-->--'''Selina Kyle'''

Eight years after the end of ''The Dark Knight'', Bruce Wayne has retired from his work as the Batman and settled into a humdrum life as the CEO of Wayne Enterprises. The Dent Act has helped the police slow the spread of crime in Gotham to a controllable crawl. Commissioner Gordon, now resigned to paperwork instead of fieldwork, has to deal with attempts by other city officials to drive him out of office -- all while he keeps the truth about Batman's disappearance [[spoiler:and Harvey Dent's death]] a secret. The peace Batman has given his beloved city might fall apart, however, when wily thief named [[ComicBook/{{Catwoman}} Selina Kyle]] and soon after a masked terrorist who calls himself Bane both arrive in Gotham...

* AbsurdlySpaciousSewer: Bane's hideout.

* CombatStilettos: Catwoman sports a pair, complete with serrated-edge heels. Lampshaded by one of the villains, who then proceeded to be [[GroinAttack incapacitated]] by said heel.
* CompositeCharacter: Despite being [[CanonForeigner an original character for the movies]], Officer/Detective John Blake is made out to be one over the rest of the film. He is one for [[spoiler: the first three Robins. His fulll name is Robin John Blake; his parents died at a young age like Dick Grayson; his orphan background, street smarts and pragmatism with guns mirror Jason Todd; and he was wise enough to deduce Bruce Wayne is Batman like Tim Drake. * CorruptCorporateExecutive: John Daggett.
* CowardlyLion: Deputy Commissioner Peter Foley folds it when Gotham falls to Bane's hands, even with Commissioner Gordon chewing him out in front of his wife. [[spoiler: He does come back into action when Batman reappears.]]
* CurbStompBattle: [[spoiler:Bane ''rips'' Batman apart in their first encounter.]]
* DarkerAndEdgier: Bane is every bit as formidable a fighter as in the comics, but his ostentatious luchadore mask has been completely discarded, in favour of a rather intimidating looking breathing apparatus.
* DaydreamSurprise: While Bruce Wayne is in [[spoiler: prison, Ra's Al Ghul appears to come to see him, but it is just a hallucination.]]
* DeadpanSnarker:
** Bane, in another villainous example.

'''Bane:''' [[RealitySubtext Then why]] [[TakeThat are you here?]]
** Lucius Fox, as always.
--->'''Lucius:''' And yes, Mr. Wayne, [[CallBack it does come in black]].
* DeathFakedForYou: Bane fakes the death of his associate Dr. Pavel by taking a blood transfusion and injecting it into a corpse that's about to be mangled beyond recognition in a plane crash.
** The film ends with [[spoiler: Bruce/Batman faking his death in a blaze of glory with the nuclear bomb, [[BroughtDownToNormal living in peace]] and dating in Italy with Selina, as Alfred happily found out]].
* DentedIron: Due to the accumulation of injuries during his career as Batman, Bruce Wayne has been reduced to hobbling around with a cane.
* DisasterMovie: [[WordOfGod Nolan]] has stated that with its increased scale, ''Rises'' steps square into this territory as well.
* TheDogWasTheMastermind: [[spoiler: Sweet Miranda Tate orchestrated everything Bane did in the name of the League of Shadows, for she was Talia al Ghul]], in a monumental case of [[LyingCreator misdirection]] [[WordOfGod by]] MarionCotillard.
* TheDragon: [[spoiler:Bane, for Talia al Ghul.]]
* DropWhatYouAreDoing: At one point in the film, Bane collapses most of a football field in the middle of a game. A single player makes it to safety in the endzone, then looks back on the gaping hole in the ground, dropping the ball in shock.
* EarnYourHappyEnding: A fitting one [[BittersweetEnding even for so grim a saga]]: [[spoiler: With Batman believe to have perished in a blaze of heroism in detonating the nuclear bomb intended to decimate Gotham at sea, he is now honored for time immemorial as Gotham's champion, complete with statue. And Bruce, despite being nominally declared publicly to have died in the chaos, is spotted by Alfred in Italy living peacefully with Selina. Commissioner Gordon, in keeping his post, continues to keep order in Gotham. Finally, John Blake, having earned Batman's trust, is bequeathed the Batcave and is implied to take up the mantle, notwithstanding his real name of [[MythologyGag Robin]].]].
* EmbarrassingFirstName: The reason why John Blake goes by his middle name instead of his real first name: [[spoiler:[[MythologyGag Robin]]]].
* EverythingIsOnline: Catwoman remarks that "everything is collated and quantified. It sticks", in justification of wanting a "clean slate" computer program to wipe her criminal record clean.
