Memetic X Cleanup

Memes.RWBY has an absolutely insane number of pages and examples of memes, which probably need a project to investigate for misuse if the following are anything to go by.

On that page, under the folder "Justice League X RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen", there are eleven entries. I have questions about six of them (see the bold text below):

• Sexualized Yang ^Explanation Many fans were shocked when shown Yang in Maya animation style, confused as to why her chest seemed bigger. Some teased that the animators might have been a tad horny, others pointed out Yang was always like that in her old look. This just seems to be complaining. I can't find any actual memes, but I can find complaints and discussions. Conclusion: Remove.
• "This is really freaking me out"^Explanation At one point, Oscar suddenly starts speaking with Ozpin's voice before glitching out and appearing as Ozpin, prompting Ruby muttering to Yang the quote. Some have noted it would be a perfect reaction meme "Some have noted" is already weasel words for "some people are talking about it, but it's not actually a meme", and that seems to be what's going on here. People have discussed it, but haven't memed it. Conclusion: Remove.
• Can we keep Jessica? ^Explanation A common comment is about how well Jessica fits in with the cast of RWBY, leading to many wanting her to be a Canon Immigrant, especially seeing as she has had no real presence with the cancellations of Justice League Odyssey and DC Super Hero Girls 2019 This is a very common conversation point, and many people think she's one of the best things about that film. However, discussions and memes aren't the same thing. So, does this count? Conclusion: Don't know.
• Mommy? ^Explanation The first image we saw of Part 2 was a look at the now age-appropriate Wonder Woman and Vixen, along with Black Canary. Yang also comes with a Fanservice Pack, specifically one that finally gives her visible muscles, something many fans have been asking for. Seeing them in the RWBY art style instantly led to fans gushing about their designs. I can't find anything meme-related about this. Most discussions are about disliking Wonder Woman or Black Canary's appearances. Yang being depicted (and gushed over) with muscles has been a fanart thing for years — but is gushing over artwork a meme? Conclusion: Don't know.
• #GaveYangAbs. ^Explanation Many fans have been clamoring for Yang to have visible muscles with the hashtag, "giveYangabs," since she's repeatedly had her Super-Strength emphasized. The teaser for Part 2 shows finally shows her with visible biceps. I can't find anything to back this one up. The hashtag doesn't seem to exist on any social media I've searched (Twitter, Reddit, Tumblr, Discord, general Google searches). The hashtag "#GiveYangAbs" does exist, but only in connection to advertising fanart of Yang (wit or without abs, so I'm wondering if my search is just finding "Yang" references as it's rarely "abs" related) (on Reddit) and there are 21 uses of the hashtag on Twitter by 16 people across 7 years, and most in relation to a post that's been deleted, or again when advertising fanart. I don't think this is a meme. Conclusion: Remove.
• Yang's Lesbian Beam ^Explanation Yang's Technicolor Fire abilities in Part 2 have many pointing out that the palette they chose is remarkably similar to the colors on the Lesbian Pride Flag, starting jokes that Yang was able to weaponize her own sexuality following Volume 9 and her Relationship Upgrade with Blake. I can't find reference to this anywhere I've looked, except for one single question asked by one single person on one single Discord server that does not match what this entry is saying. The entry may be referencing people commenting about the colours, but there doesn't seem to be any memes (and I can't really find much conversation right now either). Conclusion: Remove.

I do think we document reactions that have died down, so long as it's true that people did feel that way before.

The link to Subverted Trope in the example's text seems to be misusing the term "subverted". Personally, I'd just have reworded it to something like "She did manage to shake off that reputation when..."

Yeah, there's no such thing as a "subverted" YMMV trope or audience reaction. If the reaction happened, it happened, even if it changes over time. In this case, it's someone misusing the term.

Are you planning on doing the rest of the Memes/RWBY page? I noticed that those pages could use some cleanup since they feel kind of bloated with a lot of entries that aren't memes, or entries that aren't RWBY specific (for example, Best Girl is listed as a meme even though that phrase has existed long before RWBY and is a general anime/fandom meme)

Honestly, I think that's too overwhelming for one person to do. It certainly does need looking at, given that there multiple pages that — as you say — seem to have dubious-looking entries. I'd appreciate feedback on the ones I did bring here, but I don't know what to suggest regarding the pages as a whole.

To know if a character that does not appear directly, can be considered a Memetic Badass.

From Fan-film: Fallout Lanius

• Memetic Badass: Ironically, many viewers apply this trope with a character who does not appear in the film, "The Mailman", or "The Angry Mailman" (Referring to the playable character from Fallout New Vegas), pointing out that someone as dangerous and feared as Lanius will eventually be defeated by a Courier.

