To-do list:

    Original post

Note: This thread was proposed by Adept.

This page was created in 2008 and is doing very poorly, with only 10 on-page examples and 63 wicks—including its entry on the TRS Queue and the relevant wick check. Ostensibly, the page is specifically about stereotypical portrayals of Roman Catholicism, although this definition seems redundant to Christianity is Catholic and Hollywood Nuns. The fact that the name is just a pun to Guns N' Roses probably doesn't help.

Results (wick check)

  • ZCE, partial context examples, & Potholes: 34/55 (61.8%)
  • Catholics/Catholicism/Nuns exist: 15/55 (27.3%)
  • Nun habits: 4/55 (7.3%)
  • Others: 2/55 (3.6%)

Analysis

As you can see, more than half of the examples are just potholes to the words "Catholic(s)", "Catholicism", "Nuns", "Rosary", and other Catholic-related elements. A quarter of the examples that does provide context basically boils down to characters being Catholics, or contain references to the Catholic church and their practices. There are a few that specifically focus on the "Nuns wear penguin habits" stereotype, which is probably covered by Hollywood Nuns, and two unclear examples.

Proposal:

Easy cut.

Wick check:

ZCE, partial context examples, & Potholes
  1. Black Magic: Syncretic religions like voodoo and the Aztec-Catholic blend Anahuac have adherents that can do unseemly things with a death motif, but the practitioners aren't necessarily bad people, just… very different. Pothole on the word Catholic.
  2. The Song of Bernadette: Yes, but also justified.
  3. Church of Saint Genericus: A statue of the Virgin Mary is seen in the church, as are nuns, suggesting a Catholic church.
  4. Genshin Impact: Knights of Favonius: Roses are a symbol of the Virgin Mary in Christianity, in particular the Roman Catholic Church, hence rosaries, and Rosaria is a nun with a rose motif.
  5. Christianity is Catholic Nuns N' Rosaries is mentioned in the "see also" part of the description without explaining how they are distinct.
  6. Xenogears: ...all those crosses, habit-wearing nuns, cassock-wearing priests, and hierarchical/practical similarities to the world's largest Christian church are misplaced, sometimes severely.
  7. Christianity: "Roman Catholicism" as it's commonly known in the West (you know, Latin, priestly celibacy, Mass, unleavened bread, old ladies wearing headcovers praying the Rosary in front of a statue of Mary) is actually more properly called the Latin Rite of the Catholic Church.
  8. Blue Archive: Their archenemy is Trinity, a religious institution practicing religion, crosses and the like, and Hieronymus is an Angelic Abomination fought in a church.
  9. Sister Claire: Trope is simply listed on the page with no context at all.
  10. Hollywood Nuns: Nuns N' Rosaries is mentioned in the "see also" part of the description without explaining how they are distinct.
  11. Guilt Complex: "Catholic Guilt" is a stereotypical personality trait of practicing Catholics and former Catholics. Pothole on the word Catholic.
  12. Nature Adores a Virgin: Taking the Veil (especially in works written by and for Catholics)
  13. Nun Too Holy: The main screen sums it up as 'Nun with guns". Pothole on the word Nuns
  14. Wedding Ring Defense: Alice is a nun, and since she is bound to vows of celibacy, wears a ring to avoid unwanted attention.
  15. The Borgias: Ursula feels guilty.
  16. Nuns Are Mikos: So Christianity, particularly the Roman Catholic type, tends to get used as an exotic religion, especially if you can mix in mythology and folklore. Pothole on the word Catholic.
  17. Retcon: In the Catholic Church, a couple whose marriage is broken beyond repair may request an annulment. Pothole on the word Catholic. Although I'm not sure this example should be here at all.'
  18. Wedding Ring Defense: Technically, the rings worn nuns and some other people who have taken vows of celibacy, are not this trope, as the nuns are symbolically married to Christ.
  19. The Church: Despite ostensibly worshiping a Crystal Dragon Jesus, not only is the Church of Fiction always Catholic Christian, but it's also Roman Catholic.
  20. Culturally Religious Nuns N' Rosaries is mentioned in the "see also" part of the description without explaining how they are distinct.
  21. AsTheGoodBookSays.Film: The sniper prays as he takes aim at a German gun emplacement. The shot then cuts to another soldier on the beach praying a rosary in Latin.
  22. Virgin in a White Dress: When you were counting on your Rosary Pothole on an excerpt of a song lyrics that contain the word "rosary".
  23. 9 Chickweed Lane Trope is simply listed on the page with no context at all.
  24. DuelingWorks.Anime And Manga: Capsule Pitch Description: Catholic Phantom Thief Magical Girl. Pothole on the word Catholic
  25. EldritchAbomination.Mythology And Religion: Nu was the Primordial Egyptian deity of the watery abyss and was usually male, but could be the female Naunet or the male Nun (not to be confused with Nuns N Rosaries Nuns)
  26. Bad Sister: Set at a Catholic school run by nuns, so naturally Nuns N Rosaries abound.
  27. Highlander: No Sense of Humor: Kurgan accuses nuns of having this when they are appalled by him waggling his tongue at them. Pothole on the word nuns.
  28. Ladder 49: Jack gets chastised on his first day at work for being late by a seemingly-Drunk Captain Mike Kennedy, who then stands up to show that he is not wearing pants, and is then taken to a mock confessional set up by the other firefighters with Lenny Richter as the "priest".
  29. Novitiate: Used as a major plot point. The Roses wear a very traditional "penguin" habit and Mother wants to keep them in it long past the time that Vatican II has said they can dispense with it.
  30. Only You: Faith and Kate start their journey in Venice on a gondola, followed by a roadtrip through sunny Tuscan countryside with groves of olive trees (and some friendly Nuns who fix their hire car when it breaks down).
  31. Superstar (1999) Trope is simply listed on the page with no context at all.
  32. Elevator School: There is a school building across the street from the junior high school, but it's a Catholic school or some other type of private school, not affiliated in any way with the public school.
  33. Oops! I Forgot I Was Married: They got married in the Catholic Church, in order to please their very traditional families.
  34. Taking the Veil: A character (Always Female) becomes a nun.

