OfficialCouple, whilst Betty was a frequent holder of the JerkassBall in the early years of the comic.

This is a little too negative towards the Veronica, remember in the trope Namer, Betty did alot of villainous things.

This trope is almost endlessly flexible. In a commonly-seen version, Betty is Archie's loyal comrade and usually his best friend, secretly pining for him while he ([[ObliviousToLove unaware of her feelings]]) is attracted only to Veronica, the sultry Ms. Unattainable who barely notices him. Since Betty [[IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy wants Archie to be happy]], she may even assist him in his pursuit of Veronica, even though we all know how much she wants him for herself. Another version begins with Archie already in a relationship with one of the girls when he starts to see the potential in the other: Veronica's excitement or Betty's stability. If Archie's parents are likely to [[ArrangedMarriage make the decision]] for him, [[ParentPreferredSuitor Betty is the girl they want]] and [[ParentalMarriageVeto Veronica is the one they don't]], especially if [[IWantGrandkids children are expected]] (because Betty is more likely to want them). When Archie meets Betty and Veronica at the same time — if they are sisters, for example — he will fall in LoveAtFirstSight with Veronica and only notice Betty after she had time to grow on him (for instance, on his repeated visits to their parents' house to try to woo Veronica).

Whom the hero will end up with varies according to medium, story, and the [[ValuesDissonance values of the time period and culture]] where the story was made. Traditionally, Betty stood a better chance, at least if the story had a HappyEnding, due to [[MadonnaWhoreComplex conforming to social standards]]: choosing Veronica would only lead the poor sap into [[DownerEnding ruin]]. Usually, the hero would [[WrongGuyFirst spend the story chasing Veronica only to realize that Betty was The One]] — complete with a convenient "appreciate what you've got" or TrueBeautyIsOnTheInside Aesop. (In extreme but fairly frequent cases, he would learn that Veronica was in fact [[SurpriseIncest his illegitimate half-sister]].)

However, as the perception of "appropriate" sexual conduct has changed over time, it's more common for Veronica to have a happy ending too, if not with the main hero, then as part of a BetaCouple or PairTheSpares. Movies have traditionally favored Betty, but video games, comics, and TV shows (especially long runners) have played this trope for all its worth. The first time Anne was Veronica, it went pretty good for her. The second time, she was beheaded, so not as much. [[UsefulNotes/AnneofCleves Anne of Cleves]] Henry’s German fourth wife, was very pretty in real life, being tall, Blonde, slim and well-mannered, but she was not attracted to the by then morbidly obese, older Henry. This caused Henry to claim Anne of Cleves was ugly, and he spent more time in the bedchamber of Auburn or Brunette UsefulNotes/CatherineHoward, Anne’s teenage lady-in-waiting. Anne of Cleves started out as the Betty, with Catherine Howard as the Veronica (but Catherine Howard was only a teenager and today Henry would have been considered a pedophile). When Catherine Howard was beheaded for adultery, Anne of Cleves once again attempted to remarry Henry (who was by then her friend) at the urge of her brother John. However, Henry VIII was more interested in the Auburn or Brunette photo-feminist and intelligent [[UsefulNotes/CatherineParr Katherine Parr]]. So for the final marriage, Katherine Parr was the Betty to Anne of Cleves Veronica. During Henry’s sixth marriage, after he fell out with Katherine Parr over his religious views, Henry briefly considered a seventh marriage to Katherine Brandon, the Veronica, with rumoured plans of annulling or even beheading Parr. However, Katherine Parr reconciled with the King just in time.

Despite his love for Catherine, Charles fathered at least 12 illegitimate children with his mistresses, but none with his wife (who had at least 3 miscarriages). Charles’s favourite mistress was Barbara Villiers, the Veronica, who was cruel to Queen Catherine, the Betty.

One of the most common types of LoveTriangle, named after characters from ComicBook/ArchieComics, wherein the main character ("Archie") is caught between two love interests with drastically different personalities. "Betty" is the sweet, [[AFriendInNeed reliable]], everyday GirlNextDoor type (which could mean "kind of dull"), while "Veronica" is more alluring, exotic, and edgy, but has more of a mischievous or {{ic|eQueen}}y personality (which could mean "kind of a bitch"). This translates to their physical appearances; Betty will be pretty but modest in dress, while Veronica will be MsFanservice in all her glory. As a rule, they will have different hair colors per the BlondeBrunetteRedhead trope.