* EvilBrit: How Bane has been reimagined.
* EvilGloating: A classic example of a villain gloating about the advantages of a slow, subtle revenge just long enough for the heroes to put a spoke in the evil plan. Batman lampshades it, remarking that a slightly faster revenge might have been in order.
* EvilSoundsDeep: Bane. His [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJ2OuDUw8gg French Canadian dub]] takes it past 11.
* FateWorseThanDeath: [[InvokedTrope Invoked]].
-->'''Batman:''' Why didn't you just... kill me?
-->'''Bane:''' Your punishment must be more ''severe''.
* FlyingCar: The Bat, à la the Batmobile from ''WesternAnimation/BatmanBeyond'' or the more standard [[CoolPlane Batwing]].
** Later [[DefiedTrope defied]]:
--->'''Catwoman:''' My mother warned me about getting into cars with strange men.
--->'''Batman:''' This isn't a car.
* ForcedToWatch: Bane wants Batman to know Gotham has been burned to the ground before he'll let Bruce be offed.
-->'''Bane''': When Gotham is ashes, you have my permission to die.
* FromNobodyToNightmare: Bane asserts, "Nobody cared who I was until I put on the mask."
* GeniusBruiser: Bane. This is accurate to the comics, and a marked contrast to most adaptations which portray him as DumbMuscle. See [[NeverLiveItDown/ComicBooks the relevant page]] for more.
* GloryHound: The first thing that came to Deputy Commissioner Peter Foley's mind when Batman re-emerges to take down Bane's mooks was to capture him "and do what Gordon wasn't able to do," even while Detective John Blake points out that [[WhatTheHellHero they're still chasing Bane's men]].
* HandicappedBadass: Bane has been re-imagined as one of these. After receiving a serious injury in his backstory, he gets through the pain by wearing a mask that constantly supplies him with anesthetic gas.
* [[spoiler: HeroicSacrifice]]: [[spoiler: Very heavily subverted. While Batman is believed to have perished in his epic attempt to detonate the nuclear bomb away in the ocean with the Bat, Alfred gets to see [[EarnYourHappyEnding Bruce Wayne alive and happy on a date with Selina]] in his annual ritual vacation in Italy.]]
* HesBack: The Batman returns after 8 years in exile to save Gotham once more.
* HiddenVillain: [[spoiler:Talia al Ghul]].
* HighAltitudeInterrogation: To gain information on Bane, a CIA operative interrogates his mooks by threatening to throw them out the open door of a plane in mid-flight.
* HoldingOutForAHero: Subverted at last. Though they needed heroes like Harvey Dent and Batman to get them there, crime in Gotham has ground to a standstill thanks to better policing and new laws like the Dent Act.
* HollywoodHealing: Averted, as seen when Bruce visits a doctor:
-->'''Doctor:''' There is no cartilage in your knee. Scar tissue on your kidneys, percussive damage to your brain tissue... I cannot recommend that [[ConvenientlyUnverifiableCoverStory you go heli-skiing]].
* IronicEcho: ''"...then you have my permission to die."'' Well-publicized as Bane's [[BadassBoast putdown to a defeated Batman]], [[spoiler: Batman retorts this after disabling Bane's mask and anesthetic, paralyzing him]].
* JustBetweenYouAndMe: Bane explains his entire [[DeathFakedForYou escape plan]] to the CIA agents while captured. Justified, as he knew they wouldn't live long enough to tell anyone about it.
** After Batman was momentarily stabbed by [[spoiler: [[TheDogWasTheMastermind Miranda, turning out to be Talia al Ghul]], she expounds how even with his triumphant return, the League of Shadows shall accomplish destroying Gotham this time]].
* KangarooCourt: [[spoiler: The Scarecrow]] is the judge.
* LeeroyJenkins: When Batman [[spoiler: succesfully returns to Gotham after being thrown into prison]], the [[spoiler: recently-marooned, weakened and liberated]] Gotham Police Force, together with a formerly-hesitant Deputy Commissioner Foley, chose to take Bane's mercenaries in a head-on collision immediately. Crosses into [[spoiler: HeroicSacrifice when most of them, including Foley, were mowed down by some mercenaries and the Tumblers commandeered by Talia al Ghul]].
* {{Leitmotif}}:
** Bane's theme, ''Gotham's Reckoning''.
** Catwoman's ''Mind If I Cut In?''.
* MasqueradeBall: One takes place early in the film, with Bruce Wayne, Miranda Tate and Selina Kyle in attendance.
