Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

And Boll treats this character as justified!? I mean, I understand lashing out at societal injustices to a degree, but exactly how does forcing children to kill themselves work toward bettering society?

I wrote Bill's original writeup. I have a better one, which I'll post if more people decide to keep him.

So, anything on whether or not Vecna can be approved?

While I can see Vecna qualifying, we'll need an example writeup that has to demonstrate how he fits the trope.

Going back, it seems like there already ARE some votes to keep Bill. Here's my rewrite:

Rampage: Bill Williamson is a sadistic domestic terrorist who takes great pleasure in committing large-scale acts of violence. He attempts to justify his actions by claiming to be a revolutionary who's just doing what he has to in order to fight overpopulation and government corruption. However, the way he acts towards his victims reveals this to be a shallow excuse. He shoots up his small town in the first movie, and wracks up a body count of over 100. He enjoys every minute of this massacre, and mocks the people he kills as they beg for their lives. Several of his victims die simply because they inconvenienced him in some way prior to his rampage. Afterward, he kills his supposed best friend and frames him for the act while he skips town with a bag of money he stole during the attack. In the sequel, he takes over a TV studio. He kills several of the hostages he takes based on assumptions he makes about their lives. When one tearfully tells him that he killed her sister in his previous rampage, he responds by mocking her crying and taunting her. He then forces a male hostage at gunpoint to beat her up. After his demands are met, he lets the hostages go, only to kill them and everyone else in the immediate area by blowing up the studio while he escapes. In the final scene, he gives a little girl a gun and encourages her to go home and kill her parents before committing suicide. Claiming to do what he does for the good of humanity, Bill's utter enjoyment of the violence he causes and completely unnecessary acts of sadism out him as nothing more than a mentally disturbed psychopath who kills purely for the fun of it.

[down] trimmed it slightly.

Okay, how about this:

  • Likely the most dreaded and feared villain ever to grace the face of Oerth is Vecna, currently the God of Secrets and Lichdom. A once-human wizard who became the most feared of liches, Vecna's evil deeds could - and have - filled volumes. One notable example would be his conquest of the city of Fleeth, shortly after becoming a lich. The city officials begged for their lives, offering the whole city and their wealth in exchange for mercy. When Vecna wasn't satisfied with that offer, they offered their own lives. Vecna considered this, and gave one of them, Artau, and his family, to his lieutenant Kas, who tortured them to death in front of the other officials in an ordeal that lasted a day. Vecna then said he was still unsatisfied, and had every citizen in the city slaughtered except the remaining officials, forcing them to watch as he did, then had every victims' head stacked, with those belonging to the friends and families of the officials prominent. He never killed the surviving officials, claiming he was satisfied then, and allowed them to leave the city, saying they'd be under his protection for the rest of their lives - simply so they would live it with the horror they had seen. What truly sets Vecna apart from other evil gods is that no matter how powerful he becomes, he desires more, and like Lolth, cares nothing for anybody but himself. Unlike Lolth, he thinks on a far greater scale, and would unmake and consume reality (killing billions in the process) simply to remake it with himself as the only true god. (This was his actual plan in the epic module Die Vecna Die, but while he failed, the ramifications caused changes in the universe that explained the differences between the 2nd and 3rd editions of Dungeons And Dragons.)

[up][up][up] Definite keep on Bill. Taking his character in full and how he just shrugs off the one possible redeeming trait you mentioned, he's either a Knight Templar of the worst order or just a Straw Hypocrite.

Please remove the spoiler tags from write-ups, though. This trope is Spoilered Rotten.

Two questions:

  • 1: Is a character disqualified if they do not kill a person who just saved their life? (They suffer a near death experience and are saved by a stranger and then leave without harming them or thanking them.)

  • 2: Should sociopaths be disqualified due to reasons of Blue-and-Orange Morality? (Since the parts of their brains that process empathy is inactive they are literally incapable of feeling it for reasons beyond their control.)

[up] 1) Don't know.
2) That opens up a whole bigass can of worms. They know right from wrong, they just don't care (hello there Joker and Carnage).

  1. If it's out of gratefulness, then they'd be disqualified. If it's for some future self-interest, or because they don't have the time to finish off their saviour as the danger is still there, or because they are in a hurry, they can still count.
  2. Sociopathy in fiction or real life has nothing to do with Blue-and-Orange Morality - the latter requires a morality system incomprehensible to humans, not merely "weird or exotic" moral system as many people misuse it.

If I may play Devil's advocate, Carnage has claimed he has a goal in what he does, although it's a very sick one. (It's mentioned under the Chaos Is Evil Trope.) Basically, he thinks Law is an illusion and Chaos is the only reality, and he wants to show everyone that. (It would be easy to brand him as Chaotic Stupid if not for the fact that many of his assaults are well-thought out, making him, at best, a walking contradiction.)

Not that I say he should be taken off the list...

was wondering, can a character from a fanfic be listed if that fanfic does not have a page here? I think I have a candidate.

Isn't there a specific folder for Fanfic examples? If it's a stand out example, it can be added there.

It just can't be crosswicked.

It could get out of hand quick with examples, particularity Dark Fic ones.

I was wondering because its from a Darkfic and, like Very Melon said, if we made an entry for every one out there, it could get out of hand. Nevertheless, here is the example:

Note: Do not read if you have a weak stomach.

The fanfic is called "Revenge Of The Blank Flanks" (yes, another mlp one, don't ask me why the shows fans are so fucked up, and please don't get mad at me for proposing another example, I'm just doing my job), it has the CMC hiring Gilda to go and scare Diamond Tiara as revenge for bullying them. Instead of scaring her like they told her to do, Gilda rapes, tortures, kills, and eats her. When Gilda returns and demands to be paid, the CMC are horrified and refuse to pay her. Because they refuse to pay her, Gilda gets mad and swallows them all alive. The three die horrible slow deaths being digested alive in her stomach. The next day, Gilda goes back to the Griffin kingdom. The end.
