Is the "Deadpan" in the title The Artifact? Aside from the fact that tons of examples across the site just treat this as The Snarker, the description and laconic don't really make any mention of being Deadpan, just snarky.

I actually think the deadpan should be considered a necessary requirement, even though the description has not really given weight to that aspect. Which may be part of the reason that the trope is so overused on the wiki. Current usage on the wiki is so inflationary, it's meaning has been diluted even beyond The Snarker to just Snark.

The heading at the top of the page currently reads "Dead Pan Snarker". How did that happen, and can we change it back pronto? I mean, it's equally as incorrect as writing "not able" when you mean "notable".

It's because someone linked it wrong, don't worry about it.

A message to all tropers

If you try to be a Deadpan Snarker all the time in real life, you're an annoying person. Please, only save it for the best occasions.

Thank you.

I think this trope's getting overused. Now it's applied to anyone who's regularly sarcastic. Problem is, there are plenty of people pegged as this trope who only fulfill the 'snarker' part of it, not the 'deadpan' part.

People who are hammy and act sarcastic (like "NOOO REALLY? You don't say!" or variants) are still being called this, when they're not deadpan at all.

Agreed. This category has become so broad that it's basically meaningless now. Especially the Comic Book section. It seems to be a generic gather-all for any character who cracks jokes.

Hellboy and Sonic, deadpan snarkers? I'm mildly surprised that nobody has added Joker yet.

Came in here to say that. People seem to be completely disregarding the whole "deadpan" bit.

I can't be the only one who thinks of this trope and thinks "Tony Snark" first.

Any reason why the caption on the picture keeps changing?

I've see it change a total of 5 times. We should pick something and stick with it.

How about something like this? Although, it's not quite Deadpan, and might work better for the Live TV example section: http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/46206661/2675135

I'm not sure where to put image picking discussion...But that image REALLY needs to go. It's just so ugly.

I'm not sure that a character having one moment of deadpan snarkiness should earn them a place on this page, but it seems like it does. Am I dreaming?

Well... Can someone do a "Widepan Snarker" or "Fade-out Snarke"? Since I suppose that the title is defined by the panning of the camera?

I think this thing has been getting a little bit of a snarl recently, and that many of the examples are, and never were, deadpan. Deadpan is having almost no inflection or indication of a joke being present. It would cut the page down to almost nothing if we eliminated all the examples that weren't actually deadpan, so I propose that we simply change the name to "Snarker."

This is a topic for the Trope Repair Forum. It would be better to zap the bad examples than to change the definition. When a definition starts chasing the examples, it is a clear sign that another trope is present.

Can you do that for me? I'm really not too big on the whole troping thing.

My interpretation was that the term deadpan refers to either the character maintaining a straight face while s/he says a witty remark or the sarcasm of said remark. I personally agree that the definition should not be changed, but I also think that most examples fit the trope and shouldn't have another trope made just for them.
