Problem?
#1: Sep 18th 2010 at 8:17:02 PM

Hello, and welcome to my first LP/Liveblog of Ancient Domains Of Mystery, a famous Roguelike! I, Att Obl 227, will be playing this game in a (rather vain) attempt in order to beat the forces of Chaos! I did play some games of it before the making of this Liveblog, and this is probably my fourth character I've created. A Human Female Paladin that goes in the name of Mellia (Cookies for reference), as she goes on a quest to take down the Forces of Chaos Once and for all! If Mellia dies, then I'll start over with a new character until I beated this game! So without further introductions, let's go!

(OOC: I will link out some music while you read this Liveblog, since ADOM has no music. However, in the event that linking some music ruins the mood of the game or my Liveblog, I'll stop.)

Cue this Music...

Day 1 (Unicorn, Darknight, New Moon), of Mellia the Paladin's Adventure:

As I walked down the road, the weather today is pretty good. I was supposed to save the world from Chaos, and as a Paladin, I will do so.

Do you want to know more about me? Why sure, I can tell you right now, but since this is my personal diary, I will consider it sacred. Please don't taint this diary, thank you! I will write more about me as the days go on, since my time for Adventure is going up now!

My height is about 5'6" tall, and I'm 25 as of right now. My eyes are green, my hair color is black, and I have a pale complexion... My Sign is a Unicorn, and it must be my lucky Star Sign! I'm striving to become one of the lawful Paladins, a paragon if you should say. I heard a mystical saying that I will not be easily corrupted by those Chaos Magic and Witchcraft, which is a great thing! I won't let Chaos Reign over me no matter what! Oh, and I forgot! My appearence is kinda striking, but I think it'll won't do much when I have to fight the forces of Chaos!

And so, my Journey to rid the world of Chaos begins...

I entered a town named Terinyo, and immediately, I felt at ease there, like I've entered some sort of Sanctuary. I wandered around this place, with such nice people there. Along wandering this new town, I've managed to meet this kind Village Elder named Rynt, who gives me a favor: There is a Dungeon Southeast of Terinyo, and inside there, lies the Carpenter who works on this village. Find him, and escort him to this town. I accepted his task, but while I have hopes of being a good girl, I have some problems. Is the Carpenter an idiot who stumbles around? Am I fighting heavily armed monsters? It's up to me to find out when I head to the dungeon...

After talking to Rynt, I stumbled upon a shop, with some guy named Munxip... What a weird name, I suppose, but hey, I can't be cruel to anyone but the forces of Chaos, right? I simply payed for the large ration, which costs pretty cheap actually. Hope they don't run out of supplies or something, since it's probably the town's food supply. As I leave the shop, and later, the town, Munxip says some words of encouragement, which is pretty great, I guess...

BGM Change time!

Day 2 (Unicorn, Oneweek, Moon in Waxing):

And so, my journey begins in this Dungeon that Rynt told me to visit. It's sort of like that Chaos has tainted this place... But no matter, I will do my duties IN THE NAME OF JUSTICE! I've descended the stairs, and lo, I've met a Goblin! It's too bad that he couldn't fight me very well, since I ended up slaying him! Teehee~! I quickly look at the stairs that go downward, but I have to explore this dungeon! And then I triggered some trap, which pours out some Pit Vipers, and that is not my day! Good thing luck is on my side today, as these Vipers prooved no match for me! For some reason, I leveled up, and I chose to focus on concentration and... Listening? I don't know what I've chosen, really! I looked down at the pit which I managed to fall on, but now I wish that this pit would explode! And then It Got Worse: I opened a Monster Closet of some sort! Realizing that I don't have any explosive spells, and only a freaking sword, I ran downstairs, but that Giant Centipede followed me around! Is god on my side here? I'm asking this because I took down that monster with ease~! Along the way, I've met some Black hurthling, which asks me that if I have seen the so called "One Ring"... Well, Mr. Hurthling, how about I kill you so that you may find that "One Ring" for yourself in another land!