* MeaningfulEcho: Businessman John Daggett asks Bane [[spoiler: who he was funding on a ploy to wrest Wayne Enterprises from Bruce]] the same question Carmine Falcone asked Batman almost a decade earlier.
-->'''[[CorruptCorporateExecutive John Daggett]]:''' What are you?
-->'''Bane:''' I'm [[ShadowArchetype Gotham's reckoning]].
* [[spoiler:MushroomCloud]]: Batman flies The Bat [[spoiler: out to sea, carrying the reactor core bomb beneath it. It explodes in a spectacular mushroom cloud over the ocean.]]
* MythologyGag:
** The "R" in the cheer sign at the football game Bane targets is the logo of Red Robin.
** Upon seeing Batman's return to action, an older cop in a cruiser excitedly tells his younger partner that they're "in for a hell of a show tonight", mirroring a scene from ''ComicBook/TheDarkKnightReturns''.
** Bruce Wayne looks up old newspagper clippings about Catwoman's escapades: they give her the nickname "The Cat", which was what Catwoman was known as in her earliest comic book appearances.
** A crack is made about Jim Gordon seeing "alligators in the sewer", a nod to Killer Croc.
** The crooked businessman who wants to absorb Wayne Enterprises is known as "John Daggett", a nod to "Roland Daggett" from ''WesternAnimation/BatmanTheAnimatedSeries''.
** Surprisingly enough, Bane's relationship to the League of Shadows was played around with: [[spoiler: he was saved by Ra's al Ghul and trained, and is actually in UnholyMatrimony with Miranda/Talia al Ghul]]. This references the comics where Ra's was once considering Bane to become his heir, [[spoiler: although here, he [[OverprotectiveDad disapproves of Bane's affection to Talia]].]]
** And then there's Bruce, who has accumulated such a number of injuries in his crimefighting career as to require a cane to get around. Arguably, this could be a nod to his character's depiction on ''WesternAnimation/BatmanBeyond''.
* NeckSnap: Bane is very fond of doing this.
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: Bane completely and utterly destroys Batman in their first encounter.
* NoPlansNoPrototypeNoBackup: Averted. After the first Tumbler was destroyed in the previous film, a number of replacements have been built. Unfortunately, Bane got his hands on at least a few of them.
* NotSoDifferent / {{Foil}}: Keeping in line with the saga's most salient themes, Batman's supporting characters have a lot of things in common with him while putting them in friction with him:
** Bane is famed to have been trained by the League of Shadows, apparently by Ra's al Ghul himself like Bruce/Batman (even proclaimed by the former as he [[CurbStompBattle utterly trashes Batman]]). [[spoiler: Moreover, he actually had a more heroic streak in him in the beginning by [[FriendToAllChildren helping the young Talia al Ghul]] escape the prison pit.]]
** Invoked by Officer/Detective John Blake himself [[spoiler: in confronting Bruce Wayne and revealing he knows that he is Batman]]. Having lost his parents at a young age and forced to keep up civil appearances "like a mask," he rebukes Bruce's [[WhatTheHellHero isolating himself from the world and inadvertently causing ill by "missing" the details]]. This elevates him into one of of Batman's allies and [[spoiler: the heir to his Batman persona and armory]].
** While Selina Kyle/Catwoman believes she is far above the pettiness of Bruce Wayne, she found a kindred spirit in Batman's honor and desire to give everyone in Gotham a fresh start. [[spoiler: This ropes her into helping him out in the retaking of Gotham from Bane... and actually dreaming to be with him]].
--> ''(after she successfully [[spoiler: dismantles the blockade out of Gotham]])''
--> '''''Selina/Catwoman''' (to Batman): [[spoiler: "I know. We're both suckers." (pulls him in [[BigDamnKiss for a real good smooch]])]]''
** Finally, [[spoiler: Talia al Ghul expresses how she is as driven by the death of her father Ra's to complete his destiny of destroying Gotham as per the mandate of the League of Shadows]], in the same way Batman is driven to fight crime via the death of his parents.
* OldCopYoungCop: Commissioner Gordon and Officer (later Detective) John Blake.
** There were also [[ThoseTwoGuys those two cops]] who were among the first to witness Batman's return to action after 8 years.
* OminousLatinChanting: "Deshi Basara", Bane's thematic chant, although it's not Latin, but Moroccan Arabic meaning "He Rises". [[spoiler:Justified - Used as a sort of ritual chant when one attempts to escape the prison.]]
