Lugia seems to be quite adept at modern gamer slang despite being an ancient sea deity...

For some reason I picture her playing Halo with a gigantic controller in a room behind that waterfall.

Sorry, I can't hear you from my FLYING METAL BOX!

We have returned! Today, another sneak preview of a wifi Event! Also, the Bruno fight was a total cakewalk, so it shall be quick and brutal in Yuyuko's favour.

(Undisclosed time in the future, PEWTER CITY - Pewter Mueseum)

Mari: Hello again, Steven.

Steven: Ah, nice to see you here, Mari! Meet our resident Fossil Guy, who hails from what's left of Cinnabar.

Fossil Guy: I'm going to miss the old Mansion, the ghost on old Blaine's Gym's rooftops, and that strange thing that used to roam Cinnabar East Coast. Got any cool fossils?

Mari: I've got some Dome fossils and Old Amber, and... (produces Enigma Crystal) ...this.

Steven: That's an unusual gem.

Mari: I got it from a Nintendo courier in a pokemart some time back.

Fossil Guy: Let me see what I can make of it, Mari. Hmmm...

(Some chipping-away of sediment and polishing later...)

Fossil Guy: This is too regular in form to be any kind of fossil.

Steven: It's also too smooth to be any kind of volcanically-produced crystal. Come to think of it, it reminds me of an old story from my home country...

(LP Note: That would be Hoenn, of course.)

Mari: Is this like the Adamant and Lustrous Orbs from Sinnoh?

Steven: No, I don't think is... Aha! I remember now! This gem is an intact piece of Soul Dew!

(LP Note: Also known as the Lati@s booster that's only permitted in Ubers.)

Fossil Guy: That old myth? This sure doesn't seem to be a soul of any kind though.

Mari: It's probably a pretty gem that acts as a focus.

Steven: hahaha, You might be closer to the truth than you think!

Fossil Guy: Here, I rather have a fossil than this gem...

(Back in the present, Indigo E4 HQ, Koga's Chamber)

Yuyuko glowered at Muk! She released a powerful PSI shockwave! In his partially minimised state, Muk evaded the shockwave!

Mari: Wait for the right moment! Don't exhaust yourself wasting attacks!

Mew: I bet you'd knocked yourself out before by running out of moves.

Lugia: I sure have. Some trainers are so bad at catching, or so unlucky, that I run out of PP and start Struggling until I collapse from exhaustion.

Yuyuko waited for the right moment. Muk tried to fire a Gunk Shot! Yuyuko used her PSI to pop the poison glob, distracting Muk!

Mari: Now, before he dodges!

Ignoring the splattering globs of poison, Yuyuko unleashed another PSI shockwave right under Muk!

Pokedex: It's super-effective! Muk fainted!

Koga: Good use of timing there. Venomoth!

(LP Note: Like Butterfree, Venomoth is another of my favourite Bugs. Tinted Lens makes it possible for the Sludge Bomb/Psychic/Bug Buzz combo to inflict at least neutral damage to almost every pokemon somehow, allowing you to put dents in anything with bad special defenses. Koga's Venomoth has Shield Dust, which would have been more useful if Venomoth was tougher.)

Yuyuko unleashed another PSI wave! Venomoth was batted out of the air!

Mew: Pity Venomoth isn't quite as fast or as powerful as Gengar though.

Pokedex: Koga sent out Crobat!

Mari: Yuyuko, enough! Let Kenji prove himself!

Next: Kenji the ninja Farfetch'd vs Koga's Crobat!

Lugia's more the type to play good old NES and SNES games, but whatever works, I guess. Oh, and Crobat has much better speed than poor Kenji, but the Ninja Duck still put up an admirable fight.

(Indigo, Elite 4 HQ - Koga's Chamber)

Koga: Your little duck wishes to prove his ninja technique? Very well, my Crobat shall oblige him!

Kenji was a little uncertain of what his first big battle would be like, yet his determination to prove himself gave him strength. Holding his leek in an under-wing Iaido stance, Kenji warily circled his opponent, waiting for his opportunity.

As the Crobat blurred from the use of Double Team, Kenji struck! His sudden burst of speed caught the bat off-guard despite its heightened evasion, allowing the ninja Duck to land a solid hit with his Leek.

Mew: No wonder Mari had him keep Aerial Ace!

