Cool Names For Weapons?

Go To

I'll have to admit - I love thinking up cool and unique pieces of equipment. It's fun, though balancing them is hard...Especially when P Cs begin to use them in ways you can't begin to imagine. TV Tropes, I need your help:

Recently, I've been running a campaign using the Mutants & Masterminds 3rd Edition - The game largely revolves about Iron Man-style power armored heroes doing battle with each other...With a combination of magic and technology. Well, my players have recently plundered a vault of ancient equipment - And I'm having immense trouble thinking of good names for the stuff they've found!

Here's the things I'm really looking to get cool-sounding and appropriate names for...

(I'm trying to go more for a serious-sounding technological name; These are pieces of technology - Ancient ones, but they still run on pseudoscience, not magic.)

1.) An Eastern-style sword (Basically a straightened katana) with an elaborate scabbard: The scabbard has a complex firing mechanism - One that uses an explosive charge to launch the blade, adding speed to the wielder's swing for a devastating first attack. (Think Jetstream Sam's sword in Metal Gear: Rising, and you wouldn't be far wrong.)

The sword itself is a charged blade in an energy field - One that's nearly unbreakable, and sharp enough to shear through steel like shaving cream.

2.) A helmet that regulates the wearer's emotions; When donned, he can think and act with cold, mechanical precision, untroubled by fear or pain. When this is in use, the 'mouthpiece' of the helmet seals itself, leaving only the wearer's eyes exposed.

Tentative name: Alpha-Wave Inducer. Or, -something- regulator.

3.) This is one I'm having quite a bit of trouble describing: One of the heroes relies heavily on electrical attacks, and I want to have something that'd greatly enhance his powers - But I don't know what it should look like.

Tentative name: Ionic Amplifier

4.) A powerful bazooka-esque weapon, with the mouth shaped like a gargoyle's skull. It fires explosives that stick to a target, then can be detonated at will.

Tentative name: Hellion Launcher

(A problem - The defenders were already called 'Hellions'. Since the place's guardians will be showing up for a while longer - I don't want to make the name too obvious, but I want it to sound powerful.)

5.) An upgrade to a player's Attack Drones; With this upgrade, they fire powerful photonic lasers at designated targets. Unfortunately, my players are quite familiar with Gundam, so I can't just call them Bits or Funnels.

Tentative Name: Lucifers/Lightbringers.

Finally - The leader of the group is a gunslinger by the name of the 'Red Joker'...And he really wants a Super Mode. I'd love to continue the card metaphor - What would be a good name for something appropriate? (This Super Mode is a heavily bulked-up version of himself; Where he's normally fast, lightly armored and speedy, this is basically a walking tank.)

...And, alas, King Form and Jack Form have already been taken.

Alpha Wave inducers? Alpha waves are associated with Drowsiness, Sleep, and the cortex at rest... So unless your helmet puts the wearer to sleep, it's a bad idea.

Ah, really? Man, I'm glad you caught that.

How about...Cortex Regulator?

For the sword, Raigeki*

sounds alright, don't you think?

For the Super Mode, how about you still go with cards but maybe a different kind of card? Maybe World Form as in The World from tarot cards?

A general rule of thumb is that if it is ancient tech, try not to give it too science-y of a name. Unless the ancients they are pilfering from follow the same science we do, it would seem a bit odd.

Those really are quite good - But the thing is, I'm trying to keep a general 'technological feel' to things...Hence, a name like the 'Grind Blade' is more likely than, say, the 'Murasama'.

I like the Tarot suggestion, but I'll admit I didn't make tarot references before: I'm kind of stuck with the card-game metaphor. I'd like to keep using it, if possible.

Would any of the random generators on Seventh Sanctum or Mithril & Mages be of any use to you? When I'm stuck naming stuff for campaigns, they're where I head for.

Maybe go with a suit of cards then? Diamond Form sounds durable.

As for techy names... I don't really know a whole lot of science stuff. Latin is sciency right? Then how about Fulgensis? It's an amalgamation of the Latin for lightning and blade.

1)Death divider

2)Folly's bane or Wisdom of the proverbs

3)Sprite back (a sprite is a rare electrical phenomenon where electricity shoots upwards instead of down and usually much more powerful than lightning)

4)Light breaker(if the light bringer is the enemy of the church then what are you going to call those that defend its walls, alternatively Light Boiler because Gargoyles also protected against water erosion)

5)Abbadon's Swarm(Abbadon is the one who keeps evil greater than even the devil sealed away, though he will eventually let some of it out and Abbadon also means place of destruction, alternatively Shedim, Hebrew word for demon and references the fact you are deploying or "shedding" them or Michael's molt, since he is the mightiest angel and angels often have bird wings)

3) should probably resemble complicated electrical devices on the wrists and back, essentially superchargers. Call it the Charge Inducer; things named Inducer are always awesome. Scientific fact.

Thinking of a high-tech sounding name for a close combat weapon is going to be a struggle. Meanwhile, here's a go at the other ones:

2) Adrenaline Regulator - Does Exactly What It Says On The Tin.

3) Personal Capacitance System - basically a huge battery that fits over the electrokinetic's chest, or wherever his powers come from. Stores the charge he passively generates, then can be activated to release it with his attacks.

