Alright, so in TRS Badass Gay came up for discussion and it was agreed that there appears to big problem with the Badass X tropes in general, which needs to be sorted out until something can be ruled on for Badass Gay.
Here's a courtesy link: TRS page. And Badass page with its subtropes. You can also visit the sandbox page here.
Noted Problems include:
- Tropes are just listings of characters people thing are badass who happen to have a certain trait. (The Badass + Trait Problem)
- Badass X as a naming scheme is actually very vague and doesn't give a lot of insight into what the character trope actually is, assuming it is a trope.
- Badass X as a naming scheme proliferates the use of Badass + Trait 'tropes'.
Suggested things to do include:
- Make it a requirement that a badass character trope means a character is "badass because of a trait", or "badass in spite of a trait".
- Renaming away from the Badass X naming scheme as much as possible.
- Cut, redefine or re-purpose things that are just Badass + trait.
There are also a lot of tropes that seem to be valid character-types, but have the naming scheme 'Badass X', when there's more to the trope than that. There are also a lot of prop or event or whatever tropes that need to be gone through as well.

OH MY GOD; MY PARENTS ARE GARDENIIIIINNNNGGGGG!!!!!Big Badass Bird of Prey is now at 49.
update post: Big, Badass Bird of Prey is now at 36.
Here's another one: Badass Prisoner In A Badass Prison, all the relevant parts of which is presumably covered by Tailor-Made Prison and The Alcatraz already.
You've got roaming bands of armed, aggressive, tyrannical plumbers coming to your door, saying "Use our service, or else!"Both of those are bad from the name to the description.
Big Badass Bird of Prey is down to 3, one of which is the redirect to the new name. I don't know why the remaining two are there, so perhaps someone with more knowledge can figure it out.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.I checked it and it's now a zero. That means we can move on to a new trope. I suggest Big Badass Battle Sequence because it promises to be a simple fix.
Perhaps we could rename it to Epic Battle Sequence or Large Scale Battle.
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid. We already have The War Sequence.
If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with?^ they are different things.
The Big Epic Battle, Battle To End All Battles?
OH MY GOD; MY PARENTS ARE GARDENIIIIINNNNGGGGG!!!!!??????
OH MY GOD; MY PARENTS ARE GARDENIIIIINNNNGGGGG!!!!!Guys, I'd suggest that we should first try to settle on an exact definition of "Badass", before we proceed any further.
Some confusion about which topic we are talking about: Big Badass Battle Sequence or The War Sequence. Does the former need fixing? They are different tropes to me.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI'd really like to get Badass itself out of the way. After a big argument we more or less had a definition down and I'd like to work on that rather than chase down side projects.
I don't think that with the current software we can easily do a mass cleanup that would be required for this.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanThat may be so, but just rewriting the description would be helpful. It would stop further arguments about what Badass means. YKTTW also gets new Badass snowclones pretty often and the main page claiming Badass is something that it clearly isn't doesn't help.

Yes, it may at least help us know for sure what we're expecting from all the other Badass tropes.
Yeah I concur that a solid definition would help much of the discussions for all the tropes involved.
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid. You know, while I prefer to do a Mary Sue-style comprehensive writeup of how the concept is used, having a nutshell "the character is good at fighting" definition at least for the subtropes is the best way to work with it - this is how I see this term being used in wicks, anyway.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI thought we had agreed that "character is good at fighting" glosses over cases like Badass Pacifist where the Badass in question does not even fight, and yet still wins fight in an unexpectedly awesome way through not fighting.
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.Summarizing the previous discussions, I propose the following definition of "Badass":
Thoughts?
It seems to me that Badass Pacifist is just not a Badass subtrope at all.

I have my doubts that the comparison is important, and it's not how the term is used. "Story relevant" is better - it covers tropability immediately and leaves open room for characters which are "average" for their setting but still affect the story.
