If the flashback is anything to go by, Ernesto didn't have faith in that dream or himself to even try and achieve fame without Héctor's songs. Or in the least, without murdering his friend and then stealing those songs.
** When Héctor confronts Ernesto for never giving him credit for the songs he wrote, Ernesto claims that he only sang them to keep Héctor's memory alive. Héctor doesn't buy it for a second.