Anyways, I'm getting more experienced, and I chose to learn some Two Weapon Combat, and I have to be Healthy in order to stay safe! Since I can't find those stairs that lead down I have to go Up. But then something happened: That isn't the same floor I've been to! Maybe the powers of Chaos twisted it to their own amusement to make my life a living hell? Another experience gain, more focus on combat and healing. Since I decided to head back up, I need to explore the rest of the dungeon, and at one point, triggered a trap that involves some Light shining! It's too bad though, because some fool who designed this dungeon won't realize that if I lure these monsters to that trap, I would've ended up killing them!

Next Time: More Combat on the Dungeons, and will Mellia die? We'll soon find out next time!

I'm a save-scummer because it's the only realistic way of finding out how the game works and where it goes.

Currently, I'm headed towards the Eternal Guardian and Casino having just beaten the Ancient Chaos Wyrm in the Tower of Eternal Flames with my female gray elven wizard Mio.

Trust me, it'll take you forever to finish this game if you don't save-scum.

Now, for some early game tips:

  • For the village dungeon quest, always talk to Rynt instead of Guth'Alak. The Yrrigs quest is much much better than the Keethrax quest (they're mutually exclusive) because the Yrrigs quest nets you a Manual of Bridge Building, which is required to learn the Bridge Building skill to be able to defeat the Skeleton King in the Tomb of the High Kings to get the Ring of the High Kings so that passage will be granted by the Eternal Guardian. Alternatively, making an ice bridge works, but remember that 2000s weight limit, lest you start getting 200+damage per turn from chaos piranhas. The Keethrax quest's only benefit is bringing his corpse back to Guth'Alak in exchange for a Potion of Cure Corruption. Also, he's a lv 12 Black Druid. Obviously, the Yrrigs quest is better, plus PCs without healing can learn it from Jharod if you're merciful enough.
  • If you're a Lawful PC, shift to Neutral for most of the game, then shift back using altars much much later. Being Neutral has its benefits, like the possibility of getting 4 Blessed Scrolls of Chaos Resistance from the Dwarven Mystic in Dwarftown. Also, Yergius in Lawonilothehl won't teach Pick Pockets to any Lawfuls
  • Do the Puppy Cave quest; it is imperative that you do this. Eat any ant corpses you may find on level 2 for the acid resistance. Unfortunately, this quest must be done within the first 3 days for the cute dog to be generated as alive instead of a corpse.
  • Obtain the Waterproof Blanket from the Small Cave. Do not exceed level 6 in that cave.

Ideally, your early game should go like this:

Small Cave —-> Puppy Cave —-> Village Dungeon

After doing the village dungeon quest, return to Terinyo to get food, then head for the Caverns of Chaos in the middle of the map.

Ahh, ADOM.

It's not imperative that one save states, but like any Rougelike, unless you're REALLY good at the game, you're going to die. A lot.

Me? I've wanted to make a Trollish Healer character born in the month of the... Cup, I think it was? The one that gives faster healing. Just sounds like it'd be fun.

Don't take life too seriously. It's only a temporary situation.

Thanks for the advice, Mapi. I'll keep these advices in my mind!

And now...

Day 2 Continued...

Oh dear, A Pack of Wolves are looking for me! The only good news is that I evaded them, since I consider Wolves neutral. Back at Terinyo, I talked to the little Girl and Tywat Pare, and they ask me for favors: Find the Puppy, and assassinate the Raider known as Kranach. And so, I head out to the Caves in the Northeast, in which my adventure will continue...

And then Mellia died. Damn. Looks like it's time for another adventurer to rise up to the challenge!

This time, an Orc Assassin, named Lokktar will dare face Chaos!

... And then he died. Damn. Again. He was at the Puppy Caves, fighting bravely against the Ants, who overwhelm him.

