friendly but her voice drops at least an octave when she drops the façade.
* Funnily enough, while Creator/JessicaAlba does not qualify for this trope, her dubbing actress in the French dub of Series/DarkAngel has quite a deep voice befitting Max's ActionGirl status. It does not work that well with later roles of Alba though.
* In Series/TheDropout Before Elizabeth goes out to make presentations to venture capitalists, Sunny advises her against using her "giddy voice". Afterwards, Elizabeth makes a deliberate switch from her regular voice to one that's deeper, to project more power and authority. She tests out her new voice when Don Lucas calls her to tell her that Avie resigned. He asks her if she has a cold after he hears her raspier voice. This is also mentioned under the Real Life section.
* Series/GameOfThrones: Yara Greyjoy's voice is deep and quite raspy, basically making her a female GutturalGrowler.
* Sue Sylvester from Series/Glee portrayed by the deep-voiced Creator/JaneLynch, which adds to her dry sarcasm and her FloweryInsults. Her lackeys, particularly Santana and Quinn, also have deep voices and shows their power over others because they're popular cheerleaders.
* Series/IClaudius averts this with Messalina. She has a high, feminine voice, while being a rather villainous character.
* Series/TheLWord: Shane, the most masculine of the main lesbians, has a low and husky voice.
* Series/MrRobot: Dom's mother tries setting her up with their neighbor Janice, a quirky taxidermist played by Southern contralto actress Creator/AshlieAtkinson. The three of them have a pleasant-if-awkward dinner, but when she and Dom are alone she reveals herself as Dom's Dark Army handler and makes a graphic threat against her mother.
* Jane Rizzoli from Series/RizzoliAndIsles played by Creator/AngieHarmon is an example of this. Her voice is much deeper than her costar's Maura Isles (Creator/SashaAlexander). It is also notable that her voice gets lower and raspier than when she is upset or angered.
* In Series/XenaWarriorPrincess, Xena's voice is much deeper than Gabrielle's, since between the two, Xena is a seasoned fighter, while Gabby is a bard.

* Brittney Slayes of Music/UnleashTheArchers is a mezzo soprano and sings HeavyMithril in what is usually a fairly low pitch range for the female PowerMetal vocalists.

* Wrestling/NatalyaNeidhart has a pretty deep voice for a woman and is definitely an ass-kicker.
* Wrestling/BeckyLynch has a voice lower than most men.

* In Theatre/Hadestown, the contralto Fate, Atropos (originally played by Jewelle Blackman), adds a beautifully menacing quality to the Fates' harmonies as they embody the tragic circumstances that drive characters to their doom, such as the howling wind, as well as those characters' own TragicFlaw.

