** Many of the games' antagonists feel that this is InTheBlood for [[VillainousLineage hereditary]]for the Bhaalspawn, but [[spoiler:the main character]] can act any way the player likes, to the point of becoming one of the world's most renowned heroes.

* InTheBlood: Played with at length (it's one of the major themes of the series), but ultimately subverted.
** Evil Bhaalspawn are happy to believe it about themselves, but as [[spoiler:Imoen]] and potentially Charname prove, in this universe people ultimately choose their own moral nature.
** Sarevok is an even stronger subversion -- at first he himself believes it, as does his lover Tamoko, but his backstory and potential HeelFaceTurn (in [[spoiler:''Throne of Bhaal]]'') prove him wrong; if he and Charname are at different ends of the ethical spectrum, it's not because of their shared parentage, but because of [[UpbringingMakesTheHero their different experiences growing up]].
** Portalbendarwinden will tell the PC that their "coin is on edge", which in this universe means that the goddesses of luck and misfortune have no hold on you and you are free to [[ScrewDestiny forge your own path]], regardless of what your divine lineage may try to dictate. Whether Elminster or Gorion knew this is never revealed, though.

''Baldur's Gate'' is a RolePlayingGame series set in the HighFantasy setting ''TabletopGame/ForgottenRealms'', using an adaptation of the ''Advanced TabletopGame/DungeonsAndDragons'' 2nd edition ruleset. The focus is on quests, characterization and dialogue, combined with a solid combat system and a continuous plotline. The original games were developed by Creator/BioWare and published by Creator/BlackIsleStudios. More recently, other developers have taken up work on the series -- updated editions and a new expansion were produced by Beamdog, which was founded by [=BioWare=] alumni, and in 2019, it was announced that a full new game would be created by Creator/LarianStudios.

* OldSaveBonus: The series has this in two main ways: Character Exporting and Save File Importing.
** Character File Exporting gives the player the chance to play with a PlayerCharacter used in a previous campaign. This allows the player to start at a higher level, benefit from the use of manuals and tomes used to raise their character stats and keep their Bhaalspawn powers.
** Save File Importing allows the player to transfer their save files from one chapter of the series to another. Like Character File Exporting this is useful for increased XP and better stats via manuals and tomes, but it also allows them to keep specific pieces of equipment from game to game. As of the release of ''Siege of Dragonspear'', this is how it works:
*** ''VideoGame/BaldursGate: Enhanced Edition'' (which includes ''[[VideoGame/BaldursGateTalesOfTheSwordCoast Tales of the Sword Coast]]'') files can be exported to ''VideoGame/BaldursGateSiegeOfDragonspear'' or ''VideoGame/BaldursGateII: Enhanced Edition''. This allows the player to bring a party of their choice into ''Siege of Dragonspear'' as well as certain magic items they otherwise can't obtain during the Dragonspear campaign. It also allows the player to pick certain items to export to ''Baldur's Gate II'', which it shares with ''Siege of Dragonspear'' below.
*** ''Siege of Dragonspear'' save files can be imported into ''Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition''. This allows the player to import items from the following tables: The Golden Pantaloons, a JokeItem that serves a purpose in the endgame of the saga, one of four magic armours[[note]]Protector of the Second (Leather Armor +2), Mail of the Dead (Chain Mail +2), Fallorain's Plate (Plate Mail +1) or Chain Mail +3[[/note]], one of four mid-to-high-tier magic items[[note]]The Helm of Balduran, the Claw of Kazgaroth (a cursed magic ring), the Horn of Kazgaroth (a special magic potion) or Koveras's Ring of Protection (a Ring of Protection +1)[[/note]], certain magic weapons [[note]]The Burning Earth (Longsword +1 that does extra damage to lycanthropes, trolls, winter wolves and undead), Ashideena (Warhammer +2 that does extra lightning damage), Wizard Slayer (Battle Axe that applies a high chance of miscasting spells to target), Suryis's Blade (Halberd +2), The Grave Binder (Dagger +2 with better damage dice), Staff Spear (a Quarterstaff that functions as a Spear +2), Staff Mace (a Quarterstaff that functions as a Mace +2 with 2d4 damage dice), Arla's Dragonbane (Sling +3), Varscona (Longsword +2 with extra cold damage), Krotan’s Skullcrusher (Mace +2) or Kiel's Morning Star (cursed Morning Star +3 that causes its wielder to go Berserk)[[/note]] and up to ten magic weapons and items found during the ''Dragonspear'' campaign[[note]]The Archer's Eyes amulet, the Bard Hat, the Belt of the Skillful Blade, a magic dart called the Biter, the Buckler of the Fist, the two-handed Dragon Blade, the Helmet of Dumathoin, the Robe of Red Flames, a bard instrument called the Tangled Strings and the Voidsword/Voidhammer[[/note]]. The items from the original game can be found throughout the initial dungeon, while the ''Dragonspear'' items are scattered throughout the rest of the ''Shadows of Amn'' campaign in the loot piles of certain dungeons and the inventories of certain merchants.
** ''Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition'' allows files from its ''Shadows of Amn'' Campaign to be imported into its ''[[VideoGame/BaldursGateIIThroneOfBhaal Throne of Bhaal]]'' campaign. Some weapons and items can only be brought over in this way (including crafted weapons like [[InfinityPlusOneSword Crom Faeyr]]), but its most notable quality is that the Golden Pantaloons from the first game, along with the Silver Pantaloons obtained during ''Shadows of Amn'' and the Bronze Pantalettes obtained during ''Throne of Bhaal'' can be combined into the Big Metal Unit, a highly-powerful armour that comes with its own unique weapon.

