* ChosenConceptionPartner: Although half kidding and half serious, Hester says she wants lots and lots of babies and can only have some if she’s married to Robert. Mrs. Phelps doesn’t take kindly to this and soon plants the seed in Robert to break up with Hester.
* ControlFreak: Mrs. Phelps wants Robert to continue living in their home, and she manipulates David into buying and developing a piece of land not far from their home
* DangerThinIce: Unable to cope with the oppressive home, Hester runs away at night, running over the lake. It’s dark, so she forgot that there was a hole open for fishing.
* FreudianExcuse: Mrs. Phelps married for money, not for love. Her husband afforded her no love, so she transferred that romantic ideal to her sons, creating, shall we say, a very unhealthy relationship.
* HotScientist: Christina is a biology scientist, but no more detail is given as to ‘’what’’ she does in biology.
