* TheAtoner: She was a FARC guerrilla trained as an assassin in Cuba. After becoming disillusioned, she ran away and became a maid for a pacifist.

* BriefcaseBlaster: Used one in her initial appearance for the surprise factor.
* BringingRunningShoesToACarChase: She overtakes the Lagoon Crew's vehicle at a dead run and leaping right on the rear with a trench knife. There's a reason she's often compared to the Franchise/{{Terminator}}.
* ByronicHeroine: Let's see: morally neutral, physically attractive, largely concerned with personal interests, suffering from a troubled past that still haunts her, guilty of crimes, cynical, jaded and self-destructive. Yeah, she fits the bill.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: She can outrun a car and fire machine guns one handed due to her assassin training.
* CompositeCharacter: A combined {{Expy}} of Film/ElMariachi, [[Film/Terminator2JudgmentDay The T-1000]] '''and''' Film/MaryPoppins, or [[WordOfGod as the author calls her]], "Death Poppins".

And then there's what's inside her suitcase besides all that.
* CreepyGood: Not ''good'' in a heroic sense, but she's the closest thing the show has to an AntiHero aside from Rock, since her only motivation is to save a young boy from certain death, and later, to avenge his father. When Sawyer steps in, Roberta jams the chain and snaps the blade with the ''trigger guards'' of her IMBEL. And when it's Lotton's turn? [[GroinAttack She gives him the boot]]. Lotton survived, thanks to his CrazyPrepared-ness, but it should be noted that the steel codpiece Lotton used to protect his goods was ''crumpled like a soda can from the impact''.

* EveryProperLadyShouldCurtsy: She does this after she finishes mowing down a group of thugs in a bar with her umbrella gun, revealing to the surviving thugs that she had several grenades hidden under her dress and had pulled off all the pins in the process.
* FaceHeelTurn: During the "El Baile De La Muerte" arc. While she was never on the Lagoon Company's side, she was more of a "Face" until her SanitySlippage as a result of her master's assassination from the bombing done by the NSA.
* {{Foil}}: For Revy. Similar violent backgrounds, inhumanly efficient man-killers, dangerously unhinged, and both fly into a homicidal rage if their [[MoralityPet morality pets]] are harmed (Rock for Revy, Garcia for Roberta). ''But'', Roberta is capable of suppressing her violent nature, is easily capable of loving, desperately seeks a purpose in life (in contrast to Revy's nihilism), is much more polite and intelligent, and feels guilt for all the things she did in the past. Essentially, she's how Revy would be if she tried to add purpose to her life and allowed herself to feel love or remorse.

* HypocriticalHumor: "I have no need for filthy language." During her fistfight with Revy, "STAY THE [[PrecisionFStrike FUCK]] OUT OF THIS!"

