Okay I feel as though we need to change the image for the Freudian Excuse page. Like, part Joker’s whole shtick is his Multiple-Choice Past and lying for manipulation so this isn’t exactly the gets trope for this

Why does a Freudian Excuse only count if something traumatic happened in childhood or adolescence? What's the equivalent trope for when an adult has something horribly traumatic happen to them that drives them into villainy?

Can't we add Real life Examples? we know that real life Killers and corrupt politicians count.

Does this necessarily have to be about villains? At first glance, I thought this was about characters developing bizarre traits because of this trope.

I agree, Also I must point out that "Mommy Issues" and "Daddy Issues" must be about a villain.

Mommy/Daddy Issues got cut due to almost no one using it about villains, and if people did use it as villain-only, it'd be a duplicate of this.

It doesn't necessarily have to be full-on villainous, but it has to at least be explaining negative behavior. After all, you don't need an "excuse" for "Alice is heroic," you know?

A character could have Mommy/Daddy Issues and not be a villan. So this page should not just focus on villans.

The trope Mommy Issues was villain-exclusive. But the colloquial use of Mommy Issues isn't. Hence the reason the trope was cut.

Oh kay, however I think this page should focus on Freudian Excuse/Mommy Issues/Daddy Issues in general istead of judt for villans

I have a suggestion: changing the name from Freudian Excuse to Freudian Explanation. What happened to villains in the past is not an excuse so much as an explanation.

Is there a trope for an excuse why a villain (or a bad person who isn't a villain) became a villain that doesn't demand that they had a crap sack childhood? perhaps there parents spoiled the the future villain while he was a child and now believes he is simply entitled to things.

I think that kind of excuse would work better for a smaller scale villain, like a Jerk Jock or Alpha Bitch. Even then, it technically might still count for this trope because rather than being abused, the villain is just a product of extremely lax parenting. Take Regina George from Mean Girls for example—her mother tries to be her best friend rather than being an actual parent. It's not abusive, but it's still bad parenting.

It 's the new TV Tropes TV show, I think. Don't know much about it. Not sure the new traffic the page is getting isn't a double-edged sword, so to speak: I haven't checked the history yet, but there's an unseemly amount of Natter on the page, and my cynical mind suspects that maybe some of it wasn't there before the guys in charge linked the entire site to the one trope. Got one or two unmarked spoilers, too.

Now, it's late, I've got math class all week, I'm lazy, I'm not at my computer at the moment, I'm lazy, and it's hell editing a page on an iPod Touch, so I won't be doing any fixing-up 'till at least tomorrow. Once I have a good excuse to be on my computer, though, I'll be on this like fleagle flies on a flat-faced Floogle horse (couldn't think of anything original, sorry).

Ponders too much; thinks too little. Currently goes by Knowlessman.

Hence the post I made. I wanted to consult you guys before the video went live.

The videos are not permanent. The intention is to leave the embed there temporarily and then either move it down the page, or locate the link within a button, or whatever people more influential than me decide. They're currently working on forming a consensus.

This is supposed to be something you have input on, so if you have notes about Echo Chamber, PM me. There's no reason why you can't have a say in the direction they take. I can't please everyone, but I will certainly listen.

I've replaced "unemphatic sociopaths" with "uncaring sociopaths". I think the original poster must have meant "unempathetic", but it's not a commonly used word so I hesitated to put it in. Any thoughts on word choice?

An episode of Echo Chamber is scheduled to be released on Sunday which is about this trope.

Before the release, I thought it would be a good idea to consult with the Tropers who’ve adopted this page. I have a good understanding of the trope, but I thought I would get some input from you before we go live.

What are the old debates about how the trope is defined? How can I avoid accidentally digging one of them back up? What is the most important aspect of the trope that I need to demonstrate?

Since we go live on Sunday, I can’t make any promises that I can incorporate your suggestions, but I will do my best to portray the trope accurately and succinctly.

@Caswin: i have agreed on both points.

With NCIS i'll seen Perspective Flips Fics that believably turn Ari into a woobie and Ziva into a deranged Daddy Girl Psycho Lesbian. but that might just be his leather pants for you.
