Find a Trope:
open"Set Switch Scene"
So, I know that a Set Switch Song is included in musicals to cover scene changes, but I wondered if there's a version of the trope for straight plays (i.e. a non-musical-number scene written to cover a scenery change).
For example, recent editions of Noises Off include a scene immediately after the backstage chaos of Act 2, where to cover the set rotation, Tim, the stage manager, addresses the audience and apologizes for the late start (they're performing Act 1 of the Show Within a Show again), replacing the second Intermission from earlier editions.
openDid you just call me "dad"?
Character A is a parental figure, Parental Substitute or otherwise proxy familial figure to Character B. At some point, Character B has a slip of the tongue and calls Character A "mom", "dad" or something similar (or any other familial term, as appropriate), to varying degrees of surprise from involved parties.
openRequests for Trope Recommendations Live Action TV
Hi, new troper here, just wondering if you could make any trope recommendations for the following things in an Urban Fantasy book series I recently finished reading: -Something like the Brocken Masquerade, except it's less that no one knew of the supernatural, and more that most people did not know how dangerous/powerful it was. -A 'it's not just an urban legend, it actually happened' trope, for when something is thought to just be a rumour but it actually happened: a story used to scare children into behaving turning out to be real, etc. -A trope pertaining to the idea of natives being confined to ghettoes/reservations, in the case of this series subverted/inverted. -Something like Blue and Orange Morality, except not about the non-humans ideas of right and wrong, and not as extreme at Bizarre Alien Psychology. If you could give me any suggestions, that would be great!
openAdventure aftermath plot
Do with have something for stories which are about the aftermath of another adventure? Sort of a super trope to Late to the Tragedy
- Death of a Hero is a TTRPG about an adventuring party remembering a member who died during their adventure.
- Video Game/Ikenfell has flashbacks to the main character's sister's adventures at the eponymous Wizarding School.
- The main character of Littlewood is a hero who's just defeated an evil wizard, and is tasked with rebuilding everything that was destroyed.
openDnd but not
There's some sort of Dungeons and Dragons parody game, but it's always called something else. Usually something along the lines of "(Something) & (Something beginning with the same letter)"
Most common in Western Animation
openAmbiguous Parent Videogame
Do we have a trope for when one half of a child’s parents could actually multiple people and is determined from previous events?
Like in a dating sim, if the protagonist had a child, the other parent would always be whatever romance option they chose in the main game.
Or specifically, in Dragon Age: Inquisition Kieran’s mother will always be Morrigan, but his father could be a male Warden, Alistair, or Loghain.
openOut and Proud
Do we have a trope for a character who's happy about their sexuality/gender? (In essence the contrast of Gayngst.)
Edited by MovieNut14open"they look like very good friends"
Two characters are gay and in a relationship, but in-universe, people assume that they are "just good friends", even when they are seen doing romantic things
openOnly one person does the job? Western Animation
Trying to find a trope for WesternAnimation.I Elvis Riboldi:
Example:
- Elvis' mom, Ireland is the only mailwoman in the town of Icaria (the creators stated so), which is implied In-Universe to be a large city. No-one else is ever seen doing the same job as her, so it's implied she has an impossible feat.
Other than Two-Teacher School is there such a trope for when a profession should logically have multiple people doing it but doesn't?
openYou Have Alerted The Horde Videogame
Is there a trope where sound is used to alert a horde of zombies, alien locusts or other types of swarming hostiles, be it a intentional distraction or misfortune accident?
Pretty much every zombie game/flick with runner type zombies has at least one scene where someone makes a noise and then the horde begins to attack.
openObtain an arm, gain control of it
Basically, if a person picks up a severed arm, either a biological one, a robotic facsimile, or something with a superficial resemblance - such as Welch Vineyard's "pointer" - they somehow manage to gain fine control over it as if it was their own arm, even if it formerly belonged to their most hated enemy. They don't even need to attach it to anything, they just need to hold it in their hand and it becomes perfectly animate.
Note that this isn't Helping Hands. This is about normal, run-of-the-mill severed limbs (or facsimiles thereof) that somehow manage to work in sync with the person holding them despite not having any apparent means of doing so.

"I am the first woman/minority/ queer person/combination of this/ whatever in this position? Cool, but personally that doesn't mean much for me."
(Not having anx problem with your personal identity, but preferring to ignore it.)
openAngry at loved one for leaving
A character resents a loved one — a sibling, a parent, a romantic partner, a close friend — for leaving them, even in a context where this wasn't the other person's fault or this resentment is otherwise irrational (which can range from the other party having to move away for work to them outright dying). The first character may or may not be aware that this resentment isn't fully rational.
openFranchise-Wide Signature Scene
Is Signature Scene the right trope for "this scene is guaranteed to appear in every work of this franchise"?
Specifically, pretty much every Ghost in the Shell work has some variation on "the Major soloes a giant tank".
Edited by Chabal2openCrazy story is true
Is there a trope for when a character tells a crazy, unbelievable story that no one thinks is real, only to prove it in fact happened in the end.
- According to Jim: One episode had Jim claim to have met Erik Estrada once, but his family doesn't believe him. He goes through great lengths to prove his claim, ending up in the hospital. At the end of the episode, Erik Estrada shows up and admits to have seen Jim, proving him right.
openDo we have a trope for deliberately opposing phrases?
Do we have a trope for deliberately opposing phrases?
- Forget Me Not: My Organic Garden: After getting an Excellent Liver:
Woman in Black: She created soul-bearing fruit on trees, and I used my own soul to create trees to bear fruit.
openCharacterization Trope
I'm looking for a trope to fit Series. The Blacklist, Series.Agents Of SHIELD, Series. The Good Doctor and Series. The Flash 2014.
Basically, is there a trope for where an episode has a conflict, but there's no Big Bad causing it, and the episode is more about character study than a villain?
An unseen character is believed to be one race (usually white) but when they show up they're revealed to be another. Similar to Gender Misdirection.