The only reason she can still walk in the ending is thanks to a cobbled together prosthetic right leg.]]
* NinjaMaid: She doesn't just know kung fu; she's ''bloody invincible'', and carrying enough weaponry in her maid uniform to depopulate a small country. Considering that she used to be the infamous "Bloodhound of Florencia", the most dangerous hitwoman from the FARC…
* NotSoDifferent: Her and Revy. Pointed out by everyone.
* ParasolOfPain: Hers is made of Kevlar and has a built in ''shotgun''. And that's just one of her many pain-inducing items.
* PrecisionFStrike: See Hypocritical Humor, above.
* PurelyAestheticGlasses: There's nothing wrong with her eyes. She wears the glasses as part of her "Roberta the peaceful maid" persona. They help her stay in character.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: Who would believe that the clumsy housemaid who just burned dinner is actually the [[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast "Bloodhound of Florencia"]]?
* OneWomanArmy: A fully armed drug cartel meets her in a bar. She kills all of them with ease.
* OpaqueNerdGlasses: Averted. When they're aren't opaque, you see a [[DeathGlare glare with the fury of 10,000 Hells]].
* RapunzelHair: Had it even in her FARC days.
* RedBaron: The Bloodhound of Florencia
* RedemptionFailure: ''Tried'' to be a good person by being a loyal servant and a mother/sister of sorts to Garcia… sadly, all that went out the window with the murder of her master/Garcia's dad at the start of "El Baile De La Muerte". Worse yet, [[spoiler:[[BatmanGambit this was exactly what the antagonists of said arc were trying to accomplish]].]]
* TheRival: One of the many DarkActionGirl rivals for [[VillainProtagonist Revy]]. Unlike Eda, it's less on a personal level and purely from a "I'm just better than you" point of view. Unlike the others though, she's the only one who's arguably "stronger" than Revy, besting her whenever they fight.
* RoaringRampageOfRescue: What happens when Garcia gets kidnapped. It's absolutely terrifying to both Garcia and the Lagoon Company.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: When Roberta's master (and Garcia's dad) is killed at the start of "El Baile De La Muerte", a trail of destruction is Roberta's response.
* SanitySlippage: During "El Baile De La Muerte", she starts downing Ritalin like it's candy, which pushes her far beyond her limits.
* ScaryShinyGlasses: She uses them to hide her perpetual DeathGlare.
* SheCleansUpNicely: Lampshaded when Roberta changes from her maid's outfit to a amazonian look.
* SheWhoFightsMonsters: In ''El Baile De La Muerte'' she hunts the killers of her dear master and becomes more dangerous than them. Only [[spoiler:Garcia, Fabiola and Rock's plan]] were enough to snap her out of psycho-mode.
* ShowerOfAngst: We see her sulking in the shower right after her master's demise.
* SlasherSmile: In "El Baile De La Muerte". [[http://www.mangareader.net/700-33904-14/black-lagoon/chapter-50.html holy]][[http://www.mangareader.net/700-33919-6/black-lagoon/chapter-65.html crap]].
* SociopathicHero: She was once an amoral killing machine but has now dedicated herself to the Lovelace family [[spoiler:and goes completely off the deep end when she thinks her young master has died]].
* SpecsOfAwesome: Her permanently ScaryShinyGlasses only make her look even more {{badass}}.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Her last name, Cisneros, has been localized as "Tisneros". Admittedly this is closer to how the name is pronounced in Japanese.
* TranquilFury: After Abrego's cartel kidnap Garcia, she rips through his goons and tears a swath across Roanapur to get him back, all the while having the emotional expression of a brick wall.
* TheUnfettered: In "El Baile De La Muerte", she [[RoaringRampageOfRevenge will kill those who killed her master]] then [[MamaBear return to the young master]]. And she's not [[UnstoppableRage particular]] about what it does to her, anyone else, or the long-term consequences. [[AxCrazy Move or die.]]
* UndyingLoyalty: '''Fiercely''' loyal to Garcia and his father.
* UnscrupulousHero: Her moral code can be seen as heroic (by this series' standards at least) since she gave up her life as a FARC guerrilla to become the maid of a pacifist and she only returns to her old ways to save the son of her master. But ''goddamn'' is she ruthless and terrifying. Then her moral code goes down the crapper with the "El Baile De La Muerte" arc.
* UnstoppableRage: If you kidnap or kill her masters, she will hunt you down through single photographs and kill you. You have a slight chance of surviving if you are a member of the Green Berets, otherwise you are ''dead''.
* VillainProtagonist: During the "El Baile De La Muerte" arc.
* WalkingArmory: Roberta carries a gatling gun briefcase, shotgun disguised as an umbrella, at least one knife, and a crapload of grenades.
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: During the "El Baile De La Muerte" arc.
* WorthyOpponent: To Revy. Roberta's actually the only person in the series who's gone toe-to-toe with Revy in both a gunfight and a fistfight and ''won''; In their first gunfight she briefly knocked Revy unconscious with a grenade, and then knocked her out ''again'' in a fistfight (this time for several hours).

Roberta's actually Revy immediately pegs him as one for her. He slowly stops denying his inner psycho and admits he sees her the only person in the series who's gone toe-to-toe same way. That's why he has a duel with Revy in both a gunfight and a fistfight and ''won''; In their first gunfight she briefly knocked Revy unconscious with a grenade, and then knocked her out ''again'' in a fistfight (this time for several hours).

* AllLovingHero: Stubbornly refuses to resort to violence as a means to an end, [[IfYouKillHimYouWillBeJustLikeHim knowing the consequences of it]]. He also keeps Fabiola from making this mistake. [[spoiler:The one time he appears to subvert this, it was a ruse.]]
* BreakTheCutie: [[spoiler: [[DefiedTrope Vehemently defied]]. * AChildShallLeadThem: [[spoiler:Becomes the Lovelace family head out of necessity after his father is killed.]]
* CooldownKiss: [[spoiler:Gives one to Roberta to revert her from psycho mood.]]
* CutenessProximity: Seems to cause this a few times in "El Baile de la Muerte", first when they go to the wrecked Yellow Flag several of the [[HookerWithAHeartOfGold scantily clad ladies]] that Bao is hanging out with seem quite taken with him, and Shenhua hugs him and out right and [[ImTakingHimHomeWithMe asks if he wants to be her son]].
* DistressedDude: Introduced as a victim of kidnapping. It's not his fault; he ain't a child soldier like several other kids in this series. It's never stated if he had even a sliver of combat training his entire life.
* HarmfulToMinors: Watching his maid slaughter a drug cartel while they swear up a storm.
* HeIsAllGrownUp: Roberta told him that she was impressed by how much he had grown in her absence [[spoiler:(after he had straddled her, no less).]]
* IKnowYoureInThereSomewhereFight: With Roberta.
* MexicanStandoff: [[spoiler:Fakes one with Roberta as part of the plan to bring her down from her RoaringRampageOfRevenge.]]
* MoralityChain: To Roberta. Around him she acts like a nice {{Meido}}. When he's not around her, [[ImplacableMan she tends to go crazy]].
* NameOrderConfusion: Just like Balalaika, his name should be written in Spanish as "Fernando ''Garcia'' Lovelace", as Fernando is normally a first name and Garcia Lovelace are paternal and maternal last names in many Latin American countries.
* PrecociousCrush: He has a crush on his maid Roberta, who's in her mid-to-late 20's. [[spoiler:In "El Baile de la Muerte", ''he kisses her''.]]
* WorldOfCardboardSpeech: "See? We're ''not'' dead."

