Aversions are not to be listed. Hiding Zero Context Example. If Pokemon Go is any indication, the franchise's popularity extends far beyond just the geek demographic. Deleting shoehorned examples. Berserk Button is an abnormally negative reaction to something mundane; a cheating partner is something that would leave any normal person enraged.

* LogicalWeakness: In the cartoon, Cornelia's powers heavily depend on a pre-existing source of earth, since she is the only guardian who cannot generate her own element at will. In "N is for Narcissist", she outright tells her friends that she can do nothing to help since the current arena has no soil for her to manipulate. In "V is for Victory", Cornelia's only contribution in the main battle is to cover her opponent in algae, reasoning that, since they are fighting above a pool, she has to "work with what (she) has".

The group consists of five teenage girls who were chosen by the Oracle to become the new guardians of Kandrakar, which means they protect Kandrakar from people and creatures who wish to cause harm to it. For this purpose, they have been given powers over the five elements; Energy, Water, Fire, Earth and Air. The guardians' names are: Will, Irma, Taranee, Cornelia and Hay Lin, whose initials form the title acronym W.I.T.C.H.
----
* {{Action Girl}}s: Even when they're not in Guardian form.
* AmazonBrigade: In their transformed state, where they all possess super-powers.
* BadassAdorable: They're all {{Adorkable}} cuties protecting the worlds.
* BadassCrew: They are the Guardians of the Veil and know how to kick ass.
* BadassFamily: While they aren't related, they do consider one another like family.
* BadassTeacher: Only in the comics. They temporarily become teachers to other kids with magical abilities in the eighth saga.
* BlondeBrunetteRedhead: Cornelia (Blonde); Irma, Taranee, and Hay Lin (Brunette); Will (Redhead).
* BullyHunter: Initially it was only Will and Cornelia, but the others became involved in keeping Uriah and co. at bay pretty soon.
* ByThePowerOfGreyskull: “Guardians, unite!” Said by Will when she holds the Heart of Kandrakar, right before they transform.
* CallingYourAttacks: The girls usually call out the name of their element whenever they use them to attack.
* CovertPervert: Too many instances to list. Just go to the [[Radar/{{WITCH}} Radar]] subpage and remember it's not even half of what they've done.
* CustomUniformOfSexy: The Guardian outfits only have in common the wings, purple shoes, leggings striped in two shades of green, and tops and bottoms being coloured either aqua green or purple (pink in the cartoon), plus exposed stomach for the first outfits and some kind of gloves in the New Power outfits. Everything else is different... And the end result is ''always'' sexy.
* ADayInTheLimelight: They each get their own personal story in Lene Kaaberbøl's novels.
* DeadpanSnarker: They all have their moments with Irma as the most sarcastic and Hay Lin as the least.
* DudeMagnet: All of them have caught the attention of more than one guy.
* EvilTwin: Has happened about three times:
** "The Mogriffs" had the girls being impersonated by scapegoating and vicious creatures called, "Mogriffs". They were summoned by Phobos to trick his sister into thinking they wanted to hurt them.
** "I is for Illusion" had Nerissa pretending to be each of the girls in order to shatter the bond between them.
** "P is for Protectors" Nerissa again pretended to be the girls in order for Kadma to not trust them.
* {{Flight}}: When they transform. Initially in the comic, only Hay Lin could fly, but they all get this ability in the New Power arc.
* FiveTokenBand: Will is AmbiguouslyBrown, Irma and Cornelia are Caucasian, Taranee is African-American and Hay Lin is Asian.
* GirlPosse: Amazingly enough, the group started (before Elyon left and Will and Taranee arrived) as the closest thing [[LovableAlphaBitch Cornelia]] had to one. Closest thing because, just as Cornelia wasn't an AlphaBitch, the girls were true friends with their own opinions and the only ones to care about fashion were Hay Lin (who makes her own clothes) and Cornelia.
* HealingFactor: In the comic they have "Xing-Jing's Gift", that allows them to heal faster than usual, not feel the fatigue from the transformation, and over time healed Taranee's sight.
* KidHero They start off at the ages of 12 and 13.
* LegacyTeam: W.I.T.C.H. are simply the most recent team to take up the mantle of Guardians of the Veil.
* MagicalGirlWarrior: A prominent non-anime example.
* MakeMeWannaShout: How they defeat the White Queen.
* NiceGirl: Despite some of their flaws, all of the girls are brave, loyal, and will fight against anyone who does wrong: Be it either human bullies or more superhuman versions of bullies.
* OlderAlterEgo: The Guardian forms.
* OneDegreeOfSeparation: Well before ever meeting each other they were connected through the previous generation of Guardians, as Yan Lin personally knew three of them and Kadma and Halinor were keeping tabs on Will and Taranee through the people helped by their charity.
* PersonalityPowers: Yan Lin explains they all have personality powers: Irma got water because it can't be contained (like Irma when she decides to do something), Taranee got fire because she's the only one reliable enough to be trusted with it (as Cedric points out once, when Taranee gets pissed you must RUN. And he did so), Cornelia got Earth because she tends to function with hard logic, and Hay Lin got Air because she's a dreamer. Will's power remains unexplained until the New Power saga of the comic, when her 'Energy' power is finally defined as that which unites the elements and leads them, balancing between their different personalities. Will fits this archetype after her character develops.
* PhysicalGoddess: Where Will, as the Keeper of the Heart, had the potential from the start, the whole group reaches this level in the New Power arc, as shown when Hay Lin ''picked an hurricane and closed it in a small paper box''.
* PowerGivesYouWings: In the comic [[WingsDoNothing the wings were useless]] (except with Hay Lin) until the New Power arc. In the Arkhanta arc they even [[LampshadeHanging admitted they had no idea why they had wings]].
* PowerOfFriendship: {{Justified|Trope}}. The stronger the bond between the Guardians, the stronger they are when fighting evil. A recurring theme in the comics and show.