* Zigzagged in VideoGame/AkatsukiBlitzkampf. Mycale plays it more or less straight as she's a pseudo-MagicalGirl whose voice is deeper than her child-like looks would make one expect, but the DarkActionGirl Marilyn Sue completely averts it with her high-pitched and almost shrill voice. In the meantime Kanae has a rather mature voice but sounds more squeaky when she gets hit, Perfecti borders on an antagonistic version of CuteButCacophonic, and the softspoken Anonym manages to reach a happy medium of sorts.
* Franchise/BlazBlues got several examples:
** Throughout the series, Noel is a generally harmless girl, though a competent combatant (mostly thanks to her weapon, the Bolverk), with a high and girly voice. When she's forced into the form of Mu-12, which harnesses the power of Kusanagi, the Godslayer, her voice plummets several octaves. Crosses over with EvilSoundsDeep, and even once she gains conscious control of the transformation and joins the heroes again, using her Murakumo form still causes a noticeable difference in tone.
** Bullet's voice is the deepest of the female cast and she's pretty aggressive and pushy to boot.
** Kokonoe's voice is rather low in comparison to other characters, and she's pretty aggressive on top of owning a large vault of nukes.
* Eileen the Crow in VideoGame/Bloodborne has a deep, smooth Yorkshire-accented voice, fitting for a middle-aged enhanced beast-slayer and Hunter of Hunters.In the English dub, anyway. Her Japanese VA obviously lacks the accent, but her voice is still appropriately husky.
* Ilona, in VideoGame/CallOfDutyAdvancedWarfare, has a thick, low Russian accent, and is the only ActionGirl in the main cast.
* VideoGame/Destiny2: Empress Caiatl speaks in a low, hoarse register befitting her massive size and imperious presence, low enough that the Japanese dub simply gives her a male voice actor outright.
* VideoGame/DiabloIII: Creator/JenniferHale does it again, this time with nightmarish effect, when .
* Morrigan has a noticeably deeper voice than the other two female party members in VideoGame/DragonAgeOrigins. She's also the one who's the most offense-oriented by default, as she starts out with only damage-dealing and debuff spells.
** First Enchanter Vivienne has quite the silky voice to go with the leader of a kingdom's mages and power in the court.
** Cassandra is one of your party's warriors, and as a Seeker of the Chantry has the voice to intimidate those she wishes.
** If you so choose, you can give your female Inquisitor this voice by choosing the American voice (Creator/SumaleeMontano).
* VideoGame/DragonQuestXI: Jade is one of the strongest fighters in the party, and has a much deeper voice than WhiteMagicianGirl Serena, despite only being a few years older.
* Franchise/FireEmblem:
** VideoGame/FireEmblemAwakening:
*** Lucina comes from a ZombieApocalypse future with a voice deep enough to pass off for a man She also subverts it in a LighterAndSofter Drama CD, where Creator/YuuKobayashi gives her a more girlish and high-pitched tone.
*** Out of 's prospect mothers, Sully (voiced by Momoko Oohara and Creator/AmandaCelineMiller) and a Female Avatar have fairly deep voices and are quite accomplished Action Girls.
*** Panne, who's voiced by Creator/YukiMasuda and Creator/JessicaGeeGeorge, is a Proud Warrior Race Lady with quite the deep pitch.
** VideoGame/FireEmblemFates has Effie, who, being a hugely strong big-eating LovableJock, has a very deep voice to go with her in the English version, though her voice is actually rather high in the Japanese audio.
** VideoGame/FireEmblemThreeHouses has Ingrid and Catherine, who are more than capable physical fighters, with some of the deeper voices amongst the female cast, especially Catherine.
** VideoGame/FireEmblemEngage zigzags this trope with Yunaka. Yunaka has an extremely upbeat and quirky personality. She immediately acts friendly with everyone she meets and constantly dishes out lame puns. As you might expect she speaks in a very high-pitched voice... except for when she lands a critical hit. Her voice suddenly lowers as she cooly taunts her enemies about how she's about to kill them... and then her voice goes right back to how it used to be. It's immediately apparent that her regular persona is largely an act. In spite of that though, she's really not a bad person as .
* Ballora, the ballerina animatronic in VideoGame/FiveNightsAtFreddysSisterLocation, has a low and soothing but ominous voice, which she puts to good use by softly singing in the distance while she stalks you and directly asking you if you're sneaking around her room. She's also one of the most dangerous of the animatronics in the game.
* Yuna in VideoGame/GhostOfTsushima has a husky contralto, courtesy of Creator/SumaleeMontano, which matches her character as a badass thief and ActionGirl.
* VideoGame/GuiltyGears Baiken speaks in this tone, indicative of how violent and aggressive she is, and also alluding to the fact that she is based off Kenshin Himura, whose seiyuu, the aforementioned Mayo Suzukaze, also spoke in a contralto for him. Justice also speaks in this tone, as befits the leader of the Gears.
* Megaera in VideoGame/Hades talks with a deep, raspy voice. She also talks barely above a whisper to show how in control she is.
* Franchise/Halo:
** Commander Sarah Palmer, introduced in VideoGame/Halo4 and voiced by Creator/JenniferHale, sports a deep tone whenever she talks on-screen, and is a FourStarBadass through and through.
** Mahkee 'Chava, a female Sangheili introduced in VideoGame/Halo5Guardians, speaks with a deep voice. It fits with the portrayal of the male Sangheili, who all have baritone voices themselves.
* The Empress from VideoGame/AHatInTime is definitely deeper in tone than any other female in the game, and she's definitely intimidating enough to rock the voice.
* Due to the nature of how the female characters are portrayed, most female champions in VideoGame/LeagueOfLegends sports this. This is especially true with any champion voiced by Creator/KarenStrassman Cassiopeia, Shyvana, Fiora, Zyra, Elise, where said champion will sport a deep voice, especially with Fiora, who sports a a French accent. Just to make the list shorter, here are the female champions that doesn't sport a deep voice: Lulu, TristanaJustified, both are yordles, AnnieA young 10 year old girl, LuxA young teenager who supposed to play homage to the MagicalGirl character archetype, and Jinx An AxCrazy terrorist psychopath who has a mentality of a child.
* Franchise/MassEffect:
** The female Commander Shepard, voiced by Creator/JenniferHale, speaks in a rough, smoky contralto and, since the games lean on PurelyAestheticGender, she's just as terrifying a combatant as the male version. A renegade Femshep sounds a half octave lower, especially when she is snarking or threatening to kill people.
** In VideoGame/MassEffect3, the female krogan "Eve", voiced by Creator/LaniMinella, has an unusually deep voice, not unlike the males of her race. Even the male krogan actors tend to have digital filters to sound deeper and gruffer, but Eve's actor matches them without one. She's also more than capable of not only holding her own, but rallying violent and hot-tempered krogan men to her cause.
** VideoGame/MassEffectAndromeda:
*** Your squadmate Cora Harper (voiced by Creator/JulesDeJongh) has a voice pitched similarly to [=FemShep=]. She's an abnormally strong human biotic who was trained by asari commandos and favors a shotgun, and her unique Shield Boost power is considered a GameBreaker.
*** Nakmor Morda, the leader of the krogan colony New Tuchanka, has similar voice acting to Eve, and demonstrates when a male challenges her at the end of Elaadan's main quest just how she got to be the chieftain in a culture that firmly believes in AsskickingLeadsToLeadership.
* VideoGame/MetroidPrime: When she's not a HeroicMime, Samus has a notably low voice (surprise surprise, she's also voiced by Creator/JenniferHale). Other games (notably VideoGame/SuperSmashBros) use different voice actresses, but keep the badass contralto.
* Likewise, Natsume from VideoGame/NinjaMastersHaoNinpoCho is a very violent and aggressive female fighter with a voice that's deeper than usual for Japanese women in video games.
* VideoGame/Onmyoji2016: Even though Tamamo no Mae is a guy, his voice is provided by Creator/RomiPark. He sounds as seductive and badass as you can imagine, but also pretty feminine, making even the players mistake his gender.
* VideoGame/Overwatch:
** Zarya, being a 195cm (6'5") tall bodybuilder and soldier known as The World's Strongest Woman, unsurprisingly sports the deepest voice of the game's female cast, complementing her thick Russian accent.
** Moira, a MadScientist whose strongest emotion at any given time seems to be cool disdain, has a low contralto voice. Coupled with some of her voice lines, "Stupidity is not a right." Moira definitely falls into the colder side of this trope.
* VideoGame/Paladins:
** Ash is a tanky, close range bruiser and BloodKnight with a very raspy, deep voice that makes her sound very threatening.
** Seris is a dark and mysterious seer who has the deepest voice of the female champions with a reverb that emphasizes how eerie she is.
* VideoGame/PlanescapeTorment continues the Creator/JenniferHale marathon with her contributing the voice of Fall-From-Grace. Grace is a demonic seductress who was captured by the insanely tyrannical devils, tortured, survived, bested them in a contest, won her freedom, redeemed herself, and is now a non-evil priestess of a sect following Epicurean beliefs. She runs a brothel where you can pay incredibly intelligent beautiful women to be nerdy with you and accompanies an amnesiac immortal on a dimension-hopping adventure, battling twisted angels, literal legions of devils, nightmarish shadows made from snuffed lives, an insane immortal witch, and many more with nothing but her spells, her kiss, and her bare hands. It's even more awesome than it sounds.
* VideoGame/Portal: What signals [=GLaDOS=]'s turn from seemingly bumbling evil to a new level of LetsGetDangerous is when her voice deepens after Chell
* VideoGame/PrincessMaker2:
** The major part of the female combatants avert the trope, but the tough and no-nonsense Natasha Dripsikova plays it completely straight. Her deep voice goes quite well with her stripperiffic looks and how she fights with a mace.
** This is completely averted by Anita Cassandra, a CuteBruiser who doubles as the Daughter's Fighting Rival. Her voice has a very girly and high pitch, though to be fair, she's just 14 when she issues her challenge.
* A different take on this trope where Maria is given a seductive, deep voice provided by Creator/MaryElizabethMcGlynn in the re-casting of VideoGame/SilentHill2. Considering that she's
* VideoGame/Skullgirlss Painwheel, voiced by Creator/DanielleMcRae, has an intensely deep GutturalGrowler voice: quite fitting for an angry science experiment with a major bone to pick.
* Ivy Valentine of the VideoGame/SoulSeries speaks with a booming, commandingly deep cut-glass RP accent, which suits her character as one of the more mature and intimidating women in the series.
* In Franchise/Splatoon, the female Octoling's voice is noticeably lower than the female Inkling's iconic high-pitched voice to better fit the more serious demeanor of Octolings.
* The female Sith Warrior of VideoGame/StarWarsTheOldRepublic has the deepest voice of any female PC, courtesy of Natasha Little. Female or male, the Warrior is a force to be reckoned with (pun intended).
* In VideoGame/TalesOfBerseria, Creator/CristinaValenzuela starts off by giving Velvet Crowe a high-pitched girly voice reminiscent of Marinette Dupain-Cheng. After her brother is killed, her village is wiped out, and she is tossed in a hole in the ground for three years with nothing to subsist on save daemons, her voice drops about three octaves to symbolize her new attitude. Her original Japanese voice actress, Creator/RinaSato, goes through a similar portrayal for the character, going with a cutesy, higher voice for the Velvet of the prologue before adopting a deeper and more intimidating performance for the vindictive and ruthless Velvet of the rest of the game.
** In the same game, the English version of Teresa Linares, dubbed by Creator/BrinaPalencia, has a voice which is noticeably deeper and more matured compared to in the Japanese version.
* VideoGame/TrailsOfColdSteel I: Laura is a strong fighter, using a two-handed sword. She also has a deeper voice than one might expect for a 17-18 year old girl, and has a deeper voice than Instructor Sara, who is an adult woman.
* VideoGame/VsCassandra: During the song “Possession”, Cassandra sings in a noticeably lower octave than her other two songs, where she has a higher singing voice.
* In VideoGame/TheWalkingDeadTelltale, Clementine's voice deepens significantly between childhood and adolescence, the change being especially noticeable in Season 3. As for the "danger" part, Clem's badass cred really speaks for itself.