[[quoteright:200:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/_diego_8611.jpg]]
->Voiced by: Ryunosuke Obayashi (JP), Michael Kopsa (EN)

Garcia's father, Roberta's boss and leader of the Lovelace family. Whose tragic death kicks off the ''El Baile de la Muerte'' arc.
-----
* ClassTraitor: He is of the old landowning class in Venezuela (well known for their right-wing politics), but when he was killed he was participating in a meeting of Hugo Chavez' fledgeling Fifth Republic Movement - which was even then socialism-inclined.
* DisappearedDad: More like blown to smithereens, but still…
* ImpoverishedPatrician: According to Rock, the Lovelace family is on the lower rungs of Venezuelan high society. While he still has quite a bit of money due to plantations, it's still not much compared to what the Lovelaces used to have in the past. This is due to Diego's political beliefs (he's a quasi-socialist amongst a famously capitalist group) and the harrassment of the Colombian cartel.
* MoralityChain: Roberta owes him her new chance at life, and thus she goes batshit when he kicks it.
* NameOrderConfusion: Just like his son, "Fernando" is not a last name (not even with the "San" in front of it). Unlike his son, Diego and Jose ''are'' proper first names.
* SacrificialLion: His death kicks off the "El Baile de la Muerte" arc.

!!Fabiola Iglesias
[[quoteright:225:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Fabiola_4690.jpg]]
->Voiced by: Creator/SatsukiYukino (JP), Creator/ShannonChanKent (EN)

Another maid in the Lovelace household, and the only one who's trained in hand-to-hand combat and weaponry like Roberta. After she leaves in her RoaringRampageOfRevenge, Fabiola becomes Garcia's caretaker.
-----
* ActionGirl: One of the very few female warriors in the series that aren't considerably [[DarkActionGirl darker]].
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: She learned Capoeira from watching people practice. No formal training involved.
* {{Badass}}: She equals Revy in hardcoreness but in a adorable way, only character so far who calls Revy out on her DarkActionGirl routine and [[TakeThat verbally own her]] without fear or hesitation of Revy usually shooting the crap outta someone.
* BadassAdorable: Basically Roberta Lite.
* BareYourMidriff: Late in "El Baile de la Muerte", she ditches her maid outfit for bike shorts, a sports bra, and an unzipped hoodie. Averted in the ''Roberta's Blood Trail'' OVA when the hoodie remained zipped.
* UsefulNotes/{{Capoeira}}: Uses this in conjunction with gunplay.
* CelibateHeroine:
-->"There is no need for you to be concerned about my breasts. Even if they grew as big as melons I have no intention of anybody fondling them."
* ComplainingAboutRescuesTheyDontLike: [[spoiler:''Shoots'' Rock with a blank and cracks his rib at the end of "El Baile De La Muerte". While his actions end up saving their lives, his methods are still enormously underhanded and get Roberta and Garcia hurt, and she calls him out on this.]]
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Green hair and eyes.
* DanceBattler: Well versed in Capoeira, and uses this to dodge bullets while dual-wielding ''shotguns''.
* DramaticGunCock: When she pulls out a China Lake grenade launcher (that she hid on her back, underneath her outfit) to take out an SUV.
* {{Foil}}: To Revy, she represents the integrity of living a hardcore lifestyle without going psycho and giving up on the world. She's also probably Revy's alternate self, if she were a maid and very polite.
* GetAHoldOfYourselfWoman: Sadly doesn't have as much success as Garcia did with Roberta, but hey, she tried.
* GoodParents: Her parents were hard-working and passed on their strict moral values despite living in a WretchedHive. When Fabiola says she was beaten for stealing, Revy assumes they are NotSoDifferent from her own AbusiveParents. Fabiola thinks otherwise.
* GroinAttack: With a ''knife'' concealed in her shoe. Ouch!
* GunsAkimbo: Dual-wields two Techno Arms MAG-7 ''shotguns'' that she hides [[NothingUpMySleeve in her sleeves]].
* {{IncorruptiblePurePureness}}: Lets put it like this, if this series needed an action movie hero who was a straight up good guy with steadfast idealistic ethtics, Fabiola would be that role and Garcia would be the sidekick or the Heart of the two. While Revy would probably be the main villain alongside Rock as the mastermind of the two.
* KirkSummation: To ''Revy'' of all people, who has been insisting that they live in a [[CrapsackWorld horrible, vicious world]] and that Fabiola needs to stop being so [[RousseauWasRight idealistic]]. She finally gets fed up with it and insists the world is neither, and that she can accept that the world is [[GreyAndGrayMorality a gray place]] and the one who ''really'' thinks the world is black and white is Revy herself. Neither Revy nor Rock were impressed.
* LettingHerHairDown: She undoes her bun when she has an informal conversation with Garcia.
* LittleMissBadass: About 14 to 15 years old, one of the shortest characters in the series, and packing enough firepower to shoot out the entire frontage of the Yellow Flag and blow up an SUV in one shot.
* ModestyShorts : Being a DanceBattler who fights in a [[{{Meido}} Maid outfit]], bike shorts are a must to prevent unwanted attention.
* TheNapoleon: Is picked on because of her lack of height; [[BullyingADragon a rather unwise thing to do]].
* NinjaMaid: Not ''as'' lethal as Roberta, but then again [[UnstoppableRage it's very hard to be as lethal as Roberta]].
* NotSoDifferent: Averted; she sports Roberta's fang-like SlasherSmile at one point, and Revy tries to push Fabiola more towards her nihilistic point-of-view, but she rejects Revy's arguments and never revels in violence like Revy or Roberta do.
* PluckyGirl: One of the few characters in the series who believes that problems can be solved without violence, and stalwartly holds onto this belief despite Revy's constant attempts to convince her otherwise.
* PrimAndProperBun: Done up into her maid frill. It doubles as CompressedHair.
* SmallGirlBigGun: Carries a pump-action China Lake grenade launcher during her fight at the Yellow Flag.
* StreetUrchin: Her backstory involved living on the street before coming to the Lovelace household.
* UndyingLoyalty: Similar to Roberta, being taken in by the Lovelace family earned them her eternal loyalty.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: She makes no effort whatsoever to hide that she detests the methods and mannerisms of Lagoon Company, ''especially'' Rock and Revy. Regardless, she puts up with it for Garcia and Roberta's sake.
* ThouShaltNotKill: During the Yellow Flag shoot-out she inflicts serious injury, but tries to avoid killing anyone.
* WhatTheHellHero: Gives one to Rock at the end of the Roberta arc, because of him using most of the characters involved as pawns and the fact that he did it for [[ItAmusedMe fun]] as well to win the bet with Mr. Chang.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Green hair in this case.

