* TogetherInDeath: Combined with a non-{{Yandere}} instance of TakingYouWithMe, having been told that if there isn't [[ThereCanBeOnlyOne one Hime]] left standing by the time it arrives, the [=HiME=] Star would crash to Earth and wipe it out, Natsuki decides to go off to confront her most important person, Shizuru. After a brief fight, Natsuki snaps Shizuru out of her PsychoLesbian phase with a CooldownHug and a BigDamnKiss, telling Shizuru that while she didn't feel quite the same way, she did love her in her own way. At this point, she orders her [[{{Mons}} Child, Duran]], to fire on Shizuru's Kiyohime, which, due to how [=HiME=] powers work, causes them both to die, as they're each other's most important people. They fade from existence in one another's arms, Shizuru saying "I'm fulfilled." [[spoiler: [[IGotBetter They get better]] the next episode.]]

* NrokenPedestal: Natsuki lost her mother at the age of 8, and spent the next few years training and investigating, trying to learn who had her mother killed and why. Well into the [[ThereCanBeOnlyOne [=HiME=] Carnival]], Natsuki meets with a representative to one of the two [[TheIlluminati Illuminati groups]] trying to control the situation, John Smith. Smith tells her that her mother had sold out her employers at the other group, District One, and had even taken money to sell Natsuki to the Searrs Foundation. Natsuki is driven to a HeroicBSOD afterwards, suffering a PsychosomaticSuperpowerOutage, the memory of her loving mother shattered. Natsuki's contact in District One, Sakomizu, who also worked with Saeko Kuga, tells Natsuki he believes that her mother made an error in judgment trying to protect her, not out of greed or avarice. Natsuki, after regaining her powers, says she'll believe in the mother in her heart.

* {{Gainaxing}}: On Mai, though interestingly ''Haruka'' actually has the largest bust of any female character (88cm) and mostly avoids this treatment.
** Maybe her bust is the biggest, but her cup size is obviously significantly smaller than Mai's. In fact, Yukariko the ''nun'' has the largest bust measurement (89 cm), but she's not as busty as Mai.

* WakeUpGoToSchoolSaveTheWorld: {{Deconstructed|Trope}}. At first, this is how things go, as the [=HiMEs=] mix boarding school antics with Orphan hunting, though Natsuki doesn't bother going to class because she's got other stuff going on. But the constant trashing of the school doesn't just SnapBack, and later on, both the [=HiMEs=] and other students stop going to class because school has stopped mattering in the face of all-out war. By the end, only Haruka cares about keeping the school going, and the fact that it's SeriousBusiness to her and only her leads to a major confrontation with Shizuru. [[spoiler: Then Natsuki has to retake her senior year because she missed so much class.]]

* MagicalGirlDeconstructionGenre: What kind of world would it be where a select number of girls are chosen and bequeathed magic abilities and can summon {{Mons}} powered by their connection to the Most Important Person in their life? And what happens when other outside parties learn about it and want to claim that power for themselves? To put it mildly, a massive psychological toll on those that have gotten mixed up in it. Additionally, going to school starts becoming less and less of a priority as the secret of the Hime looms larger and larger -- Fuuka Academy's classes are canceled as the plot approaches its climax.

* NotThatTheresAnythingWrongWithThat / SorryToInterrupt: Mai, to Natsuki, in episode 9. After hearing a scream from the beach, Mai runs over to the safety rail, and sees Takeda on top of Natsuki, her riding leathers unzipped and her face blushing. Mai apologizes for interrupting as she runs off, clearly thinking she's interrupted something intimate. After Natsuki beats Takeda unconscious, she catches up with Mai, who then says that since Natsuki never shows interest in guys, she was beginning to think other things about her, adding that there wasn't anything wrong with it in her view.

* BerserkButton: Every single girl has a "Most Important Person" whom you should ''never'' mess with.
** When [[spoiler: Mikoto (in reality, Shiho, but Mai doesn't realize this at the time)]] inadvertently kills [[spoiler: Takumi]], in episode 20 Mai's gets smashed. She gets [[RoaringRampageOfRevenge really, really pissed off by it.]]
** Insulting a girl's most important person is another. Shizuru does not take kindly to Natsuki being insulted, and Yukino and Haruka each feel the same way about the other being insulted.

** And between [[spoiler: the Searrs-attack and Mai's BerserkButton being pressed]], along with several other incidents, it gets bad enough that all the normals flee the school near the end of the anime.

* IllGirl: The best categorization for Takumi is a GenderFlip of this character.

** Mai Tokiha was a kind and emotionally strong girl who looked after her [[IllGirl constantly ill little brother with a weak heart]] by giving up her own childhood to work for his medical bills after losing both her parents. Having both that little brother ''and'' the boy she came to love die in rapid succession, as well as seeing that the one to blame is, supposedly, her best friend and sworn sister, can even break a saint like her into a nihilistic Result C.

** The most glaring example is Shizuru. Mai is told early on that Shizuru and Reito area power-couple, but we see a bevvy of fangirls fawning all over her with HeartShapedEyes. Shizuru's actual interests are with the one girl who doesn't {{Squee}} over her, Natsuki.

* BustChart: One of the promotional pieces is an official bust chart, featured in Megami magazine #55, of the student characters in swimsuit line in profile by breasts and with their specific breast sizes below them.

** It can be easy to forget, since [[ItWasHisSled Shizuru and Natsuki becoming an OfficialCouple]] is well known by fans, but there was actual ShipTease between Natsuki and Takeda, such as [[AccidentalPervert when he fell on her]] and her initial response was a LuminescentBlush. The first real indicator that Natsuki could be attracted to another girl was when she laid a BigDamnKiss on Shizuru in episode 25 as part of a CooldownHug.

* IHaveTheHighGround: Is there a time when Nagi's ''not'' hovering above everyone?
** Several times in relation to the headmaster, and a few more to the Obsidian Prince. Makes sense, since these are the only people he might consider his equals.

* BandageBabe: [[spoiler:Miyu, upon her resurrection.]] she emerges covered head to toe in bandage that cover her just barely.
