That was probably more of a case of Cowboy Bebop At His Computer, like when Disney forgot The Black Cauldron was their first film to use CGI.

* In the VideoGame/DoubleDragon series, this was done to 1995's Double Dragon V: The Shadow Falls with the release of 2018's VideoGame/DoubleDragonIV. From 1987 to 1990, Technos released the original trilogy of Double Dragon games with the second and third games being numbered accordingly. In 1992, Technos released Super Double Dragon, which was also a BeatEmUp game like the three previous entries. Even though it wasn't named "Double Dragon IV", many thought of Super as the official fourth installment of the series, albeit unnumbered. This also includes Tradewesta now defunct American video game publisher that brought over a couple of Double Dragon games to the US in the 80s and 90s, who went on to develop and release Double Dragon V: The Shadow Falls (with very little input by Technos during development), marketing it as the official fifth installment. Instead of being a beat 'em up game like the previous entries, The Shadow Falls is a FightingGame that was also a RecursiveAdaptation based on the 1993 Double Dragon animated series. After Creator/ArcSystemWorks acquired all of Technos' [=IPs=] in 2015Technos became defunct back in 1996, the former continued the Double Dragon series with the release of Double Dragon IV three years later. Not only did this confirm that Super wasn't the official unnumbered fourth installment after all, it also completely disregards The Shadow Falls as the fifth installment since [=ArcSys=] didn't label the 2018 [=IV=] game with the name "Double Dragon VI" instead.

I’m pretty sure them not counting Charles Martinet voicing Mario in a pinball table is self-explanatory. While he did voice him there first, at the end of the day, it’s a mere pinball table and thus not worth counting.

It was never disowned by Capcom themselves. Inafune also didn't said anything about canonicity and just said he didn't like it. It not being referenced is irrelevant since many other Japan only games which we know for a fact are canon in a franchise don't get referenced later on. SAR is also refererenced in the Robot Master Field Guide

VideoGame/YsIVMaskOfTheSun was released by Tonkin House for the [[UsefulNotes/SuperNintendoEntertainmentSystem Super Famicom, while VideoGame/YsIVTheDawnOfYs was released by Creator/HudsonSoft for the UsefulNotes/PCEngine Super CD (a third version was also planned for the UsefulNotes/MegaDrive, Platform/MegaDrive, but it was never released). VideoGame/YsVLostKefinKingdomOfSand was later developed by Falcom and exclusively for the SFC, and all the later Ys sequels followed the SFC games. The 2005 [=PS2=] remake of Ys IV was even based on the SFC version.