Lugia: Technician Scyther laughs at the Evasion Clause with a powered-up Aerial Ace. Take your pick of Swords Dance or a Choice Band for a power booster.

Smarting from that attack, Crobat narrowed his eyes and dealt Kenji a painful crack with his wings, the worst of which was deflected by the Leek. Kenji slid back, riding the force of the blow, before springing forward with another Aerial Ace that this time made Crobat flutter wildly as he tumbled backwards from the force.

Pokedex: It's a critical hit!

Mari: Nicely done!

Koga: Good, clean attack; excellent use of blade arts to compensate for lack of muscle mass.

Mew: That, and a whole ton of Effort Points into attack.

Koga: However...

Crobat used Poison Fang, badly poisoning Kenji! The ninja duck retaliated with another Aerial Ace!

Koga: ...I believe my Crobat here ccn take many, many more attacks from Kenji.

Mari: It must be the lack of muscle mass.

Mew: Pity that Farfetch'd can't hit hard enough to be effective in a serious battle.

Lugia: It's not so much a low Attack stat than it is his poor durability.

Mew: So says Mr Uber-Wall.

Steadying himself with his Leek, Kenji winced as the Bad Poisoning sapped at his energy. Crobat was already approaching for another Wing Attack, and it was all he could do to leap high, barely avoiding Crobat as he opened his wings and Flew up into the shadows about the ceiling.

Mew: I thought that the only few HM moves worth using were Surf and Waterfall?

(LP Note: Whirlpool rules for trapping someone temporarily, perhaps long enough to finish them off. Rock Smash also works well for Serene Grace user Dunsparce, because it will have virtually assured armorbreaking properties. Defog would have been useful too if it swept away entry hazards as well, and the trifecta of Cut/Strength/Rock Climb are outclassed by Headbutt, Dizzy Punch, Crush Claw, Extremespeed, Body Slam, and even Return.)

Watching the Crobat scan the ceiling area for movement from behind a pillar, Kenji made his decision. Leaping from unexpected angle, he Flew right at Crobat at top speed, striking him with a perfect jousting manuver. As the poison sapped the last of his stamina, Kenji used his Leek to control his landing and signal to his Mistress at the same time.

Mari: Understood, Kenji! Yuyuko, wrap this one up!

Koga: Running away?

Mari: No, it's called a tactical retreat! Isn't it better to live to fight another day?

Yuyuko found Crobat using her switch-in as an opportunity to abuse the lack of Evasion Clause by Double Teaming again!

Mew: This is why Aurasphere is so popular this season. Not against Ghosts, of course.

Koga: There is a fair amount of truth in your statement, Mari - no-one should stand and fight to the very end without good reason!

As Yuyuko tried to land PSI attacks and Shadow Balls, Crobat kept trying to Bite her! Fortunately, Crobat didn't actually have knowledge of that move at the moment, and the Poison Fangs that were executed instead were less than effective. Using their close range as a hope to improve hitrate, Yuyuko attempted a Hypnosis! Crobat immediately slowed down as it tried to fight off the drowsiness!

Lugia: Nice use of a Wide Lens there.

Taking advantage of her moment, Yuyuko focused.

Pokedex: Yuyuko used PK Love Psychic! It was super-effective! Crobat fainted.

Koga: Excellent performance by your whole team! You exhibit a natural mindset for ninjitsu that is almost as good as your knack for battling, Mari!

Mari: Uh, thanks?

Koga: Should you wish to learn more of the ways of us Ninja, I can always leave a vacancy for you at our Gym-cum-School in Fuschia. Now...

(The door to the staircase up opens!)

Koga: I believe Bruno is next.

Mari: I'd like to heal my team first.

(Indigo E4 HQ - Bruno's Chamber)

Mari: Phew! It smells of old socks and changing rooms in here.

Bruno: I guess that air freshener I bought just isn't strong enough.

Mari: You work out a lot here, don't you?

Bruno: Let my muscles (flex) speak for themselves. I am the muscle of the Elite Four, Bruno the Strong!

Mari: Ah.

Bruno: My team has been trained in strength and power like I have! Can you weather this storm of raw muscle?

Mari: I don't know, I haven't seen your current team.

Bruno: Well then, let's begin! Hoo-ha!

(Interlude: an extract of Renko's quest through Platinum)

Location: Windworks Central Generator House, Windworks Valley

Mars: Oh? The little girl's back to play!

Renko: It's payback time for what you did to Carla!