* PowerPerversionPotential: Irma (in the comic book) and Cornelia (in the cartoon) have both noticed how their Guardian forms are useful to get noticed by older boys.
* PurpleIsPowerful: Their Guardian uniforms, though they look more pink in the animated series.
* SexierAlterEgo: In Guardian form they don't just become older, they get the body they dream of. Made most evident by Will's ''actual'' older form (shown in two possible futures) being less busty than the Guardian form, Irma's Guardian form being skinnier than the actual Irma, and the Guardian form of Cornelia, who is the one who is actually happy with her body shape, simply being an OlderAlterEgo with RapunzelHair and wings.
* ShesGotLegs: Their outfits emphatize their shapely legs in different ways.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: While a few of them fall under AllGirlsWantBadBoys, ''all'' of them really want a sweet guy to be with ultimately.
* TeensAreShort: Downplayed. Each of them are short, but that's probably because of puberty.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl:
** The tomboyish but doubtful leader Will is often contrasted against [[TheLancer lancer]] Cornelia, the LovableAlphaBitch.
** Serious and elegant Cornelia is often paired against laid-back and funny Irma.
* TownGirls: Femme - Cornelia, Neither - Will, Taranee and Hay Lin, Butch - Irma.
* TrueCompanions: Even when they fight, that won't stop them from making up later on.
* UnderestimatingBadassery: Many of their enemies tend to underestimate the girls. Big mistake.
* WakeUpGoToSchoolSaveTheWorld: Mildly [[DeconstructedTrope Deconstructed]]; all of their personal lives suffer for their Guardianship, especially Will and Cornelia. The former has to deal with leadership and the trials of having a single parent while Cornelia has had to sacrifice time from her figure-skating career to save the world. Taranee actually quit at one point because she didn't like the way Candracar treated them and Cornelia has repeatedly shown she'd drop the job if she didn't feel indebted to help the others. Irma and Hay Lin have the least conflicts but even they have their share of problems. Despite these troubles, [[{{Reconstruction}} they still pull together and get the job done while handling their personal lives]].
* WingsDoNothing: Initially their wings are useless in the comics.

[[folder:Wilhelmina/Wilma "Will" Vandom]]
[[quoteright:305:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/will_vandom1.jpg]]

->Voiced by: Kelly Stables
->And, uh, lightning!

The Quintessence Guardian, and the main protagonist. She holds the Heart of Kandrakar, which gives the other girls the power to transform into their guardian forms.
----
* ACupAngst: She's insecure about her lack of a noticeable bust and prefers being in her Guardian form due to the BreastExpansion it gives her.
* AdaptationDyeJob: In the comics, Will's eyes were brown, but become ''red'' in the cartoon.
* AdaptationNameChange: A minor note. In the comics, her full name was "Wilhelmina". In the cartoon, it's never outright confirmed, but is implied to be "Wilma" instead.
* AdaptationalSuperpowerChange: In the comics, Will's element was "absolute energy" which manifested itself in hot-pink blasts and shields. She also possessed empathy with animals and could turn herself invisible[[note]]All five Guardians could do this in the comics whereas in the show only Hay Lin could do it.[[/note]] In the show, Will's power is '''Quintessence''' which allows her to control electricity and communicate with machines.
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: The comics showed that Will's friends from Fadden Hills only hung out with her because they felt sorry for her due to her parents being divorced. They didn't even like her. It was never shown if this happened to the cartoon Will. One of her enemies tried to trick her into thinking this would eventually happen with the other Guardians, but the Oracle assured her that even ''he'' could not see what the future would be.
* AmbiguouslyBrown: She's on the slightly dark shade of DarkSkinnedRedhead.
* AnimalMotifs: Frogs. Will has a ''passion'' for the species is so great to be one of her defining characteristics, and its appearances have become a running gag. Her room is covered in stuffed frog toys and her bed has a frog styled on top it. In her provided image picture, she is seen with what appears to be a frog wallet. And in the cartoon episode, "Will's Birthday", her friends throw her a frog-themed birthday party.
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: WordOfGod states that she's the strongest of the five because she has control over Quintessence.
* BadassInCharge: The leader of the Guardians and the most powerful of all of them. Inverted in season one of the show as she had no offensive powers, played straight in season two when she gets [[LightningCanDoAnything Quintessence]].
* BadassNormal: In season 1, but in season 2, not anymore since she gets her Quintessence powers. Averted in the comic, where she has those powers from the start.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Sweet, shy, not entirely confident girl. She will mess you up if you harm or threaten her inner circle, believe it. Case in point: her treatment of [[spoiler: Phobos]] in the fourth story arc. After he gave her an hell of a MindRape, she reacted by nearly ''torturing him to death'', and only spared him because she remembered just in time that [[spoiler: [[FreakyFridayFlip he wasn't in his real body]] and had to fix that situation]]. He escapes, but in their next encounter he finds himself at her mercy and has barely enough time for a BigNo before she ''[[DeaderThanDead disintegrates his soul]]''. Ouch...
* BookDumb: Especially math. A "C" grade is pretty good for her, according to Hay Lin.
* BullyHunter: Most evident in the comic; when seeing Uriah and his gang tormenting a dormouse she chased them away, and when she thought they had returned she immediately turned violent ([[MeetCute it was actually Matt]]). She and Cornelia will later involve their friends in the activity of keeping Uriah and co. from tormenting people.
* TheChainsOfCommanding: A recurring theme in both the comic and the show is that Will has the extra burdens of being the Keeper of the Heart in addition to the usual Guardian duties. This becomes more manageable over time as the girls become a stronger team.
* CharacterDevelopment:
** From the TV series -- By season 2, Will was able ''[[spoiler:to effortlessly manipulate Phobos]]''. She has even has tone down a lot of her HotBlooded tendencies.
** From the comics -- Will finally finding out how much of a jerk her father is, is what starts her not being so angry at her mother anymore and their relationship improves.
* CharacterTics: In the cartoon, Will blows up her hair in frustration.