Legendary enforcer for the Washimine clan and protector of Yukio Washimine, his skill with a sword is equal to Revy's gunfighting ability.
-----
* BackToBackBadasses: With Revy at the bowling alley against Chaka's group.
* {{Badass}}: This guy can take on Revy herself with only a sword, slice bullets in half mid-flight, and thoroughly earned his title of "Manslayer Ginji." He is by far the deadliest man in the Washimine clan.
%%* BadassBeard
* BerserkButton: Harm Yukio in any way and you will die slowly and painfully. [[spoiler:Chaka found that out the hard way.]]
* TheBigGuy: Revy calls him "Jumbo" for a reason.
* BodyguardCrush: On Yukio, whom he pledged loyalty to.
* BornInTheWrongCentury: Honestly, his almost-supernatural swordsmanship belongs in a completely different ''genre'', much less century.
%%* CoolShades
* DodgeTheBullet: When he's not [[ParryingBullets cutting bullets in half in midair]] Ginji dodges them with ease, despite his size, at ''point blank'' range.
* TheDragon: Number one enforcer for the Washimine Clan.
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: Ginji with not just Yukio, but ''any'' female character.
%%* IaijutsuPractitioner

* KatanasAreJustBetter: Ginji uses a shirasaya blade. Semi-justified in that he's part of the {{Yakuza}}.
* LightningBruiser: Huge but fast.
* MrFanservice: He's a muscled giant with sunglasses and a katana who spends some time shirtless.
* NeighbourhoodFriendlyGangsters: He's first seen working in a festival booth. He also says that being poor is better than "selling women and drugs."
* NeverBringAKnifeToAGunFight: He averts this completely. [[{{Badass}} And wins.]]
* PapaWolf: Do not even ''look'' at his protégé [[YakuzaPrincess Yukio]] wrong.

* {{Samurai}}: With his katana, loyalty to his traditional minded master and other aspects, he fits this mode.

%%* TheStoic

* BlatantLies: He tells Rock that, as a former cop, he's seen both sides of the law and has a different perspective from anyone else. [[spoiler:He was actually a ''corrupt'' cop, responsible for the deaths of his fellow officers and other nasty stuff. He was on the other side from the start.]]

