Re: Wandering Son
I took that series off the Girls' Love page because the consensus I've heard from yuri fandom is it's not very yuri. If it was yuri, that series would have gotten a lot more attention since the author also did Aoi Hana.
In the point that was provided, it was self-admitted that the series itself wasn't a good fit. Based on these points, the series should be taken off. The Queer Romance trope looks to be a much better fit for that series assuming there is some focus on romance.
and that's how Equestria was made!Subject: Venus Versus Virus
I've only seen a bit of this series but have heard this series suffers from a huge amount of Bait-and-Switch Lesbians to the point that it's not actually part of the genre. Can anyone confirm or deny this? I may have to take it down simply due to its disputed nature.
and that's how Equestria was made! Hide / Show RepliesHave seen the anime, but not the manga, and yes, the anime hardly falls into GL. However, Unknown Troper referred to the manga ending, and the anime was Cut Short and had a Gecko Ending, so I cannot confirm or deny it.
I'm thinking of re-hauling this page and here are my major ideas:
- Working on the first paragraph and maybe splitting it to be more reflective of how the genre is used as Shoujo, josei, and seinen as well as the fact there aren't really any Shōnen yuri animes. (Kashimashi Girl Meets Girl is the only Shōnen yuri anime I know of)
- There also should be some mention of how the genre is growing.
- In the couples paragraph, I'll probably make mention of the Hot for Student pairings since that's another popular yuri pairing although by no means disproportionate to yuri.
In particular, I'm going to challenge the fifth paragraph as there seems to be a lot more canon happy endings nowadays than in the past.
(Warning for spoilers).
A list sorting the anime/manga/video games sections regarding how they treat their main relationship. I'm leaving out series where the main relationship may still yet defined or series that I haven't watched.
The list:
Happy Continuing Relationship or Happy End
- Kannazuki No Miko
- Kashimashi Girl Meets Girl
- Revolutionary Girl Utena
- Strawberry Panic
- Blue Drop: Maiorita Tenshi (Manga)
- Shoujo Sect
- The Mikos Words And The Witches Incantations
- Iono The Fanatics
- Ame-iro Kouchakan Kandan
- Girl Friends
- Gokujou Drops
- Strawberry Shake Sweet
- Chirality
- Octave
- Stray Little Devil
- First Love Sisters
- Girl X Girl X Boy
- Hanjuku Joshi
- Junsui Adolescence
- Sono Hanabira Ni Kuchizuke Wo
Bad end
- Yami To Boushi To Hon No Tabibito
- Blue Drop: Tenshitachi no Gikyoku (Anime)
- Ice
- Devilman Lady
Strictly subtext or left wide open
- Maria-sama Ga Miteru
- Candy Boy
- Strike Witches
- Miyuki-chan in Wonderland
- Koihime Musou
- Re: Cutey Honey
- Kurogane Puka Puka Tai
- Hayate Cross Blade
- Steel Angel Kurumi 2
- Aoi Shiro
So basically 20 (happy confirmed endings) versus 14 (unconfirmed or unhappy endings). Mind you, there are some series particularly in the past that haven't been recorded by Yuri Fan tropers. It does however, make me convinced that the fifth paragraph should be more nuanced of how the yuri genre has evolved from the past since happy canon relationships are more common nowadays.
Let me know if anyone has any thoughts regarding a potential re-haul of the page.
Edited by CBanana and that's how Equestria was made! Hide / Show RepliesThe Utena one is only confimed happy in the movie, isn't it? The others (TV and manga) end with Utena gone with Anthy either searching for her or not searching for her since she's now with Akio.
And yeah, the list does lean a lot toward the newer stuff. I think Devilman Lady is the oldest one there with Utena's as second oldest? No Oniisama E, Shiroi Heya No Futari, Mayas Funeral Procession, etc.
Edited by ServbotI always consider the movie an extension of the TV series and I haven't read the manga. YMMV as always.
I think Oniisama E is the oldest with Devilman Lady as the second oldest.
Edited by CBanana and that's how Equestria was made!Oniisama E doesn't seem to be listed above.
And... I screwed up. Utena is actually older than Devilman Lady, so our list is just Yuri stuff from the mid-90s and beyond. <<
Oniisama E is listed on the main Girls' Love page. I just didn't list it in the discussion because I've never seen it.
and that's how Equestria was made!Ah, okay. So yeah. Our oldest is Early 90s. We should probably add more of the stuff from the bad old days to show the shift pre- and post-Utena in regards to general depiction of yuri. <<
The older examples will inevitably fill themselves out through Wiki Magic. In a few days, I'll work on the Girls' Love description so that it reflects the ideas I proposed. That is of course providing that no major objections to my ideas are posted.
and that's how Equestria was made!Alright, I've made the changes I was talking about. While I appreciate what the creator of this page did, she was a yaoi fan who missed some of the subtleties of the yuri genre so hopefully this fixes it.
P.S. Flame away at me!
and that's how Equestria was made!I kinda missed the whole discussion because it didn't show up on my watchlist, but I think the edits are constructive enough. Happy yuri endings are definitely becoming more common, and it's a good thing, let's celebrate it. ^^