* TheChessmaster: Has a stint in the second season of the cartoon, and actually succeeded at [[spoiler: playing Phobos like a fiddle]]. If only [[spoiler: Cedric]] hadn't seen that coming and decided to try his luck as the conqueror of the world...
* ClingyJealousGirl: She's ''really'' jealous of Matt, causing her to use her powers to sabotage perceived rivals or [[SugarWiki/FunnyMoments throw cakes on their heads directly from Kandrakar]].
* ClosetGeek: If the European opening is to be believed, Will has [[VideoGame/PokemonRubyAndSapphire the Hoenn starters]] as her bedroom wallpaper.
* CoolBigSis: To William, her half-brother. She was a little hesitant about him at first, but quickly bonds with him after he is born.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: In the animated series. ''Usually'' not RedEyesTakeWarning, but if you hit her BerserkButton enough...
* DarkSkinnedRedHead: Lighter-skinned than most examples, but she fits.
* DeadpanSnarker: More on the deadpan side.
* ElementNumberFive: Quintessence in the show, pretty much the same thing but used as LifeEnergy and ShockAndAwe.
* EmbarrassingNickname: The cartoon reveals that her mother calls her, "Pink Perky Poopy Pumpkin".
* EveryoneHatesMathematics: Her worst subject is math.
* {{Fangirl}}: Of Cobalt Blue.
* FieryRedhead: Can be emotional at times and prone to outbursts. Ironically, she seems to have inherited this from her responsible dark-haired mother than her calmer, but less reliable red-haired father.
* FriendlessBackground: In the comic she came to Heatherfield after effectively losing almost all her old friends when her parents divorced (she just kept ''one'', but that is revealed much later).
* FriendToAllLivingThings: Her powers give her a strong connection to animals.
* AGirlAndHerX: A Girl And Her Dormouse. More so in the comics, until he dies. Only for a short time in the cartoon.
* {{Glamour}}: She has this ability, and has occasionally used it for disguising purpose.
* HeartIsAnAwesomePower: But in the second season she gains [[ShockAndAwe lightning]] and technopathic skills. Plus, the show Guardians can only transform when Will uses the Heart of [=KandraKar=].
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Shown more in the comics. Will often has doubts over her physical appearance, and has said on more than one occasion that she doesn't consider herself beautiful.
* HotBlooded: Prone to being emotional than rational.
* ImprobableAimingSkills: She still has to miss a target, but the best (and [[SugarWiki/FunnyMoments funniest]]) instance was when she saw a girl who was hitting on Matt while she was away and [[ClingyJealousGirl hit her with a cake thrown from Kandrakar]], after [[LampshadeHanging remarking she had a good aim]] when Irma doubted her ability to pull it off.
* TheLeader: She's the Keeper of the Heart, and therefore the leader of the Guardians.
* LethalChef: Her mother and Matt are terrified by her attempts at cooking because she's as bad as [[Manga/RanmaOneHalf Akane Tendo]] in her first attempts. Or maybe worse: Akane never confused powdered soap with flour...
* LightningCanDoAnything: In its most basic form, the Quintessence power just shoots lightning. But it can also animate nonliving things, bring life to technology, giving them their own personalities, turn astral drops into real, living beings, and quite a few other things.
* MamaBear: She doesn't take threats against her little brother very well. At all.
* MeaningfulName:
** Wilhelmina can be interpreted to mean "protector."
** Will also counts. There's even a villain who claimed that fifth element is willpower.
* MixedAncestry: Her father is white and her mother is a still, unspecified ethnicity. Fanon likes to see her as being Middle Eastern.
* {{Mondegreen}}: Prior to the point where Will's element in the TransformationSequence became "quintessence", it was variously heard as "it worked", "big hook", and various other odd phrases. Closed captioning programs had particular difficulty with it. It's changed so that it's audible as "the heart" eventually.
* NakedOnArrival: In the comic, the first page featuring Will sees her in a [[DreamingOfThingsToCome dream]] where she is trapped inside the Heart of Kandrakar, bursts out of it and into a raging storm. She's naked throughout the entire sequence.
* NamesTheSame: InUniverse. As her half-brother William, at least in their shortened versions. This led to amusing results when everyone got them mixed up at a family reunion.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: It was her decision not to tell Elyon that the girls were Guardians and Elyon was the lost princess of Meridian, which ultimately allowed Phobos to manipulate Elyon for half the season after telling her the truth and showing her that her friends had been keeping secrets/lying. Cornelia gave her quite a bit of crap over it.
* NotAMorningPerson: Frequently in the comics and the supplementary materials mention it, too. Not as much in the show, but the European opening shows her being awoke by her alarm and immediately falling back into bed.
* NotSoDifferent: With Nerissa. Both are willing to do whatever it takes to achieve their goals, even if it's morally wrong (especially in regards to Nerissa).
* PaintedOnPants: Her Guardian outfit from the New Power saga includes these.
* PassionateSportsGirl: She's into competitive swimming.
* PinkHeroine: She wears a combination of pink and red, wields the pink Heart of Kandrakar, has a pink transformation sequence, and gains the power of pink lightning.
* PureEnergy: Her power source in the comics.
* RedHeadedStepchild: To Dean in the comics. To Serena in the TV series. Subverted in that they both actually care about her and don't treat her like the trope, in the show she treats them with distrust until she warms up to them with one issue of the comics being about her [[SugarWiki/HeartwarmingMoments finally calling Dean "Dad!"]]
* RefusalOfTheCall: At first rejects the idea of being a Guardian, but later accepts it.
* SheCleansUpNicely: Usually prefers gender-neutral clothing, but she can dress up as easily as any of the other girls.
* ShockAndAwe: Cartoon only. In season two, Will is finally granted her own elemental ability of Quintessence (also referred to as Aether). Quintessence manifests itself in whitish blue lightning, which she can use to animate inanimate objects, fire offensive lightning bolts and produce a full body pulse, shockwave or discharge of electrical power and energy. In addition, her powers grant her the ability to talk to electrical appliances.