Cue a quick game with a Gnome Wizard, meeting the same fate as the Assassin before him.

Things are getting desperate... Maria the Human Paladin is up...

(OOC: I might Save Scum. Might.)

Desperate Times are looming...

After fighting a few monsters in the Small Cave, Maria heads out to the Puppy Cave to rescue that puppy! Maria's antics include:

  • Finding some Ants - and running away from them, since they're dangerous.
  • A fight against a group of Rats...
  • And a That One Level in the form of Dungeon Level 5. Lots of strong monsters, and then she died. Damn.

Ah well, I might as well save scum since I'm new to the game, after all. Trigger Loaded, you're right. I'm not that good in Roguelikes, and I'm going to die a lot, so I might as well Save Scum until I'm actually good at that game. I will continue Maria's Adventure, but thanks to the act of Save Scumming, I'll probably get Internet Backdraft, and I should start a new game. I might say that the Maria Playthrough won't count thanks to Save Scumming.

Maria (Save Scum: 3)

At Level 2 at the Puppy Cave, Maria has to swim for her life, trying to reach for the dog. Later on, Maria has a fight for her life, as a Gauntlet of monsters appear over her, and one of them poisoned her. Luck is on her side, however, and Maria has reached the Cute Dog! And that dog died. Damn. And Again.

At this point, I might as well do another Maria because the previous Maria died. A lot, and no matter what I do, the puppy died, so another Maria (Same Build) has entered the fray... And I better time my savescums right this time...

Last Defense Line.

Okay, suggestions for the Puppy Cave:

  • Take out the ants immediately until you get a corpse. Eat the corpse for acid resistance.
  • Find a huge rock weighing 1000s and drop it on the anthill. Immediately go down further into the Puppy Cave.
  • When you find the cute dog, make it follow you, but make it wait when there are hostile monsters around, especially in the cavern level prior to where you find the cute dog.

Also, as a general rule, DO NOT KILL ANY CATS.

Ah,ADOM! As a long-time former addict and the page's creator,I think you're doing okay for only your 5th or so go,but there's more than one way to do the Puppy Cave.

If you're set on rescuing the puppy, set Tactics to Coward until you have to fight. Do not stop on the ant floor or lvl. 5 any longer than the time it takes to find the down staircase. Go directly down - do not linger and do not engage the ants or the enemies. You can come back when you've levelled up and clear the place out later. Find the down staircase on lvl. 5, go down and immediately go back up again. This generates a living cute dog on lvl. 6 which won't die as you're trudging around the forest in the overworld. You'll still have to escort it out, but at least you can come back once you're a bit tougher.

What Ack Sed said. Also, if you're unlucky enough that a river was generated on the fourth or fifth floor of the Puppy Cave, you're better off just giving up on the quest.

ANYWAY! So, please don't lynch me for save-scumming due to dying, but here are my current ADOM PCs.

  • Mio, a lv 25 female gray elven wizard.
    • Stats:
      • St - 44 (I got the apish corruption and removed it after it kicked in thrice, hence the epic St.
      • Le - 36
      • Wi - 48
      • Dx - 38
      • To - 41 (again, from the apish corruption)
      • Ch - 19
      • Ma - 49
      • Pe - 31
    • Alignment - N=
    • Significant skills - Find Weakness (cost me a Wish), Backstabbing at 98, Climbing at 100 (see next).
    • Significant equipment - Has visited the Sinister Library of Nilthias, hence I own every spell except Wish because I didn't even bother trying to learn the damn spell. Eternium plate mail, blessed phase dagger (-3, 1d3+4), blessed seven league boots [+2, +0], Ring of the Master Cat, Ring of Immunity, ankh, bracers of speed, cloak of protection [+2, +4], helms of water breathing, elemental gauntlets.
    • Significant intrinsics - I know this since I have the Revelation spell under my belt. Resistant to all 4 elements, immune to them due to the Ring of Immunity, Lucky, Fate smiles, sleep resistant, petrification resistant, death ray resistant, see invisible, teleport control, AND I HAVE 158 SPEED UNENCUMBERED.
    • Crowning Moment Of Awesome - I cleared an ancient black dragon vault guarded by a named great black wyrm. Also, I'm a crowned Champion of my alignment. Given my epic speed, I melee Greater Molochs.
  • Azusa, a lv 21 female hurthling Assassin.

