[up][up]I think you pretty much nailed it. I'd like a narrower definition of "others", though.

Also isn't this trope related to Silk Hiding Steel, Guile Hero and Manipulative Bastard?

I swear to God there used to be a really witty sig here.

Created Sandbox.Regal Princess.

[up] Yes, those are all good catches. Let's include them.

I'm not sure about Manipulative Bastard, though. Princesses are usually presented as heroic but not as manipulative.

The Politically Savvy Princess is a princess who handles her position in a unique way. Unlike the Princess Classic the Politically Savvy Princess takes an interest in and plays an active role in politics rather than simply stand back and let others use her as a bargaining chip. Naïve courtiers and commoners alike may see her as a figurehead since she rarely holds any official authority, but in truth, she works discreetly using guiles in order to achieve her ends. Skilled in diplomacy, she will usually attempt to solve conflicts via conversation or bargaining, rather than combat. That, however, does not mean she cannot be a Lady of War or a Badass Princess at the same time.

This trope subverts the Princess Classic, where the royal in question is characterized by her saintly virtues rather than her actions. Although historically this applied to both princes and princesses, in fiction, this trope is Always Female, as male royals are typically expected to act, while females...not so much.

A Politicaly Savvy Princess may also be a Rebellious Princess, though she will usually go about it more subtly. A subtrope of Royals Who Actually Do Something. See also Silk Hiding Steel.

Tried to tweak it a bit.

Just so I can claim I contributedtongue

[up][up] So does [up]that[up] go in the sandbox?

Yeah, you're probably right about Manipulative Bastard. Maybe The Chessmaster was the trope I was looking for, if only a Downplayed version.

[down]Yeah, it is The Chessmaster after all.

I think The Chessmaster is appropriate for those who are best at their jobs.

[up][up][up] I have incorporated some of that writeup. I liked it.

What does it mean that it doesn't apply to princes? Isn't that really saying that Regal Prince/Princess is simply a very common trope when applied to princes? ... it certainly doesn't apply to Prince Adam in He-Man.

Just a quick on real life information: I didn't sandbox all I had to say into the description, intentionally. I feel it's important when a trope intersects with the real world to have that background in mind, even if the trope is purely written with fiction in mind. This is important to avert Critical Research Failure or, worse, Unfortunate Implications. In this case, especially, though, there could very well be Truth in Television examples, not to mention biopics and dramatizations of actual royalty. It really sucks when you have to try to cram in extra description in the examples, instead of providing a basic useful statement up in the description that frames such examples.

Sandbox has been updated for clarification.

Do you think it's ready to run through YKTTW for examples?

I think so. Want to salvage what examples we can from the current page?

I think the only examples that work are The Royal Diaries, Star Wars and Tales Of The Abyss. Unfortunately, I can only write an example on the third.

YKTTW is up. I can write Tales Of The Abyss, but I'll need someone to suggest the rest there.

There seems to be some support for Politically Proactive Princess as the name. Do you think it's good?

Alliteration. tongue

I think that the Proactive bit gives the wrong idea about the trope and makes it longer while obscuring the meaning. Thus it violates both concise and clear, and alliteration is hardly witty so there's no gain there.

Hmmm, I don't see how proactive obscures the meaning, but I'd rather be safe than sorry, so I won't include it.

I used Raso's suggestion (Politically Savvy Princess) as the working title, so I'd be fine sticking with it.

Because being politically proactive is normally a euphemism for starting wars.

I like what I'm seeing here: a princess using her rank and personality to achieve results. Though I like the current title I thought of a different one when reading the description: "Queen To Be". A princess that thinks of herself not as a princess but someone that will be queen someday. She's practicing that role before she gets the title. I'd suggest "Wannabe Queen" That was listed in the Tales Of Abyss example but its kinda negative.

That's okay, but I prefer the current title because it's more descriptive. We already had some attempted shoehorning in YKTTW, and I'd rather be safe than sorry later. I can leave that as a redirect though.

Speaking of which...the YKTTW is kinda stale. Already bumped it and ask for help in the YKTTW thread. sad

Where does the original "princess who acts like a queen" concept of Regal Princess (as per the YKTTW archive history) stand with respect to this trope?