* Franchise/AceAttorney: Any time Franziska von Karma is fully voiced, she has a rather deep voice. Also, Elise Deauxnim in case 3-5 uses the lower-pitched voice blips normally used for male characters (except in the Trilogy HD release for iOS), indicating that she has a deep voice, and .
* VisualNovel/DanganronpaTriggerHappyHavoc: Sakura Ogami is a teenage girl with the built of a body-builder, the fighting skills of a master martial artist, and a deep, mature voice. Despite her intimidating demeanor, she's only dangerous when you threaten her friends, especially Aoi Asahina.
* Eleonore von Wittenburg from VisualNovel/DiesIrae not only has the deepest and raspiest voice of the entire female cast, but also ranks among the most dangerous and nastiest members of the Longinus Dreizehn Orden.
* Saber from VisualNovel/FateStayNight has a rather deep register, fitting her nature as a powerful swordswoman and a LadyOfWar. [[spoiler:It's insinuated that this has to do with the fact that she's Myth/KingArthur, who disguised her identity and presented herself to Camelot as a male. Her more "relaxed" versions in VideoGame/FateGrandOrder, such as her younger self and her swimsuit version, have her speak in a higher voice.]]
** This also applies to another fellow Servant, Caster (who serves as a significant antagonist in two routes; she is also coincidentally voiced by the same actress as Kusanagi above.)
* VisualNovel/HigurashiWhenTheyCry: In the remake games and anime adaptation, [[spoiler:Rika's voice]] deepens drastically during scenes where she drops her cute facade, and lets her cynical persona from . It's played for fear and mystery. According to one image song it's not only for the audience, her friends notice it too but never mention it.
* In contrast to the Urashima Woman's high-pitch, Kubitarou's voice in VisualNovel/SpiritHunterNG is low and dangerous, which also contributed to her being mistaken for a burly man.

