Can someone clean up the Headscratcher for "The Qunari and transgender"? Two tropers have been duking it out in there for a while, and the Flame War is getting really nasty since it touches on a very sensitive issue (transgender people). Rule Of Cautious Editing Judgement needs to be invoked big time.

Considering that all the previous Dragon Age titles have image comments relating to the blood motif, would it work if I editted this one to poke fun at the lack of blood motif? Ya know, to continue the gag?

I think we should, as the current one is fairly dull.

I've seen Downer Ending, The Bad Guy Wins, and Earn Your Bad Ending tropes listed but I've been looking for a couple days now and haven't been able to find any proof that this ending actually exists, not on Google, Youtube or the Bioware forums. Does anyone have any evidence that this ending is real? I'm just worried it might be an Urban Legend of Zelda.

The bad ending people described was a game over screen if you die while fighting Coyrpheus.

Should we then delete the aforementioned tropes from the page? The actual result isn't in the spirit of those tropes.

So, Tropers/Matt620 and I have been arguing for a few days now about the possibility of hashing out a Golden Ending example for this game. I'm for adding one and Matt is against it (I think). We are especially at each others' throats about "Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts".

You can check here for how the endings stack up to each other.

My reasons for including the trope:

  • There are clear unambiguous "good" outcomes. While many of the outcomes are a Morton's Fork, where you have to sacrifice one good outcome for a preferred one, some outcomes are just objectively better. For example:
  • If (softened) Leliana is made Divine, the new Chantry and mage reforms wind up working and dissent is resolved peacefully. Mages enjoy unprecedented acceptance, and there's no indication of war. Cassandra, on the other hand, always leads to mage dissent no matter what, and Vivienne only enforces her reforms with blood.
    • An alternate Golden outcome can be if the Templars were saved instead of the mages. However, in this case, the Templars have a pretty positive ending no matter what. As a whole, I could even call their ending better than the Mage ending, but taken on its own, there's really no "Golden" variation because the Templars have no possible negative outcome (from what we've found so far).
  • In "Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts", I argue that there are three major positive/negative factors: 1) which potential rulers live, die or live happily 2) whether or not elves receive more rights and 3) whether or not Orlais is at peace afterwards. My argument for Briala/Celene reconciliation being the "Golden" outcome is that this leads to the most positive outcome for those three factors. In every other factor, either two of the rivals are dead, one is plotting revenge, a war is on the horizon, or elves get no improvements. Celene/Briala reconciliation is the ONLY one where all three of those things happen.
  • The Wardens are screwed no matter what. Either the ones that joined the Inquisition rebel against Weisshaupt or Wesshaupt erupts in a bloody civil war.
  • The Inquisition endings are all positive no matter what.

Well, that's my reasoning. As I said, my argument is that there's a clear "better" outcome for some of these choices, with some being somewhat ambiguous or based in preference (for example, Matt620 has expressed a distaste for allowing Celene to get away with the Elven massacre). But, other than that, I think my argument has merit.

If you're wondering why I removed the Idiot Ball entry about "Here Lies the Abyss", it's being hashed out in the Discussion for Dragon Age: Inquisition – Non-Playable Characters. Short form, though, potentially exiling them is to protect them from being manipulated further. They were going to be used to conquer Orlais, so they're removed from Orlais. Also, it's not permanent - they were exiled from Ferelden once, as well. If the next Blight reaches or occurs in Orlais, they'll come back. Either choice has risks, but so long as there's no actual Blight going on, it's really arguable which one is smarter. Which is the point, I suspect.

It may actually be a running gag for the whole series. I wrote an entry on the DAII Funny page about them, and while I haven't making specific note this time they're turning up in some really weird circumstances. Like the guy crushed by cheese in Crestwood, the miniature cheese mine in the Western Approach (there are little models of people chipping away stuck all over it), and the Wedge of Destiny. There are others. I'm gonna start searching.

In short, yeah, definitely.

Unfortunately, while plot related cases of "Lost Forever" are clearly designated by the game, some quest related ones are not. In particular, the Bioware forums are filled with angry comments about several Requisition side-quests in the Hinterlands, which depend on items which can only be randomly dropped by the mages and templars which roam the area... Except that, if you've finished a certain couple of main story quests (both of which you're likely to receive many, many hours before you ever get those Requisitions, since they only appear after one that requires a resource from a high-level area) which mean mages and templars won't respawn again. Already finished off all the mobs? Your choices are to either restart the game or reload a save from before then, potentially losing dozens of game hours. Given that the fans of Bioware games tend to be completionists by nature, this didn't go well by them.

I'm not too sure about this one. The Requisition sidequests are infinite; you pick them up in every region, and the second you complete one, you get another. Not being able to complete one of an infinite series of minor sidequests in one out of ten regions seems fairly minor and smacks of fan overreaction. Sure, the quest itself is lost forever, but I'd like to tone down the language of the entry.

Sooo... this will be complicated. In this video the art director for DA:I cites Northern Renaissance art as a major inspiration to the art style of the game. Now Northern Renaissance art was a trove of memento mori in art. This wouldn't be important but DA:I has just the right amount of skulls lying around (specific examples: skull with a gem in its eye on the war table, skull in a birdcage in Sera's place in the tavern, the skull Iron Bull holds on his tarot card is a different symbolism but I'll include it anyway) for innocuous ornamental purposes to where they're at least invoking the same imagery as the Renaissance artists. Now the closest trope we have to memento mori is We All Die Someday which seems to only apply to works where the inevitability of death has a clear and present influence on the story (for clarity, the memento mori in Renaissance art was seldom so relevant to the subject of the work). So with that in mind I'm not sure if I'm in the clear to list DA:I's usage of memento mori as an example of We All Die Someday since it's not particularly plot relevant.

Thoughts?

No matter what I say there is a 40% percent chance I'm not being serious, and if I sound like I'm not then I probably am. Hide / Show Replies

Tricky.

Well, if We All Die Someday isn't a theme in Inquisition, then it isn't a theme in Inquisition. They're just copying the art style. Put it on Trivia under something?

I didn't delete it, though I'm glad it was deleted. Elves do not specifically represent any RL ethnicity - they could just as easily be Jewish as blacks or First Nations. Saying that Bioware was whitewashing an unreleased character because elves are "supposed to be Po C" is a bit overblown.

That the person who made that image doesn't realize how racist that is is sort of an Unfortunate Implication in and of itself.

nighttrainfm Since: May, 2010
Jun 12th 2014 at 3:25:58 AM •••

Wait, how is it racist to try and UN-whitewash someone? She was brown in her earliest known concept art, and at some point they made a decision to undo that.

It's not like this hasn't happened before - look at Isabela in promo art, the Art of Thedas, comic covers...or Fenris / Sebastian / Velanna in HODA.

madgodzulcan Since: Sep, 2013
Jun 12th 2014 at 6:46:36 AM •••

I think the point he is trying to make was it is just as bad to make a white person brown as it is to whitewash someone.

nighttrainfm Since: May, 2010
Jun 15th 2014 at 5:43:39 PM •••

Yeah, but the thing about that argument is that one actually happens a lot more often than the other. I mean, that was four different characters in this series alone (seriously, look at Velanna in Awakening and then look at how pink she is in Heroes).

FaceofEvil Since: Oct, 2010
Jun 16th 2014 at 3:43:01 PM •••

First off, concept art is not a contract. It's not a promise that the characters will look a certain way. Have you looked at the concept art for most of the cast in the original Dragon Age? They went through a LOT of changes on their way to the final product. Merrill's concept art for DA 2 doesn't even look like the same character. Sera's original look retained far more of the DA 2 elven look, but you don't seem to be complaining about that.

Secondly, as madgodzulcan said, turning a white character black in order to "fix" her is just as racist as whitewashing a black character. It's just slightly less offensive because it's misguided instead of hateful.

And thirdly, whatever issues you may have with the depiction of black characters in Ho DA (which isn't even made by Bioware) and elsewhere, two wrongs don't make a right. You can't address racism by being just as racist.

So in a couple places on these pages (Tear Jerker for one, but I saw others) someone noted that Morrigan gets enslaved by Flemeth and killed if you let her drink from the well, but that... didn't seem to happen for me. Could someone who knows what choices you have to make to get that outcome please make a note of them? Because that's a pretty major point.

In hindsight? This could have been avoided.

Don't create redirects in main. See How To Create A Works Page.

You can make the page easier to navigate simply by putting links to VideoGame.Dragon Age Inquisition at the top. There's also an ongoing effort to find new namespace icons; see here.

To whoever added the current custom title: DON'T.

If you submit the custom title to wick "VideoGame/DragonAgeInqusition", the custom title will no work when linked from other pages (e.g. from Franchise.Dragon Age), only on the page itself. It's a known bug that is being fixed. Until then, only submit wicks for custom titles like his "Videogame/DragonAgeInqusition" (small "g"). Then it will work everywhere, regardless of whether you link this page with CamelCase namespace or not.

We now have to wait until the admins reset all recent custom titles again, because once it's been submitted with a camelcase namespace, it cannot be fixed unless reset.