!! Shenhua
[[quoteright:225:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shenhua_blacklagoon.jpg]]
->Voiced by: Creator/YukoSasaki (JP), Creator/SaffronHenderson (EN)

A Taiwanese assassin in the employ of Mr. Chang. She prefers to use various edged weapons in close combat, in particular a pair of kukri knives linked together with a length of leather rope at the handles, thus using them as modified rope darts. She is also skilled in the use of throwing knives.

------
* AffablyEvil: Quite cheery most of the time, whether she's skewering hapless {{Mooks}}, or delivering an unfortunate man in a suitcase to be chopped up by a goth with a chainsaw. She and Revy even have a (relatively) friendly conversation whilst trying to kill each other.
* AsianSpeekeeEngrish: Speaks like this in both the Japanese and English dubs, something Revy makes fun of whenever they see each other.
* AxCrazy: She can get rather… enthusiastic about chopping up people with kukuri knives.
* {{Badass}}: She's like Revy but with swords instead of guns and with the addition of martial art skills.
* DarkActionGirl: She's as [[AxCrazy insane]] as she is capable.
* DragonLady: She's a Taiwanese assassin who wears cheongsam/qipao and talks in pidgin English (or Japanese, respectively). Don't underestimate her because of that if you value your life.
* EloquentInMyNativeTongue: She presumably speaks fluent Chinese, but her English (and Japanese, in the original) is utterly dreadful both in grammar and pronunciation, to the point where Revy (who is Chinese-American) nicknames her "Chinglish". It's ''not'' a good idea to take her poor language skills for stupidity, [[DarkActionGirl unless you want to be]] [[KnifeNut knifed to death]].
-->"My English not good because I am pure Taiwanese. [[ThisIsForEmphasisBitch Maybe you like me to skin your ass, bitch?]]"
* FemmeFatalons: She has long red nails.
* IAmNotLeftHanded: Wears long stiletto heels on purpose to keep her edge in an environment where almost nobody knows martial arts. When she gets serious, they come off.
* KickingAssInAllHerFinery: The difference between her and [[WorldOfBadass every other woman in the show]] is that she kicks ass while wearing an elegant red {{qipao}}.
* KnifeNut: She's as good with the knives as Revy is with the guns. She also has some [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kunai kunai]] for long distance fighting, and can [[ThrowingYourSwordAlwaysWorks toss her Kukris]] if her opponents are further away.
* KukrisAreKool: She fights with a much more practical version of a Whip Sword: twin whip kukri. She's good enough to behead people with them from 30 feet away.
* LadyOfWar: She's damn graceful with those kukris and kunai.
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: Very easy to underestimate given her {{Engrish}}. You'll regret laughing though when her knife comes out.
* PeekABangs: Her hair style involves a long fringe that occasionally covers her eyes.
* PowerTrio: She forms one with Lotton and Sawyer. They even live together now!
* {{Qipao}}: She loves wearing these, though she's Taiwanese to be precise.
* RapunzelHair: Wears her hair very long as part of her DragonLady motif.
* ShesGotLegs: That dress shows off every inch.
* ThrowingYourSwordAlwaysWorks: While she's pretty deadly in melee combat with her Kukris, they're also attached on a rope to her wrists, so she can also hurl them for mid-ranged combat. Her accuracy with them is pretty good as well.

!! Biu
Chang's most visible assistant, apparently his second-in-command.
-----
* BeleagueredAssistant: He's introduced with Chang casually tossing his cell phone at him, and further appearances put them into a lighter, more serious version of the [[StraightManAndWiseGuy Comedic Duo]].
* TheComicallySerious: With a boss as apparently whimsical as [[AffablyEvil Mr. Chang]], Biu's appearances tend to cast him as Chang's StraightMan. The light novel's "Master Ninja" incident comes to mind.
* CoolShades: Always wears shades.
* TheDragon: Though we've never seen Biu fight, he's highly enough ranked that he can (lightly) banter with his boss and occasionally discuss fairly personal matters.
* StraightMan: To Chang's "carefree mob boss act."
* TriadsAndTongs: He belongs to the Triad.

is Sofiya Irininskaya Pavlovena.also skilled in the use of throwing knives.