[[folder:Real Life]]
* [[TruthInTelevision This sort of thing happens all the time in real life]]. Unless you're one of those people who married your high school sweetheart and stayed married, you'll probably find yourself in this situation at least once. Worse, you'll find yourself in every conceivable combination of personalities, regardless of gender or sexual identity. No matter who you are, you are someone's Betty and someone else's Veronica. To one person, you might be a badass, strong personality, and to another, you're overly sensitive and sweet, but the person in question knows you're ultimately the better partner. Love triangles and quadrangles happen all the time, with people simultaneously attracted to two people, but in different ways.
* Real-life Betty/Veronica tensions = brunette, cute Creator/JudyGarland vs. fast, "SweaterGirl" Lana Turner, both in love with bandleader Artie Shaw.
* More famously, Creator/DebbieReynolds (Betty) vs. Creator/ElizabethTaylor (Veronica). After Liz was widowed suddenly in 1958, Reynolds' husband [[Creator/EddieFisher Edwin "Eddie" Fisher]] (father to Creator/{{Carrie|Fisher}}, and the best friend of Taylor's dead husband) left his family to be with Liz. The nation sided against Eddie and Liz until Liz came down with a near-fatal case of pneumonia.
* Blonde Creator/JenniferAniston as the Betty, brunette Creator/AngelinaJolie as the Veronica, Creator/BradPitt as... Archie? The tabloids had many, many field days with this, as did the [[http://women.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/women/celebrity/article6609795.ece broadsheets... ]]
* Music/TheNotoriousBIG and his well-known triangle with Music/LilKim and FaithEvans. Which is Betty and which is Veronica is not as clear as it seems, as he and Kim were intimate for years before he met Faith.
* Music/JohnLennon (Archie)/Cynthia Lennon (Betty)/Music/YokoOno (Veronica, in the "exotic and edgy" sense).
* Music/JoeJonas chose Creator/CamillaBelle (Veronica) over his Betty girlfriend Music/TaylorSwift. After his breakup with Camilla, he then dated Music/DemiLovato, Creator/AshleyGreene (both Bettys), Blanda Eggenschweiler, and Gigi Hadid (both Veronicas) before he settled down with Creator/SophieTurner (Cheryl).
* There's the famous rumor of President Kennedy cheating on his beloved wife Jackie with popular actress Marilyn Monroe. Interestingly, sophisticated, wealthy BrainyBrunette Jackie has the exotic Veronica personality while bubbly, rags-to-riches Marilyn is more of a Betty here.
* UsefulNotes/HenryVIII's wives. Catherine of Aragon, who sewed all Henry's shirts herself, gave money to the poor, and [[NiceToTheWaiter remembered all of her servants by name in her will]] is the Betty, with flirtatious Anne Boleyn, well known for her quick wit and short temper, as the Veronica. Then Anne Boleyn is still the Veronica but Jane Seymour with her old-fashioned values, modesty, and spotless reputation is the Betty. Later, Anne of Cleves, initially shy, fond of needlework, and popular with the people, is the Betty with Catherine Howard, sexually experienced girl who enjoyed life and was unfaithful, as the Veronica. Katherine Parr, nurse to Henry, caring stepmother and household manager, actually came onto the scene later but the pattern still goes "Betty, Veronica, Betty" twice.
* Diana Mitford, one of the infamous Mitford sisters, experienced this conundrum once. There was Bryan Guinness - a sweet, young, [[HairOfGoldHeartOfGold fair-haired]] gentleman, absolutely besotted with Diana. And then there was Oswald Mosley - a TallDarkAndHandsome fascist leader and a notorious ladykiller, obsessed with her. Guess, whom did she choose? Hint: [[EvilIsSexy she was buried as Lady Mosley]].
* King Charles III and his two wives, the first of whom he cheated on with his second wife. Tall, beautiful, kind and insecure Princess Diana would be considered the Betty to Queen Camilla’s laid-back Veronica. Princess Diana was the first wife of Charles III; the marriage soured when it became clear that Charles was not just friends with ex-girlfriend Camilla Parker-Bowles. However, Diana had won the hearts of the public, who wanted her to be Queen of the UK one day. Soon, rumours came. Charles and Camilla were passionately in love, but the affair made Diana very insecure. Diana developed Bulimia and jumped down a staircase while pregnant after an argument with Charles left her suicidal. Diana did an interview eventually stating that “there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded” and the couple eventually divorced. Charles and Camilla instantly got the blame for the divorce and were the tabloids best topic. Diana died in 1997, and Camilla wed Charles in 2005. Though for a long time Camilla was unpopular with the people, she has since become more popular, with many blaming the affair more on Charles, and the Royal Family for not letting Charles and Camilla marry in the first place. It has been recognised that Charles and Camilla do love each other, but Diana’s memory will forever be loved and admired.