* ShrinkingViolet: Shows tendencies of this. However, she can be outspoken when she wants to be.
* SpiderSense:
** In the comicbooks, Will gets dizzy whenever something of dark magic is in motion or near her.
** Will was able to detect Nerissa's location in "F is for Facades", after the woman used her Quintessesnce powers.
* SuperStrength: One of her abilities includes superhuman strength.
* {{Technopath}}: Also has a strong connection to appliances.
* TeleportersAndTransporters: [[spoiler:By the end of the show she's the only member of W.I.T.C.H. that can do this, though it's justified as they were in a desperate enough situation for Will to risk using it without the years of training the technique usually requires.]] Caleb actually teaches her and the others how to do this in the comic.
* {{Tomboy}}: Enjoys sports (competitive swimming is her main interest) and frogs.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: The Tomboy to Cornelia' s Girly Girl.
* TomboyishName: {{Justified}} given how embarrassing her first name is.
* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: Will dresses casually, has messy hair, and is an active swimmer; but she has a passion for cute animals and crushes hard on the attractive Matt.
* TookALevelInBadass: In the first season of the show, she had a mostly passive participation in battles, with her key contribution being that she was the source of the girls' transformations. In season 2, she gains the ability to control electricity and control inanimate objects allowing her to be more active in fights.
* UnkemptBeauty: Her hair is the messiest of the Guardians and her boyfriend doesn't seem to mind in the least. There's a lot of scenes in the comics where Will is shown getting out of bed and her hair is a complete rat's nest... and she looks adorable.
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: She also doesn't take threats against her boyfriend well. At all. Shagon played this up in the animated series to make her hate him by insinuating he'd done something to Matt [[spoiler: which was true, FromACertainPointOfView]].
* VisitByDivorcedDad: In both the series and comic. [[spoiler: Played very darkly in the comics]].
* WhatKindOfLamePowerIsHeartAnyway: Averted in the comics as her power is PureEnergy, sort of played straight in the show as she has no offensive powers in the first season.
* YouAreGrounded: Seems to get this even more than the others, maybe because she's the only child of a single mother.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Irma Lair]]
[[quoteright:117:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/witch_irma_norm.jpg]]
->Voiced by: Creator/CandiMilo

The Water Guardian. Known for being the class clown at her school, she and Cornelia have a long-standing rivalry. She is close friends with Hay Lin. Despite displaying some jealousy over his friend Martin's girlfriend (who previously had a crush on her), she was starting a relationship with Joel, Matt's bandmate. Ultimately, she chose neither and is currently dating a new character named Stephen.
----
* AdaptationalCurves: In the comics, Irma was chubby. In the animated series, she's as skinny as her friends.
* AdaptationalSexuality: Creator/GregWeisman [[WordOfGay claims]] that the animated version of the character is a lesbian, and she noticeably lacks a romantic interest. The comic counterpart has a boyfriend, however, and even in the show Irma expresses clear interest in Andrew Hornby, which would [[BiTheWay make her bisexual rather than a lesbian]]. She could also be uncertain, as would be expected of a 13 to 15-year old.
* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: In the form of moody, punkish Andrew Hornby.
* BigBreastPride: Too bad the one girl she tries to get jealous is ProudBeauty Cornelia...
* BigEater: Sometimes in the comics and she does have a definite sweet-tooth.
* BigFun: Irma was slightly chubby in the comics, DependingOnTheArtist.
* BigOlEyebrows: Inherited thick eyebrows from her father.
* BigSisterInstinct: When Nerissa tricks Irma into thinking Will caused a stunt that could've gotten Chris hurt, Irma is genuinely angered.
* BookDumb: More from laziness than anything.
* BreakTheHaughty: Most seen in "G is for Garbage" and "L is for Loser", which makes her almost lose two of her friends.
* BrutalHonesty: Sometimes in the comic, which lands her in trouble in delicate situations.
* CharacterDevelopment: In the TV series, Irma is learning to control her temper and more negative attributes. And while she has a ways to go, she ''is'' making progress.
* CharmPerson: One of her powers is some kind of mind control.
* ClassClown: Irma loves to joke around in school.
* CoolBigSis: Though she thinks of her brother as an AnnoyingYoungerSibling, [[AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther she really does care for him]].
* CoolTeacher: A possible future shown in the comics is that she becomes this.
* DeadpanSnarker: Easily the snarkiest of the girls.
* EmbarrassingNickname: Her mother still calls her the nicknames she had when she was a baby.
* FunPersonified: The most willing to make her Guardian duty as fun as possible.
* GagBoobs: To the point of getting {{Lampshaded}} by the ''Italian advertisement of the comics and the official site''.
* GenkiGirl: She's quite excitable, but loses to Hay Lin.
* AGirlAndHerX: A Girl And Her Turtle. In the comics, Irma has a pet turtle, Leafy, who she tells all her secrets to.
* HairTriggerTemper: She has shown to have bad control over her temper in the TV series. On two occasions, it made her say some terrible things to her friends, Blunk and Martin. She learns to try and control it in "O is for Obedience".
* TheHeart: Sometimes [[{{ComicBook/WITCH}} in the comic book]].
* HotBlooded: Irma is probably worse than Will.
* AnIcePerson: Not in personality, but because she has control over water, Irma also has the ability to freeze (and unfreeze) anything she wants.
* ImprobableHairstyle: Her curls manages to stay up regardless what situation she's in.
* ItsAllAboutMe: Shows an egocentric attitude in "O is for Obedience", but seems to have gotten over it by the end.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Somewhat self-centered and sometimes speaks before thinking. But, is willing to admit her mistakes and has a noble heart.
* JumpedAtTheCall: Even more so in the show, Irma was the most psyched to be a Guardian.
* LifeOfTheParty: Knows how to throw a party.
* MakingASplash: Irma is the Guardian of Water.