(LP Note: Renko did a variant on a Single Character Challenge, only using her trusty Vulpix/Ninetales Carla to battle. She was only defeated once the whole challenge, by Mars's Purugly!)

Renko sent out Carla the Vulpix! Carla leapt high and launched a massive danmaku spray of Embers everywhere! Zubat was roasted to a crisp!

Mars: Pah! Purugly, put this intruder away just like you did earlier!

Purugly moved fast! Fakeout knocked Carla over! Undaunted, she retaliated with an Energy Ball!

(LP Note: Carla was passed to Renko via an unhatched egg. She is a 4th-generation bred Vulpix that knows Energy Ball and Hypnosis, and has Stantler blood in her pedigree.)

The explosion of solar energy prevented Purugly from seeing the follow-through! Carla toppled her foe with a concentrated Ember blast to the face!

Mars: Ugh! S-such power! Oh, well, you may have won, but I have also got all the energy I need for our plans from this place!

Team Galactic Blasts off.

Renko: That was a superbly-timed Energy Ball there, Carla!

As mentioned in the General thread, Mari is now the proud owner of Nouct, a Shiny Venonat :D

(Route 24, sometime in the Future)

Palkia: Have at you this sneak preview of things not yet here!

Dialga: Hey, quit doing my job!

Mari: All right, Persian, Gnaw, let's get ready for another trip into Cerulean Cave!

Encounter flash!

Mari: A Venonat? Hold on...

Twinkle

Mari: Venonats don't usually have blue eyes! I've got to capture this one so I can learn more about him! Go, Premier Ball!

click, click, click...

Mari: (crossing fingers)

Ding!

Mari: Success!

(Meanwhile, back in the present, at Indigo E4 HQ - Bruno's Chamber)

Bruno: Hitmontop, go!

Mari: Gnaw, match him!

As Gnaw prepared to attack, Hitmontop spun faster than normal! Gnaw stumbled as the whirling Quick Attack connected, but he rallied and countered with an unblockable Waterfall charge at point blank!

Gnaw: Rawr! (I pity the fools who rush in on me!)

Lugia: They still show reruns of A-Team on the International Channel? Man, I wish the Kimono Girls would leave me a waterproof portable TV in my den!

(Bruno is unfazed as Hitmontop sails over his head and lands painfully behind him.)

Bruno: Smart move by your Feraligatr there, to counter Hitmontop by out-wrestling him at melee. Next up (raises pokeball), Hitmonlee!

Gnaw immediately burst ahead as Hitmonlee materialised, Waterfall generating a column of Elemental force about him. A springy CRACK echoed as the Hitmon blocked the charge with his knee, grimacing with paing as Gnaw rebounded slightly. Favouring his injured leg, Hitmonlee tried to concentrate on the fight with Focus Energy, but Gnaw's tail was already following through with Brick Break at an impressive speed.

Whomp!

Bruno: Impressive!

Mew: I'll say! Someone sure knows their kung fu!

Lugia: Must be all those silly martial arts comedies they show on the International Channel.

(LP Note: Must be all that Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle I've been watching lately. Also, as I mentioned earlier, Bruno is definitely one of the easiest to defeat of the Elite Four, so the rest of this battle is going to be glossed over so I can move along to Karen... and then Lance - and then afterwards, KANTO!)

The rest of the battle proves to be brutally unbalanced in favour of Mari. Between Gnaw's skill and power, and Yuyuko's super-effective PSI, Bruno's Onix, Hitmonchan, and Machamp fall almost embarassingly quickly.

Bruno: I-I see that you really know how to teach your pokemon to overcome raw physical power.

Mari: Thank you!

Bruno: I have nothing else to say, Champion-to-be! Go on to your next great challenge!

Next: Karen!

Previously, on Soul Silver, Mari had just bested Bruno. But, what if things had happened differently?

(WHAT IF?! - Indigo E4 HQ, BRUNO)

Bruno: I'm down to my last pokemon now, my strongest one of all.

Mari: C'mon Gnaw! Just a little more to go!

Bruno: Go, Machamp!

The scent of battle rich in his nose, Gnaw BURST forward, Waterfall creating plumes of Elemental force behind him! As he spotted the Machamp's "Hit me with your best shot!" stance, Gnaw realized too late that he should have let Machamp make the first move...

(Gnaw used Waterfall! Machamp used Counter!)

