This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

I might have made a few punctuation errors like using a comma instead of a semi-colon, (and the lets not get into the whole Mark/Marc debate he has spelled it both ways at different time), but I always spell and grammar check my work to make sure every thing makes since. Now I will admit that my spelling and grammar is not the greatest (I have quite a few learning disabilities) however I worked hard to make sure every thing I posted was correct. The only change in sentence structure made was more because of the editor’s personal preference then it being grammatically incorrect.

Also that person made a few errors with their edits notable labeling that a clear subversion of the Pie in the Face trope was a variation since the trope was set up and something else went in her face that was not a pie (which the judges made clear did not count)

Please allow me to edit as a few punctuation errors and a long time spelling dispute should not keep anybody from editing this wiki

[up] In your edit to Camping a Crapper, I see two formatting errors and natteriffic descriptions that need to be trimmed down.

MissingEpisode.Western Animation: The edit reason alone is jacked up, plus there are three formatting errors, four spelling/grammar errors, two run-on sentences that need to be broken up, and more natteriffic material.

Woobie.Doctor Who: Two spelling errors, at least one missing apostrophe, and run-on sentences.

Series. What Would You Do Nickelodeon: Multiple misspellings, at least one huge run-on sentence, "conmen" instead of "common"

Series.Double Dare 1986: I'm not even going to bother to count the errors...another troper already fixed them. You even butchered the edit reason on the 11th.

RoleAssociation.Anime English: You fixed some of the problems, but not all of them.

Needless to say, there are issues that need to be addressed.

I am going to explain my view on things and I want you to tell me what I did wrong. I will admit my punctuation is not the best and I some times put homonyms in place of the right words but the sentences are not unreadable and still make scene.

1. What are the formatting errors and exactly what about the description is nattery I just described what happened, (I seriously want to know this so I can improve)

2. I will admit I do not spell and grammar check the reason section as it is just a brief blurb of the actions I did. I do not see any run on sentences and make sure they are of connected thoughts and of acceptable length. What the person claimed to be one was a normal length (though I should have put in a comma). What was misspelled I thought I caught all the errors before I posted it. Also what was nattery about it I just added info on the missing episodes. Finally the editor that changed the Scooby-Doo post removed important relative information (there place in production and what the episodes names are) and added a Take That! which he has no evidence for.

3. Again there are no run-on sentences I make sure I make sure they are connected thoughts. I will admit to missing the apostrophe in girlfriend’s but that is the only error I see.

4. What was the huge run on sentence? I do not see any long sentences period and they all contain a thought on a single subject.

5 and 6 have already been addressed

Please answer these questions because I want to improve in your eyes so I can work on here again.

How about I PM all my prospective edits to you Willbyr before I post them for the next few month and you can tell me what is good and what needs to be worked on, (I am currently working on about a half dozen tropes in various states of readiness)

[up][up] "[...] are not unreadable and still make scene."

Your first three points all have run-on sentences.

I don't have the time to babysit anyone on their grammar. Take a close look at the edit history for Double Dare 1986 to see what you did wrong, and copy your edits from the edit histories in the other pages, plus the other things you're working on, and take them to the "get help with English" thread.

Greetings

Apologies in advance for this post being long. I'll start with a summary so you can more easily skip reading the rest if you so prefer.

  1. It seems I have put too much of my time and energy into TV Tropes, ending up with you guys in the staff finding me obnoxious rather than appreciating my efforts. I apologize for taking up too much of your time, and for not being more fun.
  2. If I ever return to writing trope descriptions, I'll put focus on making them brief and keep the fluff to the analysis tab.
  3. Even if I never get back to that, I'd still like to make minor edits sometimes. Thus I'm here.

Moving on to the long version of the same message...

