Hrm... thinking in FFV terms, a Dragoon going for Blue Magic as a secondary skill probably wouldn't be all that bad a unit, owing to Dragoon having a pretty decent equipment pool...

@EVA Unit 01: I wanted to distance Max's fighting style from his father's. In-universe, Max became Kain's apprentice after seeing Max's skill with a spear and Dragoon abilities. The reason why Goofy couldn't train him is because he's on the front lines with Sora. That and Max is trying to make sure that he's not known as just 'the captain of the guard's son'.

@Rikalous: They're only going to cast spells up to the '-ga' spell family. They'll have to work extra hard if they want the '-ja' spell family and they can forget spells like Holy, Flare, Meteor and Ultima.

All of the canon characters (This also includes the Final Fantasy characters as they're more prominent.) can master a whole bunch spells from a whole bunch different schools of magic and have so many combat tropes in general that I have little to no problem giving OC's broken (read: powerful) combinations so they can try to keep up. In fact, since I'm giving Sora, the guy who is capable of slicing buildings, one of most broken abilities (Dualcast) in Final Fantasy history, I'm going make sure that my Mooks are smart and powerful.

Makes sense. Even most of the Orgy, the characters most clearly identifiable with individual classes, have a combination of magic and hitting-you-to-death.

So if he's Kain's apprentice and just learning Blue Magic from a book, am I correct in thinking that he'll end up more of a Dragoon with some Blue Magic than a Blue Mage who's really good with a spear?

Unless he meets an actual practitioner of Blue Magic, he's going to be a better Dragoon then a Blue Mage. There's only so much you can do with just a book.

Quick question, would Mystic Knights be able to learn their craft faster if they studied a school of magic beforehand?

Oh and here's a list combinations that are final:

Fala (the self insert): Warrior/Monk (People in-universe also see him as a Gadgeteer but that's just him following the blueprints and the instructions of an AI in his head to the letter (who is a Sadist Teacher).

Shin (the love interest): Ninja/Time Mage (My Summoners are different then yours. They're not really casting spells, it's more like praying to a deity for protection.)

Sophie (the female oc and sister figure): Black Mage/Mystic Knight.

Nick (the male oc and professional hot-blooded idiot hero): White Magic/Mystic Knight (He's way more physical then most White Mages.)

The Bard (One of the Keyblade using OC's. Name undecided.) Bard/White Mage.

The Dark Knight (One of the Keyblade using OC's. Name undecided) Dark Knight/Black Mage.

In terms of story, I think Black Mage/Mystic Knight would be slightly redundant, as the Mystic Knight's main shtick is Black Magic. The main different being that instead of casting it at the foe directly, they cast it on their sword so that their melee attacks have the same effect as the spell.

Unless training for said class also includes swordsmanship classes and the knowledge to bind complex magic like Flare and Ultima. I see your point though.

Man, that feeling when you're close to finishing a fic. As of the last update, The Year Between is about 8 - 10 chapters from completion, unless I find I need to stretch things out for pacing purposes.

This is gonna make it my longest fic yet at over 300k words. +_+ I'm curious, though. How often do you think I should update? Until I get a job, I could probably swing weekly, maybe even biweekly updates. If I do so, I can have the fic finished by Christmas/New Years, but I also don't wanna be too fast that I overwhelm readers, since my chapters can be anywhere from 5k - 8k words.

I'm also trying to sort out my timeskips. To clarify, The Year Between is a story that takes place over the course of a year. As of the latest chapter, we're ten months into the plot, with the goal being to end on the year mark. How do you guys usually handle the passage of time in your stories? I was thinking I could do the current mini-arc with Riku and Sora at ten months, then when I move back to Xion, bump it another month but use flashbacks where necessary to show what's been going on since her last appearance chronologically. Then, for the last segment of the fic, bump it to twelve months.

I have the events outlined for everything up until the climax. It's just deciding how to space them and transition over month-long time jumps that's tricky. Past time jumps in the fic have occurred after larger arcs (10 - 18 chapters). Here, I'm gonna have to speed things up, as I'm gearing up towards the end.

Currently working on the grand image of the villainous "Dark Alliance" all coming together at one point, and listening to Wolfang basically declaring his intentions, and beginning to plan out how he intends to collapse the order that had led to peace for nearly 50 years.

The very start of his plan calls for Destiny Islands to be razed.

I have never known it.

Depends on how fast you write.

I usually am not very strict with it, the exception being Brutality. Because it's a Days fic and the game pretty much advances one day at a time.

I admit, I am a little nervous about my most recent update. One of the strongest themes in my fanfic is that things have changed a lot, and one of the strongest signs of this is the Deep Jungle World, at first untamed jungle when an off-worlder first stumbled in.

Well, to spoil a little, the world's present day state can best be described as a world divided in two, between the old world, and a new "Mega-City", the two of them separated by something called the Warden Wall, a powerful barrier.

