* Oliver's BatmanGambit to PretendWereDead. It works so flawlessly it makes his FaceHeelTurn almost a letdown, as it would have been interesting to see how much he could have accomplished opposing Smokey for a whole arc instead of quickly becoming TheQuisling.

* Even Don gets one early on in ''Wish You Were Here'', albeit in a characteristically unpleasant way, when John is caught in barbed wire, and about to be infected by Crossed. The others have been shooting, trying to stop the Crossed, but now they're too close to John to keep shooting without risking hitting him, and everyone is reluctant at the thought of mercy-killing him. Don calmly takes a knife, and throws it to John, who, after a moment's pause, slits his own throat just as he's being infected. As the others stare in stunned shock, Don calmly tells them to fire, now that John is dead and they don't have to worry about an UnfriendlyFire incident, which they do after a second, wiping out the Crossed. Don then delivers a brutal BreakingSpeech, illustrating what just happened as the reason that they're drawing names for the upcoming sort at random rather than allowing volunteers: because volunteers tend to be the people they can't spare, and end up getting killed instead of the people that they ''can'' spare. Agree or disagree with him, it's Don's most impressive moment in the series.

** At one point, they come across a tribe of troglodyte-like Crossed who attack the group of five and kill two of them easily (including Bloom, who was capable of taking a Crossed child by surprise in the third Mimic issue). It seems that all hope is lost, until one of the remaining three blows his airhorn, stunning all the monsters around them (as they're unaccustomed to loud sounds) and letting the rest of his group get out alive.

* The climax of ''Wish You Were Here'': Shaky attempts to pull a RedemptionEqualsDeath by using himself as bait to keep the Crossed from chasing the others. Only to be ignored, with the Crossed continuing to chase after the ship with the surviving Cavaites onboard, only for that to be a BatmanGambit by Rab, as Seline blows up the ship, which is filled with oil, using the last claymore, taking out all of the Crossed while Rab and the others watch from the lifeboats that they had escaped in. Even after how they'd abandoned him, Shaky is left delirious with joy, and marvels that he'd never thought Rab had it in him to pull off something like that. In a meta sense, Simon Spurrier deserves some credit for having the Cavaites save themselves, rather than just have Shaky's attempted HeroicSacrifice do the trick and magically make up for everything he'd done up to that point, regardless of what do you think of him.

* The biker gang coalition in ''Yellow Belly'' actually is successfully able to defeat the Crossed in their confrontation with them. This is especially remarkable since it is so early in the outbreak and this is around the time the military and police are failing to contain their spread. [[spoiler:Unfortunately, a group of Crossed police officers proceed to attack them while they are distracted by punishing [[DirtyCoward Edmund]] and wipe them out.]]

** A villainous example with Yamada himself, as he remains unflappable throughout the arc. Despite finding himself in a hellish apocalypse, he remains cool and collected and completely focused on rescuing his daughter. His only response to learning this is global is to note that he has a bunker ready. [[spoiler:The only time he shows any weakness is when Hazuki gives him a ReasonYouSuckSpeech that ultimately drives him to suicide.]]

** Amanda also deserves one for [[spoiler:sawing off her own hand with barbed wire in order to escape Harold.]]

** At the end of that arc, Harry [[spoiler: faces his practically inevitable death at the hands of the Crossed with [[FaceDeathWithDignity a stiff upper lip.]]]]

* Jackson [[spoiler:killing Don with a thrown knife]] and thwarting the Cavaites' invasion of the Drift Fleet in WYWH.

* During the climax of the Haven arc, [[spoiler:despite losing a hand to a gunshot, [[HiddenAgendaVillain Sutter]] does ''not'' go down easily. Not only does he kill several Crossed with his pistol while bleeding from the stump, but he also manages to overpower another Crossed and kill him with his functioning arm.]]
* Oliver managing to [[spoiler:outwit Smokey and infect himself before he can be forced to give up any of the secrets he uncovered in Cheyenne Mountain]] in ''Quisling.''

* ''The Lesser of 2 Evils'' sees [[spoiler:Tyree and Richie both survive to the end and reunite because they both manage to land feet first in the river, the latter managing it despite being pushed off the bridge.]]

* Patient Zero in ''The Thin Red Line'' resists the effects of the Crossed virus through [[HeroicWillpower sheer willpower.]] [[spoiler:Unfortunately, [[NiceJobBreakingItHero Alistair has him tortured]] which causes him to give in to it.]]

* During the climax of ''3D'' [[spoiler:Elmer]] takes on a large horde of Crossed with his [[GatlingGood minigun]] to buy time for Preacher, Lori and Dr. Tang to escape by the boat. Even when he gets overwhelmed, he blows himself up with a grenade, taking out even more crazies at once.

* The opening battle of ''Wish You Were Here'' Volume 4, where, with little warning or preparation, the Cavaites -- all of them visibly scared out of their minds -- manage to kill three hundred attacking Crossed, give or take a few dozen, from [[spoiler:the Drift Fleet]] through a mixture of gunfire, a claymore mine, and pumping gasoline into the water, and tossing in a Molotov cocktail as the Crossed wade ashore. Making this even more impressive was how they'd just lot two of their best fighters in the third volume. The fact that they do lose several people undermines it though.

Beauregard Salt was certainly TheChessmaster and his plan successfully allowed for the Crossed to survive. [[spoiler:And in the end of ''Crossed +100'' sees one of his descendants [[TheBadGuyWins infect Bailey's army]] that had up to that point been [[CurbStompBattle wiping the floor with them.]]]]

* Genheim defying Bailey's orders and cutting the rope to the balloon where his son and Cautious are in, allowing them to escape the surrounded Murfreesboro, an action Bailey makes him pay for, [[spoiler:although given Bailey's plan to kill the Crossed outside, it kind of turns into a SenselessSacrifice]].

As Ian, Prince Harry and John are preparing to HoldTheLine for the others, Alec (a fairly unintelligent and clownish character) [[CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass suddenly throws a rock near the three Crossed]], making them turn their heads, at which point he throws more rocks to whack their backs so their leader is convinced the other two hit her when her back was turned and kills them with a cleaver, at which point Alec shows himself causing that Leader to chase him over a river bank, at which point the others toss a log into the leader, pinning her under the water, while Ian steps up and stomps the Crossed woman’s head flat without any of the dozens of other nearby Crossed knowing a thing. Ian’s inner monologue explicitly calls this a brief moment of triumph in a losing war.

* In ''Psychopath,'' Harold manages to perform a villainous example of this, as he is able to carry out his plan without a hitch up until the very last step. He wipes out the entire group of survivors he joins (bar Amanda) and Amanda doesn't realize what he's doing up until the moment he attempts to feed her Lori's remains. AxCrazy Harold may be, but he's also one hell of a ManupulativeBastard.

Making this even more impressive was how they'd just lot two of their best fighters in the third volume. The fact that they do lose several people undermines it though.
