openReligions Based on Works Web Original
I remember there being a Just for Fun page about religions based on various works. What was it called?
EDIT: Found it! It was Intellectual Property Religion.
Edited by AcidManekiopenBackwards Shirt of Infidelity
A character is forced to flee from an infidelity and is in such a rush they don't put all their clothes on or make obvious mistakes when getting dressed. This is used as evidence that sex took place, especially if they're already being suspected.
Wardrobe Flaw of Characterization, or something more specific?
opencharacter cares for other secretly and then is revealed
QUEENS GAMBIT NETFLIX SERIES SPOILERS AHEAD:
Hello all, so I was wondering if there is a name for the following trope:
- The protagonist discovers that a character from the past was "secretly" following his work/admiring him, or doing something for his well being secretly, so it is very powerful (sometimes after death or separation)
(this happens on Last episode of Queens Gambit series, when Beth goes to the basement again and finds out Mr Sheibel was following her career). This was so powerful to me, broke me into tears.
Also happens on other movies for example when the protagonist find his best friend is secretly reading a book to improve relationship, or help cancer patients, etc
Didn't find this trope on tvtropes website so I was wondering does it even exists? Thanks!
Edited by WindaveopenFresh Clue variant?
So I'm working on gathering tropes for 7-Second Riddles and I've noticed a common theme is that murder culprits will set up the room with food to suit their story, only to be caught thanks to the food being too fresh to have been set out hours ago like they always claim. Is this a variant of Fresh Clue, or is it a different trope?
openIgnoring a group-based insult to focus on the fact that it insulted the person you don't like
Do we have a dialogue trope for exchanges that take a form like
B: *turns to C* Ouch, A called you a squabbling child.
openI've taken to calling it the Gogeta Paradox Anime
It's basically when an official, non-canon work like Anime movies and the like introduce something that COULD be canon yet isn't for no explained reason. Named after Gogeta of Dragon Ball Z's Fusion Reborn, a fusion of Goku and Vegeta that uses the Fusion Dance, a canonical technique that birthed Gotenks in the show. Also known as Schroedinger's Canon. Since the technique exists canonically and the Fusees are capable of using it, we must assume that Gogeta is both canon and non-canon.
openThrow the competition
You decide to throw the game and let your opponent win because you feel bad for them, and they deserve it.
openX, but too x
Whatever trope matches this quote from Sponge Bob Square Pants?
"That was very cute, girls!...In fact, it's too cute. You're out."
openPretend to mimic a photo
We get a close-up of a photo of someone that is being examined by someone else, then they lower the photo to reveal that person striking the same pose as the photo.
open"When I say we're doing this, I mean 'you're doing this'."
Needed for Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel!, when Athena enters Claptrap, this is what basically what Jack says when Athena talks about "we", because she's the one doing the job for him
Edited by MaladyopenEnemies in the first game, none in the sequel Videogame
Where there are baddies or harmful creatures in the first game, but there are no apparent dangers in the second game.
What Adaptation trope would this be, if any? It may sound odd at first, but this is precisely the case for the William and Sly games (which I intend to make a page for in a few weeks). The first game has creatures which can harm you,and even a boss fight however, they are only called back to in the 2nd game. In fact, no monsters, not even the mentioned gnomes, appear in the sequel.
Edited by BlackFaithStaropenUnknown type of cut
Which type of scene cut involves this dialogue?
"They'll think twice before coming back!"
"We've thought about it."
openExpensive Clothes Return Live Action TV
A character buys expensive clothes with the intention of hiding the tag, wearing them for a special occasion, then returning them.
Usually doesn't work too well.
openFake Accent (kind of)
An actor/actress was born in a foreign country (let's say Germany for the example) and is of that nationality, but they immigrated to another. Now, they did so as a kid, so they don't really have a German accent. They stay in their new country and become famous, but for some reason or another, they often star in roles of German characters, despite having no real accent and they are able to pass as an American/Brit/wherever they immigrated to. Now, because Reality Is Unrealistic, the casting director believes no one will believe it, so they have to adopt a mock accent as the character for a nationality they already are, yet don't have in real life (though the accent may seep into real life for them over time). An example that I found was of James Hong under Fake Nationality, but I wonder if there's anything more specific
Edited by arimediumopenApparently funny joke
There's a joke and some characters in-universe, most likely humans, and also theaudience just don't understand it, while others, for example aliens or robots, think it's incredibly funny.
openA split personality based off an existing personality
Subtrope of Split Personality when the alternate personality is based off a real-life friend, relative, or maybe even a fictional character. In real-life Dissociative Identity Disorder, I believe it's called an introject. Closest I can find is Napoleon Delusion but that's too narrow.
openNo Title
The work as a whole is still available, but specific parts of it have been lost. What If? "Interplanetary Cessna" used to have Alt Text for every individual panel of the "32 celestial bodies" bit but that's gone now for some reason; history of japan had some stuff in youtube annotations like clarifying that a tornado was actually a typhoon and a few gags like the "1 new war request from USSR" bit, but then youtube deleted annotations entirely so that's gone now.
Do we have a trivia item for this in particular, or does it still fit under Keep Circulating the Tapes?
openDon't shoot the interpreter?
Basically, someone gets mad at someone else for translating/decoding/whatever a rude statement.
Hypothetical example: Alice only speaks English and Bob only speaks Norwegian, so Charlie, who speaks both languages, is translating for them both.
Bob says something in Norwegian, which Charlie translates as "You stink!" and Alice gets mad at Charlie, not at Bob.
openInadvertant confessions
A character is about to be confronted over a particular misdeed. Before the misdeed is specified, said character blurts out about an unrelated misdeed. Occasionally it's something worse, but more often (especially in comedies) it's something quite petty.
