You know those characters whose source of brooding results from losing their loved ones?

It's funny how those "traumatized" characters never suffer from any mental pains outside occasional nightmares.

I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel.

Yep, the occasional nightmare as opposed to recurring and continuous night terrors, crippling metal trauma, a whole slew of fears, personality disorders and anxieties ETC.

But hey, as long as they SOUND traumatised, why bother going any further?

Hey guys, I have an idea for an OC story; rather than the team of students going to Beacon standard, it's going to focus on eight 'heroes' from the war who've had their lifespans extended by means I won't yet disclose. The characters are:

Georgina Pendragon- Saint George And The Dragon / King Arthur

Prima Timeas- Bogeyman / Satanic Archetype

John Davids- Davy Jones / Kraken and Leviathan

Avias Vogel- Ziz/The Roc

Robert Jersey- Robin Hood

The rest I haven't thought of yet. Criticism and advice is more than welcome.

I can't give a great deal of feedback (not enough information) but the ideas seem pretty solid.

The only thing I wonder is that there doesn't seem to be a great deal of overall 'themeing' to them? There's no official rule or anything, but most of the teams so far seem to have had some sort of theme going on.

Like, some of them seem to be based on folk heroes and some of them are based on mythical creatures, but other than that they seem a bit haphazard, maybe? They also don't seem to fit the 1st and 2nd rules of naming characters for RWBY?

Rules are here: [1] from Monty's Twitter, here

Fair enough, but the colour naming thing felt a bit to restrictive as I couldn't think of a name I could be sure hadn't already been used. Besides, the second one doesn't really apply since they're not on a team per say.

By the way, just to clarify, the villainous characters are mythological creatures/characters and the heroic ones are folk heroes. Also, I only just noticed that the heroes tend to have more 'normal' sounding names whereas the 'villains' have names that wouldn't sound out of place in Latin.

Alright, I've thought of the other three members of the 'heroes'. They are:

Queen Midisia- Gender Flip version of King Midas

Joanna Grapevine- Gender Flip version of Johnny Appleseed

Orochi Pluris- Orochi / Hydra

So, I've come up with a team based on Zulu folk heroes. I don't have any art yet, but I've done a lot of research, they follow the naming rules, they're got (I think) fairly unique designs and a story arc and stuff.

Thing is, I dunno whether to post them or not or to request/commission artwork of them? If Monty launches an OC contest, I don't want to risk not being able to enter them, or something?

Post it. It sounds really interest and I really want to read it. As for art, start with Mega Anime Avatar Creator. A lot of people on Deviant ART have been using it for their OC's recently and, if you do eventually request art, the artists have something to work with rather than starting from scratch.

Eh, hmm...

Anyone got a twitter account? Would anyone be able to ask Monty if, should they do an OC contest in the future, if previously shown/drawn OCs would be eligible?

So, i'm starting work on the third and final chapter of my fic. While i'm doing that, I have a preview for it:

“Blake!” Ruby cried out as they entered the Sarcophagus room, her eyes darting from coffin to coffin. “It’s Ruby and Yang! We’re here to break you free!”

“Sis, keep it down!” Yang said, shushing her sister. “We should get Blake and Weiss out without letting that mummy girl see us…”

“Oh, good point!” Ruby said. “Blake!” Ruby said in a loud whisper as she walked over to one of the coffins. “We’re here to get you fee-OH MY GOSHHHHHH!”

Yang ran over to the coffin… And jumped back a bit in shock when she saw a rotting skeletal figure laying in the open coffin.

“BLAKE! You’re DEAD!” Ruby cried out in grief, tears flowing from her eyes. “How did this happen?!”, she said, pulling the corpse out of the coffin. “HOOOOOWWWWW?! WHYYYYYYYYY?!”

Yang looked on, trying to compherehnd how Blake could have rotted to a skeleton so quickly, or why her clothes looked completely different… And then she heard a muffled sound accompanied by a rattling noise from the next unopened coffin. “Oh…” Yang remarked, realising the truth.

“Ummm… Sis?” Yang said awkwardly. “That’s… That’s not Blake…”

“I know she doesn’t look like Blake anymore, but that’s what happens when you’re dead…” Ruby cried out, squeaking the last word.

“No… I mean, that’s literally not Blake. I think it’s some other guy…”

“Say what?” Said Ruby.

“I think Blake’s in there… “ Yang pointed to the coffin right next to her, lightly shaking. Upon seeing it, Ruby’s eyes widened, blushing.

