* MundaneMadeAwesome: While the visual displays of the skating routines from the show are lost in text, the author manages to more than compensate for the lack of visuals. However, on the AO3 version of the story, there are many occasions (especially towards the NHK-and-beyond parts of the fic) where high-quality artwork has been rendered and embedded into the fic.

* NamedInTheAdaptation: The girl who hugged Yuri in Detroit is introduced as Celeste. A few of Victor's unnamed past girlfriends are also mentioned, with one making an appearance in the story.

* AbuseMistake: Played for laughs in Chapter 233. Phichit thinks that Victor might be abusing Yuri after seeing scratch marks on Victor's back while the couple are sitting in the onsen. Yuri blushes furiously from embarassment as he explains that their relationship is perfectly healty and consensual, sex just got a little rough one night when they were drunk back in Chapter 220.

* AdaptationalAngstUpgrade: The fic gives Victor a heartbreakingly tragic backstory.

* BreatherEpisode: Despite the explicitness of the scenes, surprisingly, any chapter where Yuri and Victor have sex usually ends up serving as one of these because it gives readers a break from the drama.

** Yurio's comment at the RSF press conference in Chapter 10 about how much more homoerotic wrestling is compared to figure skating comes back more than 220 chapter later when Mikhail reveals that his son Sergio participates in the sport.