A month or so ago I requested a moderator decision in a thread that was a total headache. Nothing happened. Two weeks later someone asked what would happen, and I replied to him with restating my request for a decision from moderators. I didn't mean to be nagging you guys, but I can understand if you took it that way. My apologies. :-(

This time, moderator decisions were made. One moderator declared that the current suggestions wasn't good enough, and another moderator decided to give the discussion a fresh start by uninviting me from the thread. Very well. While it wasn't the decision I had hoped for, it did mean one less headache for me.

Since the uninvite locked me out from all of TRS, I considered posting here. Asking for having it lifted and in return I would promise to stay away from that particular thread. However, I was too weary of the whole thing. And I get the feeling that you are tired of me, so I just didn't want to bother you anymore.

For over two years I have been an active member here. TV Tropes has been one of my major hobbies. I have written a lot over those years, on all kinds of subjects. While I haven't always been successful, my goal has always been to produce content that is of good quality and enjoyable to read. With few exceptions, I have logged in every day. Some periods I have logged in over ten times per day. It was time for a break.

And so I have been gone for two weeks. Not reading TV Tropes, not even chatting about the site with my old World Of Warcraft guildmates. With one of them, TV Tropes has been one of our main mutual hobbies since we quit playing wow. But there are lots of other things for us to talk about. Feels good.

I have no intention of returning to spending the kind of time I used to. But I would like to edit a bit sometimes. As I returned here yesterday, I discovered that in my absence the ban from TRS had expanded into a full edit ban. :-/

A few days ago I saw an interesting movie that I'd like to start a works page for. And I got some YKTTW drafts I'd like to finish, particularly Manji Swastika and Big Brother Loves Watching. I'm also considering shorting down some trope descriptions I have already written, moving some stuff to the analysis page.

The one piece of critique I received with the uninvite was that the stuff I had written belonged in the analysis tab. It is obvious that I need to rethink my way of writing descriptions. Back when I started writing for TV Tropes, the analysis tab did not exist yet. At least not as far as I have been aware of. When I heard about the analysis tab, I thought it was a neat feature, but I haven't gotten around to automatically integrating it into my way of writing.

Perhaps most importantly, if I return to writing I'll try to focus less on the tropes themselves and more focus on presenting them in a way that will be fun for the readers.

Over and out.

@Westrim - You seem to have some issues with YKTTW. You launched The War to End All Wars full of Zero Context Examples, you launched this YKTTW with no examples, and you have some over-protective ownerships issues, as seen when you get overly defensive when issues are brought up with your draft or the trope is brought to the TRS.

All things considered, we didn't feel it was wise to continue to give you access to that tool.

@Tricia - You were suspended for adding examples to Radar. The Legend Of Korra in spite of a mod warning right below where you added them not to add those exact examples. We expect people to pay attention to the commented out warnings.

@DQZ - We're discussing it on the mod forum.

Waiting on a TRS slot? Finishing off one of these cleaning efforts will usually open one up.

[up][up][up]Willbyr how are those run on sentences, they are all short and about one topic. If you mean I did not put in a coma that is a punctuation error not a run on sentence. I have written college turn papers using the same sentence structure and I find it strange that you have higher standers then them. Also I spelled sense as scenes to prove a point, which is that the exact spelling douses not matter and you can still tell from context what I meant.

You did not answer any of my questions, please I just want to edit again. Instead you just insult me, and send me to a thread for people that can not speak English.

p.s. I will be out for most of the next two days spending time with family, so I might not respond for awhile.

Rano, if I may:

you said:

Willbyr how are those run on sentences, they are all short and about one topic.

This is a run-on sentence. While the general topic (the sentences) is all one, there are two distinct thoughts there: "How is it a run-on?" and "They are all short.". Also, Wilbyr should be set off by a comma.

If you mean I did not put in a coma that is a punctuation error not a run on sentence.

First, it's "comma", not "coma". Second, there should be a comma after the word "comma". Third, no one said that the only problem with your writing was run-ons. Spelling and punctuation errors were also specifically mentioned.

I have written college turn papers using the same sentence structure and I find it strange that you have higher standers then them.