* MissingMom: In the comics, Anna Lair is her stepmother. It's still a mystery of what happened to her birth mom.
* MostCommonSuperPower: ''Easily'' the largest of the girls in both her forms, at least in the comics.
* NoIndoorVoice: Irma might not know the definition of keeping her voice down.
* NotSoDifferent: With Cornelia. Both are stubborn and can be insensitive at times, but are [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold jerks with heart of gold]]. They also go through BreakTheHaughty moments in the cartoon version.
* ThePrankster: Her usual mindset is basically that of a {{Troll}}.
* QuirkyCurls: The tips at the end of her hair are curled.
* RapunzelHair: Her new costume gives her longer, curlier hair.
* ReallyGetsAround: A non-sexual version (thankfully) as she's had the most romances in the comics. Not at the same time, mind you.
* RelatedInTheAdaptation:
** Played straight with Anna. In the comics, she and Anna were step-parent/step-child, but are biological mother and daughter in the cartoon.
** Downplayed with Chris. They're still siblings in the cartoon, but now share the same mother unlike the comics.
* RedOniBlueOni: The red to Cornelia's blue.
* RelatedInTheAdaptation: In the comics, she and Anna were step-mother and step-daughter. The cartoon has them as biological mother and daughter.
* ShockJock: Known in the show as: "Lair on the Air"!
* SingleGirlSeeksMostPopularGuy: In the form of Andrew Hornby.
* SitcomArchnemesis: With Cornelia, whom she calls "Corny."
* SmittenTeenageGirl: Instantly goes "boy crazy" to the guy she likes.
* SnarkKnight: Makes sassy comments when she's on and off the job of being a Guardian. But, she'll ''always'' protect the world with her friends.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Irma's name is usually spelled "Erma".
* SpicyLatina: Never explicitly said in the comics but her fashion sense and accent in the cartoon (which she shares with her brother and mother) seem to hint at this.
* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: Irma loves junk food, has a crass sense of humor, and is a coach potato in regards to physical activity, but she also likes cute clothes, music, and crushes often on guys.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Irma loves to eat chocolate ice cream.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Cornelia.

[[folder:Taranee Cook]]
[[quoteright:150:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/150px-Taranee_6014.jpg]]
->Voiced by: Miss Kittie

The Fire Guardian, Taranee's hobbies include dancing, math, and photography. She later starts liking Nigel, a former delinquent.
----
* TenMinuteRetirement: In the comic, she gets increasingly frustrated with her life as a Guardian and comes to feel that she's being manipulated and used by the Oracle, and as such she quits the team, stays out of action and refuses to use her powers for several issues (though she still hangs out with the other girls and helps provide cover stories and alibies when needed). Her place on the team is temporarily filled by Orube, a warrior woman from the planet Basiliade, though the Oracle and the other girls make it clear to Taranee that she is welcome back on the team at any time.
* AdaptationPersonalityChange: While she was reserved in the comics, her cartoon counterpart became even nerdier, shyer, and a full-on NervousWreck.
* AffectionateNickname: Called "sugar plum" by her father in the cartoon.
* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: Mainly Nigel, though she insists he isn't the bad guy her mother thinks he is.
* AsianAndNerdy: She is half-Asian from her mother's side whom puts great focus on education. [[spoiler: Although Taranee is adopted and she might not be half-Asian at all]]
* BadassBookworm: She occasionally uses her smarts to defeat her enemies, especially in the show where [[ScienceHero her knowledge of science saves the day more than once]].
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Tends to become a pyromaniac when she snaps. Cedric was rather wary of provoking her since the start, but Elyon, in the first saga, managed to get her to snap, and only survived because Cedric grabbed her and ran like hell while she freed from a bubble made specifically to keep her in.
* BewareTheQuietOnes: The most reserved of her friends. But when she snaps, she snaps '''hard'''.
* BigOlEyebrows: Inherited her thick eyebrows from her dad.
* BlackAndNerdy: Taranee is so nerdy that she can't wait for summer vacations to end!
* BlackBestFriend: To Will, in particular.
* BraidsOfAction: In the DreadlockRasta version.
* BrainyBrunette: Well, maybe she's a "brainy blunette".
* CharacterDevelopment: Especially in the show where she starts out as timid and fearful and eventually becomes a bona-fide badass and a rebellious teenager.
* CowardlyLion: In the cartoon version. Taranee gets scared easily when doing her guardian duties. [[CharacterDevelopment She grows out of it]].
* DatingWhatDaddyHates: A mother variant. She didn't approve of Taranee dating Nigel. She comes around though.
* DeadpanSnarker: Not so much at first, but moreso as the series goes on.
* DreadlockRasta: Only in her Guardian form.
* DreadlockWarrior: In her guardian form.
* EveryGirlIsCuterWithHairDecs: She wears beads in her hair most of the time.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: The only one whose hair changes after transforming.
* FakeMixedRace: InUniverse. Taranee seems like this at first, since her mother is Asian. It's later revealed that she's [[spoiler:adopted]].
* GogglesDoNothing: After the [[HealingFactor Xing-Jing's Gift]] heals her sight in the comic she takes off the corrective lenses from her glasses and replaces them with plain ones, as just ditching her glasses would be suspicious.
* GoodGirlGoneBad: This is what her mother thinks when Taranee starts to date Nigel.
* GoodWithNumbers: Her favorite subject is mathematics.
* {{Goth}}: {{Invoked}} in the TV series. Her way of trying to not be a "good girl". Until Nigel tells her that's what he likes about her.
* HairDecorations: Moreso in the comics.
* HappilyAdopted: [[spoiler:The comics reveal that Taranee was adopted after a fire destroyed her biological parents' home and they couldn't care for her properly.]]
* HeroesWantRedheads: Her first love and boyfriend was Nigel Ashcroft, a redhead. In the comics they broke up, but in the TV series they remain together.
