The TVTropes Trope Finder is where you can come to ask questions like "Do we have this one?" and "What's the trope about...?" Trying to rediscover a long lost show or other medium but need a little help? Head to Media Finder and try your luck there. Want to propose a new trope? You should be over at You Know, That Thing Where.
Find a Trope:
openBetween Flanderization and a character trait that's merely amplified/exaggerated
If a character's trait is increasingly amplified/exaggerated, but it never overshadows other traits of the character, does it not count as Flanderization?
Example involving a character from Tropers: The Series:
- In "Bobby Buzzer's Bombastic Bameshow" Libre vents out an inhuman, loud scream after it's revealed that the gameshow's prize money that he got is only 1 US Dollar and 68 cents. In the episode after it ("Tropesburg Gets Even Stranger") he lets out a far more inhuman, louder scream after getting his thumb cut by Taco Jr. to use as bait for the Demodogs (which resulted in him requiring a synthetic voicebox by the end of the episode). In the episode after that ("Thrifty Thursday"), his screaming has become a full-blown ability that allows him to knock away anyone that gets caught in it.
openInternal Foreshadowing
Companion of Internal Reveal where the in-universe characters find some clues/hints that lead to them discovering something important later.
Is there anything like that?
openDo we have a trope for this?
In Teen Titans Go, The Night Begins to Shine, because of his terrible singing Beast Boy needed to find B.E.R to sing said song because failed to open a portal into The Dimension of the Night Shines. However, in reality he just botched up the lyrics. It's explicitly stated by Cyborg that the music was inside of them all along. Other characters can do this just fine also.
openYou have a [percent] chance of success! Anime
I see it the most in anime, but I know it's popped up at least once in Professional Wrestling as well. Fairly common trope in shonen series, one opponent (usually with a scientist aesthetic) is rest assured in his imminent victory over the hero because he's done the math. What factored into these equations? Who knows. But the hero only has a one percent chance of success according to them. Usually complete with some shift in the fight causing the villain to furiously recalculate and *gasp!* the hero's chance of success is rising!
openConservation of Runtime
A show that was originally had a longer runtime is split up into multiple, smaller episodes because the channel wanted it to fit in their timeslots/schedule.
Example: Episodes of House of Anubis that are on Nickelodeon are 12 minutes in length, because they thought that 42 minutes would be too long for their timeslots.
openSymbolic Jewelry
Realized that I'm missing a potential trope from Flawed. Do we have this one?
Basically, in the book Celestine's boyfriend gave her a silver anklet with a "P" charm on it, to stand for "Perfect". A few days later and she's in the branding chamber thanks to being judged "Flawed", and when branding her foot, the brander is initially shocked and uncomfortable thanks to the anklet- because it was one he himself made, and it temporarily chokes him up for a minute. The jewelry symbolized the exact opposite of what Celestine apparently was now.
openVideo game character
Is there a female video game character called Camellia who has a teleporting flower?
openRecluse out of Grief
A character shuts themselves off from people after the death of someone close to them out of grief.
openNo Title Western Animation
What's the trope when the cover for an animated movie has much more shading than the actual movie?
openIndie/Independently published literature Literature
Is there a page for indie literature? Like a literature equivalent to Indie Game and Indie Pop?
openChronic runaway
A child has a habit of running away, usually either returning or being caught after a few days. This may result in police apathy if he goes missing for real.
openExcess of Empathy
Too much empathy causes problems in the same way that Lack of Empathy does.
- Hellblazer has an arc where people start feeling each other's negative emotions, but instead of helping each other they just start killing themselves because it's too much to bear.
- One Bruce Coville story has a kid learn about the sad story of two dead lovers and get increasingly closer to death as he feels sorry for them, until he learns it's the ghosts of the dead couple (who were anything but loving in life) trying to get him to die.
openNot speaking because of shyness
While many Shrinking Violet characters don't speak much, they more belong to The Quiet One since they occasionally say a line or two, or they just speak a bit less than the more extroverted cast.
However, I noticed a few cases of characters so shy that they don't speak at all for an extended period of time, and I have a problem identifying them as The Voiceless, The Quiet One, or Elective Mute. Some examples follow.
- Sora from Manga/Sketchbook. She's quiet only because she's really shy. Since she's the show's lead character, though, we get to hear her unusual thoughts via Inner Monologue often. However:
- At the end of the Animated Adaptation, she does speak one single line.
- In the entire 17-year run of the manga, there's no confirmation as to whether or not she ever speaks at all. None of her dialogue (if it is that) is conveyed with speech bubbles.
- In her own side story, Atsuko from My Next Life As A Villainess All Routes Lead To Doom mentions having bullied for No Social Skills made her afraid of people, and she "started keeping to [herself], never speaking to anyone around [her][...] or even say hello." Of course, this changes due to a future Character Development, but the line implies she's been like that for a few years.
openCar sounds as song intro Music
As heard in Kraftwerk's "Autobahn," Sturgill Simpson's "Ronin," Tuco's "Hide Away," and probably several others: they all start with the sound of footsteps, then a car door opening and closing, the engine starting, and the car driving away. Crue's "Kick Start My Heart" doesn't really count as it's just Mick imitating the sound of a motorcycle.
openGay people love their pets
A stereotype I see that pops up is that gay people (usually gay men but sometimes lesbians) tend to get really attached to their pets. I assume this stereotype emerges from the rules that prevented gay couples from having kids. I'm wondering if there's a trope covering this and if not, if the stereotype is tropeworthy. (I can think of examples from Futurama, South Park: The Fractured but Whole, and a Sergio Aragonés cartoon in MAD.)
openJunkyard refurbishment
An old car model known for going fast but handles like a moose. A steam shovel that can't keep up with the new diesel stuff. A plane model that was sold to the Air Force but later discarded for all its flaws. Either way, these machines are So Last Season and either rusting in the scrapyard or on their way there. But all they need is one engineer or mechanic with an eye for potential, a dash of creativity, and that genius spark to turn them from rust buckets into mechanical marvels (either for their original purpose or a totally new one).
Not What a Piece of Junk as while they might've been junk once, after the mechanic's done, they don't look like it now. (Or is that still the right trope?)
openCutesy Fantasy
A fantasy show/work targeted towards girls with a girly, feminine, or sweet aesthetic. For example, My Little Pony, LoliRock, Winx Club , Ever After High , Disney Fairies , and Pretty Cure. Not necessarily a Magical Girl show too, but it is common. Opposite would be either a ‘Classic’ fantasy (Lord of the Rings) or a masculine fantasy targeted towards boys. Note: Changed the title and made some edits.
Edited by VioletDreamCupcakeopenWindow cut
The heroes are fighting/falling/trying to prevent a disaster outside, then there's a quick cut to a bystander's home/work, where the chaos is seen through the window.
Do we have this one? I've noticed a trend in a lot of fantasy literature where elves (or elf-like creatures) speak Celtic or have a fictional language heavily based on and inspired by Celtic. I'm not sure where this comes from exactly, but you see it in The Witcher and even to some extent I believe Dragon Age. So yeah, do we have it? If not, somebody really ought to make a page for it. Not me though, I'm too lazy lol.
