There is little consistency in Fanon canon, with the same troll having portrayed as a beggar, a biologist, and a petty criminal in separate works. Usually, the stories take place in Alternia City, a metropolis with sizable Troll, Human, Consort, and Carapace populations. Usually, the Homestuck canon's Woobie is a criminal mastermind with a copy of the EvilOverlordList, Vriska is a DirtyCop, and Rose is in charge of her very own Wiki/SCPFoundation pastiche. There are, however, two very different and distinct "mainstream" canons: the RP canon on Website/DeviantArt and the general fanfic canon on the forums.

Misuse of FMB, since there are more than 5 members each.

* FiveManBand: The cops are this, although the order shuffles over time.
** Right after Sollux and Aradia join the force, we have:
*** TheLeader: Terezi Pyrope, the veteran who loves justice above all else
*** TheLancer: Vriska Serket, a darker and less scrupulous Foil for her partner Terezi
*** TheBigGuy: Equius Zahhak, obviously
*** TheSmartGuy: Sollux Captor, a psiioniic with a knack for computers
*** TheChick: Aradia Megido, the idealistic new girl
*** ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Commissioner AR and Mayor WV. Ditzy, yes, but never unreasonable
** After Aradia's death and resurrection as Aradiabot
*** TheLeader: Still Terezi
*** TheLancer: Terezi's new partner Sollux
*** TheBigGuy: This will always be Equius
*** TheSmartGuy[=/=]TokenEvilTeammate: The dispatch officer, Vriska, in all her corrupt, manipul8ive glory
*** TheChick: Still Aradia, because nothing else really fits
*** ReasonableAuthorityFigure: AR and WV.
** Over time, Aradia and Vriska switch roles as Vriska undergoes Chickification after

* MobWar: A six-way free-for-all between the Midnight Crew, the Felt, Mr. Pupa's organization (including the Karkat Gang), the Strider Mafia, the Kingpin Mob, and the Mindfang Pirates (before they're assimilated into Pupa's organization). [[spoiler:The fallout from the events of "Would You Kindly?" adds the Carcino Gang after they survive Pupa turning on them and decide to set themselves up as an independent group.]]

Added DiffLines:

* FriendlyEnemy: Sollux and Terezi versus the Karkat Gang. They're on opposite sides of the law, but are on fairly good personal terms despite this. Notable examples include Terezi dropping the chase to get Nepeta medical help in "One For Sorrow", and Nepeta in turn choosing Sollux and Terezi to be the first people outside the gang to hear about her becoming an OfficialCouple with Karkat in "Routine".

Added DiffLines:

* CollidingCriminalConspiracies: All over the place, a consequence of Alternia City being home to no fewer than six major criminal organizations. Complicating things further is the fact that two of those aren't shy about tossing the TimeyWimeyBall around.

Added DiffLines:

* ObfuscatingDisability: The Nefarious and Notorious Mr Pupa uses his wheelchair to lull his enemies into a false sense of security before making a getaway on his robotic legs. In a twist on the trope, his disability used to be genuine, before the secret operation that gave him the aforementioned robotic legs.