Completely battered by the Machamp's devastating counterattack, Gnaw grumbled to himself as he crumpled over.

Bruno: Powerful attack, but not good enough!

Mari: No~!

(Meanwhile, back in our main timeline...)

Dialga: Oh crap, I left a fragment of an alternate timeline floating about! I'd better purge it before it interferes with continuity!

(Indigo E4 HQ - Karen's Hall)

Mari: I hope you all feel better.

Gnaw: Grmph. (A bit of rest would be better than just chugging Lemonade and Milk, though.)

Karen: Welcome! I am the last of the Elite Four, Karen.

Mari: Uh, hello.

Karen: You're such a little dear! (notices Gnaw) Oh, what a wonderfully strong-looking Feraligatr you have, Mari!

Mari: You like strong-looking Pokemon?

Karen: Mmm-hmmm! That's why I specialise in the Dark type! I like their bad-boy image.

Mari: I just have whoever I take a liking to in my team.

Karen: (palms pokeball) Let's go.

Pokedex: Elite Four Karen wishes to battle! She sent out an Umbreon!

Mew: Stronger than the Kimono Sister's Umbreon, I should think.

(LP Note: A more annoying moveset, certainly.)

Lugia: I wonder why Nintendo and the League don't respect the Evasion Clause?

Mew: So they can force people to use the perfect accuracy moves?

(LP Note: You can still mess up a Double Team abuser with the fastest Taunts or Encores you can muster, entry hazards, damaging weather, and of course, ignoring their evasion boost and hammering them flat before the evasion gets ridiculous. Do not ever forget that evasion is not flawless. Also, lol Swords Dance Scizor or Scyther spamming Aerial Ace, or Surprise Scizor with Vacuum Wave.)

Lugia: It's still annoying to have people abuse it though.

Mari: Go, Kenji!

As Kenji landed, he rebounded of the floor with a swordmaster's leap, soaring high as he shoved his leek in his beak and Flew up. As he did so, Umbreon crouched and concentrated, his outline becoming blurred as Double Team created an evasion-raising optical illusion.

I'm back, with another update!

Mari: About time too.

Mari's party: Gnaw, Sosuke, Yuyuko, Kenji, Leafeon, Kangaskhan.

(Indigo E4 HQ - Karen)

Umbreon, secure in his cloak of afterimages, darted about in an attempt to evade Kenji's incoming Fly attack.

Mari: Aim for his shadow, Kenji!

Noting the Umbreon's movement, Kenji focused hard, then dropped in a power dive, striking home with his Leek as he rebounded from the floor. It was a good for him that he rebounded, for as he shot past Umbreon, he narrowly avoided getting kicked in the back as the Umbreon tried to Pay him Back.

As Kenji landed, he brought his Leek about and around, using his Aerial Ace art to cut stright through Umbreon's illusions. He managed to hit several times in this way before Umbreon managed to confuse him.

As the ninja duck reeled under the effects of Confuse Ray, he was still able to hit Umbreon a couple more times before Umbreon slammed him across the room with a Payback-powered kick.

Mew: Payback is definitely a move perfect for Umbreon, especially when paired with Curse.

Bah, thought Kenji as he barely managed to prop himself up with his Leek, If only I had a little more strength! I was so close to winning!

Karen: Your Farfetch'd is certainly very spirited!

Mari: He is quite Adamant.

Lugia: Was that really Kenji's nature?

Mew: Yep! I got a glimpse at his stats through Mari's pokedex. And yes, he really does need much more strength to be more effective in his Art.

Mari: Of course, he has reached his limit, so I'm calling him back before he really injures himself. (palms pokeball). Go, Kangaskhan!

Kangaskhan was prepared to launch from her Pokeball, and did so, hopping surprisingly nimbly over Umbreon's Faint Attack and kicking him over with a perfect Fakeout. As the Umbreon stumbled, she immediately followed up with a Headbutt, toppling him.

Karen: Would you look at that! It looks like your Farfetch'd did do more damage than we all suspected.

Mari: Unfortunately, he's not that tough either.

Mew: If only Farfetch'd could evolve!

Karen: Gengar, go!

Gengar used Focus Blast! The attack missed. Kangaskhan managed to get close and Crunch! Gengar fainted.

Lugia: It's about as accurate as Blizzard and Thunder outside of Hail and Rain, if not worse.