* IJustWantToBeSpecial: In "A is for Anonymous" she fears that no more Guardian life means she'll become an "anonymous wallflower" again. [[SugarWiki/HeartwarmingMoments Her best friends prove her wrong.]]
* InSeriesNickname: In the comics, her friends sometimes refer to her as "Tara".
* LovableNerd: She'd rather have school than summer vacation.
* MeaningfulName: Taranee ''Cook''.
* {{Meganekko}}: She even wears glasses after transforming!
* {{Nerd Action Hero}}ine: Taranee is the nerdiest girl of the group.
* NerdsAreSexy: She's a cute girl and has no problem attracting love interests. Her possible future selves are all in good shape due to her professions (dance instructor and runner). Her Guardian forms are ''definitely'' this, as she keeps her glasses in them.
* NumberTwo: Often becomes this when Will, for some reason, can't lead the group.
* OnlySaneWoman: Sometimes has to be this.
* PlayingWithFire: Taranee is the Guardian of Fire.
* PowerMakesYourHairGrow: In her Guardian form.
* TheQuietOne: The most reserved of her friends.
* ShrinkingViolet: Moreso in the cartoon adaption. Taranee is the most passive of the girls and starts off a nervous wreck. [[CharacterDevelopment She eventually learns to be more assertive.]]
* ShyBlueHairedGirl: She has blue-black hair and is a timid and reserved teenager.
* SpecsOfAwesome: Wears glasses even when kicking butt.
* {{Telepathy}}: One of her powers and the reason why the Guardians don't need telephones to talk between them.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Taranee isn't fond of bugs, except for butterflies, grasshoppers, and crickets.
* WreathedInFlames: Her zenith form as shown in "Z is for Zenith".
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: The only one with blue hair (though Hay Lin's hair is often described as black).
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Cornelia Hale]]
[[quoteright:150:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cornelia.gif]]
->Voiced by: Christel Khalil

The Earth Guardian, Cornelia is from a wealthy family and is easily one of the most popular girls at school. She enjoys figure skating. At first was head-over-heels for Caleb, but later on realized that they were [[JustFriends just friends]]. Later, she falls for Peter, Taranee's older brother. Averted in the cartoon, where she remains a couple with Caleb and Peter has no interest in her. Close friend with Will and best frenemy with Irma.
----
* TheAce: Seems like this at first: she's a beautiful blonde from a well-off family who's popular (the novelizations cite her as being one of the "Infielders" at Sheffield Institute) and a gifted figure-skater. Even her friends are a little jealous of her at times.
* AdaptationalJerkass: Cornelia is still a hero in the cartoon, but was more abrasive and rude, especially to the newcomer Will. [[CharacterDevelopment Thankfully,]] [[TookALevelInKindness she gets better.]]
* AdaptationPersonalityChange: Cornelia in the TV show, who is a [[ProudBeauty proud]] AlphaBitch bordering on ValleyGirl before undergoing CharacterDevelopment, is ''very'' different from Cornelia in the comics, who is a mature, [[TheOjou refined young lady]] [[SilkHidingSteel who is more firm than her appearance lets on.]]
* AgentScully: Doesn't believe in magic at first, and that's after about a year of strange events in her presence, effectively controlling everything that happens in her class with her will, [[MundaneUtility telekinetically cleaning her room]] without meaning, finding out that Irma can manipulate interrogations, ''seeing'' Taranee redirect a firework and stop an explosion and Yan Lin putting the Heart of Kandrakar in Will's hand, and only accepts they're doing magic after plants respond to her mood, but may have been in denial due [[IJustWantToBeNormal her preference for normality]].
* AlphaBitch: In the show. In the comics she started out as the LovableAlphaBitch.
* BattleCouple: With Caleb in the cartoon.
* BerserkButton: One of her pet peeves is [[YourCheatingHeart affairs of the heart]].
* BelligerentSexualTension: With Caleb in the cartoon.
* BigSisterBully: Cornelia could be a little meaner than she had to toward Lilian. [[spoiler: When it was revealed in "U is for Undivided" that Lilian was the Heart of Earth,]] Cornelia's attitude changed. By the end of the season 2 finale, Cornelia might have averted this trope.
* BigSisterInstinct: Even though she finds Lillian annoying, Cornelia is very protective of her sister. And Nerissa coming after her sister ''really'' pisses her off.
* BigSisterMentor: [[spoiler: She will become this to Lillian since she is the Heart of Earth, and Cornelia is the Earth Guradian.]]
* BrattyTeenageDaughter: More so in the cartoon and even then begins to grow out of it.
* BreakTheHaughty: Learned how her arrogant and selfish attitude almost made her suffer from them in the TV series, specifically in "F is for Facades" and "N is for Narcissist".
* BrokenAce: She is just as inexperienced in romance as the other girls and has major confidence issues when it comes to dating an older boy, at least at first. It's also shown she doesn't enjoy the spotlight as much as she thinks she would.
* BullyHunter: Her first encounter with Will (and possibly Taranee) in the comic has her chasing away a gang of bullies and it's implied that she does it often.
* ButtMonkey: In the TV show. If one of the guardians screws up, chances are Cornelia's the one hit in the face, or drenched in water, or otherwise screwed.
* CharacterDevelopment: In the TV series, she becomes nicer as the show goes on. In Season 2 especially she loses a lot of her narcissism, selfishness, and meanness.
* CoolBigSis: Downplayed. When she's not fighting or being a BigSisterBully with Lillian, Cornelia acts very sweet and friendly to her sister.
* TheCynic: For being the most grounded, she can also verge into being the most cynical.
* DeadpanSnarker: Often pointing out other people’s bad fashion tastes, as well as making jokes and sarcastic remarks.
* DefrostingIceQueen: Especially in the show.
