A Char Clone is an {{Expy}} of Char Aznable from the ''{{Gundam}}'' franchise, who [[FountainOfExpies inspired many copies]]. The ''Gundam'' series was (and is) wildly popular in Japan, with a cultural impact comparable to ''StarTrek'' or ''DoctorWho'' in the West. Char, an antagonist in the original ''Gundam'' show ''MobileSuitGundam'', became the most iconic character of the series, outpacing even the main characters and the BigBad in popularity. Given the sheer number of characters that [[ShoutOut reference]], {{homage}}, or flat out ''[[{{Expy}} are]]'' Char with a different name, they eventually [[FanNickname became known as]] Char clones.

* Racer X from SpeedRacer is TheAce rival, wears a black mask, and is secretly [[TheHero Speed's]] older brother.

It seems the lasting influence of ''MobileSuitGundam'' has not been in its protagonist, but in [[TheRival his rival]]. In almost every mecha anime since, there has been a character resembling (and homaging) Char Aznable. It doesn't even have to be by Tomino, or a Gundam, or even by Sunrise... if it's got giant robots, it has a Char Clone.

Char Clones usually have at least two (usually more) of the following attributes-
* Outfit that is [[LawOfChromaticSuperiority predominantly red in color]] and/or with a matching red mecha. When his mecha isn't red it will be white or [[BlingBlingBang gold.]]
* Not the main character, but [[EnsembleDarkhorse made easy to root for anyways]].
* CoolMask, typically silver-colored, or at least metallic in nature. Alternatively, CoolShades.
* [[BlondGuysAreEvil Blonde hair]]/[[WhiteHairedPrettyBoy Light-colored hair]].
* Status as TheAce. And if applicable, AcePilot.
* Status as TheRival.
* AFatherToHisMen, noticeably avoiding YouHaveFailedMe and being sympathetic to his subordinates.
* Being an EnigmaticMinion with his own [[HiddenAgendaVillain hidden agenda]], capable of [[ChronicBackstabbingDisorder betraying his allies at any moment given cause]]. {{Magnificent Bastard}}ry is obligatory.
* Since Chars are usually villains, or at the very least AntiHero, you can often expect a RedemptionEqualsDeath.
* Fulfilling the MessianicArchetype, inspiring others to follow him in his cause as he leads from the front.
* A recurring joke is that in the original anime, Char's Zaku is described as being ''three times faster'' than a regular Zaku[[hottip:*: the result of a dialogue flub; the actual speed is listed as one-third faster]]; a Char clone will often reference their speed being multiple times that of the protagonists'.
* Uses a fake name or SecretIdentity.
* Has a younger sister that gets emotionally involved with the hero.
* Has a secret involvement with the protagonist in one way or others. For instance, being [[LongLostRelative his long lost brother]] or [[LukeIAmYourFather father who is believed to be dead.]]
* May suffer from CloningBlues

** The [[TropeMaker original]] first appears in ''MobileSuitGundam'', reappears in a non-villainous role (and with a new "[[PaperThinDisguise secret]]" identity) in ''ZetaGundam'', and then returns as the primary antagonist in ''[=~Char's Counterattack~=]''.
*** [[ZetaGundam Zeta]] actually provided birth of a Gundam-fan [[MemeticMutation in-joke]], where Kai writes [[{{Engrish}} "Captain Quattro, he is a CHAR"]] in a letter to Hayato. The phrase ''he is a CHAR'' is often [[MemeticMutation used in joking reference]] to this trope.
** ''GundamUnicorn'' has Full Frontal, who (despite the unfortunate name) is the Chariest Char since Char himself.
*** In the novels [[spoiler: It is later revealed that he is in fact a cyber-newtype, genetically altered to look like Char, with Char's memories implanted in him via the Psyco-frame, and as a result is the first LITERAL canonical Char clone.]] Does that confirm or actually subvert this trope? ** ''GundamF91'' splits its Char clone across Carozzo Ronah and [[EyepatchOfPower Zabine Chareux]].
*** The follow-up manga ''CrossboneGundam'' has Kincaid Nau (''F91'''s Seabook Arno) fulfilling the Quattro version of the trope (OlderAndWiser BigBrotherMentor to the new protagonist) while Zabine continues to be a more traditional Char.
** ''VictoryGundam'' has Chronicle Asher, who isn't as iconic an example as some, but still fits the bill.
** ''GGundam'' splits it again, with most of the heroic aspects going to Schwartz Bruder and the villainous ones to Major Ulube.
** ''GundamWing'' has Zechs Marquise, who is so Char-like that the series has been described as "UC Gundam from [[MobileSuitGundam MSG]] to [[CharsCounterattack CCA]] compressed into one series".

