[up] "A page being internally broken and loaded with misuse is still a problem"

It is a problem, but not one that requires TRS. Just sayin'

If it needs splitting between the misuse and correct use it is a TRS problem, the misuse is a trope it is just not this trope.

[up][up]

The problem is so much misuse of a spefitic type (any ridiculous weapon that's actually usefull) it needs either re-defined or split.

"any ridiculous weapon that's actually useful"

That'd be either Nerf Arm or Happy Fun Ball or This Banana is Armed depending on the case. It's not so much "splitting" as "moving to the proper trope".

Bump.

One problem, as noted, is that the page image depicting the misuse example.

Yup, but the thread will be locked until the issue in this thread is resolved.

So far, it seem that everyone on this thread agree that examples about "funny-looking item that actually work fine" have to be moved. But we seem to disagree if we need a new trope or not.

[up] This very trope is when "this normally useless item can be lethal in certain circumstances", right?

[up] That definition belongs to Not Completely Useless, as pointed out by post 11. The trope page for Lethal Joke Item makes a distinction between both tropes.

"If the "lethal" effect can be employed in most situations, even if it needs to be set up, it's a Lethal Joke Item."

I think this difference (especially relative to Not Completely Useless and Happy Fun Ball) is best put in action rather than in words, right? Guess that's why it's hard for me to understand. I understand the trope better as "Joke Item becomes lethal".

Of course, the examples of the page hardly illustrates it, as somebody up above noted. And... nobody has done a proper wick check yet.

Alright. I'm about to comment out all "funny-looking item that's actually work fine" examples from the page. Someone else can move them when we get a new trope, if we ever get one.

Any objection?

I'm pretty sure that "new trope" already exists as Nerf Arm, which I think has been established in the thread previously.

Just move the misused examples to that. I'm pretty sure that's a free action.

Well, I'll move any obvious misue to Nerf Arm.

Too bad, several entries are also ZCE. So I can't tell if it's miuse or just a very poorly writen examples.

EDIT: Geez, it's much worse than I thought. I don't get pass first folder yet, and already fine examples of Magikarp Power and Fighting Clown (yup, character, they simply use funny object)

BTW, Nerf Arm is exclusive to weapon, right? So few entries will be simply removed.

Here's two blatant misuse I've removed, in their original format.

  • Mario Kart Wii's Quacker is a plastic duck on wheels. It is very possible to beat the opposition using the Quacker in the 150cc and Mirror divisions.

(character with funny vehicle in a Racing Game)

  • In Melty Blood: twin maids Hisui and Kohaku were powered up by the Tatari influence, and both fight using items tied to their chores at the Tohno Mansion.
    • Hisui uses items such as: A bucket of water, a watering can, a duster, explosive bentos (with plum sandwiches no less), several vases and books which she throws as projectiles, cooking utensils such as a ladle, a frying pan, a wok, a serving tray, a chair... even a table!.
    • Kohaku uses her broom in battle, which has a hidden sword which she can quickly draw, attack and resheath again, as well as molotov cocktails, and several plants: a pine that works as a diagonal projectile, a boxing cactus... even a carnivorous plant named Johnny which spits fire!

(there's also a third two bullets natter entry too, but the point is that the it descript characters using funny objects)

[up] From the impression I'm getting, Lethal Joke Item is something you equip while Nerf Arm isn't necessarily so... although the examples of Nerf Arm are about toy/training weapons of stuff you use like you would a real weapon.

Melty Blood example is mostly Improbable Weapon User, although I'm iffy for the "sword in a broom" part. It's a real weapon concealed in an improbable one. Dunno what to call it.

Yeah I really dont see the two being the same and I really wish we had made a crowner before you started moving things...

Nerf Arm is more using practice weapons and such like actual nerf bats, brooms, wooden swords, paintball guns and such as real weapons.

At least we're clear on what Lethal Joke Item is: an otherwise Joke Item (weak item meant as a joke) that is strong on certain parts/ways, not a powerful item that only looks jokey (like Fighting Clown might be).

But then, what would be the trope for the latter? Now I kinda doubt Nerf Arm is that trope.

Well, at least the Lethal Joke Item page should be (mostly) clean of misuse now. We can move stuff from Nerf Arm again.

I guess that funny mundane object used as weapon is within scope of Nerf Arm but not funny/absurd version of actual weapon. However, I notice several examples there (before I start moving examples) are about the latter (notable the nail bat from FF7 - it's indeed funny when compare to BFS, but no doubt that it's dangerous). Maybe it need its own TRS thread.

I think, rather than Nerf Arm, misuses (where a funny looling weapon is powerful) should be in Happy Fun Ball. That trope even mentions Lethal Joke Item as "the videogame version of this" (it's wrong, though).
