!!Tropes associated with Lionel Barrymore:

* CoolOldGuy: Later in his career, and especially after arthritis and other medical problems left him in a wheelchair, he was usually playing kindly grandpas and wisecracking old folks (at least when he wasn't playing a crotchety doctor in the ''Dr. Kildare'' series).

Barrymore played a fairly wide variety of roles when he was younger, both heroes and villains, but in his later years became somewhat typecast as kindly grandpas. His most famous role, as evil Mr. Potter in ''Film/ItsAWonderfulLife'', was thus a PlayingAgainstType triumph.

A broken hip and chronic arthritis left Barrymore in a wheelchair in his later years; [[DisabledCharacterDisabledActor this was written into several of his film parts]]. He died of a heart attack in 1954.
