Note: If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the mods to add the trope via this thread.
This is the thread to report tropes with problematic Real Life sections.
Common problems include:
- Conversation on the Main Page
- Flame Bait
- Squicky content
- Impossible in Real Life
Real Life sections on the wiki are kept as long as they don't become a problem. If you find an article with such problems, report it here. Please note that the purpose of this thread is to clean up and maintain real life sections, not raze them. Cutting should be treated as a last resort, so please only suggest cutting RL sections or a subset thereof you think the examples in question are completely unsalvageable.
If historical RL examples are not causing any problems, consider whether it would be better to propose a No Recent Examples, Please! (via this forum thread) for RL instead of NRLEP. If RL examples are causing problems only for certain subjects, consider whether a Limited Real Life Examples Only restriction would be preferable to NRLEP.
If you think a trope should be No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only, then this thread is the place to discuss it. However, please check Keep Real Life Examples first to see if it has already been brought up in the past. If not, state the reasons and add it to the crowner.
Before adding to the crowner:
- The trope should be proposed in the thread, along with reasons for why a crowner is necessary instead of a cleanup.
- There must be support from others in thread.
- Any objections should be addressed.
- Allow a minimum of 24 hours for discussion.
When adding to the crowner:
- Be sure to add the trope name, a link to where the discussion started, the reasons for crownering, whether the restriction being proposed is NRLEP or LRLEO (and in the latter case, which subject(s) the restriction would be for), and the date added.
- Announce in thread that you are adding the item.
- An ATT advert should be made as well (batch items together if more than one trope goes up in a day).
In order for a crowner to pass:
- Must have been up for a minimum of a week
- There must be a 2:1 ratio
- If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
- Once passed, tropes must be indexed on the appropriate NRLEP index
- Should the vote fail, the trope should be indexed on KRLE page
Sex Tropes, Rape and Sexual Harassment Tropes, and Morality Tropes are banned from having RL sections so tropes under those indexes don't need a crowner vote.
As per Real Life Troping, we never trope unscripted real life sports — so sports tropes where RL examples would only apply to those scenarios don't need a crowner vote.
Crowner entries that have already been called will have "(CLOSED)" appended to them — and are no longer open for discussion.
After bringing up a trope for discussion, please wait at least a day for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

Notes:
- This thread is not for general discussion regarding policies for Real Life sections or crowners. Please take those conversations to this Wiki Talk thread.
- Do not try to overturn previous No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only decisions without a convincing argument.
- As mentioned here, the consensus is that NRLEP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.
- The [[noreallife]] tag doesn't currently work. This is a deprecated tag that was introduced many years ago — originally, it would have displayed a NRLEP warning banner when you edited the page. However, there's been some staff conversation (Feb 2024) about what a new technical solution might look like, so we'd advise against deleting these from pages, at least until we have a decision as to whether it'll be fixed or replaced.

Crowner antiport is go.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanHmm. Thread discussed branching off an RL page for Landslide Election, but crowner voted to just chop it entirely. Going back to posting when it was an active item, I did say (but then forgot, because my memory can give black holes pointers on how to suck ) that I wouldn't be bothered by a separate RL page.

All your safe space are belong to TrumpPreacher's Kid added to crowner 41.
Preacher's Kid would go better in Gossip and stereotypes.
Disposable Woman has a Real Life Media folder mentioning a New York Times article about Charlie Sheen. It should be removed, shouldn't it?
(Annoyed grunt)Yeah. If anything, under a "Newspapers" folder I'd say. It's an opinion piece, not a news article.
That said, I'm not that keen on that trope in general not being NRLEP, as the description is pretty clear it's about a female being used for narrative purposes, and then tossed away once that purpose is fulfilled. There is no creator for RL, hence no narration purpose to serve.

All your safe space are belong to TrumpIt is a newspaper using the concept, not a real life example.
I understood that. What I meant was that I would support NRLEP along with moving that NYT article to a "Newspapers" (or whatever might be more appropriate) folder.

Seconded.
Moved the article on Disposable Woman to a Newspapers folder.
Also adding it to the crowner, as the trope description makes it clear it's about a narrative device.

