Proposing In Memoriam. Despite a few of the examples, its definition marks it as having nothing to do with storytelling.
Remind me again why pages in the Trivia section aren't "tropes"? (Definition.)
I ask because the description on the Trivia page isn't clear enough; how they're applied to the bundles of facts listed on the wiki, would make them tropes in their own right. And on this page, "Trivia is for insignificant factoids about a work or its creation that cannot be determined from the work itself." doesn't imply that they can't be tropes, either.
What I noticed was that while there were some that there were some pages that people might reasonably not call "tropes", there are also others on that page that are still tropes in their own right. Meta tropes, if you will. Same applies to YMMV.

"Vegeta, what is the square root of a number greater than eighty-one million?" "IT'S OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAAAND!!" *crushes calculator*The wiki is a bit inconsistent in that regard. We use two different definitions of Trope: the first, broader one means "any concept, pattern, or device in and around storytelling", which includes everything from YMMV to Trivia to Audience Reactions.
The second is a more narrow term used for organization: "a concept, pattern, or storytelling device found objectively within the work.
We've searched for terminology to describe the things that are not tropes under that second definition, somewhat in vain.
The point remains, though, that there is a definable distinction between In-Universe tropes and those that constitute Trivia, YMMV, or Audience Reactions.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"So, I Want My Jetpack has enough votes to be put in Trivia (and it is definitely Trivia as currently defined). That said, it isn't Trivia in use (it gets used as someone complaining that we don't have futuristic technology, which really is a separate trope).
TRS Thread here. I'd like to get that squared away before we make the move to Trivia.

"Vegeta, what is the square root of a number greater than eighty-one million?" "IT'S OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAAAND!!" *crushes calculator*When people talk about meta-tropes, they are usually referring to the various forms of Playing with a Trope. The word "meta" is also a bit overused, in my entirely personal opinion.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Out-Of-Universe Tropes, then.
"Vegeta, what is the square root of a number greater than eighty-one million?" "IT'S OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAAAND!!" *crushes calculator*Ahem, no. Tropes are storytelling; except for Paratext and the like, they are In-Universe by default.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI want to create a Trivia page for Happythankyoumoreplease. In case I created one, it'll be included in the index immediately right?
Yes. Trivia is an auto-indexing namespace.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanBut by the first definition above, they would actually be out-of-universe and yet still tropes for storytelling... no? It's not like I suggested "Non-storytelling Tropes" or something like that.
(For some reason something prevented my reply from being posted on this thread. Glitch?)

"Vegeta, what is the square root of a number greater than eighty-one million?" "IT'S OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAAAND!!" *crushes calculator*Nope. In-Universe is in the story; It would be weird (save for, as mentioned, Paratext and the like) for storytelling to not be part of the story.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanSo are we going by the narrower and not broader definition of "trope", then?

"Vegeta, what is the square root of a number greater than eighty-one million?" "IT'S OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAAAND!!" *crushes calculator*For purposes of the trope/trivia distinction, yes.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I still stand by my view that they are tropes, and a good number of them on the Trivia page are tropes in their own right. In fact, until an hour or so before I first stumbled upon this thread, I didn't even know YMMV didn't count as "tropes".
At the very least, I suggest that explicit claims that trivia "is not a trope" should be removed.
"Vegeta, what is the square root of a number greater than eighty-one million?" "IT'S OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAAAND!!" *crushes calculator*There's "trivia tropes", "audience tropes", and "regular tropes". If you prefer "objective tropes" or "storytelling tropes", but they're redundant statements.
The "real" tropes are what the wiki is focused on, we just catalogue the other types because we're obsessed with them, too. ;) It doesn't make them "bad" tropes, just.... not trope tropes.

We probably need a new crowner now since the current one looks bloated.

I added Written-In Infirmity to the crowner. It seems to be just a collection of "this actor happened to be injured/pregnant during filming, and they wrote it in".
You've got roaming bands of armed, aggressive, tyrannical plumbers coming to your door, saying "Use our service, or else!"I wonder why X Meets Y is on the crowner. It's a Just for Fun page, which is its own type of "trope".
Check out my fanfiction!~eroock added it a while ago. Maybe he'll explain.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanObviously a brain fart of mine. Removed.
On a related note: Can Fun threads be flagged in trope example lists? I believe that's how it happened.
Crown Description:
The Trivia category is for narrative conventions that cannot be determined from the final product itself. These are details of production and behind-the-scenes events that influenced the end result of the product. This crowner is used in conjunction with this thread. Please post in the thread before adding tropes to this list. Previous crowner here. Make a new crowner after 40 tropes.
It's not a trope, but it's not trivia either. It's a type of fan work and should not be listed in the main articles.