4) I was going to say Jericho System, but then I remembered Iron Man had already taken that one.

5) maybe Cherubim Swarm or Vigilance System - something that implies it will watch your back.

6) The Ace In The Hole - can't think of anything better for a card-master's super mode.

Nice! Really, really love the names so far - Keep 'em coming.

Oh, one last thing: I'm looking for a name for a massive, augmented Mobile Armor - Something like the Dendrobium Orchis from Gundam 0083...Basically a flying tank.

What would be a good name for the weapon system? For context - Thus far, the defenders of the place have been called 'Hellions', and I want it to sound 'angelic'. Like - The others are called Cherubim, Thrones, Powers...That kind of thing.

The GABR1EL System, or some variant thereof.

The armour could be, if experimental, Project Gabriel.

I over looked Red Joker. For his super mode I suggest Trick 54, for fifty two cards plus two jokers. Maybe Trick 53 for a super mode and trick fifty four for a bigger super mode. "trick" comes from spades, a game that sometimes uses Jokers. You could also call it Breaking Trump, again after a play in Spades.

Edit: for angelic defenders have you used the Malakim(Messengers), Mu'aqqibat(Followers), Darda'il(Journeyers), Erelim(The Valiant), Watchers(Eregoroi or Raqib), Hashmallim(Electric Ones), Hafazhah/Zabayniya(Guards), Ethnarch(s) (guardian(s) of nation(s)) Memetim(Destroyer or Death) or Principalities yet? Up to you to choose the Hewbrew/Aramic/Arabic or English names.

If you do not like any of the names for groups of angels you could maybe use names for documentation of angels. Paulina(s), Almadel(s), Lesser Keys?

Very nice.

One last thing; What's a good name for an artifact grenade dispenser? I was considering either a Kamen Rider Eternal-style set of bandoliers, or some kind of automatic grenade launcher - Via one's backpack.

Wait it is still going? Kelipot(s) for the Hebrew term for realm of evil? It was from a form a mysticism that used a lot of demonic imagery to describe human behavior?

Okay I'm not sure if this thread has finished it's original purpose but how about we use it for a general weapon name brainstorming thread? It'd be cool to just have a large pool of wicked ass names to draw from.

To get the ball rolling, have some lightning blade suggestions!

  • Fulgensis
  • Raigeki
  • Phosphera's Wrath
  • Atmos Blade
  • Seven-Branched Bolt

I had a character in one game name his magic rapier (I forget the full bonuses) the Stinging Rebuttal. Quite appropriate for a swashbuckler.

Better yet, call it the Charge Inductor and make all the electrical engineers in the audience cry.

"Reason"

"Last Argument"

"Discretion."

For a sword.

"Irony."

I'm also fond of one of the names for a sword in Wise Mans Fear

"Caesura" (A break in a line of poetry)

OK, so my Hand Cannon in Wolsung: Steam Pulp Fantasy is now equipped with a Magnetoetheric Coil. The coil manipulates Background Magic Field to disrupt what holds undead and demons together, stabilizes the bullet's flight path and sometimes causes the scrambled magic energy to arc out, hitting nearby targets.

I put another copy on our orc detective's elephant gun. The solution I copied it from, however, was pretty much a purely magical knockoff of Supernatural's Peacemaker. Our third party member, the elven writer, wields it after the previous owner was eaten by an extradimensional threat of unknown nature.

[up]I'm not sure how this if on-topic, unless you're asking for a name for your guns.

I'm actually dropping a name for a gun part. ;) Magnetoetheric Coil is my idea, Phlogiston Injector is as well.

Also, in a cyberpunk system I wouldn't mind an Oniyari Sniper Rifle.

I'd go for simple serial or model numbers like the a military naming system, and then give character to the weapons by giving them nicknames based on what they do.

For instance, the US Army has a weapon system called the XM 25 Counter-Defilade Target Engagement System. Boring...but the frontline troops who use it call it "the Punisher". The Australian Army used to use a weapon called the L1A1 SLR...which the troops named "the bitch gun".

This sounds like fun... lesse.

1) Tesla's Howl, Thunder's Echo, Chinvato Peretu (the sword-bridge after death in Zoroastrianism), Bakuhatsuteki Iaijutsu ("Explosive Quick-Draw Technique"), or Tengoku Bunkatsu Ken (Heaven-Splitting Sword) (apologies for any mangled Japanese, that's just Google Translator-work)

2) The Evil Eye, Kant's Retort, The Reasonator

3) Aetheric Engine, Teslapack, Inductor Coil Gauntlets, Futility Resistors

4) The Hellmouth, Stickynade Launcher (obvious, but eh...), Gargoyle's Roar, Impcannon

5) ... huh. Don't have much for this one. I kind of like Lightbringers, though.

6) Red Joker's super mode? Trump Mode, Jokers Wild, Sleeved Ace, Diamonds High, Royal Flush

7) Angelic Tank-armour? Eh, maybe 'Final Hosts'? Not sure. Just noticed the date on the last post by the OP , and my motivation kinda dipped >.O

8) May as well finish- for the Grenade Launcher, The Red Pill, Pez Popper, Deathvendor 5000..?