The fact that your college teachers accept sloppy writing does not mean that we have to. Also, it's "term" papers, not "turn" papers; and "standards" not "standers".

Also I spelled sense as scenes to prove a point, which is that the exact spelling douses not matter and you can still tell from context what I meant.

We don't want the readers of the wiki to have to guess from the context what you meant. In case you were unaware, many of the people who edit and read the wiki have English as a second (or third, or fourth...) language. Making them try to decipher a sentence that contains erroneous words because you can't be arsed to write correctly in the first place is rude.

In short: Your editing privileges have been suspended because you leave a mess that someone else has to clean up, everywhere you go. We don't need or want that kind of help on the wiki. Saying that you need help with your English is not an insult, and the Get Help thread is not only for people who "can't speak English". It's for anyone who has problems writing English to the site's standards. That includes you.

Thank you Madrugada you have been much more helpful and I will work on the problems. However you seem to be confusing run-on with compact. As for the other problems mentioned I acknowledge that I have them and I understand ware he is coming from on them it is just the run-on sentences that were confusing me. Also what did I do that was considered nattery in my description?

I am not trying to upset anybody on this wiki I just want to help you make it better for everybody.

You're the one who said it wasn't a run-on because it was short. Run-on sentences aren't determined by the length of the sentence. They're determined by how many complete statements are contained in it. "I like coffee, I'm thirsty." is a run-on, despite being only 5 words long. There are two distinct and complete statements in it: "I like coffee." and "I'm thirsty." . They're related, but distinct.

Here, take a look at the section starting on page 12 of this link. It's a very clear explanation of what makes a run-on sentence, and how to fix them.

Merlin Syndrome: I am concerned by what appears to be a tendency to remove captions or pieces of descriptions without edit reasons. In your edit on Shoot the Shaggy Dog, you removed a piece of the description that has been there for very long, and has never been a problem. You also removed the caption on Furry Confusion and I see you've removed some quotes.

Now, while your removals may have been justified, the lack of edit reasons leaves behind quite a bit of confusion. Take a look at Edit Reasons And Why You Should Use Them. They're a very handy tool to make editing flow smoother.

[up][up]I also said they were on connected thoughts since some people do not relies what run-on actually means. Also while the five word sentence "I like coffee, I'm thirsty." is considered run-on the six word sentence "I like coffee, and I'm thirsty." is not. It is a compact sentence.

I have posted one of my entries in the thread that was suggested and I will see the results. How about I run all my entries by them before posting would that work for you

What worries me more is that he said my entries were natter and I take pride in writing detailed and on topic entries so I really want to know what about them was nattery so I can improve on it.

Read that link, please. Run-ons are two or more complete sentences smooshed into one. It's not about length. It's about structure.

Running all your proposed edits through tthe Get Help Thread is what you need to do if you want your editing privileges restored.

What Natter is, how to recognize it, and how to avoid it, is covered on the pages Conversation In The Main Page, Repair Dont Respond, Thread Mode, Justifying Edits, and Word Cruft. Give those a read-over too, please.

Like I said before it is not about length but one of my sentences was described as being to long so I asked what it was. However a sentence in not considered run on if there is a conjunction connecting the two thoughts then it is considered compact which is what I was arguing.

Also I do not see any how my entries fall into any of the natter categories. Unless you count things like describing the first episode of a show as literally day one, or that I established which show called Double Dare I was talking about by saying it was the classic kids show, as Word Cruft despite the fact they all had a purpose.

I am not trying to be difficult I just want to be precise so I do not end up banned again.

Apparently I've had my editing privileges suspended. I'm not aware of any specific reason this might be, but I thought that I had been making positive contributions to the community, and I had only seen a few of my past entries erased. In general I've tried not to be overly opinionated, but even with the few exceptions I've never gone after other users or insulted anyone. It's disappointing to hear that my contributions are no longer considered good enough for the site, and I hope you guys change your mind at some point.