* AffablyEvil: Balalaika is generally calm, collected, funny, will occasionally spare people's lives on the grounds that they amuse her, is usually willing to negotiate before resorting to violence, and has only lost her temper once in the entire series. However, if negotiations don't go her way, she won't even blink before [[DissonantSerenity casually gunning down everyone in the room.]]
* AloneWithThePsycho: Inverted when Balalaika finds herself alone with PsychoForHire Hansel. The inversion is that [[spoiler:Balalaika [[CurbstompBattle quite easily]] has him killed]].
* AndYourLittleDogToo: Balalaika reminds the leaders of the other criminal organisations that her [[TheMafiya organisation]] will destroy anyone gets in their way. And their families. And their pet dog, if necessary.
* {{Asexuality}}: Even though she can get flirtatious with guys like Rock or, more seriously, Mr. Chang, she finds sex boring and uninteresting, and has no real sex life to speak of. There's also her completely bored-to-death look when she edits porn videos[[note]] although anyone who edits for a living can tell ya that after the first 30 minutes even porn gets boring when you're editing them[[/note]].
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: Is the head of Hotel Moscow, and is certainly in the upper echelons of the series lethality tier.
* {{Badass}}: She's Revy's role model in this regard. Whether it's negioations, war, or knife fighting, few can match her.
* BadassArmy: The Vysotoniki were all former Soviet commandos with the Spetsnaz and the [=VDV=] and they all had combat experience in Afghanistan against the Mujahideen.
* BadassInANiceSuit: Her normal wear is a red business top with a long skirt bottom.
* TheBaroness: Do NOT get on her bad side if you value your life. Trust us on this one.
* BeautyMark: To side of her left eye.
* BeingTorturedMakesYouEvil: Averted. While [[spoiler:her famous scars]] are the result of being captured and tortured in Afghanistan, what really set the Kapitan down that road was her country's "[[UngratefulBastard thanks]]" for their [[TraumaCongaLine soldiers' service]].
* BerserkButton: One of the surest ways to get on Balalaika's bad side is to torture or kill any of her men.
* BigBad: Granted, it's a series where nearly every character is an outright villain, but if there's any one character that fits the bill, it's Balalaika, in both the literal meaning of the trope ''(Hotel Moscow is the most dangerous criminal faction in Roanapur)'' and the fact that she's a BigGood to the main cast ''(who are also criminals)''.
* BigGood: To the [[VillainProtagonist main protagonists]] and anyone she looks after and/or gives jobs to. She treats them well and usually comes to lend a hand dealing with competing evils. Of course, this is only provided there's something in it for her and they don't get on her bad side; her true loyalty only lies with her war comrades. Case in point; though she's amused by Rock's {{Adorkable}} nature and takes a liking to him, the one time he pushes her too far with accusations and demands, she doesn't hesitate to flip him on the roof of a car and put a gun to his head.
* BloodKnight:
** According to Revy she'd rather give up sex than pass up a chance to wage war.
** In the light novel, she welcomed an old subordinate who'd found himself on the opposite side refusing the olive branch because it meant that he, like herself, meant to continue fighting to the bitter end.
* BreakTheCutie: In the anime, we see her as an innocent young girl who wanted to join the Olympic biathalon team. Then the Afghan War happened and she got completely trashed.
* BrokenBird: Thanks to the Afghan War and the subsequent collapse of her country, the cute teenager who wanted to become an Olympic marksman and make her family proud ended up as a cynical, scarred, and stylishly brutal [[TheBaroness Mafia queen]].
* TheChessmaster: In the old tradition of "game of kings", she crushes the opposition with superior tactics. [[spoiler:The Washimine family didn't know what hit them. Most of them were dead before they realized she was moving against them.]]
* ChronicBackstabbingDisorder: Fujiyama Gangsta Paradise. The head of Washimine clan attempted to do this at first because Balalaika was obviously going overboard, providing a very undesirable sort of help.
* CoatCape: She wears her Soviet military coat like this.
* CombatPragmatist: On a large scale, as she fights her mob wars like military operations. [[spoiler:Her men smashed the Washimine Group special forces-style, complete with snipers, frag grenades, flash-bangs, explosives and whatnot and suffered no casualties; the only loss from Hotel Moscow is the ex-KGB and his men, who are not part of Balalaika's ex-airborne troops [[InterserviceRivalry and who she never liked anyway]].]]
* CoolBigSis: To Revy, anyway, who even refers to her as "Anego" which means "Sister". Though Revy isn't above calling Balalaika a bitch when she pulls a gun on Rock [[spoiler:or has her men shoot Revy and Shenhua in the arms.]]
* CoveredWithScars: She has burn scars all over her body, ending at her thighs.
* DarkActionGirl: Before she graduated to The Baroness she was a sinister soldier sniper.
* DeadpanSnarker: Moreso than anyone else in this series.
* DeathSeeker: Balalaika confesses to Chang that her driving motivation is to "meet that one fated person in that one fated battle" and die remembering who she once was.
* DissonantSerenity: Nothing says "I love my job" like grinning while snapping a Yakuza leader's neck, stopping to engage in a philosophic debate about the nature of the human condition with [[spoiler:a would-be assassin whom she has just had shot]] or politely apologizing to Lagoon Company for any inconvenience they may have experienced during their last mission which ends with some unlucky bastard's apartment exploding.
* DullEyesOfUnhappiness: Given what she saw in Afghanistan, it's not a shock she has this.
* ElitesAreMoreGlamorous: Balalaika (and a large portion of her men) served as Spetznaz during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan; their tactics and training are used with brutal efficiency in their criminal operations.
* EmbarrassingNickname: The only one who "gets" to call Chang "Babe" to his face. Naturally, he (and everyone else who dares) responds with "Fry Face".
* EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep: Her real name is Sofiyia Pavlovena. She is rarely addressed by that.
* EvilLaugh: Her reaction to Rock trying to talk her down near the end of the Yakuza arc is sinister amusement.
* EvilerThanThou:
** Her confrontation with Hansel she proves that she is both more ruthless and more cruel.
** The {{yakuza}}, especially Yukio, learn that they are not nearly pragmatic enough to match her in mob warfare.
** In the light novel, she out-eviled ''Mr. Chang'' of all people, laughing in his face when he offered to take out her rebellious subordinate so she wouldn't have to kill one of her own.
* FemmeFatalons: She has long pink talons.
* FormerRegimePersonnel: She's ex-Soviet military. She also came from a rather high-ranking family.
* FriendlySniper: She was considered a better shot than any of her men in Afghanistan, not to mention much more approachable before things went to shit for them.
* GirlishPigtails: Her StartOfDarkness episode "Little Soldier Girls" reveals that she wore her hair like this prior to enlisting in the Soviet Special Forces. This serves to highlight the contrast between the innocent girl that she was, and the nihilistic BloodKnight that she becomes.
* GoodScarsEvilScars:
** Balalaika has a large part of one side of her face scarred as a result of the war. She's sometimes called "Fry Face" because of it. She still manages to look attractive regardless.
** The first time you see her arms in Chapter 64.
** The [[http://www.animepaper.net/gallery/scans/Black-Lagoon/item229980/ swimsuit special by the author/artist shows that it's actually most of her torso]] (assuming the doujin is canon).
%%According to the timeline, Balalaika can't be older than mid-thirties; please stop including the GrandmaWhatMassiveHotnessYouHave trope here
* IcyBlueEyes
* InSeriesNickname: Besides her pseudonym Balalaika, some of the other crime syndicates in Roanapur have been known to call her "Fry Face" because of her burn scars.
* IronLady: The no-nonsense leader of a gang of Russian commandos-turned-hitmen and the scariest member of their outfit by far.
* ItsRainingMen: Former VDV Airborne Troops captain.
* KickTheDog: Sending Rock a picture of [[spoiler:Yukio]], whom he inadvertently drove to suicide, with a big red "x" over it after the ordeal in Japan. Considering her general attitude towards him, it could be considered more of a morbid joke, but she did kick several other dogs in that arc, such as slaughtering an already weakened Washimine clan just because she could.
* KickTheSonOfABitch: [[spoiler:Killing Chen by tying him up in his own apartment and blowing him up for attempting to kill the Lagoon company.]]
* LadyOfWar: She was the captain of a Russian army squadron with enough manpower to potentially fight and hold on their own should World War III occur, and she hardly ever swears or raises her voice, maintaining a distinct air of grace and respect when speaking or being spoken to, and would probably shoot you without hesitation.
* {{Lzherusskie}}: The name "Sofiya Irininskaya Pavlovena" is a typical case of ''klukva''[[note]] (nonsense that foreigners commonly think is accurate about Russia)[[/note]]. The [[NameOrderConfusion order of names is totally wrong]] (it should be "Sofiya Pavlovna Irininskaya"), and the last name sounds really fake to real Russians.
* TheMafiya: Unlike most other women pertaining to a Mafia-like organization, she's in charge instead of being just a regular MafiaPrincess. If anything, she's more of a Mafia ''Queen''. She's too experienced and too powerful to be a mere "princess".
* MamaBear: You hurt her subordinates, you will be dead soon. And. VERY. Messily. [[spoiler:Hansel and Gretel didn't pay attention to this.]]
* AMotherToHerMen: Balalaika's concern for her subordinates are her a large source of her PetTheDog moments. If you attack ''any'' of her men, [[MamaBear you will be DEAD]]. Note this extends to her part-time employees as well, most notably the Lagoon Company. She might be utterly ruthless, but her recurring trait is her unswerving loyalty to her comrades, regardless of duration.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: A balalaika is a type of stringed instrument, but it's also Russian military slang for a Dragunov sniper rifle (which Balalaika used during the Soviet-Afghan War).
* OohMeAccentsSlipping: In the English Dub version of episode 3, when she is threatening Chen, she briefly slips into a thick Russian accent. Granted, she ''is'' Russian, but this is the only time she ever does it in the series. Maybe Patricia Drake just [[ThrowItIn threw it in]] and nobody bothered to change it.
* PetTheDog: Many, mostly concerning her relation with both her henchmen and Lagoon Company.
** The [[http://www.absoluteanime.com/black_lagoon/balalaika%5B2%5D.jpg smile]] she gives to Rock at the end of the Yakuza arc, which is one of the few times she gives an honest smile instead of TechnicallyASmile.
** The revelation of why she was discharged, [[spoiler:mainly, due to an international incident when she was photographed by media somewhere her unit shouldn't have officially been]], is a pet the dog moment for her since the reason she got photographed was because [[spoiler:she went out of her way to save a child.]]
* PopCulturedBadass: Quotes an 80's song while delivering one of her most brutal {{The Reason You Suck Speech}}es.
* PowerHair: Averted. She is powerful, {{badass}}, feared and a strategist but she has the long, flowing, slightly wavy tresses usually worn by weak and fragile [[DamselInDistress damsels in distress]]
* PreAsskickingOneLiner: Nice commie ones like "Comrades, raise your fists!" or "Cock your hammers!"
* ProperTightsWithASkirt: She wears black tights under her long business skirt.
* PsychoticSmirk: A common expression of her's as she's about to kill someone.
* RedOniBlueOni: Red to Mr. Chang's Blue.
* RenegadeRussian: It's TheNineties the nineties, she is a former Soviet [=VDV=] special forces commander and now a mafia queen.
* RousingSpeech: Gives one of these to her ''Vysotniki'' before leading them to avenge their comrades' deaths.
* ScarsAreForever: Justified, given their severity. Her face and body were badly burned during the Afghan War.
* ShutUpHannibal: Done to [[spoiler:Hansel]], with [[spoiler:a sniper rifle]]. She gives three words and a sound effect to deal with one of the creepiest little psychos you'll ever meet.
--> '''Balalaika:''' "I said KNEEL!" *BANG*
* SlasherSmile: When she's enjoying herself she sports a wide and scary grin.
* SmokingIsCool: Usually has a nice big cigar on hand. She also smokes Parliaments from time to time.
* StatuesqueStunner: She is on the taller side of the character spectrum, and has a very toned physique underneath her business suit.
* StillWearingTheOldColors: Continues to wear a Soviet military coat over her shoulders even after joining the mafia. She and her men also wear their old uniforms, as well.