Karen: Hmmm, perhaps I should not rely too much on Focus Blast in future.

(LP Note: Nevertheless, it's one of the only ways you can cram Fighting-type damage onto several Special attackers, as Aura Sphere and Vacuum Wave are not too common.)

Karen: Well, then, Murkrow, go!

Kangaskhan Headbutted Murkrow! The burd took the opportunity to use Faint Attack!

Mari: Wait, burd?!

Mew: I wish I could watch that movie.

Karen: I loved Robert Downey Jr's portrayl of Tony Stark, and Ivan Vanko was amazing.

(LP Note: I enjoyed it too, the guy is practically an alternate-universe counterpart to ol' Tony.)

Kangaskhan used Drain Punch to recover her health! Murkrow took advantage of the moment to create a Whirlwind!

Mari: Ack!

Kangaskhan was blown about the room - her Pokeball recalled her just in case! The fierce wind shook a pokeball from Mari's belt! Leafeon was dragged out!

Karen: Nice move, huh?

Mari: A bit cheap, though.

Lugia: It's a great way to get rid of that Charizard that just Belly Drummed, in any case.

Leafeon barely dodged Murkrow's Pluck attack! He used Facade, and kicked Murkow against a wall!

Karen: Oh! Nice move there. (recalls Murkrow) Now, Vileplume!

Leafeon Quickly darted forward and struck! Unfortunately, Vileplume was able to use her Stun Spores on him as he prepared to dart forward again!

Mari: Just as planned! C'mon, Leafeon, wrap this one up!

Meanwhile, back in Johto...

(Ecruteak Pokecenter)

Chris: Thanks, Renko! I'll take good care of this Pichu!

Renko: If you meet Mari again, trade this little kid to her, all right?

(Ilex Forest, after catching the Farfetch'd and receiving HM Cut)

Chris: That was a little tricky, but easier than chasing Ninja Ducks all over the place like I remember having to do last time.

(Pikachu-coloured Puchuu Pichu sensed something, unlocking his Cherish Ball from the inside!)

Chris: What's wrong?

(A little yellow head peeked out from behind the Forest Shrine!)

Chris: Another Pichu? Is she your friend?

(The little Pichu behind the shrine shyly approaches. Shiny Pichu happily pounces her with a Piii! and a joyful hug! Tumbling about, the two young pokemon run around about for a bit.)

Old Man: It looks like those two children know each other, hmmmm?

Chris: They're quite lively, yeah.

Old Man: I hope you weren't planning to go near the Shrine - its protector has made people vanish when they wander too close.

Chris: Vanishing, or time-travelling?

Old Man: What?

Chris: I bet some people appeared out of nowhere in the past, right?

Old Man: Perhaps, but what does this have to do with the Protector?

Chris: I have a feeling I know who the Protector is.

(LP Note: It's Celebi. GS Ball hopefully no longer needed, lol. Maybe Gen 5 will finally give us Celebi? Pleeeeeease?)

Old Man: Anyway, it looks like this little child wants to join you.

(Notched-ear Pichu looks at Pikachu-colored Pichu, then at Chris pleadingly in an "I want to follow him!" way.)

Chris: (sigh) Neither of you will forgive me if I say no, huh...

Both Pichus: Pichu~! (Never!)

Old Man: I have an old Pokeball here.

Notched-ear Pichu used the pokeball on herself! She joined Chris's party!

(LP Note: This little girl comes armed with Helping Hand, Volteccer Volt Tackle, Swagger, and Pain Split.)

(Meanwhile, back at Indigo...)

Vileplume drew closer to Leafeon, spraying Acid at him! Leafeon used Razor Leaf (Shield) to block the spray, and lashed out with a boosted Facade-powered kick! Vileplume was forced back!

Mari: Excellent feint! One more kick will do the trick!

Leafeon was slowed by the numbness of Paralysis! Vileplume took the chance to heal up with stored Moonlight! All that healing was wasted when another Facade-powered kick landed right in the roots!

Mew: Oooh, that one's going to really sting!

Lugia: Ouch! At least that Electivire Sosuke didn't hit me THERE when he was Riding the Lightning, otherwise I'd really have fainted.

Pokedex: It's a critical hit! Vileplume has fainted from the pain!

Karen: You sure your Leafeon isn't an Umbreon in disguise?

Mari: Well, the Storage System says he is a Leafeon.

