* AffablyEvil: Despite ''really'' wanting to TakeOverTheWorld, (and occasionally going to some [[KickTheDog extreme lengths]] to achieve this goal) Eggman's a fairly pleasant fellow who treats his enemies with respect. Well, most of the time.

*** Said manual then points out it's a tad hard to see such qualities behind the maniacal laughter often accompanying his announcements of Global Domination.
* {{Antivillain}}: In ''SonicX'' at least. Arguably more an AffablyEvil villain early on, but by the third season his role as true villain is all but gone.

* BigBad: As mentioned above, he is the central antagonist of the series. Lately, however, [[BigBadWannabe he has taken a more secondary role in certain titles due to]] [[AlwaysSomeoneBetter more fearsome antagonists]] entering the scene. It doesn't help that he [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness ends up a patsy for so many of them]]. Apparently, SEGA had paid attention to this and now Dr. Eggman is the main BigBad of the recent Sonic games, such as ''SonicTheHedgehog4'' and ''SonicColors''.

* TheDeterminator: You do have to give him the credits for no matter the setbacks, he'll always try to defeat Sonic. [[DeconstructedTrope Deconstructed]] in the Archie comics during Ian Flynn's run, there the constant setbacks were slowly cracking his mind till issue 200, which he finally suffers from a completly disturbing and realistic VillainousBreakdown. Not long afterwards, he recovers from said breakdown by ''reasoning himself out of it''.

* DubNameChange: From "Eggman" to "Robotnik". Eventually, due to the western continuities becoming obsolete once Adventure came out, they eventually decided to name him "Ivo Robotnik" with "Eggman" as a nickname, in all versions.

* EvilCounterpart: To Tails
* EvillyAffable: Most of the more ruthless alternate incarnations: e.g. the ''[=SatAm=]'' and Archie comic interpretations at least have some moderate goofy or whimsical traits.

* ForTheEvulz: Some alternate interpretations: Particularly the ''[[SonicTheComic StC]]'' and ''[=SatAM=]'' versions revolve many of their plans or past times on the suffering of innocents. The games and ''Sonic X'' versions are more toned down, though they do retain CardCarryingVillain traits on occasion.

* ItsAllAboutMe: Not only does he paste his own face onto almost ''all'' his creations, he wants the entire world to admire him and his brilliance.

* StoutStrength: On and off, he's shown to be stronger than he appears, smacking a giant robot's hand away with his stomache, and punching a(n albeit small) defense turret off the wall with his bare hands.

** In the Movie/OVA, his programming is based on Sonic's mind. After a while, this eventually becomes a crapshoot in the other direction, and does things the real Sonic would do.

** Also repeated in ''Sonic Free Riders'' where he [[spoiler:disguised himself as a blue E-10000 in order to copy everyone's data and prove himself the best user of Extreme Gear.]]

* YesMan: Dispite Orbot's snarky attitude, he's always willing to follow Eggman's orders.

* WeCanRuleTogether: He pulls this a couple time, though he's really bad at it, and seems to honestly be surprised when Shadow says no.

Known as "Fang the Sniper" in Japan, he's a treasure hunter out for cash. His only main appearance was in ''Sonic Triple Trouble'', and had a few more in spinoffs but that's it.

The [[TheManBehindTheMan true villain]] of ''{{Sonic the Hedgehog 2006}}'', and [[spoiler:the other half of the god of light Solaris]].

* ColourCodedForYourConvenience: The main difference between him and Shadow; initially, Mephiles' stripes are a gray-blue instead of Shadow's red.

* DarkIsEvil: Just look at his name, Mephiles the ''[[MeaningfulName Dark]]''.
* DirtyCoward: He fights usually when the opponent isn't looking, he even [[spoiler: murdered Sonic]] while his back was turned, this may be the reason he put everyone on a wild goose chase, so that he wouldn't have anyone to fight before he could [[spoiler: kill Sonic the Hedgehog while Elise was watching]], may fall into FridgeBrilliance.

* ForTheEvulz: The only suggestable reason that he wants to completely destroy space and time.

* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: Overlaps with MeaningfulName. Mephiles = Mephistopheles, the demon from Faust, sometimes associated with Satan. Likewise Iblis is the Islamic word for devil.
* NoMouth: His muzzle kind of inflates and deflates when he talks though.

* RedEyesTakeWarning: An inversion. His irises are normally ''green'', while in his OneWingedAngel form the sclera: the white part of the eye turns completely red.

** Really bad at it? I don't think so. He makes some convincing arguments. Whether or not Shadow falls for it depends largely on your path through the storyline. Though, yes, Black Doom's most blatant example does come in the Last Story, and Shadow blatantly refuses that one: Granted, he needed some help from the Chaotix and one of Gerald's old recordings, but the effects of Black Doom's "mind control" seemed to be more along the lines of "holding in place".
*** Oh, I wasn't talking about the story. I meant the fact that the [[{{Mooks}} Black Arms Soldiers]] still attack you even when you're helping him, thus not creating much incentive for Shadow other than 'because I say so'.

* EnsembleDarkhorse: Despite appearing in so few games, he has a large fanbase; he even won an official poll on characters to bring back.
