I like R.E.M., but I've always found "Everybody Hurts" kind of cheesy. I can also see why even they don't like "Shiny Happy People."

[up]I'm one of "Shiny Happy People"'s defenders, actually, since I liked at least what they were attempting with it (I always love me some good subtle satire), even if it didn't come off so well, and aside from that, it's at least a really catchy and nice-sounding song.

Also, you might like this article.

Any Colour You Like by Pink Floyd from their Dark Side Of The Moon album. It's not that I despise the song enough that I'd rather skip it, since every song flows well into the next on the album, it just doesn't seem to have an actual place on the album in my opinion. It has the weakest concept theme (apparently "choice") and the song does not reflect on it. It doesn't help that it's entirely an instrumental piece with absolutely no lyrics, spoken parts, or sound effects; mostly placed there to serve as a bridge between two different songs. The song itself has a wonderful sound, but I honestly thought they could do better with the theme compared to the rest of the songs.

I've checked on previous entries for songs from the same album that others dislike: The "whiny voice" in The Great Gig in the Sky revolves around its theme ("death") and I don't find Money to be anti-consumerist so much as it is anti-greed.

I don't really have anything against "Love you till the end" exactly, but I find it one of The Pogues' weakest songs.

[up][up] I kinda like "Any Colour You Like" *

. If nothing else it's got a cool keyboard tone going for it, and taken on it's own it might not be much, but I think it works in context on the album. Actually, due to the Siamese Twin Songs-ish effect, the first time I listened to Dark Side Of The Moon without having looked at the track-list, I hadn't realized a new song had started and just thought "Us And Them" had a long, jammy ending.

"I Remember You" has sort of grown on me. Guilty pleasure I suppose. As a general rule though, Skid Row had an excellent bite to their music that was their greatest asset imo, even that first album was more hard rock/traditonal heavy metal than pop metal.

Going for some obvious ones, but Black Sabbath is one of my favorite bands, and Vol. 4 is actually my favorite album of theirs, but "FX" and "Changes" are inexcusable.

I thought I mentioned this before, but rereading this thread I see that isn't the case. So...

Starflyer 59. My favorite band. I have physical copies of nearly everything Jason Martin has recorded, and digital copies of the rest. But it's not all good.

What I'd consider their worst track is "We Got a Word For." Judging by the date, it's possibly Sf59's first foray into synthpop—because it sure as heck sounds like their first try at the genre. The synthesizer sounds generic, the melody is simplistic, and the vocal delivery... Well, Jason Martin has a limited range at the best of times (usually he makes it work by penning music to complement the range he can sing), but his delivery on this track is so monotone, his singing on every other track sounds like a pop diva in comparison.

But that's the low-hanging fruit of Sf59's discography. Few fans defend "We Got a Word For" because few fans even know it exists. It was only released on an obscure compilation—and I suppose the fact that Jason didn't include the track on any albums (or even on his b-sides and rarities collection Easy Come Easy Go) indicates he didn't think that highly of it, either. Or, worse, that he forgot the song even existed.

No, I need to criticize something more Come at me bro—something other Sf59 fans actually like. I need to tell you what's wrong with "Le Vainqueur". It's an ugly golem constructed from mismatched parts of better Starflyer tunes. It's got the this is what my nervous breakdown sounds like production of the entire album Gold, it's got the ending feedback shrieks of "A Housewife Love Song", and it's got the huge riffs of half the songs from Silver—but it has none of the melodies that made those albums/songs work. The quiet parts sound meandering and tuneless next to "One Shot Juanita", and the loud parts are just a sound and fury next to the riffs from "Duel Overhead Cam".

I'd probably be somewhat impressed with "Le Vainqueur" if it had been written and recorded by anyone else. But for Starflyer 59, it's a disappointment because they can do so much better.

I didn't write any of that.

I've always found Tim McGraw to be a pretty decent country artist, but I think "Truck Yeah" is completely horrible. I'll even go as far as to call it the worst country song I've ever heard.

Oh, I like HOFFMAESTRO, but there's a little song called So You Do (Slimi Jimi Bubbly Boy) that I just can't stand. It is very straight Adult Alternative, but that's not the problem. The issue lies within the chorus, which is by far the most prominent part of the song because it appears every twenty seconds or so. It kind of gets, what's that word? Oh, repetitive. It's also not very interesting lyrically, because it's just a variation on the Roses Are Red, Violets Are Blue... thing. Tired formula, bland result.