** ''GundamSeed'''s Rau Le Crueset is a CharClone channeling [[CharsCounterattack CCA]]-era Char's plan up to OmnicidalManiac levels.
*** Also, Mu La Flaga, who's more like Char's heroic identity from ZetaGundam, though, by default, he's the CE equivalent of Sleggar Law.
*** Athrun Zala is also "a Char", complete with [[LawOfChromaticSuperiority red mobile suits]] and his status as TheRival. [[spoiler:But since he is made from the original idea of Char joining the heroes, he pulled a HeelFaceTurn. He also inverted the factor by hooking-up with TheHero's sister instead the other way around.]]
** ''GundamSeedDestiny'' uses Neo Roanoke to fill this role, at least in the beginning. [[spoiler:He turns back into his Quattro self in the second half, complete with [[BlingBlingBang a golden mobile suit]] that looks like Quattro's Hyaku-Shiki.]]
*** Lunamaria Hawke has a Red Uniform and pilots Red ZAKU Warriors that are similar looking to Char's Zaku II Commander Type and in {{Dynasty Warriors Gundam}} 2 She commonly pilots Char's Zaku as her default machine
*** Athrun Zala once again filled a CharClone role, this time channeling Quattro from ZetaGundam. He acts as the BigBrotherMentor to the {{Wangst}}y protagonist, and at one time made a MythologyGag about Char's PaperThinDisguise wearing CoolShades.

** ''{{Gundam 00}}'' has Graham Aker, who starts as a more general example of TheAce and TheRival, but is upgraded to a full-blown CharClone in the second season, where he gains a [[CharsCounterattack Char-scar]] and puts on a [[CoolMask mask]].
*** Arguably, Ali-Al Saachez. His mobile suits (except the first), pilot suit, A-shirt and even his [[EvilRedheads hair]] are all red. However, he was once an EvilMentor to TheHero contrary of being [[BigBrotherMentor brotherly]] like a typical ZetaGundam CharClone.
** The ''Gundam'' spin-off RPG ''MS Saga: A New Dawn'' introduces Captain Hal Vizardt (Neyarl in the original Japanese). He hits all the high notes: blonde, masked, ace pilot, acts as a mentor to TheHero, pilots red MS (for extra points, he specifically pilots Char's), and is secretly the older brother of another party member in disguise.
** ''Gunpla Builders Beginning G'' - [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTQYAsUMGFg The trailer for this show]] (which is about Gundam model builders building gundam models... [[WhatDoYouMeanItsNotAwesome then FIGHTING IN THEM]]) reveals Boris Schauer, of course, a CharClone. You can see his profile and picture [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTQYAsUMGFg#t=1m26s around the 1:28 mark]]. Because the story takes place in the real world, Boris may just be a fanboy of Char. Nevertheless, his similarity to Char is more than just cosmetic, as no ordinary fanboy will riding CoolHorse just to mimic Char.
* While predating Char, Red Impulse of ''{{Gatchaman}}'' fits the character type: wears red, hides his identity behind a mask, has a familial relationship with the main character(he's Ken The Eagle's dad), a father to his men, an ace pilot, more anti-heroic to the G Team's more heroic approach and meets his death near the end of the series.
* ''[[GenesisOfAquarion Aquarion]]'' has Sirius de Alisia.
* ''ArmoredTrooperVotoms'' - The character, Ypsilon, is this series' Char-clone.
* ''AuraBattlerDunbine'' - Bern Bunnings from this show is an obvious Char: Rival status, fake moniker, wears a mask, extreme respect from his underlings, and grudging respect from his superiors.
** There's even an episode [[OlderThanTheyThink called]] ''[[CharsCounterattack Bern's Counterattack]]''.
* ''{{Bakugan}}'' - Spectra Phantom wears mostly red (including a mask), is blonde, is TheRival, [[spoiler: and is actually named Keith Clay, the older brother of Mira Clay.]] Also, Masquerade doesn't have a thing for red nor does he [[spoiler: err, she]] have a younger sister, but he is mostly this trope.
* ''BigO'' - Schwartzwald: masked character with his own agenda, consistent rival to the lead, pilots '''three''' red mechs, and they are more maneuverable (three times faster).
* ''BraveRaideen'' - Actually a ''reverse'' of this trope; the character Prince Sharkin is who Char Aznable was modelled after. For all intents and purposes, however, it can also qualify.