“Oooooooh… Heh heh… Silly me…” Ruby sheepishly said, scratching the back of her head… And then she looked at the corpse in her arms, and immediately dropped it in horror. “Ew, I touched a dead guy ew ew EW!” She cried out, brushing herself off as the body crashed to the ground with a clattering of loose bones. The sound made Ruby shudder, but she put it aside and rushed to the coffin. “Hang on Blake, we’re coming!”

So is there anything I should fix in this sample? Any advice you guys can give me?

Hm...I think I've seen it before, but it's good in the sense that it comes from a 'what if' scenario that led them to being there in the first place. Anyway, I like the idea of the story. I don't read enough inter-team dialogue that doesn't require another team's presence for it to work. Still, the child is adorably creepy. Not like I've seen enough of those with advent of Blood Rose and any Follow the Leader fics as well.

That aside...I've been plagued by an OC idea using the Pied Piper...thoughts?

Well, reading all this makes me wonder how my fanfic's been overlooked, or why. Sure, it's not as popular as Zodiac, which I adore, and it uses OCs as somewhat major characters, but primarily, it follows the main cast. I may as well share it now, even though I started it back in November last year. It gets better as it goes, since I've been studying creative writing in uni. It's my most-loved fanfic, which is great, blah, blah, blah.

Since I only just joined tvtropes (I've been a long-time reader, never had a reason to share or contribute), I can't link it. Shame. But I can name it - The Rose General. FF.net is your friend.

Hi! New guy here on TV Tropes, but not on the concept of writing fan fiction. :3

Sorry if I happen to be disrupting the flow of this thread, but I've an OC story of my own to share. It's called "The Children of ARES", complete with the standard four introductions and a first chapter on FF.Net. Since you all seem to know your stuff about RWBY fanfics, I was wondering if you had any thoughts, critique or advice to share about it. Oh, and please do leave a review if you're feeling at least a little generous to. :D

(Curse my inability to place external links. Grrr....)

[up]Greetings!

Posting excerps from your fic might help. When you make a post, look for 'Markup Help' and 'quoteblock'. Copy and paste the quoteblock section, then copy and paste your excerpt over "text". It's best if it doesn't come from Word, I find, as Tropes tends to mess up formats.

[up][up][up] If you mean the first result on a Google search, it's actually the song that inspired the name.

If you mean the first search on FF.net... well, I'll have to take a look on there. I should have specified: RWBY: The Rose General. But, judging by the recent readership increase since I posted the initial comment (not a drastic one, but enough of one for me to notice), I assume that people found it.

I was thinking about an AU where the cast live in a world of Grimm, rather than humans. Man showed up and disrupted the Grimm, using Dust to slaughter and enslave the Grimm, until the Grimm managed to turn the tide and decimate mankind. In this world, the Grimm have souls, and they see "humans" as the soulless monsters.

Total role reversal, with Humans being the enemy, and our cast being different types of Grimm. Since the world's 90 percent Grimm, there's no Beacon for the characters to attend. Vale doesn't exist, though certain breeds of Grimm co-inhabit that region. Though they exist in a tribal system (Taijutu colony, Ursa colony, etc), they all agree that Humans are the enemy and begin installing a special force of some kind to deal with them.

I think I got the idea from that Film/Daybreakers.

Problem is, I'm not the creative sort, and can't be arsed building it with the reference material as small as it currently is. Knowing so little about the Grimm, what they are, what they do, and what Ozpin has to do with them, whether they have a hive mind - it doesn't feel right to... write, this sort of game-changing AU. I did, however, want to include a Werewolf Grimm and call it the "Richard".

True, we don't know enough about the Grimm yet,but hold onto that idea. It sounds interesting...

You know, it's odd really; when Man emerged, the Grimm where already there and they immediately tried to drive us to extinction. It was there world before it was ours. And consider that it is likely that no other animal or creature aside from mankind can use aura and such, perhaps mankind is the true abomination? Perhaps it is the humans who took a world that is not theirs and have actively attempted genocide on a species who's only crime is seeing us an antithesis to life as they know it.

So...I started to write an original web novel...based on my RWBY OC fic.

No, I am not, nor ever will, use any characters or major setting/plot elements from RWBY, just the OC I made and their backstories.

It's just that...the more I work on the OC, the more...dark and rather far from RWBY that it is becoming, with some characters who would look far better in other types of works:

Schiefer - Taxi Driver, The Wire, The Town, etc

Cian - The Fighter

Fuchsia - Breaking Bad

Rufus - The Town

The original story I'm writing is leaning towards city noir/dark fantasy, something doesn't really go to well with RWBY, I think.

Here's hoping that there is nothing wrong with what I'm doing. -__-

Why would it be? Your characters, your project. You can't copyright 'characters named after colours' anyway...

Heck, Star Wars only came into existence because George Lucas couldn't get the rights to direct a Flash Gordon movie.