* DishingOutDirt: The Guardian of Earth.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Her first appearance in the comic: in quick succession she muses that Irma unwittingly using magic to make sure the teachers only ask her what she has studied is something for beginners, makes an annoyed face as she asks who is the girl that Hay Lin just saluted (it's Taranee, who is at her first day at school), admits that Elyon knows more about the other transfer student (Will, who is in their class), leaves Elyon (her best friend) at the mercy of Irma and Hay Lin's crazed attempts at finding a good penitence for her bad grade, then notices that Uriah and his gang are bullying Will and Taranee and [[BullyHunter sends the bullies running with a single phrase]] before [[LovableAlphaBitch effectively adopting Will and Taranee in her group of friends]].
* EmbarrassingNickname: Irma, please stop calling her "Corny" (in the comic).
* TheFashionista: Loves shopping and nice clothes. [[AllWomenLoveShoes And especially shoes]].
* TheFightingNarcissist: Mostly in "N is for Narcissist", but later grows out of the "narcissist" part.
* FirstLove: In the comics, [[spoiler:for Caleb before he became a couple with Elyon.]]
* FriendToAllLivingThings: She has a connection to plants, even being able to communicate with them, or "green speak".
* GirlyGirlWithATomboyStreak: Cornelia is elegant, logical, comes from a wealthy family, is involved in a "fairy-tale"-like romance and dresses nicely, but she's also very argumentative, cynical, and doesn't mind getting her feet dirty when there's hard labor.
* GreenThumb: Provides the trope picture.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Cornelia can be a jerk, arrogant, and selfish...she also is loyal, doesn't like bullies, and will ''kick the ass'' of anyone that hurts the people she loves.
* IJustWantToBeNormal: When the Guardians were temporarily BroughtDownToNormal at the start of the ''New Power Saga'' she was the only one who wasn't freaking out, feeling finally normal. She instead freaks out when they get the titular power up, and had an OhCrap face when she saw it descending from the sky (again in contrast with the girls, who were happy of seeing the incoming magic and getting the power up). It resurfaced in issue #131: when the Guardians were told they were supposed to give up their powers or face a series of tasks to get a new power-up she was for giving them up, and accepted to take the tasks only in exchange for Irma's not making any joke on her for a year ([[StatusQuoIsGod Irma later succeeded in getting permission to joke as much as she wanted]]).
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: After the aforementioned defrosting. She can still be mean and self-absorbed, but her heart is as brave and selfless as her companions.
* KickingAssInAllHerFinery: Both her Guardian outfits are based on cocktail dresses.
* TheLancer: If someone's going to argue with Will, it's usually going to be her. When they're on the same page, though, Cornelia will back her up as much as the others.
* LovableAlphaBitch: While she was this in the comics from the start, she had to grow into this in the cartoon.
* MeaningfulName:
** Her name is the female form of the name "Cornelius," meaning "the horned one" - a reference to her astrological sign, Taurus (which is by extension an Earth sign).
** There's some rather amusing official chibi art of her cosplaying as Taurus, complete with horns.
** In the [[Literature/TheBible New Testament]], Cornelius was directed by an angel to seek a man named [[spoiler: [[SecondLove Peter]]]].
* MindOverMatter: Has telekinesis in the comics and gains it in the second season of the show. Her first use of it was to [[MundaneUtility clean her room]].
* MostCommonSuperpower: Mostly in the cartoon, especially in the episode "N is for Narcissist". In the comic, being the only one actually happy with her body shape, her Guardian form is the flattest.
* {{Narcissist}}: Shown in full value in "N is for Narcissist", but later {{Averted}} it at the episode's end.
-->'''Cornelia:''' I'm not just pretty, I'm ''gorgeous''!
* NotSoDifferent: With Irma. Both are stubborn and can be insensitive at times, but are [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold Jerks With A Heart Of Gold]]. They also go through BreakTheHaughty moments in the cartoon version.
* TheOjou: In the original comics.
* PinkMeansFeminine: Her season one outfit consisted of a pink sweater and a pink dress.
* ProudBeauty: Often brags about her beauty, seemingly convinced she's the most beautiful girl around-and quite annoyed in the cartoon when the new girl (Nerissa in disguise) stole away the boys that usually fawned over her at lunch.
* RapunzelHair: She has long blond hair in human form, but it grows out so that it almost reaches the ''floor'' in Guardian form. At times she can even use it as a weapon.
* RedOniBlueOni: The blue to Irma's red. This is the main source of their conflicts.
* RichBitch: More in the show, though she has her moments in the comics.
* SilkHidingSteel: She has this characterization in the comics, appearing as a refined young lady but is ''not'' to be underestimated.
* SitcomArchnemesis: With Irma.
* SlapSlapKiss: To Caleb in the cartoon but they grow out of it by the end of season 2.
* SmallNameBigEgo: She has a serious case of overconfidence, believing she can handle almost anything on her own.
* SnarkKnight: Like Irma, Corny won't hesitate at her job of being a Guardian. She'll make snippy and witty one liners.
* StatuesqueStunner: The tallest of [=WITCH=] and can grow even ''taller'' thanks to her powers.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: The Girly Girl to Will and Irma's Tomboy.
* TookALevelInKindness: After going through a lot of BreakTheHaughty moments, Corny starts to be more sensitive, understanding, and basically matured a lot.
* ValleyGirl: Starts off this way in the TV show. It becomes downplayed as it goes on, particularly in the second season.
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: She does not react kindly towards anyone attacking Caleb and will hunt down just about anyone who threatens him. Justified in that, by the end of the series, her boyfriend is the only main character without superpowers going up against their very powerful, very magical, enemies.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Irma.
* WhatTheHellHero: When Phobos tells Elyon the truth about her origins and manipulates her into a FaceHeelTurn, Cornelia gives Will quite a bit of crap over it, since it was Will's decision to keep Elyon LockedOutOfTheLoop in the first place.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Cornelia is terrified of water.

[[folder:Hay Lin]]
[[quoteright:188:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1432942797.jpg]]
->Voiced by: Liza Del Mundo

The Air Guardian, Hay Lin is a bit of an [[{{Pun}} airhead]]. She enjoys art and comic books. Her family manages the Silver Dragon restaurant. She falls in love with Eric Lyndon.
