That happened with Unfamiliar and Points of Familiarity for The Familiar Of Zero, for instance. Final Fantasy and The Elric Saga both initially came to my attention through crappy Naruto crossovers nearly a decade ago (although the Elric Saga crossover was much less crappy than the FF crossover in question). No telling how many mecha shows I found through Super Robot Wars, either. Come for Mobile Fighter G Gundam, stay for Tekkaman Blade and Martian Successor Nadesico.
I mean, one of the main reasons I ever gave Your Diminuitive Equines: Camaraderie Is Mysticism what chance I did is because of a crossover fic with, of all things, Kamen Rider Amazon. Because hey, Showa Rider fics are a damn rare find, eh?
But yeah, I can understand and respect your stance on that. Especially since Classroom Crusaders will probably have a fair bit of continuity nods to assorted parts of JJBA (off hand I can think of three just in the chapter I posted, including a character cameo) which obviously would be missed by readers unfamiliar with it.
I don't tend to read crossovers with stuff I don't know about unless I can understand the fic anyway. And... it's actually more common than you'd think, when I'm reading decent fics anyway.
himitsu keisatsu seifu chokuzoku kokka hoanbu na no da himitsu keisatsu yami ni magireru supai katsudou torishimariIf it comforts you, Unit-kun, I enjoyed Classroom Crusaders much more than Whacky Elven Thesis, even though I knew next to nothing about JJBA when I started.
Rather than smart, I'd prefer to be wise. It would let me be silly more often.Speaking of which, that one's about to get another snippet and then a proper update, too.
Which is absurd when you think about it. Its essentially Metal Gear Rising with magic and vampires. It takes some kind of talent to actually screw up that kind of premise. Though if we're honest, fanfiction is always character driven, and since that's Holder's greatest weakness...
You're forgetting that this group includes the guy whose magnum opus is a story involving LOTS of sex, incest, and decadence, as well as the guy who is writing a story about bimboized... bimbofied... oh whatever you call it, Negima girls turning other girls into Bimbos, and is obviously working on a story to make Chisame suffer from the effects of Jokerization, including the insanity that comes with it.
Yes, OM may have had Chisame dye her hair green in one of his snippets for Thirty One Clown Princesses in Amber, but I note he has yet to have all of Class 2/3A dive into the vat of chemicals. Besides, how would that work for Sayo anyway?
Things happen. Real Life happens. The gang of misfits I used to hang out with has largely broken up because everyone needed to go their separate ways. I haven't been involved in a face-to-face RPG session in ages. Even though I went to a game/anime/writing convention Sunday, it was for the express purpose of looting the dealer's room. Evidently my new function in life is to support several new writers by buying their books.
I'm pretty sure you get a little more respect than I do. But we are both acknowledged in this thread.
...
I want to respond to that SO BADLY, but that is the trouble: It would be BADLY. Chewing the Scenery/Patrick Stewart Speech levels of BADLY. So I will be nice and not do that.

Madman with a box? I'm a madman with a semi, a pretzel bender and a Heart of Gold! When it comes down to it, UQ Holder's main flaw as a stand alone manga is that the main character is unbelievably dull.
himitsu keisatsu seifu chokuzoku kokka hoanbu na no da himitsu keisatsu yami ni magireru supai katsudou torishimariI've seen duller.
Used butter knives don't count.
And the standards here are still much higher then many other places I've scoured across the net. Now THAT's something.

Natsu Dragneel from Fairy Tail.
I would say that the problem with UQ's main character is not as much as he's dull as the fact he fails to drive the plot as a main character should. Yeah, we know he wants to reach the top of the tower and do "something important", but he hasn't actually focused on it until recently and he himself admits he doesn't know what he wants to do when he gets there. He's way too carefree, so he decides to not pay attention to things he doesn't consider important at the moment, such as him turning into a monster. Actually, him simply forgetting about that was when I started to genuinely dislike him, until then I just didn't care about him.

Touta: pinball protagonist. And considering the flipper that pushes him around, Yukihime Notvangeline doesn't want to see him for an in-universe year...
Mind you, Kamijou Touma is still duller. I actually prefer the batshit-crazy school principal in Assassination Classroom to Touma.
And I HATE that principal!
I didn't say he was the dullest protagonist ever. I just said he is unbelievably dull.
And this is coming from a guy who's watched Garzey's Wing.
himitsu keisatsu seifu chokuzoku kokka hoanbu na no da himitsu keisatsu yami ni magireru supai katsudou torishimariIsn't that where the Codex Alera series came from?
I'm wondering what he's going to do for Aeronaut's Windlass.
Eyup. Hence the law being named after Jim Butcher.
Corollary: No idea is so good it can't be executed badly.
but I note he has yet to have all of Class 2/3A dive into the vat of chemicals.
Because that'd be... very, very hard to pull off. It's basically what the DCNU post Flashpoint has done with Harley, and it's part of what has completely ruined the character to levels that make Gagahime look excellent.
Now, Forced Jokerization is something different, for it offers a dramatic conflict, but willing 'me too' actions take in that direction dilute the uniqueness of both Joker and his henchpersons. Who, although they tend to be taken off rather quickly, actually include quite a few cool and varied cats even across the canons. Other than Harley, there's Bob from the 1989 movie, and those creepy little flying guys from Dark Knight Returns, and Gaggy, oh God, Gaggy...
... then again, Topless Nazi Shemale takes a lot of those cool points away.

I am afraid to ask.
Also from Dark Knight Returns.
She had Swastika pasties.
himitsu keisatsu seifu chokuzoku kokka hoanbu na no da himitsu keisatsu yami ni magireru supai katsudou torishimariAs for the dullest manganime male lead ever, I'd have to say it's either the one from Candidate for Goddess/Pilot Candidate or the waste of space from Kanokon. Of course, it seems like the Gary Stu from Mahouka would beat them easily at that, but I've only read like one chapter of the manga. But those reviews, man...

Since you were commenting about UQ fanfic, I wanted to say that yeah, I think that the reason there isn't much of it is that the series offers pretty much nothing interesting to work with in a fanfic besides Kuro's issue. I did like the one with female Kuro and Touta, but the Touta in that fic is a totally different person and I honestly can't imagine Kuro's issue being resolved that well or those two as such a cute couple in the series proper. From the little I read of it with the help of a translator, Karin's French fanfic was also cool, but it also reminds me of how much wasted potential her character is.