Karen: Oh, well, I still have my Houndoom!

Houndoom rears and breathes a cone of flames! Fully aware of Houndoom's legendary endlessly-burning fires, Leafeon panics and jumps back, using his Razor Leaves to absorb and deflect the flames! He signals to Mari!

Mari: Understood! Gnaw, take over from here!

Mari: Three days more until I can get that Event Scizor :D

(Indigo E4 HQ - Karen)

Karen: Oh, wonderfull! Now I get to see how tough your Feraligatr is!

Mari: You know what Houndoom Fire can do to you if it penetrates your hide, Gnaw! Avoid the heart of the flames!

Mew: I've heard about it in gossip from the migrating Latios and Latias herds. Apparently the burns from a Houndoom never stop hurting.

Lugia: That's seriously messed up, although a Trainer with a Houndoom scar has the potential to be a total badass.

(LP Note: Presumably the flammable chemicals Houndoom uses can cause long-lasting nerve damage, which is why they "never stop burning".)

Lugia: I'm just lucky no-one ever used Burn to make me easier to catch.

Expertly twisting around in what appeared to be a complicated dance step, Gnaw neatly dodged the spray of flames Houndoom blew at him, the burning chemicals eating into the floor as the stream succumbed to gravity.

Keeping a reasonable distance, Gnaw decided not to risk some terrible burns and waited for an opportunity. Dodging Flamethrower bursts, he was almost nailed by a Dark Pulse that surged at him without warning, the splash knocking him over.

Rolling upright, Gnaw caught a glimpse of his opponent planning something Nasty, and quickly lunged at him.

Karen: What grace and speed in something so strong!

Mari: I know, Gnaw's quite a marvellous example of a Feraligatr. Finish it quick, before the Nasty Plot Boosts overwhelm you!

Using the blast from a Dark Pulse to propel himself, Gnaw used Waterfall to boost his speed and inertia, and shot right up to Houndoom before he could breathe a cone of Nasty Plot-boosted Flamethrower. Tail and claw met heated fangs with a mighty clash!

Pokedex: Houndoom used Crunch! Gnaw used a Torrent-boosted Waterfall! It was super-effective! Houndoom fainted.

Karen: Oh, I've lost! At least it was to such a magnificent beast!

Mari: Houndoom has some pretty nasty moves on it though.

Karen: Strong Pokemon, weak Pokemon - I think you should just win with whatever you like, if you are really that good, hmmmm? Go on, Mari, the Champion is waiting <3

Mew: What a truthful statement!

(LP Note: I've sort-of taken Karen's advice, which is why I use all sorts of non-OU pokemon. Of course, it helps that many of my favourites at least have some seriously good movepools, abilities or stats to back them up, like Butterfree's godlike movepool paired with Compound Eyes.)

Mari: I want to heal my guys up first.

Karen: Sure, there's no rush.

Champion Update tomorrow. In the meantime, have a glimpse at my Heart Gold adventure, where Chris has entered Goldenrod.

(Goldenrod)

Chris: I ponder the significance of a Daycare where eggs are found on Route 34. Maybe I shouldn't think hard about it, in case I learn too much.

(He notices the Radio Tower)

Chris: Oh, hey! I remember that I need to get that Radio Card... again.

(LP Note: By the will of Arceus, Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina, Chris has been brought back from the Limbo of the Lost (Save Files) back from my childhood days of playing Silver. He still remembers much of what he used to do back then.)

Chris: Hi, I'm here for that quiz.

Radio Tower Receptionist: Here you go, fill in the form, please!

(Whitney notices.)

Chris: Hmmm, all the questions are quite familiar... All done!

Receptionist: All right! ...Let's see... Hey, you got them all correct the first time!

Whitney: How do you do that?

Chris: I learnt all the answers in my adventures.

Whitney: You look pretty tough for a trainer! I'd like to meet you in my Gym!

Chris: Sure, I'll go over later (Whitney, huh? I remember her Miltank).

(He then pays a visit to the Underground. Lyra's phone number and a few Super Nerd/Pokemaniac battles later...)

Chris: Where's that Coin Case?! I swear there was one down here!

(Perplexed, he pops up and wanders into the Name Rater's tent.)

Chris: I see you redecorated since I last remember.

Name Rater: Well, my Clan's TV programme in Sinnoh has proven quite profitable, so I got an upgrade too. Want to name your team?

Chris: Sure.