    • Significant equipment - ankh, black dragon scale mail, cloak of protection [+0, +3], 2 blessed phase daggers (1d4), 2 rings of elemental mastery, blessed seven league boots [+1, +2], elemental gauntlets.
    • Significant Intrinsics - I don't have revelation, but I do know that I have teleport control, and intrinsic fire, cold and shock resistance. The Ring of Elemental Mastery makes me immune to those 3 elements, and the black dragon scale mail makes me immune to acid.
      • Note: Since I'm immune to fire, I tend to use offensive Alchemy when surrounded (mix any two random herbs to create a fireball I'm immune to).
    • Crowning Moment Of Awesome - I was able to kill Kherab, the Dwarven Artificer in Darkforge in two hits.

      • Ma - 26
      • Pe - 19
    • Alignment - N-
    • Significant skills - Find Weakness and Backstabbing at 60, Necromancy at 100 (duh).
    • Significant equipment - ankh, ancient mummy wrapping, blessed sword of sharpness (-2, 4d8+1), elemental gauntlets, Sword of Nonnak, Lead-filled mace "Big Punch", 2 blessed rings of damage (yeah, Yui-nyan's awesome at melee. Not as awesome as Mio-chan though).
    • Significant intrinsics - Fire resistance, see invisible, sleep resistance, stun resistance, confusion resistance, poison resistance.
    • Crowning Moment Of Awesome - Scorched Rehetep to ashes in one turn, killed Nonnak in 3 turns.

Obviously, I'm building Houkago Tea Time up. Now, I think Mugi should be a bard... DEFINITELY a Paladin.

New!Maria: Savescum: A few times.

BGM Change time! (Disclaimer: This song is actually from Kamui, not RefleX.)

It's too bad that I haven't locked down these ants! They probably deserved it, but hey, I took a Third Option: Close the doors, thus locking them down forever! After fighting some monsters, I ended up back into the light. I let the Puppy go, and I talked to that little Girl, calling me a Hero... I must be proud of that! The Village Elder asked me for a simple task: Help the Carpenter up in the Dungeon Southeast of Terinyo. I went there, but then I went to a Pit Viper Trap, and one of them poisoned me! However, since nothing can stop me, I win by default!

And then she fell into a pit and died. Damn. Save scum time!

I went inside the dungeon Southeast of Terinyo, and my first kill in this dungeon was a female Orc, which is a good kill because I got some more experience, and I spent them on dodging and first Aid, because I need to learn to evade attacks! Okay, now I'm in a trap consisting of... Goblins and Rats. Take a wild guess how it went. I don't have anything else to write, since I'm always going down, killing monsters and trying to Chat with them, and Ooooh... A Level Up! There's some booming voice telling me that every "1000 turns", all diseases can be healed~! I wonder what is that whole "1000 turns" thing anyways...

Anyways, I came across yet another Zerg Rush, this time, consisting of those theives! Even though they stole my money, I killed all of them, along with some black Hurthlings.

And now, we left Maria Hanging in favor of a new character (No Savescumming here), a Dwarf Wizard that is named Durwell.

Day 1:

At last! My old days of training is over! There is a distant village that I shall go to, and then I can read my books in peace! Boy, these monsters are quite dangerous around here ever since Chaos seems to take over this place! Oh, this place? My bad! It was called Terinyo! A Dwarf must train somewhere, right? I ended up wandering this mysterious cave full of wonders, but maybe I should not stay too long, right? WRONG! I made a simple mistake of using close combat against the Kolbold and other monsters, but it went okay thanks to my Acid Bolt Spell, a useful spell that takes up most of my magical energy... Luckily, I have come across a Quarterstaff, which can be quite useful... And then I realize that I have a dagger in hand, in which I should have equiped when I came across my first battle! From now on, I will use my Quarterstaff forever! I need to think of a name first for my staff... Capehorn seems to be a nice name... Wait... AM I DRIFTING OFF!? No matter, I nearly suffered in this place, but I barely escaped.

Day 2:

So I went back to Terinyo, and I spoke to the Little Girl who says that there are bad things in the cave. What bad things!? Monsters!? Traps!? Anyway, I went on to investigate that cave, and I killed some monsters here and there, but... I have to finish my quest.

And then he died, by entering a room full of rats that killed him. Damn.

So basically, I'm going to Focus on the Maria Playthrough as I get through the game with Save Scumming. Until next time!

Last Defense Line.

Protip: Don't try locking ants in rooms; they can dig.

Addendum to my previous post. Here's what the monster memory says about my PCs:

  • Azusa - An extremely experienced hurthling Assassin. She is extremely strong, learned, unbending, cat-like in her movements, rugged, well-liked, good-looking, and a mana focus. She seems to anticipate incoming attacks. She is protected by near indestructible armor.
  • Mio - An extremely experienced gray elven wizard. She is incredibly strong, a genius, absolutely unyielding, tough like a mountain, beloved, beautiful, and an enormous mana channeler. She surely has displacer-beast blood in her veins. She is incredibly protected.
  • Ritsu - A highly experienced drakish mindcrafter. She is very strong, learned, unbending, agile, tough, well-liked, and moderately connected to the flow of mana. She sidesteps many attacks. She is wearing extremely heavy armor.
  • Yui - A highly experienced gray elven necromancer. She is very strong, learned, headstrong, agile, tough, hated by most people, ugly (mummy wrapping has Ap - 8 as a penalty), and a great channeler of mana. She seems to anticipate incoming attacks. She is wearing extremely heavy armor.

IMHO,not save-scumming really ups the drama. It may be masochistic, but the relief when you do escape from an impossible situation by means of Try Everything or a lucky miss/hit is amazing.

If you ever play a mindcrafter, ask me - I play almost nothing else. And I try to do Lawenilothehl,Terinyo,Puppy Cave and the bandit quest. I die a lot. :-)

I'm at a point where I'm still exploring the game, so forgive me. Also, being a mindcrafter is horrible (had a non-scummed one once that fell to a tension room of Ghost Lords).

Also, I currently was able to roll Tsumugi up. Lv 10 Dark Elven Paladin, luckily was able to get TWO wishes (one from a Ring of Djinni Summoning I found in Druid Dungeon lv 6, another from a pool), and pickpocketed an Amulet of Life Saving in the Infinite Dungeon.

RNG loved me this game; haven't had to save scum at all as of yet (due to the fact that I started out with elven chain mail [+0, +8]).

Oh Ack Sed, I made a mistake. Forgot to note that the elven chain mail I started with is [+0, +8].

Consider this: I started basically with 10 PV at lv 1, as a Dark Elf.

Both wishes were spent on pairs of 7-league boots and black dragon scale mail, btw.

Sweet, not that it matters now because my bard is dead. And her little dog too!

Gah, I need to practice this game more. Among my other faliures were a human wizard who died because of pit viper poison because I tried to MELEE THE DAMN THING. Then there was the elementalist who stumbled upon a nest of about 10 claw beetles...

Oh, and my Dwarf Paladin. He was doing fine, just found a robe that granted him +5 PV, and he had about 16/9 as far as defence went and was at about level 5. Then he died of starvation because he didn't have food preservation, I didn't buy rations before entering the dungeon, and none of the enemies would kindly drop their corpses. Oy.

Alright, I think I'll try my hand at this. I hope you don't mind, but I feel it would be rather stupid to create another liveblog about the same game...

As you wake up in the afterlife, you feel very confused. How did you die? You cannot seem to recall. As you look around, you see a small group of people gathered around a human woman with a lute and a silver wolf by her side. You approach her and start to listen in...

"...so after his harrowing battle, he was right on the brink of death! Excited, he bravely marched into the next room! Or at least he would have, had the door not been booby trapped with explosives! And that ends the tale of our poor dwarven paladin...the very same person who is standing right behind you all!"

Though not entirely sure, you may have figured out how you just died.

"Good afternoon to you! My name is Dana the Bard, and I have a knack for telling stories about the recently deceased! Would you care to sit down? I've got a good story to tell!"

You realize you don't have much else to do with your afterlife, and decide to listen for just a moment.

"So our tale begins where many others have begun: the small villiage of Terinyo in the Drakalor Chain. There was a young gray elf priest by the name of Jerry. He, like many other 'heroes', had made it his quest to rid the world of Chaos by striking at the source."

"Many doubted Jerry. But Jerry was different from all the others! He was Alert! Though many others were fast, Jerry himself was Very Quick! His willpower was strong and his attunement to Mana was unmatched! Surely Jerry would be the elf to save the world!"

"Rynt the village elder thought he should start small. There is a cave nearby Terinyo, and the carpenter Yriggs had fled there. Rynt suggested that saving the local carpenter would be a small task for such a big hero, and Jerry himself agreed. Jerry grabbed a few rations from the village shop, and sent out to save Yriggs."

"Upon entering the cave, Jerry noticed something was amiss. Namely, the entire dungeon was full of books! Always a sucker for a good read, Jerry pulled off a few books and started to learn some spells. Before long he could pacify monsters and disarm traps. He learned to see with mana where his eyes could not, and create darkness where there was light. He even managed to heal his own wounds and stun his foes! Jerry felt quite invincible at this point!"

"This did not make the dungeon a cakewalk for Jerry. His enemies were strong, and the dark library was full of many questionable objects. Though he could tell if most objects were cursed or blessed, he missed one leather cap, and it fused to his scalp. Despite this setback, he fought his way through the dungeon. Along the way he managed to get quite proficient with his flail and his bow, though the flail was quickly destroyed by the trap."

"Upon entering one of the rooms, Jerry found a healer by the name of Jharod! Though surrounded by monsters, Jharod was completely unharmed. Jerry wasted no time in slaying them all except for one Wild Cat. Jerry was fond of the creatures and would rather just pacify him with one of his many spells. After the cat purred and walked off, Jharod spoke to Jerry. It turns out that while reading these books to better his craft, Jharod ran into Yriggs, who had gone mad. Jharod would love to heal this fellow, and offered to teach Jerry his craft if he brought him Yriggs. Jerry agreed and went off to search for Yriggs."

"Upon reaching the 7th floor, Jerry had found Yriggs, completely out of his mind. Jerry sucker punched the poor man to provoke him, and started to dash back towards Jharod, carpenter in tow."

"Jerry had made it back up to the 6th floor when he tripped over a slab of pure black obsidian. Confused, he stopped to examine it for a second. As he climbed on top, he was seared by scorching flames! Unable to move, he was quickly embraced by death. You heard that right, dear friends. Jerry, the gray elven priest, was sacrificed by Yriggs, the mad carpenter to his gods."

You sit in awe for a moment, then start to clap along with everyone else. You certainly thought your death was stupid, but this guy stole the cake from right under you nose. Though you're laughing, the gray elven priest that just arrived on the scene is not as amused.

"Alright friends, care for another story? This one is fantastic! You see, there was an orcish farmer..."

Go for it. Plus,it's an interesting story style.

Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.

Truth be told, I'm not sure if I will do another one. tongue I mainly did that because I found the cause of death to be hilarious. But I guess we'll see.