* Belial from Webcomic/MyImpossibleSoulmate is described to have quite a deep voice for a 16-year-old, and she has considerable strength and can be very intimidating.

* WebAnimation/TheMostPopularGirlsInSchool: Played straight with Trisha, Inverted with Brittnay, and Averted with Ashley.
* WebAnimation/TOME: Kizuna has a much huskier voice than the rest of the female cast members. Her voice is used this way to portray her as being an ActionGirl, before we actually get to see her fight. It also plays up her CreepyMonotone mannerisms.
* WebAnimation/HelluvaBoss: Millie’s younger sister Sallie May is implied to be a SerialKiller who kills people for fun and hides the bodies to get away with it. She also has the deepest voice out of all the female supporting characters introduced so far. The contralto part is justified, given that she’s a transgender woman, who tend to have deeper voices than average.

* WebVideo/CarmillaTheSeries: Carmilla has a much deeper voice that suits her snarky brooding vampire self.
* WebVideo/CriticalRole: While all the female party members are dangerous and skilled fighters (being high-level [=PCs=] and all), Vex has the lowest and sultriest voice of the lot, and is quite deadly, having been trained by her tutors in the art of assassination.
** This carries over to Beau in Campaign 2, who has a deep voice to go with her sour attitude - at least compared to Jester and Yasha.
* WebVideo/DiamandaHagan has an impressively deep voice most of the time, however when she's angry her voice realistically gets higher. But considering the body count she racks up in her videos the "dangerous" part of this trope is still in full effect.
* WebVideo/TheVeronicaExclusive: Jane has the lowest voice of all the female characters, and the second-lowest voice of the cast overall, second only to Kurt Kelly. She's also a murderous psychopath.

* has Head Enforcer Grayson of Piltover, a grizzled and competent law enforcement officer voiced with Shohreh Aghdashloo's distinctive deep, throaty rasp.
* Franchise/AvatarTheLastAirbender:
** WesternAnimation/AvatarTheLastAirbender:
*** Katara will sometimes have this trait, mainly when someone threatens her friends or when she gets angry.
*** June, a bounty hunter Zuko hires to find and capture Aang, has a deeper voice than the other female characters to portray her as dangerous.
*** Avatar Kyoshi also has a deeper voice. And both she and June are also done by Creator/JenniferHale.
** WesternAnimation/TheLegendOfKorra:
*** Lin Beifong, who is an ActionGirl and is the chief of Republic City's Metal Bending Police, has a much deeper, and more commanding voice than the rest of the female cast by design to emphasize her position.
*** Korra herself would also count as an example for having a deeper voice than some of the other female characters (like GirlyBruiser Asami, or Tenzin's wife Pema). Then she enters the Avatar state, which makes her voice deeper still and more intimidating with a reverberating echo. Being TheHeroine, and a fighting prodigy, she's also the focus of most of the action in the show.
*** And on the antagonists' side, there's the towering Red Lotus combustion-bender P'Li and her throaty growl. Kuvira, the ArcVillain of Book 4, also has a very commanding, deeper, and somewhat husky voice.
* WesternAnimation/BatmanTheAnimatedSeries: Creator/DianePershing truly brought her A game when voicing Poison Ivy, effecting a very breathy, sensual tone evocative of many a 1940s film noir vamp, perfectly at place in the show's gritty setting. The most it's emphasized is in her debut episode "Pretty Poison" where, Ivy whispering out how Batman's fate will now be "sealed with a kiss", sounds both ominous and seductive at once.
* ComicBook/CaptainMarvel in the second season of WesternAnimation/TheAvengersEarthsMightiestHeroes. Not a surprise given that she's played by Creator/JenniferHale using her Commander Shepard voice.
* WesternAnimation/Gargoyles: Demona, a cunning, AxeCrazy, genocidal gargoyle. Helped by the fact that she's voiced by Creator/MarinaSirtis.
* WesternAnimation/GoofTroop has Pete's wife Peg, who usually speaks in a sweet soft voice, but will shout in a deep gruff voice when she's mad. Worth noting that she is played by Creator/AprilWinchell.
* WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic:
** Premier villain Nightmare Moon takes it to its greatest extent. Ditto Queen Chrysalis in her true form, and Sunset Shimmer from WesternAnimation/EquestriaGirls.
** On the good side, there are Applejack, Princess Celestia, and Princess Luna when sufficiently incensed. At odds with the trope, all three are generally neutral to feminine in general behavior, even Applejack.
* Another character voiced by Creator/AprilWinchell, Muriel P. Finster from WesternAnimation/Recess, is a SternTeacher with a deep, GutturalGrowler type of voice.
* WesternAnimation/StevenUniverse:
** The deepest female voices among both the protagonists and the antagonists belong to the most physically powerful of each faction -- Garnet for the heroes and Jasper for the villains.
** Also, Yellow Diamond, one of the most powerful gems in the galaxy, has this voice to match.
* WesternAnimation/TeenTitans2003 has Raven, a powerful DarkMagicalGirl who usually speaks in a deep-voiced, raspy monotone.
* Sylvia, Wander's snarky and ass-kicking steed in WesternAnimation/WanderOverYonder, has a deep contralto courtesy of Creator/AprilWinchell.
* WesternAnimation/YoungJustice2010: Artemis's voice is lower than that of Miss Martian and Zatanna, both of whom are far more feminine than her. She's also quieter, more mysterious, and more tough-acting than them. In the second season, she plays this up as Cheshire, Artemis' AntiVillain sister, and Queen Bee also qualify for this trope.