    Catholics/Catholicism/Nuns exist
  1. Dragon Quest: The church elements strongly resemble the Catholic church.
  2. American Girls Collection - Historical Characters: Both girls are Catholic, as is basically everyone in the city—New Orleans, having been settled by the French and Spanish, was more Catholic than the Protistant-dominant east coast.
  3. ER S1E10 "Blizzard": A nun steps into the trauma room where Ramos died, and is permitted to give him the Anointing of the Sick.
  4. The Painted Veil: The French order running the orphanage in the village.
  5. Chalet School: Several prominent characters, such as the Maynards (after Joey converts in order to marry Jack), Frieda, Marie and Miss Wilson, are Catholics, and Luigia di Ferrara, the Robin and Margot all become nuns. Jack's rosary is what enables Fiona to discover that he is alive in Highland Twins. Truth in Television as the Tyrol was a very Catholic area at the time of writing. Characters are Catholics
  6. Jommeke: A group of nuns ("The Begijntjes") are good friends of Jommeke.
  7. UNA Frontiers: Cecille is a devout Catholic who walks the walk.
  8. Trying Human: Phillis is shown to be of distinctly Catholic belief; she grasps for the rosary in her pocket when she's afraid, and she prays a "Hail Mary" in the base's chapel in fluent Latin.
  9. Derry Girls: All the main characters are Catholic and there are plenty of jokes based on various aspects of Catholicism.
  10. Hellsing: Yumie. What a Japanese katana-wielding Catholic nun is doing in the mix is anyone's guess. Character is a nun.
  11. A Yellow Raft in Blue Water: Ida's sister Pauline owns a colorful beaded rosary and is extremely proud of it. However, when Clara comments that the beads of the rosary are most likely scrap beads left over from other regular rosaries, Pauline grows upset and throws the rosary away.
  12. Tropico: A stereotypical Roman Catholic nun.
  13. Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge: Almost every song on the record has a relation to the Catholic Church in the lyrics.
  14. My Chemical Romance: Frank, Ray, Mikey and Gerard were all raised Catholic and it shows. Apparently, many of the band's song titles and lyrics contain references to Catholicism.
  15. Arkham Horror: One of her starting items is a Cross. A cross/rosary exist?

    Nuns wear penguin habits
  1. The Legend of Mother Sarah: Averted. While Satoko eventually became a nun, she doesn't wear the usual Catholic garb.
  2. Kitty Norville: Cormac expects Sister Hilda to have the typical black-and-white habit and veil/headdress "like in the movies" and is bemused that she doesn't. Also trope-slashed with Hollywood Nuns
  3. Soul Tide Litoris: Based on her group's background and clothing, this is very much what Carola's religion is like. Speculating on a character's religion based on outfit.
  4. Brides of Christ: Played straight for a very good reason until the third episode when the nuns shed their penguin outfits after the Vatican II council. Though not all of them are willing.

    Other uses
  1. Blue Archive Trinity General School: As shown with the Sisterhood and Vol. 3, Trinity is a religious school that appears to be based on real-life Roman Catholicism. Fantasy religion based on Catholicism.
  2. Dirty Laundry: An Alternate 1980s: Since the trope's name is based off of a band that doesn't exist ITTL, it's safe to guess that the name is different ITTL. Unclear what this is about. An in-universe trope name for a TV-tropes-like site?

Paging ~Adept to the thread.

I'm in favor of cutting since the lack of examples of stereotypical depictions of Catholicism (despite that supposedly being the definition here) means such a trope would have to be done from scratch through TLP (though Artistic License – Religion probably already covers it anyway), and since 1,512 inbounds since 2012 for a page made in 2008 is pretty bad.

As it's a Roman The Same, but More Specific to Christianity is Catholic, just merge into it, and move examples that fit Hollywood Nuns there.

In addition to tropes that were already mentioned, I'm pretty sure the fictional Catholicism-like religion at the beginning of the last folder would be covered by Crystal Dragon Jesus or Fantasy Counterpart Religion (the former being a subtrope to the latter).

Let's go ahead and merge with Christianity is Catholic.

We can just cut the original page afterward due to a lack of inbounds.
