Joking aside, that movie was fucking intense. It was, like, Nature Is Not Nice, The Movie. Peter Jackson needed to resurrect fossil creatures or imagine them from whole cloth to make Skull Island as terrifying at it was in King Kong. This movie achieves an even more terrifying effect with the freaking canadian wilderness. The word that comes to mind is mercilessly beautiful.

The funny thing is that, despite being a borderline Shoot the Shaggy Dog story and an absolute Tragedy, and despite the sheer abuse heaped on the protagonist breaking Willing Suspension of Disbelief once or twice

I mean, like, what is he, Wile E Coyote? The Bride has nothing on this guy! He's biologically impossible!

one still finds oneself hanging on to the story, caring about the characters, following everything with bated breath until the credits roll.

All I'm saying is, this is not the kind of movie you want to be watching in the Nordic winter. Not when everything about you is covered in snow and the cold numbs your face for hours and the sun is rare and sharp as a knife.

Apparently very little was embellished, aside from Glass in real life having help with fighting off the bear. Still not an easy task, though.

That guy has an Ironic Name. He should be called "Steel" or "Jade" or something.

Maybe he's a Glass Cannon...

Anyway, as I've said somewhere else, this movie reminded me of certain Werner Herzog movies (natural Scenery Porn, human cruelty, vicious animals, determination at all costs, and so forth).

A friend of mine said it also had elements of The Wild Bunch (the violence), The Deer Hunter ('impetuous audacity', as he put it). Still, as he also said, InĂ£rritu managed to make the movie his own thing, and went beyond these influences.

I probably could add more, but I'm going to sleep in a while.

Very Wile E. Coyote at points. I laughed when Leo took that dive off the cliff and fell through a tree.

Yup. And the Inevitable Waterfall, don't forget about that one.

Was I the only one kind of wishing for subtitles for a lot of that movie? Especially the opening scene? Tom Hardy seemed to be talking through a severe head cold at points.

Well, movies here tend to have subs (unless they're movies aimed at an younger audience and/or animation movies, in which case they tend to have dubs).

That being said, considering how the climate was in those places where they shot, it's no wonder it became difficult for him (and for Leo, at some points during the movie where he speaks) to deliver the lines clearly.

And there's also the fact that the audio recording (and subsequent mixing) done for this movie wasn't the best, since they had a short amount of time to shoot everyday, so, that job was a bit affected in post-production.

"Here" being Portugal, I take it? Well in the United States they don't have subs unless it was a foreign film.

The Revenant was particularly unintelligible during the talky scenes after the opening Indian attack and before Leo gets mauled. If recording on set was a problem, they should have looped in dialogue in post-production.

Yes.

I think the talky scenes after the first thing and before that other thing were actually fairly decent. I had more trouble with understanding the stuff said during the scene involving Glass's son being killed by Fitzgerald and the latter trying to kill Glass. Not to mention the stuff said by the French in broad daylight.

As for the looping technique, the reason it probably wasn't made was because InĂ£rritu wanted to pursue an audiovisual aesthetic that could be as naturalistic and/or realistic as possible. Which means it has its virtues, but also its flaws (including the flaw you pointed out) within the movie itself.

Overall I enjoyed the movie, I did. Doesn't deserve to win Best Picture, but it was a reasonable way to spend $12 and it sure did look pretty, and we should all be grateful when an original story of any kind makes money in Hollywood. But there was a real Looney Tunes vibe to a lot of it. Leo is half-eaten! Leo falls off a cliff! Leo climbs out of his own grave!

That bear attack looked more like he was getting raped at some points."Abuse" is the only word for it.

The rate at which Glass heals is also almost Looney Tunes-esque.

And yeah, the movie was mercilessly gorgeous, when it wasn't mercilessly gory.