I do admit I am nervous about Nostalgia Goggle Clad fans determining my changes as having made it "RUINED FOREVER!"

Has the Mega-City been built with imported tech? Because that doesn't sound like something you'd have at a Victorian tech level.

Essentially, yes. It was built using technology brought in by anyone from Traders, immigrants from Radiant Garden among others. The creation of such places in "strategic worlds", as President Maynes is fond of saying, is one of the things you'll have to decide on - namely, whether its overall effect is positive or negative

@Nick: Son, when your trying to add more Final Fantasy elements, trying to create/give explanations on how pretty boy bishonen with no muscle mass at all can slice buildings in half, why magic is in seperate schools of magic for non-Keyblade users, why classes are now a thing, explaining why the main characters (Not the canon characters.) get non-Disney/Square worlds and other such things those are the least of your worries.

...so, I got hit with yet another plotbunny. :| Now I'm pondering an AU where Ven wakes up at the moment Sora releases Kairi's heart and how much that would change things.

A few things I've managed to hash out are as follow.

- Ven wakes up in Castle Oblivion, meets Naminé and tries to rescue her, is found by the Organization and forced to flee. Ollies over to Mysterious Tower to give Yen Sid quite a shock.

- Roxas still looks the way he did in canon as a side effect of Sora's connection with Ven. The two will eventually meet and confusion will ensue. I'm not sure if they'd start on the best of terms, but Ven'll at least be friendly.

- Still trying to figure out what goes down with Sora at the moment. I'm torn between him still going to C.O. and Co M generally still happening, but when Xion starts sponging his memories, Naminé is able to take the time neede to return those memories while keeping Xion alive. She said it was possible in Days but time was an issue. With Ven around, this may no longer be the case, though I doubt Di Z and/or Riku would be thrilled by having to wait.

- Thinking that Ven may end up joining forces with Riku and a very ecstatic King Mickey. It's a dynamic I think would be fun to explore.

- A friend suggested that Vanitas should resurface and proceed to crash the Organization's castle. I've worked out that he'd basically end up butting heads with Saïx quite a bit, generally hassling Roxas and Xion, and slaughtering Heartless for thrills rather than for any heroic reason. Unversed may very well be a thing.

These are just rough ideas, but I think it'd be fun to plan out. I'm a sucker for those what-if A Us.

Aw, no worries! I know KHA is rather large. It's still my primary project, but I'll definitely toy around with the Ventus AU a little more. I don't really wanna start writing it until I at least work up a preliminary outline. There are still a lot of things I gotta wrap my head around, for one, like how this would change the Organization's plans and their outcome, how much of KH 2 would be affected... The list goes on, really!

Since Kingdom Hearts de-ages some of the characters from the PS 1 era, would it be weird if I aged up a few characters from Final Fantasy classic (I-VI)? Like Old!Warrior of Light (think Star Wars Episode IV!Obi-Wan) or Yang.

Also, would it be weird if I wrote the main characters (the main four" as not really all on into the "magic makes healing and death dirt cheep.) on the fact in fact it dies,

Aging up the classic FF characters seems perfectly plausible to me. People age, and it'd honestly be weirder if everyone everywhere was having all their adventures like last year.

I can't parse the second paragraph, though.

I think someone actually did something like that. Or started to. I don't remember. It's been forever and a half ago.

@HF: Setzer had a minor role in KHII, though, and he was his standard age. Not saying you can't still roll with it, but just an observation.

... Then again, Selphie became a schoolgirl, Seifer, Raijin and Fuujin became a psuedo-highschool delinquents, and yet Squall is still more-or-less his canon age, so cast adaptation consistency isn't really a thing...

Random thought: "Just Another Standard High School AU"

Pretty much what it sounds like. It starts out as a bog-standard High School AU, but with most of the characters' original personalities intact (aside from being Hotter and Sexier). Sora, Riku, and Roxas are star athletes, Namine is a socially awkward artist, Kairi is something like a Student Council President (although generally still as awesome as she is in canon), and some of Organization XIII are Sadist Teachers.

After a few chapters of setup, Kairi's long-lost relative Xion transfers in. A complete and total neurotic mess, her arrival marks the beginning of abnormal and bizarre phenomena; beginning with The Reveal that Roxas is actually a clone of Sora as is Xion, and ultimately culminating in the Heartless rampaging through town and the world falling into Darkness.

Next scene, we find the assorted cast members having been shunted off to assorted other Worlds, and they embark on a quest to reunite and fix things.

Closing line: "What, did you really think this was going to be just another standard Highschool AU?"

And yes, I do know that Audience-Alienating Premise is a thing. Hell, Samurai Flamenco was, in part, what gave me this idea.

Not a bad idea, but I feel like it needs something more.

Might I suggest making it the actual characters, but with fake memories? That might give it an extra mystery.