(Bayleef remains Foil; Heracross is dubbed "Eisenkafer", or Iron Beetle (accent marks not included); Butterfree (male) is named Stunn, and Aipom (female) is named Tiny Kong.)

Name Rater: There we go, some more character to your team!

(Next, Chris heads to the bike shop and offers to advertise their bikes.)

Chris: I'd like a bike in exchange for my marketing skills.

Shop Owner: Deal!

(Finally, he heads to the Game Corner.)

Chris: Hey, where're the slots?! The olde arcade machines?!

Man: I rebuilt this place to be more cerebral! You ever tried Voltorb Flip, young man?

Chris: Not yet.

Man: Here, take this Coin Case! I'd like to see how skilled you are in minesweeping!

(LP Note: Voltron Voltorb Flip is basically Minesweeper meets Sudoku, and it's more addictive than Slots. My personal tip: Extrapolate by eliminating dead zones, whether they are '1' or Voltorb spaces, then unveil the most likely suspects. Abuse that memo system they give you!)

Chris: Hey, this isn't that (VOLTORB) -argh!

Man: Don't worry, you'll get the hang of it...

Next: Back to Mari! She'll face the CHAMPION soon!

It has begun, the beginning of the end of the starting chapter of a Trainer's career... The Champion awaits within.

Mari: Since when did I have a narrator?

Lugia: Since we started listening in.

Mew: You'd think Mari'd have some trouble.

Lugia: The way she trains? Not likely.

(Indigo E4 HQ - CHAMPION)

Mari: I have a feeling... Gnaw, let Sosuke lead the party for a bit.

(The Feraligatr trades a BROfist-bump with Sosuke, and bumps Mari's backpack as he steps behind her.)

Gnaw: Rrrrmm. (Lend me this little thing in case I need it.)

Mari: ...! That item you took! Gnaw, you can't possibly be...

Gnaw: mmph. (It's just in case my hunch proves to be true.)

The hallway of Champions is well-light, the statues of past Champions highlighted.

Mari: I recognise some of them. Hold on, that old statue behind there-!

Familiar voice: Yes, that one is who you think it is.

Mari: Samuel Oak?!

Lugia: Oh, HIM. I sent him a Silver Wing back in the day, and he didn't come to be tested by me D:

(LP Note: Oak's dummied-out party in Red and Blue is far superior to his grandson's team, and he's shown to be an AWESOME battler in PokeSpe. Hey, even ingame, AGATHA mentions how he used to be a cool dude!)

Lugia: Now, if only I knew where Agatha is now. I kinda wish I had sent HER a Silver Wing.

Mari: Oh, there's Blue's statue too, and Red's one too, of course.

Familiar voice: Yeah, I was around to see it put up in here.

Mari: ...! You?!

A statue of a certain guy she met in Blackthorn, even newer than Red's, stands out near the raised arena. The name at its base is sharp and fresh.

Lance: Yes, me. I hope you're not too surprised.

Mari: I thought you were still in the Elite Four?

Lance: League rotation. I was rotated out some months back, so I went back to train in Johto; that was why I was near the Lake of Rage and was able to meet you there.

Mari: When did you become a Champion, anyway?

Lance: Oh, just about a fortnight before you showed up. I had one of my many Dragonites fly me back from Blackthorn so I could get here on time.

Mari: Visiting Clair?

Lance: She seems a little reluctant to meet me though. Since you have got her badge, did something happen to her?

Mari: No, not really, just a little Charisma Breaking.

Lance: Oh, well. (produces pokeball) Anyway, I will accept your challenge in my capacity as a League Champion!

Champion Lance wishes to battle! He sent out a Gyarados!

Mari: I Knew It!! Sosuke, pay no heed to his Intimidating visage!

Sosuke ignored his Physical Power drop! He unleashed a Thunderbolt that toasted Gyarados in a single prolonged crackling burst!

Lance: ...I walked into that one, didn't I? Maybe I should have gotten some Wacan Berries for something like that. Oh, well - Dragonite, go!

Sosuke wove back and forth, before attempting to startle Dragonite by feinting! It worked - Dragonite reflexively let loose a Thunder Wave that powered up Motor Drive!

Lance: Ah, that wasn't supposed to happen!

Mari: I read up about that one from my penpal's notes on her 'site; without training to negate it, Dragonite tend to retain a reflex action where they attempt to unleash Thunder Wave if they are caught off-guard, a survival instinct honed when they were Dratini.