----
* {{Adorkable}}: The absolute ''quirkiest'' of the girls, due to her [[CloudcuckooLander spaciness]], [[CloudcuckooLanguage tendency to make up her own words]], and [[{{Nerd}} the fact that she collects comics and alien collectibles]].
* AsianAirhead: Type Two, but ''much'' [[SmarterThanYouLook smarter than she looks, especially in the comics]].
* TheBabyOfTheBunch: The youngest member of W.I.T.C.H.
* BadassPacifist: Hay Lin defeated a villain in the comics just by using her optimism.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: She is the most cheerful, quirky, and eccentric member of W.I.T.C.H. She's also the one who put a hurricane in a paper box small enough to be kept in a pocket.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: The most {{Adorkable}} of the group, but is just as effective in a fight.
* BeYourself: Taranee explicitly states in the cartoon version that she admires how Hay Lin is just herself, and doesn't care what other people think.
* BigEater: Implied in "S is for Self".
* TheBigGirl: Sometimes [[Comicbook/{{WITCH}} in the comic book]]. She also has previous martial arts knowledge, good enough to knock down a Capoeira practitioner.
* BlowYouAway: Hay Lin is the Guardian of Air.
* BreakTheCutie: She goes into a HeroicBSOD in "T is for Trauma". She got better.
* CatchPhrase: "Yap!", "Spacious!", "Out of this world"
* CheerfulChild: A teenager variant. Always a smile on her face.
* ChineseGirl: The only Asian person among the protagonists. Not counting Taranee who is half-Asian but Japanese instead of Chinese.
* CloudCuckoolander: Much more apparent in the show, though she can [[LetsGetDangerous get serious]] just as easily as the others.
* {{Cloudcuckoolanguage}}: Sometimes she makes up words like "weirdific" or "rockalicious".
* CuteClumsyGirl: Very cute and very clumsy, but still capable.
* TheCutie: She's cute and adorably ditzy.
* DorkKnight: Hay Lin is the most [[{{Adorkable}} dorky and happy-go-lucky]] Guardian of W.I.T.C.H.
* DreamWalker: In a sense. Hay Lin is capable of Empathic Precognition; if she's thinking strongly of someone before she sleeps, she can see what will happen to them in the future, like she did with Elyon before her coronation.
* TheFashionista: In a more artistic sense than Cornelia, though, as she makes her own clothing.
* FriendToAllChildren: {{Implied}} in F is for Facades with her minor scene with Lillian, Cornelia's younger sister.
* FriendToAllLivingThings: In the comics, she rescued all the dogs in a not so great shelter. In the cartoon, Hay Lin is quite fond of Mr. Huggles and even owned him for a short time. Until keeping him caused a big problem with the customers in the Silver Dragon.
* FullNameBasis: Lin is actually her family name.
* GenkiGirl: She loves life, designing clothes, painting, and sending armies of mooks flying with a wave of her arm.
* GiftGivingGaffe: She's next to impossible to find a good birthday gift for, as whavever her friends are planning to give her she somehow manages to ''always'' buy herself shortly before her birthday.
* GirlishPigtails: Has very long pigtails.
* GirlyBruiser: Hay Lin is a cute fashionista who's also got some martial arts skills.
* GirlyGirlWithATomboyStreak: Hay Lin is creative, free-spirited, and loves both fashion and the arts, but she's also a huge nerd obsessed with comic books/anime, space and sci-fi stuff.
* GogglesDoNothing: Wore them often in the earlier issues, but seemed to grow out of it.
* HiddenDepths: The cartoon has Hay Lin reveal some self-esteem issues.
* HulkingOut: After she's cursed by a Ragorlang, she becomes one herself when she feels fear or anger. The rest of the Guardians soon break the curse.
* IdenticalGrandson: Hay Lin is basically a pig-tailed wearing version of her grandma in her youth.
* KickingAssInAllHerFinery: Her New Power outfit wouldn't be out of place at a formal event.
* KidAppealCharacter: The most childlike and fun-loving of the girls.
* LikeBrotherAndSister: Has this dynamic with Caleb, who lives beneath her family's restaurant when he is on earth.
* MamaBear: {{Inverted}}. She is ''very'' protective towards her grandmother.
* MsImagination: Her favorite class is even art.
* MotorMouth: Comes with being a GenkiGirl.
* NiceGirl: The least sarcastic member of the Guardians. She is the first person to treat Blunk kindly and he even calls her "Smiley Girl".
* NoIndoorVoice: She's not as bad as Irma though.
* {{Otaku}}: Mostly in the comics, where she dreams of meeting aliens and has replicas of the [[Franchise/StarTrek Enterprise]].
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness:
** In "T is for Trauma", Hay Lin isn't her usual cheerful, goofy, smiling self... she's quiet, frowning, depressed, and (at the end) ''very pissed off''. WE know that if [[GenkiGirl someone]] [[{{Adorkable}} like]] [[MotorMouth Hay Lin]] can resort to this, that means that the BigBad ''went too far''.
** Like the other Guardians, [[AcquiredSituationalNarcissism she becomes drunk with power]] in the New Power Arc and so overconfident that Yan Lin notices it's not like her.
* PerpetualSmiler: About 98% of the time. [[{{Tearjerker}} You should be worried when she's not smiling.]] In one arc of the Ragorlang arc her optimism allows her to save her friends.
* {{Qipao}}: Both her original and New Power Guardian outfits are based on this.
* RapunzelHair: Her hair is so long that it nearly touches her ankles. Since the New Power story arc, her air [[UpToEleven gets longer]] in Guardian form.
* RavenHairIvorySkin: Technically, she's shown with blue hair.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: She's the only main character that has an animesque hair color. She's sometimes shown with or described as having black hair.
* ZettaiRyouiki: S-grade in her New Power form. Somehow, she manages to pull it off with a ''long'' skirt (loincloth-style) and a verytable mane of hair between the twin tails.