[up]#291: My point is that all fratboy songs are pretty much alike, so whether they're about trucks, girls, or a truck in a field, and a girl in a red sundress with an ice cold beer to her lips, begging for another kiss, the general tropes are the same.

[up]#293: "It's hard to bargle nawdle zouss??? / With all these marbles in my mouth" is what I think of whenever I hear incomprehensible lyrics.

A few more:

  • "1994" by Jason Aldean. I'm usually forgiving of his rockin' country, but "1994" was just a bunch of country-boy clichés with Shout Outs to Joe Diffie (who, to be fair, is a pretty damn decent artist worth shouting out) grafted in without rhyme or reason.

  • Luke Bryan I will usually give a pass since he has a great voice and a better knack for melody than the average fratboy country singer. But dear God, "That's My Kind of Night" is painful. You should never have Conway Twitty and T-Pain name-drops in the same song, nor sing about diamond-plated tailgates. Nor should you be lusting after hot young girls drinking beer when you're THIRTY-SEVEN YEARS OLD. Grow up already. (I guess there was a huge backlash for that song, because it dropped damn fast and the label replaced it with "Drink a Beer", which is one of the best things he's ever put out.)

  • "Love Your Love the Most" by Eric Church. I really like Church for his hard rock influences as well, and the sensitivity he brings on many of his songs such as "Springsteen". But "Love Your Love the Most" is just a lazily-written List Song about totally unrelated things that he likes from Faulkner to George Strait to mustard on his fries (?!?). It's not catchy, it's not interesting, and it's not memorable. At least Jay Joyce gives it his typically sturdy production. And much to his credit, his lyrics have gotten better ever since, so I doubt he'll misfire on me again.

  • Lady Antebellum can be quite good, but in retrospect, "Just a Kiss", "Dancin' Away with My Heart", and "Wanted You More" are kinda sleepy and dull. (From what I've heard, that album suffered from a serious dullness, although I will admit "We Owned the Night" livened things up some.) "Goodbye Town" off Golden had a similar sound, but I'm a sucker for a nostalgia song of that sort. It's nice to hear great songs like "Downtown" and "Compass" giving them a newfound sense of energy.

  • Tim McGraw:
    • Almost any duet he did with Faith Hill was just a total Cliché Storm of bad pop love song tropes. The only ones that I liked from them were "Like We Never Loved at All" (although that one had to grow on me), which was at least more of a breakup song, and "I Need You", which had a ton of interesting lyrics.
    • "Please Remember Me" and "My Best Friend". Boring, unremarkable.
    • "Suspicions". My favorite Eddie Rabbitt song with a cool slow-burn feel that's almost completely gone on Tim's version because he jacked the tempo up too much.
    • "Let It Go". Painfully boring "motivational" cliché song that feels more like Martina McBride bleeding-heart territory.
    • "Nothin' to Die For". Painfully boring PSA song.
    • Oh yeah, and "Lookin' for That Girl". And you thought 37-year-old Luke Bryan was way too old to be chasing after hot girls in cutoffs… how about having the 46-year-old do the same?!

  • Also adding to the Blake Shelton list, "Sure Be Cool If You Did" wasn't all that great either. Just very bland and forgettable. And considering that Blake has such a distinct personality outside the studio, it's amazing how anonymous he can be inside it.

And you'd think that since I don't like Auto-Tuned dance songs about drinking, partying, and dancing, that I would hate Jerrod Niemann's "Drink to That All Night"… and you'd be wrong. That one at least has personality and energy under the Auto-Tune, and it still sounds like actual instruments were used on it. And that "Take your cup, fill it up / You can't raise it high enough" is a serious Ear Worm.

I don't really hate the entire song (in fact I really like parts of it), but I think that Rammstein's "Klavier" is the only time when their production team let them down, making it their absolute weakest song. To put it mildly, that tremolo-ized guitar tone is atrocious, especially in this musical context. Which is a shame, because, again, I really enjoy the parts of this song that aren't filled with this awful, awful sound.