Basically, in the video that shows this fan-film, many people mention the "Mailman" as a kind of unstoppable being that can beat the villain protagonist Lanius, even though the "Mailman" does not appear in the fan-film.

• "Now, this might strike some viewers as harsh, but I believe everyone involved in this story should die."

it's a norm macdonald quote and the screencap◊ is often used in situations where everyone involved is a terrible person. i can add the extra context to the actual entry

A curious entry on Memes.Joker 2019:

• "YOU GET WHAT YOU FUCKIN' DESERVE!" ^Explanation  Joker's Pre-Mortem One-Liner before shooting Murray Franklin that becomes a rally cry of the rioters; one of them shouting it before he kills the Waynes. This can be expanded with the preceding lines before: "What do you get, when you cross an A with a B that C and D!? I'll tell you what you get! You get an E!! (with a Precision F-Strike)"
  • "YOU GET WHAT YOU FRAGGIN' DESERVE!" ^Explanation  Lobo fans like to replace the Precision F-Strike with one of Lobo's common words.

Is the subbullet widespread enough to be a meme? Has it been used at all? Because I've never seen that sentence used on the internet. Furthermore, is Lobo really popular enough to have spawned this meme?

I have seen the first iteration in some crude image macros so I think it can be kept, NEVER seen a Lobo one, let alone enough to be documented here, so that can go.

This is on YMMV.Bloons Tower Defense's Memetic Loser:

• Australians as a whole also fall under this, as players occasionally joke about how the Australian flag costs 60% more than other countries flags in the Trophy Store for seemingly no apparent reason.^Explanation While the exact reason has never been specified, it is widely believed this is because of a running gag that Australia and New Zealand (Ninja Kiwi's origin country) are national rivals of each other.

Yeah it reads as that to me too. Plus, Memetic Loser doesn't seem to allow Real Life examples from what I can pick up and I feel it is too general as well.

That's more of a Take That! on developer's part if it wasn't limited to works specifically.

If nobody objects, I'll cut the example then.

From Memes.Batman:

• Barbara is Futaba Sakura. ^Explanation Barbara has a lot of similarities to Futaba Sakura from Persona 5. Both of them are redhead hacker vigilantes who have dead moms, who share the codename “Oracle” and (if the Persona 5 player chooses to have the protagonist get in a romantic relationship with Futaba) who have a black-haired love interest who also happens to be a Chick Magnet, so it’s pretty common for Persona 5 fans to joke about Barbara being Futaba. Heck, some people have even made fanart of Futaba dressing up as Batgirl. And some Joker/Futaba shippers take it a step even further by making Futaba dress up as Batgirl and by having Joker dress up like Nightwing, which is even more hilarious when you consider that as stated above, Joker and Nightwing both share a status as Chick Magnets. Also, some of these people have a really dark sense of humour and think that comparing Futaba to Batgirl and then shipping her with someone named Joker is downright morbidly hilarious when you consider what the OTHER Joker did to Barbara many years ago.

Maybe because the entry states Persona 5 fans have joked Barbara and Futaba are the same. However, I'm not familiar with the community so I don't know for sure if that's true or not.

i see Splatoon fans regularly crack the same joke about the orange Inkling girl, so if the Barbara/Futaba comparisons are widespread enough it may count

Memes.Attack On Titan probably doesn't need all those edits of the opening theme, we get it the first time.

So the VTubers cleanup thread said that they needed this thread's input in regards to these entries added to Memes.Nijisanji:

• Negligible^Explanation Following the termination of Selen Tatsuki, one of the biggest Nijisanji EN Livers, ANYCOLOR Inc. followed up with a single-page document with two lines reiterating the termination and declaring that "the impact of this decision on [their] financial results would be negligible." This would be perceived as an inept attempt at damage control; investors didn't believe a word of it, and this statement would become a point of mockery in the ensuing fallout.
• ANYCOLOR and they chose black^Explanation A reoccurring quote (based on a Japanese term "black company" used to describe companies that foster a explotative and sweatshop-like employee culture) used by detractors of ANYCOLOR whenever said company's management affect the Livers negatively. It has seen rampent use throughout the latter half of 2023 and especially in early 2024 due to a series of graduations and controversies that Nijisanji (particularly the EN side) has faced.

Any thoughts?

The "Negligible" meme doesn't explain how the meme is used. The second one looks like it might be valid.

The problem is that both of these memes relate to real-life controversies in regard to the company.