* There are several Japanese voice actresses who make a career out of playing deep-voiced women in who either are in positions of command or have great fighting skills. The biggest example and possible TropeCodifier for anime is Creator/YoshikoSakakibara (Haman Kahn, Integra Hellsing, Queen Nehelenia, etc); other members of this "club" are Creator/SanaeKobayashi, Creator/RomiPark, Creator/AiOrikasa, Creator/MitsukiSaiga, Creator/MinamiTakayama, Creator/MegumiOgata, Creator/MasakoKatsuki, Creator/YokoSoumi, Mayo Suzukaze, Creator/MarinaInoue, Creator/MiyukiSawashiro, etc. Notice how many of these women aren't incapable of using higher tones, but are often recognized by these kinds of roles; they even bother to use these voice tones to even unexpectedly voice young male characters as well, invoking CrossDressingVoices.
* This is a common shtick of Canadian voice actress Creator/JenniferHale (just see how many times she's mentioned in the Video Game and Animation sections above). She has a range of higher and lower-pitched voices to use for weaker or tougher female characters respectively. One of the best examples of this is her voice for ComicBook/JeanGrey and her SuperPoweredEvilSide, the Phoenix, which are higher and lower, respectively.
* This trope is not as common in Latin-American Spanish dubs, since many female VA's play many different roles regardless of their voice tones. Still, each country has its examples:
** Mexican dubs: the sisters Sylvia and Creator/RocioGarcel (and the first may be the TropeCodifier in Mexico), the late Liza Willert and her daughter Gabriela, Nancy [=McKenzie=], Belinda Martínez, Alejandra de la Rosa, Creator/LauraTorres, Creator/MonicaManjarrez, Gisela Casillas, Ilia Gil, Anabel Méndez, Marú Guerrero, Rebeca Patiño, Rebeca Manríquez.
** Venezuelan dubs: Maythe Guedes, Rocío Mallo.
** Chilean dubs: Rosario Zamora, Sara Pantoja.
* If UsefulNotes/JulieDAubigny a.k.a. La Maupin isn't the UrExample, she's certainly the TropeMaker. She was a star of the Paris Opera nearly as famous for her wild escapades as a duelist and her multiple love affairs (with both men and women) as she was for her vaunted contralto voice. She was also the first contralto to sing the lead role in the Opera.
* UsefulNotes/MargaretThatcher was coached to lower the pitch of her speaking, in order to come across as more authoritative and reinforce her image as the "IronLady".
* Creator/ShohrehAghdashloo's character in Series/TheExpanse, Series/TwentyFour, and several other appearances.
* Creator/BarbaraStanwyck had a deep, Brooklyn drawl, which she didn't hide when she was acting in films. It really helped for villainous characters, such as her FemmeFatale in Film/DoubleIndemnity, and her screwball comedy characters in Film/BallOfFire and Film/TheLadyEve.
* Creator/ClaudiaBlack whenever she plays an ActionGirl. Exhibit A: Morrigan. Exhibit B: Chloe Frazer. Exhibit C: Jessica Valiant.
* This is basically the schtick of any Creator/TakarazukaRevue otokoyaku male role actress when playing roles that has villainy or action.
* Elizabeth Holmes speaks in a noticeably deep voice that people question whether it's as fake as her company's business. (also, some have taken the supposedly commanding tone as instead resembling a SimpletonVoice, "Romy White doing a TED Talk"). To prepare to portray her in Series/TheDropout, Creator/AmandaSeyfried listened to hours of Holmes's recorded testimony.

* Manga/FullmetalAlchemist:
* Literature/HighSchoolDXD:
* Anime/KillLaKill:
* Franchise/LyricalNanoha:
* VideoGame/PriPara:
* Franchise/YuGiOh:

-->Catwoman: Oops.

* Literature/1995 by Creator/MarthaWells: Elen has a deep voice for a woman and is a well-connected, high-class MagicKnight.

* Franchise/BlazBlues got several examples:
* Franchise/FireEmblem:
* Franchise/Halo:
* Franchise/MassEffect:
* VideoGame/Overwatch:
* VideoGame/Paladins:
* VideoGame/PrincessMaker2:

* Franchise/AvatarTheLastAirbender:
* WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic:
* WesternAnimation/StevenUniverse:
