I think this needs a Page Image since No Problem with Licensed Game has one. Should we do it?

Should we just get rid of all the examples and just put in a link to Angry Video Game Nerd's video gallery? I swear, something like 1/3 of these examples end with, "Just look at what AVGN had to say in his review of the game!"

The fact that the Beavis and Butthead Genesis game just changed from the other side of the spectrum to here should more than likely be enough for agreement that yes, he has wayyyyyyy too much presence on this page.

Where to add non-videogame examples? Like Harrison's Choose Your Own Adventure book You Can Be The Stainless Steel Rat based on a series of novels?

Not on this page, for sure. You can ask in the Trope Finder, but this page is only for games.

I feel like we should stop adding games that are merely stated as "Mediocre" to the list, and keep the ones that are genuinely bad - at the same time we can comment in the intro that "Licensed games are often mediocre, but this is for the BAD ones."

Would be an issue for the Trope Repair Shop, really. And unless its backlog is resolved it won't be approved for discussion.

  • Futurama: The Game, while not a terrible game, is merely So Okay, It's Average by most fans' standards. While the graphics do look rather nice and the character designs translate well into 3D, its main saving grace is its hilarious story, which was penned by the actual writers and performed by the voice actors of the show. Not only does it manage to lampshade a few aspects of the show, but it makes fun of a few video game clichés as well. Luckily, all of the cutscenes (and some filmed gameplay) were strung together and released as an unofficial episode, which is available as a special feature on the second film release, The Beast With a Billion Backs.

Should this really be on here? The entry has more praise that it does bringing up flaws, and just about the only flaw listed is a very vague "it's only average." If nothing else, I think this should be re-written. I mean, it says on the page that this should probably only cover egregious examples.

I write stupid crap about naked people.

That quote just reeks of Small Reference Pools. Halo, Mass Effect and Metal Gear don't have stories?

I will say some of the things in the Gundam game section are... a bit misleading. Beyond crossfire it doesn't list that many 'bad' games, only alluding that there are a ton of shitty ones. But after going over reviews on Gamefaqs, Gamespot, and a few other sites, most reviews are average, with some getting moderate praise such as Gundam Versus series, The Blue Destiny series on the Saturn, The One Year War on the PS 2, Encounters in Space, almost all the SD Gundam G Generation series, and even MS Saga: A New Dawn got moderately decent reviews. The only standout BAD titles I can think of or find are Crossfire, the Dynasty Warrior Gundam series, and Gundam Assault Survive (But the other 4 PSP series games were all praised).

It appears people here aren't following the "egregious examples only" rule. If a licensed game is So Okay, It's Average then it's a waste of space. If it's an otherwise good game with a couple fatal flaws, it doesn't belong here. This is for famously disastrious licensed games.

Someone had the gall to add Goldeneye 1997 with this list, even admitting it to be "an interesting case... to be fair... there were a lot of great things about it... it was widely popular and influential... but...". There's a trope for just that sort of thing, it's called Seinfeld Is Unfunny. It is not this trope.

I know Your Mileage May Vary & all, but some of the examples in the exception folder are... quite dubious. The Shrek and Avatar games got a lot of hate last time I checked.

Which Shrek games are you talking about? Granted, some are bad, but surely not all of them. And "Avatar" led to a page with various things having that word with the title, but I assume you are either talking about Avatar The Last Airbender (which has a few) or James Camerons Avatar (which only has one game to my knowledge, with another still in the works last I checked. Correct me if I'm wrong on that).

EDIT: Why am I not paying attention to the dates again?

Should The Legendof Zelda CDI Games and Hotel Mario count? They weren't made by Nintendo. Mabye the Mario Edutainment games count too.

The CDI games and The Mario Edutainment games count in my opinion, but I suggest getting more feedback before going ahead with it.

I think they qualify, because Nintendo still allowed Phillips to make these games to begin with, which sort of fits the definition.

Heck, the article on Hotel Mario has a picture of the cover with the caption saying to call it a Licensed Game and not talk about it anymore. Anyone else willing to say anything?

I'm not a gamer, but I think the definition of video gaming generation is being misused here. From what I understand, the generations only apply to consoles, and not computers like PCs and Commodore 64s.

I always thought it applied to computer games as well as consoles. It doesn't have to be released on a console to be part of a console's generation, as long as it is released on someting like a computer, so I don't think the term is being misused at all. And before you ask, computer games do count as video games, and thus are no less accepted here than any other list of games in a certain category.

That's just my thoughts, though. What do you think of this?

Dosen't it suck when your favorite license has a no-better videogame the game from a license you don't even like? Suppose exibit A had a game that was disliked by more people then the game from exibit B, and you woulden't bother with exibit B's game because you have hated exibit B. . . but you loved exibit A.

Okay I think what you're saying is, that it sucks when a work that you dislike has a better game than a work that you do like.

So, why is that a reason to cut the trope?

Probably because looking at the trope hurts certain peoples' reputations