Using his boosted speed to dance around a comparatively sluggish Dragon Rush, Sosuke clipped his foe with an Ice Punch! His reduced Attack power made it less than effective.

Lance: That's pretty obscure, even I haven't heard of it yet.

Mari: It was in her research notes she was writing for Professor Rowan.

Mew: Rowan's a scarily awesome guy.

Dodging another Dragon Rush by means of grazing, Sosuke struck a glancing blow with Ice Punch! Dragonite was barely able to resist succumbing to the cold!

Lance: Stay in the fight, Dragonite! (Uses Full Restore)

Mari: Not good, Sosuke can't hit hard enough to decisively win.

As if understanding Mari's intentions, Sosuke jumped high in the air, retreating into his Pokeball as he did so. A rattling in her belt warned Mari to release Gnaw's pokeball in time, as the Feraligatr burst into the fight just as Sosuke's pokeball landed in front of her!

Lance: Your pokemon prepared for this before you knew of it?!

Mari: Not exactly. I taught them a little bit of how to tag on the fly, but I never expected them to actually begin practicing it 'Live' so soon...

Lance: That reminds me of Red, you know. He had the wrong pokemon in the lead during our League battle three years ago, and they switched just in time to avoid getting Hyper Beamed by one of my Dragonites back then.

Expertly deflecting a clumsy Dragon Rush, Gnaw used Dragonite's movement to knock him aside, biting him in the back with Ice-coated Fangs! Dragonite succumbed to the cold shock and fainted immediately.

Mari: Am I really that good...?

Lance: You might be getting there, if Gnaw can fight like that. (reaches for a pokeball) Oh, bugger, I already sent out my Dragonite with Thunder! Never mind, I'll improvise.

Lance sent out a second Dragonite...

Pretty intense fight. Your battle narration has been one of the best qualities of this.

It's a plot! ...Quite a well written one too.

I'm back! Been distracted lately by Protector IV (a Tower Defense game) and slowbeef's Metroid Prime Let's Play.

(Indigo E4 HQ - Lance)

Mari: Just how many Dragonites do you have anyway?

Lance: Quite a few. I've brought 3 of them here today.

Lance's current Dragonite wastes no time in unleashing the power of Hyper Beam! Gnaw, having fought several Hyper Beam users, as well as Lugia with her Aeroblast, already knew what to expect as he dodged. Unfortunately, the Dragonite was also prepared for such evasion as he worked his neck, make the Hyper Beam arc after the feraligatr.

Mari: Gnaw, watch out!

As the beam came dangerously close to grazing Gnaw and sucking him into the worst of it, the Held Item hung round his neck one a string began to glow! The Quick Claw activated!

Lance: That's a clever ploy by your Feraligatr there.

The speed boost let Gnaw move faster than the Dragonite could aim the Hyper Beam! It fizzled out, leaving the drained Dragonite unable to defend against an Ice Fang attack.

Mew: Hax item clause!

Lugia: Overruled! Mari's opponents are clearly defying the Evasion clause, so she's allowed some leeway there.

(LP Note: Lol clauses.)

Lance: How unexpected! I hardly see trainers make use of the Quick Claw these days.

Mew: Maybe because its odds of activating are unreliable at best?

Mari: The unexpected can bring victory into my grasp, then :3

As Lance sent out his third and final Dragonite, Gnaw immediately lunged as the Dragon materialized, fangs crystallizing with fresh frost.

Lance: Nevertheless...

Dragonite #3 cleverly uses his claws to deflect the Ice Fang attack! As Gnaw follows through, the countering Dragon Rush is similarly parried with the ridges on his tail!

Lance: my methods do result in some pretty impressive results.

The back-and-forth exchange of fierce attacks carries on, at least until Gnaw spots an opening! As the Dragonite tries to pin Gnaw's arms for a point-blank Hyper Beam, he throws his feet down and SLIDES at the Dragonite, aiming to knock his opponent over! As the Dragonite lets Gnaw go in order to bound back from the attempted grapple, his Hyper Beam misfires as he tries to cancel into a Thunder Wave on instinct!

Lance: That wasn't supposed to happen!

Mari: Thunder Wave instinct strikes again.

Gnaw takes advantage of the moment to strike! Dragonite falls out of the air and crash-lands in an awkward heap...