* OnceMoreWithClarity: Bane was born in a hellish prison and escaped it by climbing a well when he was a kid, right? [[spoiler:Wrong. It was Talia. The flashbacks in the climax make it clear, and that Bane was a guard who assisted her escape.]]
* OneWomanWail: When Batman [[spoiler: flies The Bat out to sea with the bomb hanging under it.]]
** The Boy Soprano variant is used by the boy who sings "The Star-Spangled Banner" before the football game.
* [[OutrunTheFireball Outrun The Exploding Floor]]: The football player ([[RealPersonCameo played by Hines Ward]]) does this when the field blows up behind him.
* [[ParentalBetrayal Surrogate Parental Betrayal]]: Bruce coldly but angrily [[spoiler: reproaches Alfred when the latter finally revealed that Rachel chose Harvey over him, and that he kept it all these years, in a vain attempt to dissuade Bruce from becoming Batman one last time]].
* [[spoiler: PassingTheTorch]]: It is hinted that [[spoiler: John Blake inherits the mantle of Batman from Bruce Wayne more than becoming a sidekick, even though he uses the name "Robin" once.]]
* PrisonsAreGymnasiums: A heroic example with [[spoiler:Bruce Wayne doing push-ups to get back in Batman shape while imprisoned.]]
* ProductPlacement: Delta Airways, [=OshKosh=], Bentley, Lamborghini and Sak's Fifth Avenue.
** The "Heinz" signage on the facade of Heinz Field can be briefly glimpsed.
* PromotedFanboy: Thanks to an online competition run by Hans Zimmer and UJAM, thousands of lucky fans will be doing the OminousLatinChanting in the final cut of the film.
** In-universe of the film, [[spoiler: Detective John Blake, who has deduced Bruce is Batman and proclaimed his admiration of his past work to his face, became [[AndTheAdventureContinues heir to Batman's identity and armory]] at the denouement of ''Rises'']].
* RedHerring: Promotional material for the film all hints toward [[spoiler: Bane]] as the film's BigBad. [[spoiler: It's actually Talia al Ghul.]]
* ReluctantMadScientist: Dr. Pavel wants nothing to do with Bane, attempting to make a deal with the CIA instead. Bane has other plans...
* RetiredBadass: Bruce Wayne, who's hung up the cowl for 8 whole years.
* RippedFromTheHeadlines: Even though writing and production took place well in advance of the headlines in question, a very common reaction to the promotional material is that Bane and Catwoman sound like they're organising the Occupy Gotham movement. Nolan even thought about filming footage of the Occupy protests for ''Rises'', but ended up not doing so.
* StealthHiBye: Catwoman performs one on Batman, who remarks "so that's what it feels like".
* AStormIsComing: Said by Selina Kyle to Bruce Wayne at the MasqueradeBall.
* TagLine: ''The Fire Rises'' and ''The Legend Ends''.
* TemptingFate: Gotham's mayor plans to fire Gordon, given the decorated hero cop who made his name fighting crazed terrorists isn't really necessary in the now-peaceful climate. He even swaggers into a sports stadium to watch the Gotham Rogues play, seated in his VIP box. Then Bane shows up... [[spoiler: blows the field and blows the Mayor's viewing box]].
* TheseHandsHaveKilled: John Blake's reaction after taking out some thugs [[spoiler: while attempting to save the police force marooned underground]].
* TimeSkip: ''Rises'' takes place eight years after ''Dark Knight''.
* TrojanPrisoner: Bane allows himself to be captured so he can find out exactly who Dr. Pavel made a deal with instead of him.
* {{Tuckerization}}: At the football game, the visiting team's kicker bears the name Ravenstahl, after current Mayor of {{Pittsburgh}} Luke Ravenstahl. The majority of filming for ''Rises'' was done in Pittsburgh.
** The surviving home player in the end zone is real life Steelers player Hines Ward who was one of many current and former Steelers players involved in the filming. Steelers coach, Bill Cowher, even makes an appearance as the Gotham Rogues' team coach.
* UndyingLoyalty: Bane's underlings appear fanatically loyal to him. For instance, when he tells one of his mooks to remain on a crashing plane in order to fool the authorities[[note]]who are expecting to also find the body of a prisoner in the wreckage[[/note]], the mook simply nods happily... and asks an ominous question.
-->'''Mook''': Have we started the fire?\\
'''Bane''': ''The fire rises''.
** Ultimately, [[spoiler: it was established Bane has this for Miranda Tate/Talia al Ghul.]]
* WhamLine: When Bane first comes face-to-face with Batman:
