I just started watching this series. It's a pretty standard Hot-Blooded mech series, and it's definitely a good place to go to after finishing Gurren Lagann.

Anyone else care to share their thoughts?

Actually, felt mildly disappointed after how much it was hyped. I sat through Gurren Lagann with pleasure, but somehow my willing suspension of disbelief didn't kick in for this one. A decent show, though the plot writing wasn't always up to par.

There's two things. Its much more Monster of the Week than Gurren Lagann, and also its aimed at 10yrs olds, which might explain your disappointment.

I love Gao Gai Gar, but I still think it could've way better if they tightened and shortened up the storyline.

Gao Gai Gar is a show you have to watch for the plot. It's more about what happens in between the episodic fights of the week that makes it intriging. It has more substance to it that TTGL or Shin Mazinger or other shows like that. but the plot/science-fiction has to be your number one reason for watch it, not for typical "lol epic" Super Robot stuff. (I think that entire mindset is poisonous, anyway.) Unlike other Super Robot shows, it requires you to be thinking about what's going on and about how everything ties together.

[up]Sure, I'm just saying it's more enjoyable if you notice the little things and really pay attention to the writing.

the plot and character development is what makes it realy really good and makes it a cut above how Super Robot is done now-a-days.

[up] Nostalgia Filter is pretty high

..Sorry, But some people don't think so. I know its hard to accept.

I find Gao Gai Gar fine as well, but most Super Robot Genre enthusiasts really don't care about good writing, they care about the battles and awesome moments. Sure, good writing helps, but your acting very snooty with this opnion.

[up]It shouldn't just come to the visuals and being over the top, though, mecha is still science fiction, and I'm of the opinion that "trashy" science-fiction like absurist campy stuff like Flash Gordon style stuff (most post-Brave Super Robot falls into this camp, and arguably pre-Brave too, the stuff from the 80s and 70s was just as silly.) I just like having something more to it than catch phrases, Calling Your Attacks , Hot-Blooded characters (being Hot-Blooded can make a character one dimensional if they act that way all the time.) and an obsession with just the over the top action. It leads to a really skewed perspective for sci-fi. It becomes no better than a Micheal Bay Transformers film at that point.

And? Not everyone likes that. Thats just utilizing Opnion Myopia, at that point.

The Reason Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann became so popular was because it took a look at all eras of Super Robots and parodied them, then went in it's own direction by the end of the series. Also, Studio Gainax made it, so it would be extremely popular by default most of the time.

Trying to disprove it hasn't made it's mark doesn't help your own argument by saying Gao Gai Gar made it's mark, when other people can logically disprove that idea as well.

[up]Yeah, but TTGL wasn't the only guilty one. a lot of Go Nagai and Ken Ishikawa's work was just as guilty of this. (Mazinger Z, Getter Robo) things started to look up in the 90s when Sunrise showed us with Brave what happens when you treat the genre as a more legitamate piece of science-fiction rather than as absurdism. and for some reason, after 2003, Super R Obot drifted back to that 1970s camp. starting with all of those new Mazinger and Getter shows.

After Gao Gai Gar FINAL, most Super Robot shows to follow have felt like a regression in terms of story and characters.

Except they basically Trope Codified the Super Robot Genre as it is today. And a lot of people prefer the 70's camp over the top calling your attacks. Gao Gai Gar reveled in it, while trying to make the robot itself realistic. It was popular, but only in a cult following way that never generated the sales that Sunrise thought it would.

Also, the simple fact that most japanese prefer the campy over the top style shows that.

Now, please, let's drop that, the arguements just keep going in circles, and never go anywhere.

[up]Well, for one thing, I don't really believe in the Super Robot Genre and Real Robot Genre segregation. To me it's all science-fiction and should be looked at and thought about as such.

That's a rather odd view to take. Sort of like lumping Star Wars and Two Thousand One into the same genre.

Okay, I like GGG, but I don't see how it somehow has more substance to it than TTGL... But I'm not gonna argue on that point, 'cause I'm pretty sure that'll go nowhere.

So instead: GOLDION HAAAAAMMEEEER!

I've watched 17 episodes and I'm still not overly impressed. Getter Robo was also formulaic and used a lot of stock footage but at least the transformation scenes are much shorter and the characters have more personality. Maybe it becomes good at some point.

I remember Gao Gai Gar being REALLY formulaic until the last episode. Also, I'm thinking that people are REALLY misremembering the TV series with FINAL.