Eating the Eye Candy worries me. Especially that example of how Yaoi Fangirls love to see Male Frontal Nudity with erect penises. And That's Terrible
I'm trying to figure out how many of those entries are legitimate examples. The Carbolic Smoke Ball and the reporter ones seem to qualify. The Hugh Jackman one was a prank, and not quite the trope. The others are focused on the actual fanservice, which isn't what the trope is about, since that makes them generic "examples" at best.

Regarding Eating the Eye Candy, I don't think it really needs to be NRLEP, but the entries for the Carbolic Smoke Ball and French reporters are the only ones that are actually the trope, and the rest can be cut as misuse.

On another note, Documentary of Lies and Twisting the Words were both added to the NRLEP list by Nakuyabi, without discussion here.
Documentary of Lies is currently in TRS with a crowner to determine its fate, the crowner currently leaning towards making it In Universe Examples Only (the other two options are in the negative numbers). However, nothing in the TRS thread says anything about cutting the RL folder out of hand before the crowner is called (Wilbyr is probably waiting for Monday, to give plenty of time for people to chime in like he has in previous TRS crowners).
Twisting the Words hasn't been discussed anywhere as far as I can tell. Not in the page's discussion, not on Ask The Tropers, and not anywhere on the forums.

All your safe space are belong to TrumpWait, I mean, I'm not opposed to making Disposable Woman NRLEP, but I don't even see any examples on the page.
CM Dates; CM Pending; CM DraftsIt came to this thread's attention because of a "Real Life Media" folder with the example now residing in the "Newspapers" folder, about an editorial regarding Charlie Sheen printed in the NY Times.

All your safe space are belong to TrumpHmm...well not a good example, but it does say references, so...[[shrug]]
CM Dates; CM Pending; CM DraftsI see the Real Life example of Everything Trying to Kill You as full of shameless exaggerations and rampant misuse. Particularly worrying is that the Australia folder is more than twice as large than all the subbulletted examples from Sierra games combined.
I dunno man, Austrailia is full of a lot deadly animals.
If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with? But at least none of those animals typed up that nattery mess.
But seriously, while Australia turns it Up To Eleven, a lot of places that are wilderness can be deadly if you (generic "you") aren't paying attention. I question whether there should be any RL examples on the page (and am not too keen on the way the description focuses on video games but has a rather sizable "non-VG" section, but that's another thread), particularly given that the two RL folders take up roughly a quarter of the entire example list.

All your safe space are belong to TrumpEven in Australia, there are only so many things that are likely to kill you, and most of them only if you're being Too Dumb to Live, like agitating them, getting too close, or trying to hug the crocodiles.
I think everything in the Real Life sections of Everything Trying to Kill You is shoehorns, and it's just a list of things that could be dangerous.
Check out my fanfiction! While I'm willing to try out cutting the misuse on Everything Is Trying to Kill You and see what happens, my personal preference is to make it NRLEP, especially with the trope as currently written with its VG focus. There's no creator to make things that are fatal to passers-by.
Gangsta Style has two RL sections, one a "general use" folder (which should probably be cut, at a glance mostly being in violation of the prohibition against "general" examples), and one for specific weapons. I don't see any value in keeping either one, really, especially not the "general use" folder.

All your safe space are belong to TrumpGetting back to something I posted about two days ago but got no comment (though Doctor Cooper commented them out on the NRLEP page), Documentary of Lies and Twisting the Words were both added to the NRLEP list by Nakuyabi on Jan 28, without discussion here.
Documentary of Lies is currently in TRS with a crowner to determine its fate, the crowner currently leaning towards making it In Universe Examples Only (the other two options are in the negative numbers). Twisting the Words hasn't been discussed anywhere as far as I can tell. Not in the page's discussion, not on Ask The Tropers, and not anywhere on the forums.
[edit] Should these two be formally made NRLEP? I'm not sure about either one, though I doubt there would be much of a problem with it, without looking more closely than I have time to do at present.

All your safe space are belong to TrumpI agree that Everything Is Trying to Kill You should be made NRLEP, for the additional reason that things don't work that way in Real Life. Even in regions with dangerous wildlife (such as Australia), the animals in question aren't there just to kill you and weren't put there to act as an obstacle.

Because it was decided to keep or restore the real life section.