Intelligence does have one edge case where it benefits melee fighters to have at least 11 in the stat- Mind Flayers drain 5 points of INT per hit, and dropping to 0 is fatal. This is why Minsc is particularly terrible at fighting them, his awful INT score only allowing him to survive a single hit.

*** Warriors' dump stats are (in that order): INT, CHA, WIS, additional class requirements notwithstanding (they should go for max STR first, then for max CON and DEX - unless you play a ranged character who doesn't need high STR).

** In practice, though, it's actually INT that provides significantly higher lore gains on level up than wisdom. This is why bards, wizards, and characters with high INT like Imoen are good for identifying items. Wisdom may give a bit of a bonus to lore, but it's not really noticeable with an INT of 10. Stating WIS gives the better lore scores is a mistake in the game.

* KarmaMeter: The reputation level. Unfortunately, you receive a significant bonus for a high reputation and serious penalties for a very low one, so it ends up being in the best interests of even the most psychotically evil of player characters to end up being a VillainWithGoodPublicity. You can commit any atrocity you like as long as you donate money to the church occasionally, which is cheap enough to keep the guards off you. So it's not a very ''accurate'' karma meter.
** Another backwards element is the way your party members react to it. Good characters don't like a low Reputation, which is obvious, but in the first game, Neutral characters like Jaheira, Xan and Branwen will alternate between praising and complaining about both low ''and'' high Reputation, which can be incredibly annoying. Also, Evil characters complain if your Reputation gets too high, and will eventually leave, which makes little in the way of sense [[FridgeLogic when you think about it]]. Perhaps this was acknowledged; in the EE you get ChaoticNeutral Neera who is generally chirpy as long as you don't get ''too'' evil, and NeutralEvil Dorn, who is consistently sullen and bitter even when you're slaughtering your way through small orphanages.

You can commit any atrocity you like as long as you donate money to the church occasionally, which is cheap enough to keep the guards off you. So you; so it's not a very ''accurate'' karma meter.

meter. Another backwards element is the way your party members react to it.

* FollowTheLeader: Baldur's Gate is often credited as singlehandedly saving the WesternRPG genre from drying up entirely as well as [[TropeCodifier setting the standards that RPGs follow today]]. Ironically, it only managed to do so by adopting certain traits from the EasternRPG genre: instead of letting the player generate a party of what essentially constitutes a bunch of FacelessMooks without personality or backstory, the BaldursGate-style game has the player assemble a party of premade NPC companions; only the main character is generated, with the player usually having some choices when it comes to deciding on a class, a personality and possibly some background elements (that part is a departure from the EasternRPG where the hero usually is as predefined as any other character).

* DumpStat: Charisma, unsurprisingly (since this is ''VideoGame/DungeonsAndDragons'' that we're talking about here, after all). Most roleplayers (and in particular those who have a bit of pride and self-esteem will refuse to set it too low, but {{Munchkin}}s in particular have a tendency to dump it as low as possible (unless it is a class that requires high Charisma, such as a Paladin, a Bard or a Druid). The reason for that is the fact that the only charisma stat that is ever measured by the game engine is that of the party leader. The first NPC recruited in both games, [[BreakoutCharacter Imoen]], also happens to have very good charisma. Go figure.
** It's because, in the first game at least, you could make Imoen party leader and have her do the talking, and the game would calculate based on ''her'' charisma instead of yours -- the game actually calculated based on which [=NPC=] was doing the talking, not just Charname's. As of the Enhanced Edition versions, having an [=NPC=] be your "spokesperson" no longer works-- Charname's charisma is the only value calculated.
** There is a good reason to have charisma as high as you can get it in the first game, though. In the beginning at Candlekeep, if your charisma is 17, Fuller won't give you the +1 Dagger as a reward and talking to Firebead multiple times won't yield the 300 gold you'd get if your charisma was 18. The dagger can be identified and sold, and the player can buy better armor and even a spare weapon with the 450 gold from the dagger and Firebead. A bit of a helpful cheat for new players and those that wear armor, not so much for mages. [=NPC=]s met early in the game when reputation is still low may not join if charisma is also low because every significant [=NPC=] is programmed with an [=NPC=] Reaction value. [[http://www.forgottenwars.com/bg1/miscellany.htm The NPC Reaction]] section linked does a good job of explaining how the reaction is calculated. The walkthrough on that same site will give the reaction value needed for each quest and the rewards that can be given for them. [[http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/7591/charisma-reaction-adjustment-actually-do-anything This page]] gives the Charisma reaction values.
** Charisma is also the leadership stat, and doesn't really have anything to do with your character's appearance (although it's easy to assume that good-looking people have an easier time persuading people to do what they want). As a result, having a high charisma can delay MutuallyExclusivePartyMembers from fighting with each other to some extent, although it won't delay their fighting permanently.