* IdenticalStranger: The light novel mentions offhand that when he visited Beijing, he was mistaken for a celebrity. Wonder who that could have been?
* IHaveManyNames: It's played for laughs in the light novel. Biu would prefer that Chang not add "[[MakesJustAsMuchSenseInContext Master Ninja]]" to his repertoire of nicknames.
* MrFanservice: Without his glasses, he is very handsome; ''with'' the glasses he is very handsome.
* NervesOfSteel: Normally cheerful and emotive, this guy is also capable of being completely calm during a massive shootout. The only time he lost his cool was [[spoiler:when Eda told him he was an insect compared to the might of the United States.]]
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: The already mentioned Chow Yun-Fat.
* NotSoDifferent: He started out on the right side of the law, only to defect when by all counts he shouldn't have had to, and now serves as an OnlySaneMan for fellow criminals. Chang is more than happy to point this out to a horrified [[VillainProtagonist Rokuro]].
* OnlySaneMan: Generally acts as a voice of reason towards the other local crimelords, particularly [[BloodKnight Balalaika]].
-->Are we going to break this up and kill each other before we even get to the agenda? I can imagine the party over at the Justice Department if we did.
%%* ReasonableAuthorityFigure
* RedOniBlueOni: Blue to Balalaika's Red.
* RousingSpeech: Saddles his fellow crime heads with a villainous version, after the OnlySaneMan quote eventually accomplishes zilch. Two pages' worth can be found on the Quotes Page.
* UnwittingPawn: Most everyone knows that ''Chang'' is the true "ruler" of Roanapur, having the most power and influence. What they ''don't'' know is that [[spoiler:his benefactor is the CIA itself. The only reason he's allowed as much power is because the CIA makes use of his South-China drug and weapon trade routes for their own ends. It also explains why the Triad is the Church's biggest customer.]] [[TeethClenchedTeamwork This fact is not lost on him.]]
* ScarfOfAsskicking: Of the untied variety, hanging around the collar of his coat.
* SlasherSmile: Rarely done, but has one or two of these on occasion, usually accompanied by a cigarette between his teeth.
%%* TallDarkAndSnarky
* TheTriadsAndTheTongs: Mr. Chang is a Pak Tsa Sin (a high ranking officer) of the Kan Yi Fan, a fictional Triad based in Hong Kong.

!! Shenhua
[[quoteright:225:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shenhua_blacklagoon.jpg]]
->Voiced by: Creator/YukoSasaki (JP), Creator/SaffronHenderson (EN)

* CoolShades: Always wears shades.
* TheDragon: Though we've never seen Biu fight, he's highly enough ranked that he can (lightly) banter with his boss and occasionally discuss fairly personal matters.
* StraightMan: To Chang's "carefree mob boss act."
* TriadsAndTongs: He belongs to the Triad.

re-alphabetized an example; Boobs Of Steel describes a work as well as a character, and there is a girl in this series who has them

Unlike the others though, she's the only one who's arguably "stronger" than Revy, besting her whenever they fight.