* ''CodeGeass'' - Arguably the show's main character, Lelouch is, in fact, a Char.
** He's an estranged son of an important political figure, he has a grudge towards a whole family of nobility, he has a fake name, he wears a mask, he has a younger sister, he's handsome, he's charismatic, he has no loyalty to anyone except himself, he has no qualms about killing people who are nice to him in the past. Definitely a Char. Also worth a mention, is that WordOfGod indicates he was initially going to be a WhiteHairedPrettyBoy, and thus would have looked the part even more.
** In fact, co-creator and head writer Ichiro Okouchi himself said that Zero was designed specifically to wear a mask because he felt that it would not be a Sunrise show otherwise.
** Char's piloting skills belong to Kallen though, who is an AcePilot with speedy red mecha (and who usually dresses in red). While Lelouch is TheRival of Suzaku on a personal level, Kallen is Suzaku's rival in combat.
* ''DancougarNova'' - A masked blonde woman who pilots the red mecha R-Daigun against Dancougar. She turns out to be [[spoiler: the IdolSinger Eida]].
* ''FistOfTheNorthStar'' - Arguably, Shin is the Char. This makes it all the more amusing since Ken is a BruceLeeClone.
* ''FutureGPXCyberFormula'' - [[NoCelebritiesWereHarmed Knight Schumacher]]/[[spoiler:Osamu Sugo]] is TheAce, TheRival, has CoolShades, his younger sister is in love with the hero and drives a white and red formula car.
* ''GaoGaiGar'' - Soldat J: blond, wears a face obscuring helmet, rival to main character, is faster than the main character on foot and in his smaller mecha, [[EnsembleDarkhorse and is incredibly popular.]]
* ''GearFighterDendoh'' has Altair (the mask-wearing badguy), who is the brother of one of the main characters and {{the rival}} of the protagonists (though [[BrainwashedAndCrazy not by choice]]). He also uses a palette-swap of Dendoh, the Knight Gear Ogre.

* ''IsekaiNoSeikishiMonogatari'' - Dagmyer. Handsome blonde who wears a mask in the first episode , inspiring leader and idealist fighting against the system, ManipulativeBastard... he hits most of the criteria except that he uses a blue Seikishin. ** Ulyte, [[TwoTeacherSchool the male of the two teachers in the series]] also qualifies; [[HiddenAgendaVillain playing both sides against the middle for the sake of his own mysterious agenda]]. [[spoiler:And he/she even has the mask aspect covered as Neizai.]]
* ''LegendOfTheGalacticHeroes'' - Reinhard von Lohengramm. Blonde rival commander with intensely loyal subordinates; has a mysterious edge and felt the need to use a secret identity.
* ''MagicalGirlLyricalNanoha'': Nanoha's basically a Gundam disguised as a magical girl, so is it any wonder her first-season rival Fate is a blonde whose fighting style is geared for speed? Especially when she gets Sonic Form in A's, which makes her [[MemeticMutation three times faster!]]
* ''MetalArmorDragonar'' - Meio Plato, the AcePilot rival with the nickname Blue Hawk.
** He is also designed to resemble ''[[CharsCounterattack CCA]]'' Char, his sister is a major character on the protagonists' side and has his own AceCustom Metal Armor.
* In ''SandsOfDestruction'' based on a video game of the same name the Char clone is a black ''teddy bear'' with an eyepatch and red bandanna voiced by the original [[ShuuichiIkeda Char]]. To top it off, he is a friend turned rival to another teddy bear Toppi, who is [[RelationshipVoiceActor voiced by]] the original [[TohruFuruya Amuro]].
* ''SchoolRumble'' - Harry [=McKenzie=] is a parody of this trope, being a Char in a non-mecha setting.
* ''SoukouNoStrain'', while officially ''ALittlePrincess'' [[RecycledInSpace in space]], has been described as "''MobileSuitGundam'' starring Sayla". Actually, both Ralph and his main character sister Sara have elements of Char-cloning (though Sara's mech is ''pink''...). Amusingly enough, Ralph looks 99% identical to [[GundamWing Zechs Merquise]], the biggest difference being a [[GoodScarsEvilScars large scar over one eye]].
* ''TengenToppaGurrenLagann'' - One could argue Viral is a Char as well (TheAce, TheRival, red clothing), albeit being much more [[HotBlooded hot-headed]].
* ''TheFiveStarStories'' - Vralgo "[[RedBaron Testarossa]]" Kentauri is definitely A CHAR, even wearing a mask (and a fake beard, of all things) while posing as the mercenary knight "Boowray Red". Unlike most Char Clones, he only lasts a single story arc before his final battle with his own arch-rival, King Colus, comes to a mutually fatal conclusion similar to the original's. Interestingly his and Colus' descendants become allies in a later story arc.
* ''{{Zoids}} Genesis'' - Zairin of Zaltz is quite the Zoid prodigy. He seems to be quite a familiar character, no?
* Griffith of ''{{Berserk}}'' in the Golden Age arc. He is not the main character (He's the BigBad though). Cool silver colored helmet that looks like a bird. White hair. He is TheRival (and again, BigBad) to Guts. He's a father to his men [[spoiler: so long as they don't stand between him and his goal, which also pegs the "can betray his allies at any given time" trope]] and he's the DarkMessiah.
* ''{{Infinite Stratos}}'' Charlotte Dunois pilots an orange coloured mass produced IS under the disguise of a guy as Charles. Not the main girl, but certainly the most popular, though later she gets the nickname "Char" from the main character, making her not just a Char clone but a CHAR! Also an expy of Kyousuke and his Alt Eisen which is also a Char machine.
* Might be a stretch, but Andy on ''CowboyBebop'' is TheRival to Spike and the "next time on" announcement at the end of the episode (jokingly) refers to the next episode as "[[CharsCounterattack Andy's Counterattack]], and you could probably make a comparison between Andy's attempts to craft a bounty-hunter persona and the [[PaperThinDisguise paper-thin disguises]] of Chars.

