* BrokenAesop: Since the duckling is only accepted by the other swans, the aesop can come across as "stick with your own kind!"

* RhymingTitle: The title is memorable by its assonance, although this is a coincidence, as it was originally written in Danish, rather than English.

Adaptations include a famous [[WesternAnimation/TheUglyDuckling1939 Disney cartoon]] from 1939, and a [[WesternAnimation/TheUglyDuckling 1997 animated movie]] based on The Ugly Duckling but with its own original plot. A long running [[WesternAnimation/TheUglyDuckling2000 animated series]] was also made, but it is essentially LostMedia at this point.

It needs to be said that the lack of antagonists implies more than the absence of a central villain, a Big Bad and that the conflict comes from impersonal problems. When society is the antagonist it is represented through some agents who can be considered antagonists

* NoAntagonist: Like quite a few of Andersen's works, there is no clear-cut "villain" in the story. Instead, the conflict comes from the duckling's struggle to be accepted.

Beauty Equals Goodness definitely does not fit here. The nicest character in the story is an *ugly* duckling.