* DumpStat: Charisma, Obviously, since we're dealing with an AD&D game.
** From a general perspective, almost every ability can potentially be one:
*** Strength: Can be used as one if not playing as a warrior. Especially pure mages have little use for it considering how pathetic their melee skills are. Rogues and priests on the other hand are a mixed bag: They don't benefit ''that'' much from it since they have only one attack per round and are capped at STR 18, which has relatively low bonuses compared to the warrior-specific stat, so an average stat isn't exactly a dealbreaker. However, rogues benefit greatly for their backstab (not to mention the melee-oriented thief and bard kits), while clerics make decent tanks with their buffs and armor (for which they need decent STR anyway). More importantly, if you start with the first game, you'll be able to get a stat boost that brings you to 19, which is definitely a great boon for all classes except aforementioned pure mages.
*** Dexterity: While this stat definitely benefits from being maxed out to 18 regardless of class (that sweet -4 AC is invaluable), if for whatever reason you decide that you ''don't'' need a good dexterity, 7 will do - according to AD&D-rules, everything between 7 and 14 is functionally identical.
*** Constitution: Another stat that should be raised to 16 (for non-warriors) or 18/19 (for warriors), since - in addition to better saving throws - the additional HP are extremely important especially at lower levels: even with abdundant SaveScumming for max HP rolls, having the highest possible bonus for a class bumps up your HP pool by between 25% (priests) and 50% (warriors with CON 19 or 20, or mages); though it starts to even out after level 9 (rogues and warriors) or 10 (mages and priests). That said, you should never go below an average value here.
*** Intelligence: Unless you're a mage, you don't really need that stat since it doesn't really have an impact on anything: it doesn't modify your saving throws, normal skills don't exist in the game (and therefore you don't get bonus points for them), and your conversation choices are mostly standardized.
*** Wisdom: Like intelligence, except for non-priests. The only difference is that good WIS affects a few saving throws.
*** Charisma: This ability is useful especially if you have a lower reputation, but since the game is balanced in a way that it doesn't require you to have a good or even just mediocre CHA stat, this one can be used as a dump stat as well. It can be argued extensively for either case (see below).
** From a class perspective (Class kits may change things, though):
*** Warriors' dump stats are (in that order): INT, CHA, WIS, additional class requirements notwithstanding (they should go for max STR first, then for max CON and DEX - unless you play a ranged character who doesn't need high STR).
*** Mages' dump stats are (in that order): STR, CHA, WIS, additional class requirements notwithstanding (they should go for max INT first, then for max DEX and CON 16).
*** Priests' dump stats are (in that order): INT and CHA, additional class requirements notwithstanding. Generally speaking, they should go for max WIS first, then for max DEX and CON 16. Max STR is reasonably useful, especially if you can acquire a stat boost to 19, but not an absolute must-have. You shouldn't go below 12 or so if you want to wear heavy armor, though (and then you can't carry a lot of other stuff).
*** Rogues' dump stats are (in that order): INT, CHA, WIS, then STR, additional class requirements notwithstanding. They should go for max DEX and CON 16 first. Max STR is reasonably useful, especially if you can acquire a stat boost to 19.
** As seen above, CHA is pretty popular as a DumpStat,
unsurprisingly (since this is ''VideoGame/DungeonsAndDragons'' that we're talking about here, after all). *** In practice, though, it's actually INT that provides significantly higher lore gains on level up than wisdom. This is why bards, wizards, and characters with high INT like Imoen are good for identifying items. Wisdom may give a bit of a bonus to lore, but it's not really noticeable with an INT of 10. Stating WIS gives the better lore scores is a mistake in the game.