* Another UrExample. [[StarWars Darth Vader]] has some Char-like aspects. Secret identity? Yes. Mask? Yes, although in his case he needs it to survive. Ace custom? Yes. Secret relation to the hero? Yes.

* ''GaiaGear'' - A literal version of this trope? A novel sci-fi novel written by the man himself, [[KillEmAll Tomino]]. It seemed he was unable to write anything without making a Char, so he literally integrated an actual CLONE of Char Aznable named Afranshia Char. Gaia Gear is not even considered part of the Gundam universe.
** It was originally ''intended'' to be, however. It ran in ''Newtype magazine'' before being published in book form.
** Ironically, this is one of Tomino's few works, that does not actually have a Char Clone in the sense the others do. It quite Literally has the Char Clone, but not only is Afranshia Char the hero to the story, but the Rival, Ul Urian, shares little in common with Char Clones.

* ''SuperRobotWars'' - The irony being that since the series is a MassiveMultiplayerCrossover, you will often find several Char clones alongside Char HIMSELF in the same game!

* Meta Knight from the ''{{Kirby}}'' series lacks the blonde hair (or ''any'' hair) and red clothing, but he does always wear a mask, has definite AntiHero[=/=]AntiVillain tendencies as well as always insisting on fighting Kirby honorably, and [[spoiler:turns out to be the same species as Kirby when he's finally unmasked.]] [[KirbyOfTheStars The anime]] also added AFatherToHisMen and EnigmaticMinion to the list.

* Probably unintentional, but Matt Trakker, the lead hero of {{MASK}}, is blonde, wears a mask, and drives a red transforming vehicle.

* ''{{Operator}}'' - Just about the only named enemy character is blond-haired HumongousMecha ace Jaeger, who incidentally wears red and seems to exist purely to fight the main character one-on-one.

* Griffith of ''{{Berserk}}'' in the Golden Age arc. He is not the main character (He's the BigBad though). Cool silver colored helmet that looks like a bird. White hair. He is TheRival (and again, BigBad) to Guts. He's a father to his men [[spoiler: so long as they don't stand between him and his goal, which also pegs the "can betray his allies at any given time" trope]]. He's the DarkMessiah.

* [[StarWars Darth Vader]] has some Char-like aspects. Secret identity? Yes. Mask? Yes, although in his case he needs it to survive. Ace custom? Yes. Secret relation to the hero? Yes.

* ''SoukouNoStrain'', while officially ''ALittlePrincess'' [[RecycledInSpace in space]], has been described as "''MobileSuitGundam'' starring Sayla". Actually, both Ralph and his main character sister Sara have elements of Char-cloning (though Sara's mech is ''pink''...).
